1. Focus Group
For this task, I asked 6 males aged 16-30 with an interest within the genre of rock, what they would
like to be in a rock/indie magazine. I then summarized the results to see what I could put in the
magazine that would appeal to my target audience.
The 6 males I asked
Summary of results
Section 1- Front Cover
1. What image/images would you like to be on there?
All 6 of the males replied and said they would like images of bands or artists on the
front cover and maybe another image to show what is inside on the double page
spread – A cover line.
2. What coverlines would interest you?
The six males had varied ideas on this like coverlines that draw attention of the
reader and are interesting. Others suggested that I should include coverlines that
directly relate to the double page spread which will be included inside my
magazine.
3. What colours would be appropriate?
All males said that the colours should match those that are stereotypically
associated with the genre of rock. The colours suggested were, red, black, white
and grey.
Section 2 – Contents Page
4. What images and how many?
Two of the males said that there should be four images all of them artists on their
own or band members on their own. I think this is a good idea because it would
allow me to show the readers the main article in the magazine. The other four
suggested ideas about a group band picture together with a special effect.
5. What content would you want inside the magazine?
Five of the six males suggested in this question to include a special interview with a
band or artist on the double page spread as it would be more interesting than a
review on instruments or a concert which is what the other male mentioned.
6. What type of language would you expect? (for example, informal/formal)
The six males were in agreement on this question and they suggested a mixture of
formal and informal as informal language is often stereotyped with the hardness
involved in the genre of rock. They said most magazines they have read have used
terms like “’Frikin’ awesome” and said it would provide humour to the reader and
make the magazine more appealing to my target audience.
2. Section 3 – Double page spread
7. What choice of images would you like in the magazine?
All males were once again in agreement for this question as they all suggested a
wide shot of a band used in the interview article. This would directly relate to the
text. They also suggested that images of guitars could be thrown into the middle of
the text and to allow the text to wrap around it.
8. What would you like the article to be about? (for example, interview etc)
Five males again spoke about the interview with a band or artist as it would
provide an interesting story about their life and what they plan to do in the next
year or so. It would provide an article that would interest the majority of the target
audience.
9. Would you like a more image or more text based article?
All six males again agreed on this one and said it should be broken down to equal
amounts so the reader doesn’t get bored reading solid text. If the double page
spread is split equally, it would also look more appealing for the reader to read.
10. How would you like the language to be?
The six males said again that the language should be a mixture of formal/informal
as this is stereotypically associated with rock.
