1. Task 10: Formal Proposal
Title of magazine
The name of my magazine will be Overtone.This is because when I was researching the history of
rock music, I found out that an overtone is anyfrequencythat is higher than the normalfrequency of
a sound. It also reminds me of how Kerrang!came up with its name.
Choice of genre
I have chosen rock music as my genre because it is my favourite music genre. Also, I have been
influenced by rock in many ways and it influences the way I dress and my personality. This will help
me because I will know what to include in my magazine.
My target audience
The stereotypical audience for rock would people of both genders but mostly females and would
wear a lot of black. I am aiming for an audience of both genders aged between 16-19. I have decided
that I will use both males and females on the front cover and use them as a band for my magazine.
This is so people of both genders are more likely to buy my magazine.
Initial ideas for my front cover
For my front cover, I am planning on using a long shot of four people who will all be dressed in black.
This is to show that rock music has fans that are male and female and that the number of fans of
each gender is equal. For the masthead, I would want the font to be bold and to look a bit futuristic,
and the colour would be silver. Also, for my cover lines, I would have them related to the band on
the front cover and other artists.
Initial ideas for my contents page
For my contents page, I will have the masthead at the top and will be the same size as the masthead
on the front cover; it will also be of a similar but different font to the front so that it isn’t all the
same. The name of the magazine, Overtone, will be above the Cand in a smaller font.Also, I would
want the colour of it to be white so that it stands out as the background at the top will be dark
coloured. I will have all the features along the left side of the page and include a dominant image on
the right. Under this dominant image, will beband/artist names and there will be a page number
next to it so my audience know the names of all the bands that are included. There will also be three
smaller images of what else is included within the magazine.
Initial ideas for my article
For my article, I will be having an interview with the band that is included on the front cover but I
shall be using different images so that it looks more interesting; the band will be placed in a different
area, different types of shots will be used etc. The images will include shots of all four members (two
male, two female) so that it appeals to both genders. My article will include a lot of text; it will
consist of half of a page being filled in with the main image which will be of the singer in the band as
he will be answering a lot of the questions and is the frontman of the band. The second page will
have a mixture of images and text. There will be a masthead at the top that will explain what the
article is about, two images under it that will be of the band and then there will be an article under

2. those images which will be as long as half of a page. Under the interview, I will insert two more
images of the band.
Initial ideas for photographs
I have decided that the front cover will have a long shot of my band all pulling faces similar to the
ones I have seen other, real life artists do on music magazines (examples of bands that do this
areKiss, The Blackout and Black Veil Brides). I feel that having a shot of them doing this will make
them look like they are people who like to have fun and know how to enjoy themselves. For the
contents page, I will use a medium-shot of the band but this time looking for more serious. However,
I have also chosen to have four smaller images at the bottom and they will be either close-ups or
medium-close-ups of the different features in the magazine. For the article, the dominant image will
be a close-up of the singer singing into a microphone. I will want the singer to have their eyes closed
tight and their mouth wide open because it will show how much energy and passion they are putting
into their music and this will let the reader know how strong their music is. On the second page,
there will be a masthead at the top and then two images under that. They will be medium-long shots
of the band and will be of the band practising songs in their studio. One shot will be of the drummer,
the other will be of a guitarist and bassist; these images will show how hard working the band is how
much they care about their music. As the front cover image will be of the band trying to make the
reader laugh and show they like to have fun, these images for the article show that there is a limit
and will take their music seriously.Under the interview with the band, there will be two more
images. These images will be of the band performing live, they will be either medium-long shots or
medium shots. These will show what the band is like during their concerts so that the reader can pay
to see them.
I will use a dark blue background that will fade into black for the front cover as I think this would
look good with the image of the band and shows how dark their music is. The contents page will
have a white background with the text in black but the names of each feature will be in red so that it
stands out more. The background will be maroon and black with white text.
