Preposition
•A preposition is a short word used to link nouns, pronouns, or phrases to other
words within a sentence.
•They are normally placed directly before the noun
Types of Prepositions
•Preposition of Time
•Preposition of Place (Used to show the position or location of something in
context to other)
•All other

On In
At To
Into Behind
In front of Under
Below Over
Above Across
Between By, Next to, Beside, Near
On
Usage: Something is in a position that is physically touching, covering or attached
to surface
Common Usages:
1. Something attached
Examples:
• The ball is on the box.
• The clock on the wall is not working.
• The book is on the desk
On
2. With words left / right
Example:
•The book is on the left side of keypad
3. With public transports:
Example:
•I love traveling on the bus / train / plane
On
4. For media or Digital Space
Example:
•My interview was broadcast on TV/ Radio/ the internet / a website
5. Misc
With word floor
Ex: On the ground floor / on the dance floor
Next to or along the side of (river)
Ex: Cambridge is on the River Cam
Above
Usage: Higher than mentioned place or area (something vertically above you, but
not touching the surface)
Example:
•The ball is above the box
•Our Plane was flying above the clouds.
•There is a painting above the sofa.
Behind
Usage: to indicate a thing which is at back of something
Example:
•The ball is behind the box.
•I hung my coat behind the door.
•She was running behind me.
Across
Usage: from one side to the other with clear limits or end points
Example:
•The ball is moving across the bridge.
•She jogged across the field/ jogging track / road.
•He traveled across the United States.
Between
Usage: In middle of two stated points
Example:
•The ball is placed between two boxes.
•There is a sea between England and France.
•She lives halfway between main city center and her office.
Next to / Beside
Usage: something on the side of stated thing
Example:
•The ball is placed beside / next to the box.
•She was walking beside / next to me.
•Jane is sitting next to / beside Marc.
Near / Close To
Usage: something on the side of stated thing, but there is a little distance between
two stated things / people
Example:
•There is a tree near / close to our house.
•The reception is near / close to main door.
•The office is near / close to famous garden.
To
Usage: with verb which shows a movement towards a place
Example Verb of movment: run, go, jog, slip, walk, jump, crawl
Example:
•We are going to India this winter
• I am going to office / to cinema / to shopping center
* When you’re in motion
In front of
Usage: in the forefront of the stated place.
Example:
•The ball is in front of the box.
•The reception is in front of cafeteria.
• I am standing in front of the statue.
In
Usage: Something is inside
Common Usages:
1. Enclosed Space (adjunto espacio)
Example: I am working in my cabin
2. In large location
Example: I like walking in the garden / street / town
In
3. Abstract location (Abstracto espacio)
Example:
• My face is looking good in the photograph / in the book / in this article
Into
Usage: show verb of movement moving towards an enclosed space
Example Verb of movment: run, go, jog, slip, walk, jump, crawl
Example:
• The ball will go into that box.
• I am working in my cabin.
• All sales team members go into the garden area.
• Miley ran into the house .
Into
Exception: don’t use ‘into’ with word ‘enter’ for a physical space
Example:
• Boss entered the cabin.
• She entered the living room.
However, use ‘into’ with word ‘enter’ for abstract space
Example:
• We entered into the contract.
• He entered details into the system.
At
Usage: Exact or Precise place
Common Usages:
1. Precise and small location
Example: I will be waiting for you at the entrance / at the multiplex / at this address / at home.
2. At Event
Example: I will come with you at the party/ at Jane’s wedding / at meeting / at concert.
Exceptions for In and At
Sometimes you will see same noun used both, ‘in’ and ‘at’
For right usage of these 2 prepositions, keep below points in mind:
When you refer to a place because of what happens there (activity + precise location), you
should use ‘at’
•Today I am at work / at office / at school
When you refer to a place as a pure location (something inside that location), use ‘In’
•There was a party in the office / the school
Exceptions for In and At
If you visit hospital as a patient or jail / prison as an inmate (preso), use ‘in’
Example:
•I am in the hospital / She was in the jail
If you visit hospital or jail / prison as a visitor, use ‘at’
Example:
•I was at the hospital / She was at the jail

  • 2. Preposition •A preposition is a short word used to link nouns, pronouns, or phrases to other words within a sentence. •They are normally placed directly before the noun
  • 3. Types of Prepositions •Preposition of Time •Preposition of Place (Used to show the position or location of something in context to other) •All other
  • 4. Today We will learn, Preposition of Place On In At To Into Behind In front of Under Below Over Above Across Between By, Next to, Beside, Near

  • 6. On Usage: Something is in a position that is physically touching, covering or attached to surface Common Usages: 1. Something attached Examples: • The ball is on the box. • The clock on the wall is not working. • The book is on the desk
  • 7. On 2. With words left / right Example: •The book is on the left side of keypad 3. With public transports: Example: •I love traveling on the bus / train / plane
  • 8. On 4. For media or Digital Space Example: •My interview was broadcast on TV/ Radio/ the internet / a website 5. Misc With word floor Ex: On the ground floor / on the dance floor Next to or along the side of (river) Ex: Cambridge is on the River Cam
  • 9. Above Usage: Higher than mentioned place or area (something vertically above you, but not touching the surface) Example: •The ball is above the box •Our Plane was flying above the clouds. •There is a painting above the sofa.
  • 10. Behind Usage: to indicate a thing which is at back of something Example: •The ball is behind the box. •I hung my coat behind the door. •She was running behind me.
  • 11. Across Usage: from one side to the other with clear limits or end points Example: •The ball is moving across the bridge. •She jogged across the field/ jogging track / road. •He traveled across the United States.
  • 12. Between Usage: In middle of two stated points Example: •The ball is placed between two boxes. •There is a sea between England and France. •She lives halfway between main city center and her office.
  • 13. Next to / Beside Usage: something on the side of stated thing Example: •The ball is placed beside / next to the box. •She was walking beside / next to me. •Jane is sitting next to / beside Marc.
  • 14. Near / Close To Usage: something on the side of stated thing, but there is a little distance between two stated things / people Example: •There is a tree near / close to our house. •The reception is near / close to main door. •The office is near / close to famous garden.
  • 15. To Usage: with verb which shows a movement towards a place Example Verb of movment: run, go, jog, slip, walk, jump, crawl Example: •We are going to India this winter • I am going to office / to cinema / to shopping center * When you’re in motion
  • 16. In front of Usage: in the forefront of the stated place. Example: •The ball is in front of the box. •The reception is in front of cafeteria. • I am standing in front of the statue.
  • 17. In Usage: Something is inside Common Usages: 1. Enclosed Space (adjunto espacio) Example: I am working in my cabin 2. In large location Example: I like walking in the garden / street / town
  • 18. In 3. Abstract location (Abstracto espacio) Example: • My face is looking good in the photograph / in the book / in this article
  • 19. Into Usage: show verb of movement moving towards an enclosed space Example Verb of movment: run, go, jog, slip, walk, jump, crawl Example: • The ball will go into that box. • I am working in my cabin. • All sales team members go into the garden area. • Miley ran into the house .
  • 20. Into Exception: don’t use ‘into’ with word ‘enter’ for a physical space Example: • Boss entered the cabin. • She entered the living room. However, use ‘into’ with word ‘enter’ for abstract space Example: • We entered into the contract. • He entered details into the system.
  • 21. At Usage: Exact or Precise place Common Usages: 1. Precise and small location Example: I will be waiting for you at the entrance / at the multiplex / at this address / at home. 2. At Event Example: I will come with you at the party/ at Jane’s wedding / at meeting / at concert.
  • 22. Exceptions for In and At Sometimes you will see same noun used both, ‘in’ and ‘at’ For right usage of these 2 prepositions, keep below points in mind: When you refer to a place because of what happens there (activity + precise location), you should use ‘at’ •Today I am at work / at office / at school When you refer to a place as a pure location (something inside that location), use ‘In’ •There was a party in the office / the school
  • 23. Exceptions for In and At If you visit hospital as a patient or jail / prison as an inmate (preso), use ‘in’ Example: •I am in the hospital / She was in the jail If you visit hospital or jail / prison as a visitor, use ‘at’ Example: •I was at the hospital / She was at the jail
  • 24. Revision Time Preposition Usage On Something attached | With words left / right | With public transports | For media or Digital Space | with word floor | Next to or along the side of (river) Above Higher than mentioned place or area Behind at back of something Across from 1 side to other Between In middle of two things Next to / Beside On the side of something Near / Close to On the side of something at some distance To with a moving verb towards a place In front of in forefront of something In Inside an enclosed space | large area | abstract location Into verb in motion moving towards an enclosed space At Precise place | event
