Presented by Pr. Asaph in our office gathering. The meaning of Mercy and how it can be improved. The reward of being merciful are dealt in the teaching. I am sharing it for the wider christian community

2. Beatitudes
Blessed State (or) Happiness (or) Divine Joy
Beatus (Latin) means “Blessed” + Attitudes
The Beatitudes are the Blessed state of
Kingdom Citizens. By doing this they prove
that they belong to a different (Heavenly)
Kingdom.
Eight Beatitudes given by Jesus in the
introduction of the “Sermon on the
Mount” (Matthew 5:3-10)

3. Types of Beatitudes
Hunger for Righteousness (v.6)
Meekness (v.5)
Pure in Heart (v.8)
Peacemakers (v.9)
Mourn (v.4)
Poor in Spirit (v.3)
Merciful (v.7)

4. Beatitudes’ Map
Ascending – Those who are longing to see God
Poor in Spirit (1) – Mourn (2) – Meekness (3)
Time with God makes them “Hunger and Thirst for
Righteousness” (4)
Descending – The One who see and spend with God
becomes... Merciful (5) – Pure in Heart (6) –
Peacemakers (7)
Go out and face any Persecution for Righteous sake (8)

5. What is Mercy & Grace?
Mercy (இரக்கம்) - eleoV

Dictionary: Pity, Compassion & Charity
Biblical: Love Unconditional, Love in Action.
God’s Mercy: “Withholding something we
deserve” – Have mercy on me Lord! (Ps 86:1)
God’s Grace: “Doing something to someone
who don’t deserve”

6. Mercy in Bible
180 times the word MERCY found in the OT –
KJV translates it as Mercy (96); Kindness (38)
and Loving Kindness (46)
Mercy is God’s Unconditional Love – Based
on His loving nature
Conditional Love is based on Performance &
Priority – Which leads to insecurity (may not
be performing everyday)

7. The Parable of Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37)
25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked,
“what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How
do you read it?” 27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with
all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your
neighbour as yourself.’” 28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and
you will live.” 29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my
neighbour?”
30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he
was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away,
leaving him half dead. 31 A Priest happened to be going down the same road, and
when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he
came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he
travelled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He
went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man
on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took
out two denary and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I
return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ 36 “Which of these
three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told
him, “Go and do likewise.”

8. நல்ல சமாரியன் உவபம (லூக்கா 10:25-37)
25 அப்ப ொழுது நியாயசாஸ்திரி ஒருவன் எழுந்திருந்து, அவரைச் சசாதிக்கும்படி: ப ொதகபை, நித்திய ஜீவரைச்
சுதந்தரித்துக்பகொள்ளும் டிக்கு நொன் என்ை பெய்யபவண்டும் என்று பகட்டொன். 26 அதற்கு அவர்:
நியொயப்பிைமொணத்தில் என்ை எழுதியிருக்கிறது? நீ வொசித்திருக்கிறது என்ை என்றொர். 27 அவன்
பிைதியுத்தைமொக: உன் பதவைொகிய கர்த்தரிடத்தில் உன் முழு இருதயத்பதொடும் உன் முழு ஆத்துமொபவொடும் உன்
முழுப் லத்பதொடும் உன் முழுச்சிந்ரதபயொடும் அன்புகூர்ந்து, உன்னிடத்தில் அன்புகூருவதுசபாலப்
பிறனிடத்திலும் அன்புகூருவாயாக என்று எழுதியிருக்கிறது என்றொன். 28 அவர் அவரை பநொக்கி: நிதொைமொய்
உத்தைவு பெொன்ைொய்; அப் டிபய பெய், அப்ப ொழுது பிரைப் ொய் என்றொர். 29 அவன் தன்ரை நீதிமொன் என்று
கொண்பிக்க மைதொய் இபயசுரவ பநொக்கி: எனக்குப் பிறன் யார் என்று பகட்டொன்.
30 இபயசு பிைதியுத்தைமொக: ஒரு மனுஷன் எருசசலமிலிருந்து எரிசகாவுக்குப் ப ொரகயில் கள்ளர் ரகயில்
அகப் ட்டொன்; அவர்கள் அவன் வஸ்திைங்கரள உரிந்துபகொண்டு, அவரைக் கொயப் டுத்தி, குற்றுயிைொக
விட்டுப் ப ொைொர்கள். 31 அப்ப ொழுது தற்பெயலொய் ஒரு ஆசாரியன் அந்த வழிபய வந்து, அவரைக் கண்டு,
க்கமொய் விலகிப்ப ொைொன். 32 அந்தப் டிபய ஒரு சலவியனும் அந்த இடத்துக்கு வந்து, அவரைக் கண்டு,
க்கமொய் விலகிப்ப ொைொன். 33 பின்பு சமாரியன் ஒருவன் பிையொணமொய் வருரகயில், அவரைக் கண்டு,
மனதுருகி, 34 கிட்ட வந்து, அவனுரடய கொயங்களில் எண்பணயும் திைொட்ெைெமும் வொர்த்து, கொயங்கரளக்
கட்டி, அவரைத் தன் சுயவொகைத்தின்பமல் ஏற்றி, ெத்திைத்துக்குக் பகொண்டுப ொய், அவரைப் ைொமரித்தொன்.
35 மறுநொளிபல தொன் புறப் டும்ப ொது இைண்டு ணத்ரத எடுத்து, ெத்திைத்தொன் ரகயில் பகொடுத்து: நீ இவரை
விெொரித்துக்பகொள், அதிகமொய் ஏதொகிலும் இவனுக்கொகச் பெலவழித்தொல், நொன் திரும்பிவரும்ப ொது அரத
உைக்குத் தருபவன் என்றொன். 36 இப் டியிருக்க, கள்ளர்ரகயில் அகப் ட்டவனுக்கு இந்த மூன்றுப ரில் எவன்
பிறைொயிருந்தொன்? உைக்கு எப் டித் பதொன்றுகிறது என்றொர். 37 அதற்கு அவன்: அவனுக்கு
இரக்கஞ்சசய்தவசன என்றொன். அப்ப ொழுது இபயசு அவரை பநொக்கி: நீயும் ப ொய் அந்தப் டிபய பெய்
என்றொர்.

9. Things to Notice
1. The Expert in (Mosaic) Law wanted to Test Jesus
[The Old Testament Speak about being merciful
and Kind to the neighbours] Lev 19:9-18
2. Jerusalem to Jericho (v.30) – Jericho was a
cursed town – Josh. 6:26. It was located below sea
level (See Map), Very dangerous road to travel, it is
steep down. The person attacked was a Jew.
3. A Samaritan Stranger helped the Jew because
he was merciful.

Dead Sea is the lowest point
on the planet - currently
420m (1,380 ft) below sea
level.
Jericho is 258 Meters below
the sea level (846 ft)
Jerusalem is 800 Meters above
the sea level (2600 ft)
Jerusalem to Jericho 25 Kms.

11. Three People Pass by
v. 32 A Priest – (Lev 21:11; 19) – He should not
touch the dead body or injured person, if so he will
become unclean. (An agent of Blessing - Failed)
v. 33 A Levite – Somebody who help to do things in
the temple, same above rule is applied. If he
touches, he becomes unclean. (His service to God
did not extend to the People - Failed)
v. 34 A Samaritan – Counted by a Jew as unclean
person but was merciful towards a stranger. (His
unconditional love is displayed in action).

இரக்கமுள்ளவராக இருப்பதால் என்ன நன்பம)?

13. What is Mercy?
1. Mercy is Love in Action (இரக்கம் என்பது அன்பின் சசயல்
வடிவம்) – “Jesus looks at her and had mercy
(compassion / மனதுருக்கம்) on her” (Luke 7:13)
2. Mercy is an Attitude (இரக்கம் ஒரு குணாதிசயம்) –
Something that can’t be turned on/off at my will! (The
attitude of Christ – Seeing things through the eyes of
Christ) – Character can be changed as per our will.
3. Mercy is Unconditional Love (இரக்கம் என்பது
கட்டுப்பாடற்ற அன்பு) – Nothing expected in return from
the recipients!
4. Mercy is NOT an Emotion (இரக்கம் ஒரு உணர்ச்சி அல்ல) –
Have pity on someone (Emotion without Motion)!

14. How Can I be More Merciful?

1. Not Being Judgemental about Others’

3. See and Feel things through the Eyes of God.
4. Remember your own need of Mercy.
5. Get Rid of Anger, Bitterness and Resentment
(Which can damage the person more than the
recipient)

17. What Can I Expect for
being Merciful
1. Peace Within Us (Bitterness and Un-
forgiveness are like wounds that can be
healed through being Merciful)
2. Mercy From Others (Mercy and goodwill will
come back to the person who initiates)*
3. Mercy From God (Mat 5:7; 6:14-15; Ps.
18:25-26) – ... They shall obtain Mercy (from
God) Mat. 5:7

18. Final Thoughts
1. Being Merciful towards others bring
Mercy from God (Mat. 5:7)
2. Unconditional Love towards a Stranger
will by any means come back to you (Mat
10:42) – Story of Anderson!
3. Every act of Kindness and Mercy will give
divine satisfaction and Reward (Mat
25:37-40)
