Introduction
Concept Art and Character design (1 hour)
3. Concept Art
Concept art is a form of visual art used to convey an idea for use in films, video
games, animation, comic books, television shows, or other media before it is put into the final
product.
Concept art usually refers to world-building artwork used to inspire the development of media
products
4. Themes and styles
Concept art has always had to cover many subjects, being the primary medium in film poster design since the early days
of Hollywood, but the two most widely covered areas are science fiction and fantasy Since the recent rise of its use in video
game production, concept art has expanded to cover genres from fantasy to realistic depending on the final product.
Concept art ranges from stylized to photorealistic depending on the needs of the project. Artists working on a project often
produce a large turnover in the early 'blue sky' stage of production.[5] This provides a broad range of interpretations, most
being in the form of sketches, speed paints, and 3D overpaints. Later pieces, such as matte paintings, are produced as
realistically as required. Concept artists will often have to adapt to the style of the studio they are hired for. The ability to
produce multiple styles is valued in a concept artist
5. TYPES OF CONCEPT ART
Think about your favorite fantasy video game. With features like extraordinary real-world settings, unique creatures, and futuristic vehicles, have you
ever wondered who designed these elements? Environment artists cover the overall creative vision of a game to make CGI and 3D animation a
possibility.
Character Design
Character design is the most famous avenue of digital concept art. Artists develop various creatures, monsters, and realistic characters based on
backstories, personality traits, and player requirements. Animation allows these designs to depict real-life movements and imitate action to make
gameplay simulation as accurate as possible.
Environment concept artists must possess the ability to design and coordinate the clothes, characteristics, colors, movement, and action of the character.
By understanding the anatomy of humans and animals, designers can use their unique perspectives to depict their characters.
Some high-level concept art projects combine 3D and 3D elements with a large team of dedicated artists working together. Sometimes, illustrators may
focus on innovative techniques rather than a traditional portrayal of their characters.
6. Environment Design
The environment of a game includes characters, props, and other functional aspects that come together to emulate a
cohesive experience. Because of its scale and lack of restrictions, environment concept art is regarded as one of the most
challenging types of design. A single game may contain hundreds of landscapes ranging from outdoor nature to indoor
urban structures.
Environment artists are usually well versed in architecture, nature, and geology. With professional depth perception skills,
these digital designers focus on creating incredibly detailed and vibrant landscapes to play in. Everything within the
environment must be in rhythm with each other to fit in.
Since games are usually based on fantasy, concept artists don't have much real-world inspiration to draw upon. Instead,
their imagination is fueled to invent a whole new world. Then, they add props and characters to populate their environment
and bring it to life.
