2. The world of communication
technology is constantly evolving,
adapting, and innovating. Ten years
from now, in the year 2023, many
technologies we rely on today will
be different, and some will have
become a thing of the past. Digital
television, radio and news
broadcasting, cinema technologies,
mobile commerce and cell phones,
and social media are a few of the
technologies that we will discuss in
this presentation.
3. We have seen the world of digital
television evolve so much just in the
last few decades. Just over 100 years
ago the very first television was
created, and now we have
technologies such as Apple TV, that
allow us to watch movies and tv
shows, listen to music and much
more at the touch of a button.
An article from
science.howstuffworks.com reminds
us that “digital television brought
higher resolution, was less prone to
interference, and used power more
efficiently.”
Improvements in resolution and
efficiency as well as new additions in
features continue to change the
television as we know it. In the year
2023, televisions could be operated
solely by voice commands and, like
some cell phones already do, they
could scroll through channels and by
following the movements of viewers’
eyes.
4. The success of television is a great
example of the way the Critical Mass
Theory works.
In the Critical Mass Theory, when
there reaches a sufficient number of
users of an innovation, the rate of
adoption becomes self-sustaining
and creates further growth.
Savepune.tripod.com stated that
“The critical mass theory explains
why we need to be proactive and
make the change happen quicker.”
Producers saw that while
conventional television broadcasting
was fine, the invention of digital
television would allow for better
quality viewing. This improvement
would then increase the number of
users, and eventually the television
sustained itself, as most Americans
today have a working television in
their home.
5. As the image on the bottom right
corner displays, at one point, the
quickest way to get news out to
the public was through the radio.
Today, there are XM and Internet
radio stations that have almost
made conventional radio use
obsolete.
In the year 2023, it is likely that the
radio, in its traditional form, will be
something that will only exist as an
old story to tell our children about.
The ability to stream any music or
talk show that consumers desire is
what will push the conventional
radio out and make XM and
Internet radio the norm.
6. Improvements in cinema technologies is
absolutely unbelievable, going from black-
and-white in 1878 to 3-dimensional in
our world today.
Many people believe that IMAX films will
dominate the future of film, which could
very well be true.
An article from
thecreatorsproject.vice.com spoke of new
technologies coming in late 2013,
explaining that there would be better and
brighter IMAX movies, thanks to lasers. “In
addition to making raves and popping
popcorn more awesome, lasers are also
able to produce deeper black colors,
which means better color and image
quality all around—solidifying the
commonly-held belief that IMAX is the
future of movies.”
Another big aspect of film that is
continuing to change and improve is
movie theaters. In the year 2023, it is very
likely that theaters could look something
like the luxurious set pictured on the
bottom right of the screen.
7. The mobile world is growing rapidly, probably
more-so than any other communication
technology.
Both charts below show an increase in the
purchase and use of mobile devices in the
United States, compared to previous years.
With capabilities of mobile devices such as
cell phones and tablets continuing to
increase, more and more people are relying
on these technologies in their every day
lives.
In the year 2023, consumers will rely on their
mobile devices even more, whether it be for
work related or personal use. Producers of
mobile devices will continue to innovate to
meet the needs of consumers, and cell
phones will have features that no one ever
knew they needed until then.
8. Discussing the increased usage and
dependency of consumers on
mobile devices leads me to the
Media Systems Dependency
Theory, or simply “Media
Dependence.”
The Media Systems Dependency
Theory states that the more a
person depends on media to meet
needs, the more important media
will be in a person's life, and
therefore the more effects media
will have on a person.
This theory has proven to be true
in society today, as media and
technology continues to become a
larger part of the every day life of
Americans. The more consumers
use their mobile devices, the most
dependent they become, as the
Media Systems Dependency
Theory states.
9. Social media has grown to play a
larger role in our society today than
many people think, and it happened
so quickly. One of the first and most
successful social networks, Facebook,
was just created in 2005 and already
has become global.
As the illustration in the top right
suggests, there are so many social
networks that continue to join the
cyber world and influence users.
In the year 2023, the world will be
more connected than ever before
through new social media networks.
Alternatively, some networks,
perhaps even Facebook, will become
dated, much like MySpace has today.
The new technologies in the world of
social media will allow people to
connect and share information all
over the world, and will bridge the
generation gap as the younger
generation of today has grown up
using and relying on the Internet and
social media.
10. In discussing the evolution of the
influence of social media, it seems
that Moore’s Innovation Adoption
Rate plays a role in this media
technology quite a bit.
Moore's Innovation Adoption Rate
explain that innovations go
through a gradual change of being
accepted by early adapters, early
majority, late majority, and then
lastly the laggards.
Those in the older generation of
today often do not want to take
the time to learn how to use social
medias such as Facebook, but have
begun to accept it as part of their
world and involvement has shown
to have improved among older
users.
