These derivatives are used most commonly by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to establish a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Internet service connection with customers.
Devices cannot use PPP to transmit data over a network until the LCP packet determines the acceptability of the link, but LCP packets are embedded into PPP packets and therefore a basic PPP connection has to be established before LCP can reconfigure it.
LCP disables an interface if it exceeds threshold value.
CHAP (Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol)
We already know that PPP works in data link layer of the OSI model. The data
which comes from the upper layers such as Transport Layer or Network Layer
has to be fully compatible with the PPP. For the same purpose, NCP was
discovered. A separate Network Control Protocol (NCP) is provided in order
to encapsulate and negotiate options for the multiple network layer protocols
for every use of network layer protocol. NCP negotiates network-layer
information, for e.g. network address or compression options, after the
connection has been established.
NCPs include functional fields containing standardized codes to indicate the
network layer protocol that PPP encapsulates. Each NCP manages the specific
needs required by its respective network layer protocols. The various NCP
components encapsulate and negotiate options for multiple network layer
protocols.
