Why Do Children Need To Play Not Compete Persuasive Essay
After reading Children Need to Play, Not Compete by Jessica Statsky I thought she brought up some
very valid points. I do think that this is a topic that should be scrutinized. I have a different view of
the subject. I think that competition can be physically, and psychologically harmful if left unchecked
by "abusive/uncaring" adults. I do think that with the right, caring and team work fostering
environment competition can fostered without harmful effects, and can lead to learning lifelong
skills that can bring emotional joy.
When most kids play for typical leagues whether they are fun leagues or competitive leagues
injuries can happen. The injury rate is slightly higher then children with sedentary lifestyles. Studies
have shown that children that are not exposed to sports are less likely to play them later in their
adolescence. This country has a growing epidemic of overweight youth. Children subconsciously
about fitness in a fun manner. Active kids typically remain active throughout their life ... Show more

Jessica mentioned in the essay that competitive sports are psychologically damaging to children.
Kids tie their ability to win and their performance to their self–worth and self–esteem. Her
suggestion for fixing this issue is to not allow any competitive sports that allow scoring between the
ages of six thru ages nine. One of the works that she cited said that children are more survivalist in
nature and not physical. I would argue that from the moment of birth we are competitive in nature.
Children below the age of twelve think more on the survivalist spectrum. However, a crying baby is
trying to survive by competing with the mother for her attention. This competition leads to survival.
If this is not fostered and groomed properly by the adults involved within and outside of the sports
arena then it can cause psychological harm, no different than a neglectful

Fantasy Sports And Its Effect On The National Football League
Abstract
The widespread growth of fantasy sports into a multi–billion dollar industry has made it an
important component of the sports industry, mainly the NFL. All Sports leagues must acknowledge
the impact that fantasy sport has on the way its participants consume their sport. This research paper
examines the conception of fantasy sports and explains it effects on the National Football league.
Consumer involvement with fantasy sports leads to a higher consumption of the NFL products and
services.

NFL: Sports Fantasy Becomes Reality Introduction
This research paper will provide a discussion on the initial conception, importance, and an
explanation on the development of fantasy sport and its adoption by the National Football league
(NFL). The paper will also focus on the concept of fantasy football considered the most popular
fantasy sport, due to the high participation rating, and its effects on the NFL and the various sport
consumers. A brief examination of the increase in consumer loyalty and brand identification as a
result of fantasy football participation as well as the effect of overall consumption of the NFL will
be provided in the following research.
Discussion
The unique presupposition of fantasy sports allows individual participants to act as owners or
general managers of their own sports teams. These members participate in either an online or real–
world draft scenario. Each

Payroll In Major League Sports
Most people think that more money means more success, but that is not always the case in major
league sports. In the MLB, some of the teams with higher payrolls don't do nearly as well as some of
the teams who have small payrolls. Some think that the game is all about money now, but others
think that it is still fair despite the differences in payroll. Major–League Baseball teams differ
greatly in payroll, and its effects on their record vary. Major–League Baseball teams have large
differences in payrolls. While there are teams that have payrolls of over 200 million like the
Dodgers and Yankees, there are also teams who have less than 50 million like the Marlins and the
Astros. The differences in payroll cause blood to boil between teams ... Show more content on

"In fact, six of the teams with among the lowest 10 payrolls are within six games of a playoff berth"
(Nightengale). There is also one team who was in first place, yet had one of the lowest payrolls.
That team is the Kansas City Royals, with the tenth lowest payroll at 94.2 million (Nightengale).
The Commissioner of baseball, Bud Selig, was "euphoric that massive payrolls no longer guarantee
success" (Nightengale). For example, there was one team in the top five of payroll that qualified for
playoffs while the other four did not. In the 2015 season, the Houston Astros, who have one of the
smallest payrolls in the MLB, are sitting on top of their division and looking to make a run at the
playoffs. The Tampa Bay Rays are another example of how a team who isn't paid as well can have a
.500 season. Additionally, the Pittsburgh Pirates are 1 in 5 teams who have a lower payroll this year
and yet are still having a huge winning season. If it weren't for the fact that the Cardinals are beating
everyone in sight, then the Pirates would be on top of their

A Successful Sports League Director
There are a number of career opportunities within the world of sports and it is my aspiration to
change the world one person at a time. I will continue to assess not only the needs in the
organization I am a part of but the current benefits, and recent issues that I have seen especially in
the perspective as a league director. In this paper, I will continue to examine my strategic plan to not
only become a successful Sports League Director but to also share some improvements I proposed
to my director and staff and the outcome thereafter. I will also discuss a few ethical issues and
dilemmas in having a sports league organization that I have already noticed and might face myself
in the future. My job was to officiate various sports like softball, and basketball within my
organization while assisting with a few extra tasks and being in an advisory role for the league
director to note of any areas internally that needed development. There are many factors that
contribute to not only an organizations success but an athlete's as well, such as location of training,
physical and mental health, but no variable matters as much as the interaction that athlete is exposed
to, whether it is with a referee, the facility itself or the its other participants. Regardless of
whichever sport, I will one day have to oversee all sports with unbiase and still manage not to reach
career plateau. I will enforce new and existing policies in the league that I am seeking to run. There

Equipment managers play a huge role in the everyday lives of players. Equipment managers make

Youth Sports Research Paper
Over the years, youth sports have transformed from pickup games to heavily organized sports
leagues. Community recreational leagues formed, where teams played other teams from their
community, or teams from surrounding comminutes. However, that was not the only option for kids.
If the child was good enough and heir parents had enough money, they could join a travel team.
These teams often provided more skilled competition and teammates. Travel teams have greatly
increased in popularity. They are so popular, that some people believe they take away from the
community aspect of children's sports. Travel teams are so popular because many parents believe
that travel teams greatly improve their child's chances of turning into a great athlete or getting a
college scholarship. Many parents get their kids on travel teams, so they will turn into a better sports
player. In comparison to recreational leagues, travel teams tend to have superior completion. I have
played in both recreational and travel soccer leagues. From my own experience and observations,

Gender Inequality In Sports Essay
Gender inequality in sports has been a prominent issue ever since sports has been around. In the
early years of sports, men's were the only gender to play, and the women's were to sit in the
bleachers and spectate. Women could not do things that men could do. However, in the last century,
things changed as women are now being allowed to take part in professional leagues such as the
Women's National Basketball Association, and the Ladies Professional Golf Association. Especially
Softball and Basketball as these businesses has been changing the history of sports.
Just recently; a major problem for women in sports is the female coaches and their salaries. The pay
of male coaches has been constantly growing while the salaries of female coaches has been in a
slump. Another major problem about women in sports is the health risk of the women who
competes. Scientist has recommended when being involved in any sports or other physical activity,

Reality Changes From People Across The World
Reality changes from person to person. Whether something is real or not is determined through the
individual. One may think it's true whereas the other may believe differently. It is common to form
misconceptions on a subject that is relatively new and upcoming. Sports are generally one of the
most common ways we conquer boredom. This entertainment involves, according to the Oxford
Dictionary, physical exertion as well as brain stimulation. With technology emerging, the online
gaming industry has become a vast media culture. Connecting millions across the world, the online
gaming world provides users with an interactive database which engages both their body and their
intellect. Gamers learn to utilize their problem solving skills and are forced to come up with
strategies that require quick decisions. E sports encourage participants to train their brains so that
they are able to deliver a rapid response in certain situations. Gamers face a great deal of pressure as
they conform to the world of entertainment and competition. Therefore, E sports should be
considered real as online gamers and sports athletics both provide an audience with a source of
entertainment as well as being competitive.
The entertainment industry provides its audience a way to release tension by showcasing various
talents that stimulate the brain. Audiences enjoy watching the players practice and so for online
games, such as the popular games known as League of Legends, gamers stream themselves training.

Drug Policies of the Four Major Sport Leagues Essay
Introduction
The four major sport leagues in the United States consist of the National Basketball Association
(NBA), National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), and the National Hockey
League (NHL). All of the leagues have some similarities in their implemented drug policies, such as
the need for testing athletes. Although the policies have similarities, there are many differences
within the leagues, as well. Drug testing in professional sports has increased, due to the rise of
players using illegal substances and Major League Baseball currently has the best drug–testing
program. Drug–testing programs have become very complex and have many unique legal aspects
that these leagues must face.

The NFL suspends its players without pay for any use of illegal substances based on the number of
offenses and the suspensions are four games, eight games, and one full season suspension (Dolich,

testing continues to grow. The MLB can require players to provide blood samples and the NFL had
talks of taking blood samples during training camp in order to test for Human Growth Hormone
(HGH), but the NBA and NHL have not applied these procedures in their programs (Calcaterra,
2013).
Best Drug Policy The policies and procedures for drug testing within the four major sport leagues
are changing rapidly, due to the rise of players using illegal substances. Major League Baseball

Sports And The National Football League
Introduction
There are currently four major professional athletic leagues in America: the National Football
League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the
National Hockey League (NHL). When fans watch their home teams play, it brings great pleasure
and excitement to those who love sports, especially when their home team wins a game. Even if
they do not win, fans will stick by their teams. Local businesses go great lengths to show support for
their local teams. For example, the Reunion Tower in Dallas changes its light colors to support the
local teams on game days. Sports also have a way of connecting fans with places as they cheer for a
touchdown, homerun, or goal at public restaurants and bars. Because team owners are aware that pro
sports play an important role in American society, they brainstorm for new ways to earn additional
income besides selling merchandise and tickets. Now, Sports team owners want to build new state of
the art arenas with premium seats, suites, clubs, and bars to obtain more revenue. The only thing is,
they are not the only ones paying for it. It has become more and more popular in America for
taxpayers to fund renovated or new professional sports arenas located in their cities. However, one
question that ponders the mind of taxpayers is, should the public have to fund the construction of a
renovated or new sports arena in their town? According to Pacific Standards magazine, "Over the

Argumentative Essay On Youth Sports
Youth Sports
Have you ever seen 7–year old's play soccer? Some leagues have them play three on three. What can
you expect from a kid playing that young? You have heard coaches yelling commands at the kids to
keep them on track. During the same time, you probably have heard the coach during a time out or a
break in the game raising his voice; what they should be doing and what they are doing wrong. This
has brought up the debates over the past years involving youth sports and whether you should let
your child play or not. Tee ball, soccer, football, volleyball, basketball, is among the sports parents
contemplate to sign their child up for. Some of that debate also includes what is the perfect age they
should start playing sports. If your child is under 10 years old you should not put your child in youth
sports because; there is a lot of bad coaches, parents interfering with the coaches and officials during
games, and coaches only want to win on game day. As a matter of fact, you can hear or read
evidence of bad coaching in youth sports. "The coach called one player a "f*****g retard" in front
of his teammates." (Coben, Harlan. "That's Not Coaching. It's child Abuse". Opinion World.
Bloomberg). You have probably seen it firsthand. A coach throwing their clipboard, yelling at a
child for missing up, and even telling the kids at halftime what they did wrong instead of what they
did right. Every year if you keep up with youth sports around the nation, not just your state, you can
read about how parents are complaining about having a bad coach for their child, how they did not
play, how they were not taught the sport. Some coaches are only coaching because they signed up
their child to play a sport and they believe they can teach him and others the sport. Knowing the
sport, and knowing how to teach the sport are two different things. Some believe they need to run
their program for 10 and under like a boot camp and yell at the kids and talk down to them in front
of other kids. Most coaches in leagues are not certified to coach so anyone can be a coach, if you
pass a background check. This process does not make every person who signs up their child for
youth sports very confident. A coach who usually volunteers is a

Review Of Chapter Summary: Bling, Bombs, And The Bible
Competition In Chapter 5 , " Bling, Bombs, and the Bible", in the book called Game On: How
Pressure to Win at All Costs Endangers Youth Sports, author Tom Farrey claims that children can
benefit from participation in sports even though the sports are not highly competitive. To support his
argument Farrey uses the examples of Jack Welch, former CEO of GE as well as a description of
how the historical background of youth sports evolved in the United States.I believe Farrey's claim
is invalid because competition is a significant part of adult life and therefore, children must learn to
cope with highly competitive situations from an early age. Additionally, Farrey seems to focus on
non–competitive sports that were prevalent in the past, however, ... Show more content on

To excel in athletic competition is admirable. Most high school and college students show their
ability and skills by playing sports, this activity will help bring up their GPA, and easy to find a job.
Further people who see sports as their career, they take sports more serious because their income

Why did they do that? Sports is more than just a game, sports can help to increase economic

Decline In Youth Sports
The decline in youth sports is affecting many people around the world today and it isn't just the kids
themselves, or parents with children, it includes the average person. If the participation in youth

have a positive effect on them forever.

Cost is a huge problem when it comes to kids participating in youth sports. According to athlete
intelligence parents in the United States spend an average of $671 per year to cover different costs
for sports. These costs may include the participation fee, uniforms, lessons, or coaching from a
private club. As the kids get older they start participating in traveling leagues which can also be very
costly. Overtime all of those things add up and can become very costly for families This is just in
youth sports only, and the cost has increased and has been on the rise.
Another problem would be under trained coaches or coaches that are not properly taught how to
coach young children in youth sports. Farrey (2013) "Only 1 in 5 coaches of youth teams of children
under age 14 say they have been trained in effective motivational technique, and just 1 in 3 in skills
and tactics in the primary sport they coach". Most of the coaches in youth sports today are fathers
that have a kid in the sport, so that might be why they are coaching in the first place. Also they
haven't been properly trained in the first place. According to NRPA there are roughly 3.5 million

Alcohol and Tobacco in Sports
With sports becoming more and more commercialized, sponsorships have taken over professional
sports. In this paper, Alcohol and Tobacco sponsorships will be the issue of this paper. Sports
sponsorship has become an important marketing tool for advertiser's because of the flexibility, broad
reach, and high level of brand or corporate exposure that it affords, (Krapp, 49). Yet some sponsors
have created an uproar with in the society, these are namely alcohol and tobacco products. These
two make up about half of the sponsorship in professional sports today. Sports sponsorship has been

This enables them to present product images that they hope will counteract other negatives in the
culture, (Coakley, 381). This is why you will see more alcohol advertisements than sports drink
advertisements. The alcohol and tobacco companies want to be incorporated with sports since they
are considered good for a person, and they are not great for a person. It makes them good by
association with the sports that they sponsor.
Cigarette ads were banned from television in the United States in 1971 and in many other countries
including Canada and Australia. A key benefit of sports sponsorship is that it provides a legal
loophole for circumventing the ad ban, (Krapp, 51). Tobacco products have also been sponsors of
sporting event's for more than a century. With brands of chewing tobacco sponsoring the majority of
baseball teams and making baseball cards with their brand name on the card since professional
baseball sprung up in America. Tobacco companies have recently taken a lot of fire on their
advertising to the youth of America. A study in Australia found that the brands that were most
popular with children, aged 12 to 14, are the same brands that sponsor the state's major league
football competition,(Krapp, 52).
My opinion on this topic is that the money that both alcohol and tobacco advertising pulls in for
each of the professional sports is good for those sports. On the other hand, is that money worth the
corruption of the youth of America by the constant bombardment

Controversies In Youth Sports
The Controversies in Youth Travel Teams Participation in youth sports in the United States is on the
rise. "Organized youth sports are highly popular for youth and their families, with approximately 45
million children and adolescent participants in the US" (Merkel, 2013). There are many benefits for
children that can be attributed to sports such as: physical activity, learning motor skills, sense of
belonging, stress relief, and many more. With childhood obesity on the rise recreational sports has
never been needed more than it is today. "Over the past three decades, the incidence of obesity in
children has tripled, with one of every three children being affected" (Merkel, 2013). Obesity has
many long–term health problems related to it such as: diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure
cancer, asthma. We can attribute this health problem to changes in our society over like increased
technology, increased crime rates, fast food and isolated suburban neighborhoods. Sports and other
physical activities are needed to keep children from causing further damaged to their future.
However, the days of simply playing ball with your friends are over. It is a different world for young
athletes. Sports at a young age should be fun and a great source of physical activity. Yet, many
children are specializing in one sport early– playing year–round, joining competitive clubs, or travel
teams and participating in special training programs– believing they'll put themselves on the fast

North American Professional Sports League: A Case Study
As each year goes by, the domestic market for the four major North American professional sports
leagues becomes more and more saturated. The saturation of the market limits the domestic growth
opportunities for these leagues. Additionally, the few domestic growth opportunities that are out
there are so limited and unpredictable in their benefits that they are likely not worth their
opportunity cost. In light of the limited growth opportunities on the home front, North American
sports leagues have began to focus their opportunities on the relatively untouched international
markets. Over the past few decades the MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL have all made efforts, with
varying degrees of magnitude and success, to expand their brand internationally. ... Show more

NBA is the league that has had the most success and is at the same time the league best suited for
further success in the future. The NBA's success, while certainly helped by the work of long–term

Drone Racing Essay
Why Drone Racing is Different
There is a very good reason why ESPN has begun televising drone races just a few weeks ago:
popularity. Dubbed an aerial version of NASCAR by CNet, drone racing has become wildly popular
in a very short amount of time. America's first national drone racing championship was only held in
summer of 2015, so the fact that ESPN is jumping on the sport during its infancy is impressive. As
with video games, drone racing requires top–notch hardware, excellent skill and solid strategy to
master. Unfortunately, the two fields are also similar in that they are often sports of the affluent.
Even so, the fact that drone racing is one of few sports that requires sheer wit versus physical
prowess is what makes it so different compared to traditional sports like football or baseball. Drone
racing has the added appeal of immersion, both for racers and spectators alike. All drone racers are
required to have what are essentially "drone goggles," which carry a live video feed from the drone's
on–board camera. This gives much of the sport its name: first–person view drone racing, otherwise
known as FPV racing. The first–person perspective assists in navigation and in detecting rule
violations. It's also streamed to a monitor so the audience can see what is happening both from the
drone's point of view as well.
With drone racing leagues popping up all over the place and cash prizes as high as $250,000 being
up for grabs, it's little surprise that drone racing has

Men vs. Women in Professional Sports
Men Vs. Women in Professional Sports Ever since the ancient Greece, men have held athletic

Most sports still don't have men and women directly competing against one another. In the past
athletic instructors adapted the rules to make sports less physically taxing for women. For instance
in basketball, to ensure that girls maintain proper decorum, they were forbidden from snatching the

most popular sport among college–age females, according to a recent study by the National College

team launched a twelve–city tour against a team of world all–stars in the months following its win.
They wanted to demonstrate to the USSF (United States Soccer Federation) that a woman's

maintain the growth of women's soccer. Some female sports leagues have not been as successful. In
2001, there were a professional woman's football and soccer leagues launched. The football league

The sporting franchise industry is highly competitive, and must remain competitive of emerging
trends in technology, and consumers. Sports franchises monitor these trends in order to plan a
strategy for marketing event tickets and advertisements. Moreover, there must obtain multiple
sources of revenue in order to be successful.
In the case of the National Football League, one of the trends is the rise of acceptance and
viewership of soccer in the United States. The NFL must closely monitor this emerging trend and
create a strategy that retains its' current loyal fan base. When creating a marketing plan for the NFL

Compared to most other professional sports leagues in the United States, there is a lot of financial
disparity between small market and large market teams in Major League Baseball. Moneyball: The
Art of Winning an Unfair Game is a novel about how an unlikely general manager, Billy Beane,
used unconventional statistical analysis to enable the Oakland Athletics to outplay much wealthier
teams in the league. The problem faced by Beane and the Athletics was competing against large–
market teams that were able to afford the services of the "best players" in the league. Through the
use of sabermetrics, Beane and his staff found a solution to overcome their limited budget ... Show

Baseball is a true "team sport".
Sabermetrics, the statistical method applied by Bean and his acquaintance Paul DePodesta deviated
from these overused and overvalued measures, and focused on team players, not volatile superstars
(Moneyball). Sabermetrics revolved around the analysis of undervalued statistics–primarily on–base
percentage, the number of times a player swings at the first pitch, and the average number of pitches
per at–bat a player sees (Moneyball). With this tactic, Billy Beane and the Oakland Athletics were
able to win many more games than they would have if they were constrained by overvalued players.
Beane was able to use this ingenious method of statistical analysis to discern the unique talents of
undervalued players that did not meet the statistical criteria of big market teams. With a very
specifically assembled team, whereby some players were even forced to switch positions, the
Oakland Athletics had seemed to overcome the odds.
A prime example of the potential success of sabermetrics was seen in a player named Scott
Hatteberg. Hatteberg spent most of his career lingering around the Boston Red Sox organization as a
catcher–both in the minor leagues and in the major leagues (Moneyball). Hatteberg was seen as a
very average catcher and hitter throughout the big leagues. He did his job well enough, however he
did not stand out in popular statistical categories such as homeruns and RBIs. Unacknowledged by
the Red Sox, however,

Youth Sports Teach Valuable Lessons
There is a massive debate about youth sports leagues. Many say youth sports teach valuable lessons
of leadership and teamwork. However some of those people say the lessons learned by playing
youth sports are being replaced by a win at all costs attitude. However, it is important to realize the
multiple huge benefits of youth sports way outweigh the downsides. Youth sports not only promote
a healthy lifestyle, but teach valuable lessons and incredibly important values.
To start off, youth sports support are vital to a child's physical wellbeing and mental health. Jim

Youth sports help youth build strong morals and values. Stephen Keener describes the Little League
World Series as been filled with heartwarming scenes. Some of these include, "A third baseman
giving a high five to an opposing player as he rounds the bases after a home run." This shows the
values these kids have learned from youth sports. To work together, and not lash out at people, but
just have fun. People of all ages are inspired by these acts of kindness. Stephen Kenner also says,
"While Striving to win, children learn about teamwork, leadership and sportsmanship, all of which
can contribute to their development as solid citizens." All of these values are critically important to
children as they Develop, learn, and grow up. Children do not only learn from being humble, but
also learn by trying their best to win.
While many think youth sports are important, some think youth sports are not good for children,
mostly if played every day for long periods of time. David Greier says "More kids are playing sports
than ever before and with that injuries have skyrocketed." David is explaining that we know youth
sports cause injuries, because the amount of injuries in kids is increasing at the same rate that kids
are joining youth sports. Youth sports can cause wear and tear on children, which can cause serious

a helmet hit from the current player Holati Ngata unleashes 1700 pounds of force.
The National Football League is constantly working on making the game safer. There needs to be a
waiver in the contract of the players that prevents them suing the league for any post career health
issues. If the players were not part of the National Football League Players Association, a labor
union for the players, the waiver would already be in place. The players union says that it would be
against the collective bargaining agreement for the NFL to come up with such waiver (cite.) The
waiver probably stems from the lawsuits against the NFL by former players. The number of suits
continues to grow with the largest one being nearly 800 million dollars. The former players accused
the league of hiding the long–term effects of concussions and rushing players back onto the field,
while profiting from the games violence. There have been multiple players who have been on the
NFL's side and said that they would be willing to sign a waiver saying that they would not sue the
league if any post football health issues occurred.

have drawn a lot of criticism. A friend of mine refers to it as the "No Fun League" instead of the

College Football Benefits
There is a serious inequality in the world today. Groups that put "blood, sweat, and tears" into their
cause, day after day, have once again been excluded from what they want most. That is, of course,
the college football playoff. The playoffs, which have only been in effect for two years, has already
led to controversial decisions on which four teams to include in the games. There needs to be an
expansion in the college football playoff to give the lower ranked teams a chance to show their
worth, promote equality between conferences, and prepare athletes for professional football. This
expansion will also help lead to a more equal and intriguing post season experience for teams and

A main reason they think this is that by doing so, teams that are not deserving of the college football
playoffs would be allowed in. They have a point in that some years, there truly are only four or five
teams that have a sufficient resume to battle for the trophy. But there are more often years where
there are anywhere from seven to twelve teams that are close in ability. Although it would be most
fair to change the amount of teams allowed to play from year to year, this would never happen with
the preparation the NCAA has to make. The benefit of the doubt must then go to the larger amount
of teams, as it is the most fair in all cases. It would be most beneficial to allow the bigger group of
teams in the years there are enough, and have to fill the years there is not. This will also make for
more entertaining games to watch at the close of the season. As this shows, the benefits to this
system outnumber the negatives. Expansion of the college football playoff is necessary because it
gives the lower ranked teams a chance to show their worth, promotes equality between conferences,
and prepares athletes for game play in professional football. It will also allow more entertainment
for fans, and a more exciting post season experience. Let's now come together and end this terrible
inequality happening in our own country, and bring peace to college football fans

This causes the muscular hypertrophy as the muscles for the movement. In rugby league the strength
training is characterised by free/fixed weights (weight training), elastic training (plyometrics) and
hydraulic training (manual resistance). Rugby league requires strength & power for tackling,
breaking tackles, jumping, increasing acceleration and changing direction. Weight training involves
the muscle developing force to overcome this load. Training with a fixed load is similar except this
time the muscle develops force to overcome the weight stacked on the machine . An example of this
training is using dumbbells or barbells for 6–10 reps per set. Plyometric training is tension in the
band that provides an opposition to contraction, resistance is greatest at end of movement when
tension is highest. An example of a plyometric exercise is the squat jump, this involves first bending
at the hip and knee, then jumping into the air as high as possible then repeating as soon as you land.
Manual resistance is the effort required through full range (gravity does not assist return); faster
movement = greater resistance. An example of manual resistance is a bicep curl, contracting the
muscle and using the weight to lower, increasing the use of muscle used. Strength training is very
effective in rugby league in the increased strength & power which plays a major role in reducing the

The League Baseball Is The Only Major American Sports League
It is generally assumed with sports teams that the more you pay, the more you win. Without further
insight this sounds like a logical statement. But is it factual. Of the four major American sports
leagues all but one have a salary cap. A salary cap is defined as the maximum amount a team can
pay in player salaries before they are required to pay a luxury tax. Major League baseball is the only
major American sports league to not utilize a salary cap, thus making it an exemplary model to
investigate the abstract of this paper. There are several factors that determine the payroll of an MLB
franchise such as media rights, concession sales, and ticket revenue. Media rights are not equal for

As alluded to earlier, MLB franchises are awarded exclusive rights to broadcast games in their local
markets creating a monopoly in the franchise 's immediate area. It must also be taken into account
that when comparing attendance averages and price comparisons that not all ballparks have the same
capacity or have equal numbers of choice seats. Nor do they share the same number of seats where
there may be obstructions and prices are discounted. It must also be noted that not all markets are
equal in terms of population and demand for sports entertainment when there are other professional
sports franchises in that local market. With those disclaimers in place we can now analyze if ticket
demand is elastic, unit elastic or inelastic.
II. Elastic Demand Analysis Applying what is known about micro economic theory we can equate
that in a MLB team 's local market the team is a single product firm and that it will maximize profits
when the additional cost of production is equal to the added revenue from selling the product
(marginal cost = marginal revenue). When a team sells more tickets, its revenue will increase, unless
the team decreases ticket prices to sell more tickets than the revenue will be offset by the reduced
ticket price. When the demand for tickets is elastic, lowering ticket price will cause revenues to
increase, since marginal revenue will be positive. When the demand for tickets is unit elastic,
revenues will neither

Benefits Of Paying College Athletes
Paying College Athletes For over a decade, there has been an ongoing debate for and against paying
college athletes. Those in favor quickly point out the benefits to players. Those against this practice
concentrate on the possible detriment to both the educational and athletic systems currently in place
at institutions of higher learning. Merit can be found in both arguments; however, the changes that
would be necessary to put the payment practice into place would take years to implement. Many
current and former athletes and coaches have spoken out publicly in favor of paying athletes a small
stipend or salary while they are in college. One of the reasons most frequently cited in favor of
payment is the risk of physical injury to the athlete. These injuries can be career ending both on and
off the field. If a player is injured during practice or a game and they are unable to continue playing,
they are likely to lose their athletic scholarship. Without these scholarships many players would not
be able to cover the gap left by their financial aid in their tuition. If the players are paid per game,
there may be money available to finish their educations. Because of the severity of some of these
injuries, may have to be changed to something less demanding physically that the players are able to
do. This could result in a postponed graduation date. These injuries often also lead to extended
periods of medical care and expensive medical bills that neither the player nor the

Why Do Children Need To Play Not Compete Persuasive Essay

  • 1. Why Do Children Need To Play Not Compete Persuasive Essay After reading Children Need to Play, Not Compete by Jessica Statsky I thought she brought up some very valid points. I do think that this is a topic that should be scrutinized. I have a different view of the subject. I think that competition can be physically, and psychologically harmful if left unchecked by "abusive/uncaring" adults. I do think that with the right, caring and team work fostering environment competition can fostered without harmful effects, and can lead to learning lifelong skills that can bring emotional joy. When most kids play for typical leagues whether they are fun leagues or competitive leagues injuries can happen. The injury rate is slightly higher then children with sedentary lifestyles. Studies have shown that children that are not exposed to sports are less likely to play them later in their adolescence. This country has a growing epidemic of overweight youth. Children subconsciously about fitness in a fun manner. Active kids typically remain active throughout their life ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jessica mentioned in the essay that competitive sports are psychologically damaging to children. Kids tie their ability to win and their performance to their self–worth and self–esteem. Her suggestion for fixing this issue is to not allow any competitive sports that allow scoring between the ages of six thru ages nine. One of the works that she cited said that children are more survivalist in nature and not physical. I would argue that from the moment of birth we are competitive in nature. Children below the age of twelve think more on the survivalist spectrum. However, a crying baby is trying to survive by competing with the mother for her attention. This competition leads to survival. If this is not fostered and groomed properly by the adults involved within and outside of the sports arena then it can cause psychological harm, no different than a neglectful ... • 5. Payroll In Major League Sports Most people think that more money means more success, but that is not always the case in major league sports. In the MLB, some of the teams with higher payrolls don't do nearly as well as some of the teams who have small payrolls. Some think that the game is all about money now, but others think that it is still fair despite the differences in payroll. Major–League Baseball teams differ greatly in payroll, and its effects on their record vary. Major–League Baseball teams have large differences in payrolls. While there are teams that have payrolls of over 200 million like the Dodgers and Yankees, there are also teams who have less than 50 million like the Marlins and the Astros. The differences in payroll cause blood to boil between teams ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "In fact, six of the teams with among the lowest 10 payrolls are within six games of a playoff berth" (Nightengale). There is also one team who was in first place, yet had one of the lowest payrolls. That team is the Kansas City Royals, with the tenth lowest payroll at 94.2 million (Nightengale). The Commissioner of baseball, Bud Selig, was "euphoric that massive payrolls no longer guarantee success" (Nightengale). For example, there was one team in the top five of payroll that qualified for playoffs while the other four did not. In the 2015 season, the Houston Astros, who have one of the smallest payrolls in the MLB, are sitting on top of their division and looking to make a run at the playoffs. The Tampa Bay Rays are another example of how a team who isn't paid as well can have a .500 season. Additionally, the Pittsburgh Pirates are 1 in 5 teams who have a lower payroll this year and yet are still having a huge winning season. If it weren't for the fact that the Cardinals are beating everyone in sight, then the Pirates would be on top of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. A Successful Sports League Director There are a number of career opportunities within the world of sports and it is my aspiration to change the world one person at a time. I will continue to assess not only the needs in the organization I am a part of but the current benefits, and recent issues that I have seen especially in the perspective as a league director. In this paper, I will continue to examine my strategic plan to not only become a successful Sports League Director but to also share some improvements I proposed to my director and staff and the outcome thereafter. I will also discuss a few ethical issues and dilemmas in having a sports league organization that I have already noticed and might face myself in the future. My job was to officiate various sports like softball, and basketball within my organization while assisting with a few extra tasks and being in an advisory role for the league director to note of any areas internally that needed development. There are many factors that contribute to not only an organizations success but an athlete's as well, such as location of training, physical and mental health, but no variable matters as much as the interaction that athlete is exposed to, whether it is with a referee, the facility itself or the its other participants. Regardless of whichever sport, I will one day have to oversee all sports with unbiase and still manage not to reach career plateau. I will enforce new and existing policies in the league that I am seeking to run. There must be a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Jay-Z's Roc Nation: A Career In Sports Management The major of Sports management has always been intriguing to me; I have always wanted to be apart of sports whether it is in the communications field or in the sports management field. This assignment allowed me to look at the different jobs that are available to sports management majors. The research I conducted involved sports agents, Equipment managers, Directors of sports marketing, professional scouts, and athletic directors. I felt these five areas were the most intriguing and gave me different spectrums of the business that is sports. Equipment managers make sure all uniforms; cleats, skates, balls, bats, and whatever else the athletes needs are up to their standards. Equipment managers make sure everything's running smoothly and there isn't a problem. They show up early and stay late. In an article on Workinsports.com an assistant equipment manager talked about his relationship with the athletes. He says, "Working with athletes is great, The players recognize a lot of the hard work that you do and really appreciate the effort that the staff puts in to try and put the team in a position to succeed as best we can." The interaction between the clubhouse workers and the players is important. • 11. Youth Sports Research Paper Over the years, youth sports have transformed from pickup games to heavily organized sports leagues. Community recreational leagues formed, where teams played other teams from their community, or teams from surrounding comminutes. However, that was not the only option for kids. If the child was good enough and heir parents had enough money, they could join a travel team. These teams often provided more skilled competition and teammates. Travel teams have greatly increased in popularity. They are so popular, that some people believe they take away from the community aspect of children's sports. Travel teams are so popular because many parents believe that travel teams greatly improve their child's chances of turning into a great athlete or getting a college scholarship. Many parents get their kids on travel teams, so they will turn into a better sports player. In comparison to recreational leagues, travel teams tend to have superior completion. For instance, at my high school there was never many college recruiters there for soccer. However, at my club soccer games I saw several recruiters. In the early years of sports, men's were the only gender to play, and the women's were to sit in the bleachers and spectate. Women could not do things that men could do. However, in the last century, things changed as women are now being allowed to take part in professional leagues such as the Women's National Basketball Association, and the Ladies Professional Golf Association. Especially Softball and Basketball as these businesses has been changing the history of sports. Just recently; a major problem for women in sports is the female coaches and their salaries. The pay of male coaches has been constantly growing while the salaries of female coaches has been in a slump. Another major problem about women in sports is the health risk of the women who competes. • 15. Reality Changes From People Across The World Reality changes from person to person. Whether something is real or not is determined through the individual. One may think it's true whereas the other may believe differently. It is common to form misconceptions on a subject that is relatively new and upcoming. Sports are generally one of the most common ways we conquer boredom. This entertainment involves, according to the Oxford Dictionary, physical exertion as well as brain stimulation. With technology emerging, the online gaming industry has become a vast media culture. Connecting millions across the world, the online gaming world provides users with an interactive database which engages both their body and their intellect. Gamers learn to utilize their problem solving skills and are forced to come up with strategies that require quick decisions. E sports encourage participants to train their brains so that they are able to deliver a rapid response in certain situations. Gamers face a great deal of pressure as they conform to the world of entertainment and competition. Therefore, E sports should be considered real as online gamers and sports athletics both provide an audience with a source of entertainment as well as being competitive. The entertainment industry provides its audience a way to release tension by showcasing various talents that stimulate the brain. • 23. Drug Policies of the Four Major Sport Leagues Essay Introduction The four major sport leagues in the United States consist of the National Basketball Association (NBA), National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), and the National Hockey League (NHL). All of the leagues have some similarities in their implemented drug policies, such as the need for testing athletes. Although the policies have similarities, there are many differences within the leagues, as well. Drug testing in professional sports has increased, due to the rise of players using illegal substances and Major League Baseball currently has the best drug–testing program. The NFL suspends its players without pay for any use of illegal substances based on the number of offenses and the suspensions are four games, eight games, and one full season suspension (Dolich, 2013). Each league has improved its policies in recent years, but the support for increased and better testing continues to grow. The MLB can require players to provide blood samples and the NFL had talks of taking blood samples during training camp in order to test for Human Growth Hormone (HGH), but the NBA and NHL have not applied these procedures in their programs (Calcaterra, 2013). Best Drug Policy The policies and procedures for drug testing within the four major sport leagues are changing rapidly, due to the rise of players using illegal substances. Major League Baseball currently has the best drug–testing program of the major sport leagues. Many of the substances athletes are taking can only be detected through blood testing. Major League Baseball is the only league that has fully executed blood testing to detect and deter those whom are using, or wish to use, HGH and other banned substances. Not only has Major League Baseball applied blood testing at the elite level, it has also implemented it in Minor League Baseball, as well (http://sports.espn.go.com). • 25. Sports And The National Football League Introduction There are currently four major professional athletic leagues in America: the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the National Hockey League (NHL). When fans watch their home teams play, it brings great pleasure and excitement to those who love sports, especially when their home team wins a game. Even if they do not win, fans will stick by their teams. Local businesses go great lengths to show support for their local teams. For example, the Reunion Tower in Dallas changes its light colors to support the local teams on game days. Sports also have a way of connecting fans with places as they cheer for a touchdown, homerun, or goal at public restaurants and bars. Because team owners are aware that pro sports play an important role in American society, they brainstorm for new ways to earn additional income besides selling merchandise and tickets. Now, Sports team owners want to build new state of the art arenas with premium seats, suites, clubs, and bars to obtain more revenue. The only thing is, they are not the only ones paying for it. It has become more and more popular in America for taxpayers to fund renovated or new professional sports arenas located in their cities. However, one question that ponders the mind of taxpayers is, should the public have to fund the construction of a renovated or new sports arena in their town? • 29. Argumentative Essay On Youth Sports Youth Sports Have you ever seen 7–year old's play soccer? Some leagues have them play three on three. What can you expect from a kid playing that young? You have heard coaches yelling commands at the kids to keep them on track. During the same time, you probably have heard the coach during a time out or a break in the game raising his voice; what they should be doing and what they are doing wrong. This has brought up the debates over the past years involving youth sports and whether you should let your child play or not. Tee ball, soccer, football, volleyball, basketball, is among the sports parents contemplate to sign their child up for. Some of that debate also includes what is the perfect age they should start playing sports. If your child is under 10 years old you should not put your child in youth sports because; there is a lot of bad coaches, parents interfering with the coaches and officials during games, and coaches only want to win on game day. As a matter of fact, you can hear or read evidence of bad coaching in youth sports. "The coach called one player a "f*****g retard" in front of his teammates." (Coben, Harlan. "That's Not Coaching. It's child Abuse". Opinion World. Bloomberg). You have probably seen it firsthand. A coach throwing their clipboard, yelling at a child for missing up, and even telling the kids at halftime what they did wrong instead of what they did right. Every year if you keep up with youth sports around the nation, not just your state, you can read about how parents are complaining about having a bad coach for their child, how they did not play, how they were not taught the sport. Some coaches are only coaching because they signed up their child to play a sport and they believe they can teach him and others the sport. Knowing the sport, and knowing how to teach the sport are two different things. Some believe they need to run their program for 10 and under like a boot camp and yell at the kids and talk down to them in front of other kids. Most coaches in leagues are not certified to coach so anyone can be a coach, if you pass a background check. This process does not make every person who signs up their child for youth sports very confident. A coach who usually volunteers is a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Review Of Chapter Summary: Bling, Bombs, And The Bible Competition In Chapter 5 , " Bling, Bombs, and the Bible", in the book called Game On: How Pressure to Win at All Costs Endangers Youth Sports, author Tom Farrey claims that children can benefit from participation in sports even though the sports are not highly competitive. To support his argument Farrey uses the examples of Jack Welch, former CEO of GE as well as a description of how the historical background of youth sports evolved in the United States.I believe Farrey's claim is invalid because competition is a significant part of adult life and therefore, children must learn to cope with highly competitive situations from an early age. Cost is a huge problem when it comes to kids participating in youth sports. According to athlete intelligence parents in the United States spend an average of $671 per year to cover different costs for sports. These costs may include the participation fee, uniforms, lessons, or coaching from a private club. As the kids get older they start participating in traveling leagues which can also be very costly. Overtime all of those things add up and can become very costly for families This is just in youth sports only, and the cost has increased and has been on the rise. Another problem would be under trained coaches or coaches that are not properly taught how to coach young children in youth sports. Farrey (2013) "Only 1 in 5 coaches of youth teams of children under age 14 say they have been trained in effective motivational technique, and just 1 in 3 in skills and tactics in the primary sport they coach". Most of the coaches in youth sports today are fathers that have a kid in the sport, so that might be why they are coaching in the first place. In this paper, Alcohol and Tobacco sponsorships will be the issue of this paper. Sports sponsorship has become an important marketing tool for advertiser's because of the flexibility, broad reach, and high level of brand or corporate exposure that it affords, (Krapp, 49). This is why you will see more alcohol advertisements than sports drink advertisements. The alcohol and tobacco companies want to be incorporated with sports since they are considered good for a person, and they are not great for a person. It makes them good by association with the sports that they sponsor. Cigarette ads were banned from television in the United States in 1971 and in many other countries including Canada and Australia. A key benefit of sports sponsorship is that it provides a legal loophole for circumventing the ad ban, (Krapp, 51). Tobacco products have also been sponsors of sporting event's for more than a century. With brands of chewing tobacco sponsoring the majority of baseball teams and making baseball cards with their brand name on the card since professional baseball sprung up in America. Dubbed an aerial version of NASCAR by CNet, drone racing has become wildly popular in a very short amount of time. America's first national drone racing championship was only held in summer of 2015, so the fact that ESPN is jumping on the sport during its infancy is impressive. As with video games, drone racing requires top–notch hardware, excellent skill and solid strategy to master. Unfortunately, the two fields are also similar in that they are often sports of the affluent. Even so, the fact that drone racing is one of few sports that requires sheer wit versus physical prowess is what makes it so different compared to traditional sports like football or baseball. Drone racing has the added appeal of immersion, both for racers and spectators alike. All drone racers are required to have what are essentially "drone goggles," which carry a live video feed from the drone's on–board camera. This gives much of the sport its name: first–person view drone racing, otherwise known as FPV racing. The first–person perspective assists in navigation and in detecting rule violations. It's also streamed to a monitor so the audience can see what is happening both from the drone's point of view as well. Sabermetrics, the statistical method applied by Bean and his acquaintance Paul DePodesta deviated from these overused and overvalued measures, and focused on team players, not volatile superstars (Moneyball). With this tactic, Billy Beane and the Oakland Athletics were able to win many more games than they would have if they were constrained by overvalued players. Beane was able to use this ingenious method of statistical analysis to discern the unique talents of undervalued players that did not meet the statistical criteria of big market teams. With a very specifically assembled team, whereby some players were even forced to switch positions, the Oakland Athletics had seemed to overcome the odds. While BALCO's case was finalized, Bonds was still under investigation for months on end, which only escalated further when his most trusted client Greg Anderson admitted to giving out steroids to numerous baseball players, prompting people to evaluate whether Bonds was telling the truth, or cheating the game of ... • 63. College Football Benefits There is a serious inequality in the world today. Groups that put "blood, sweat, and tears" into their cause, day after day, have once again been excluded from what they want most. That is, of course, the college football playoff. The playoffs, which have only been in effect for two years, has already led to controversial decisions on which four teams to include in the games. There needs to be an expansion in the college football playoff to give the lower ranked teams a chance to show their worth, promote equality between conferences, and prepare athletes for professional football. This expansion will also help lead to a more equal and intriguing post season experience for teams and fans. First, some background information on the college football ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A main reason they think this is that by doing so, teams that are not deserving of the college football playoffs would be allowed in. They have a point in that some years, there truly are only four or five teams that have a sufficient resume to battle for the trophy. But there are more often years where there are anywhere from seven to twelve teams that are close in ability. Although it would be most fair to change the amount of teams allowed to play from year to year, this would never happen with the preparation the NCAA has to make. The benefit of the doubt must then go to the larger amount of teams, as it is the most fair in all cases. It would be most beneficial to allow the bigger group of teams in the years there are enough, and have to fill the years there is not. This will also make for more entertaining games to watch at the close of the season. As this shows, the benefits to this system outnumber the negatives. Expansion of the college football playoff is necessary because it gives the lower ranked teams a chance to show their worth, promotes equality between conferences, and prepares athletes for game play in professional football. It will also allow more entertainment for fans, and a more exciting post season experience. Let's now come together and end this terrible inequality happening in our own country, and bring peace to college football fans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Anaerobic Training Research Paper There are different types of training that are suited to different sports, so it is very important that the athlete picks the type of training that will result in performance improvements that are relevant to their sport. Depending on the sport chosen, the training methods must be appropriate to the progress showed in the effects in their performance. An athlete in Rugby League (NRL) is required to train their aerobic fitness, anaerobic fitness, flexibility and strength training. Aerobic training is where the aerobic (oxygen dependent) system is the dominant energy system being used. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This causes the muscular hypertrophy as the muscles for the movement. In rugby league the strength training is characterised by free/fixed weights (weight training), elastic training (plyometrics) and hydraulic training (manual resistance). Rugby league requires strength & power for tackling, breaking tackles, jumping, increasing acceleration and changing direction. Weight training involves the muscle developing force to overcome this load. Training with a fixed load is similar except this time the muscle develops force to overcome the weight stacked on the machine . An example of this training is using dumbbells or barbells for 6–10 reps per set. Plyometric training is tension in the band that provides an opposition to contraction, resistance is greatest at end of movement when tension is highest. An example of a plyometric exercise is the squat jump, this involves first bending at the hip and knee, then jumping into the air as high as possible then repeating as soon as you land. Manual resistance is the effort required through full range (gravity does not assist return); faster movement = greater resistance. An example of manual resistance is a bicep curl, contracting the muscle and using the weight to lower, increasing the use of muscle used. Strength training is very effective in rugby league in the increased strength & power which plays a major role in reducing the risk of muscle and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. The League Baseball Is The Only Major American Sports League It is generally assumed with sports teams that the more you pay, the more you win. Without further insight this sounds like a logical statement. But is it factual. Of the four major American sports leagues all but one have a salary cap. A salary cap is defined as the maximum amount a team can pay in player salaries before they are required to pay a luxury tax. Major League baseball is the only major American sports league to not utilize a salary cap, thus making it an exemplary model to investigate the abstract of this paper. There are several factors that determine the payroll of an MLB franchise such as media rights, concession sales, and ticket revenue. Media rights are not equal for all teams, thus some teams may have an unfair ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As alluded to earlier, MLB franchises are awarded exclusive rights to broadcast games in their local markets creating a monopoly in the franchise 's immediate area. It must also be taken into account that when comparing attendance averages and price comparisons that not all ballparks have the same capacity or have equal numbers of choice seats. Nor do they share the same number of seats where there may be obstructions and prices are discounted. It must also be noted that not all markets are equal in terms of population and demand for sports entertainment when there are other professional sports franchises in that local market. With those disclaimers in place we can now analyze if ticket demand is elastic, unit elastic or inelastic. II. Elastic Demand Analysis Applying what is known about micro economic theory we can equate that in a MLB team 's local market the team is a single product firm and that it will maximize profits when the additional cost of production is equal to the added revenue from selling the product (marginal cost = marginal revenue). When a team sells more tickets, its revenue will increase, unless the team decreases ticket prices to sell more tickets than the revenue will be offset by the reduced ticket price. When the demand for tickets is elastic, lowering ticket price will cause revenues to increase, since marginal revenue will be positive. When the demand for tickets is unit elastic, revenues will neither ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Benefits Of Paying College Athletes Paying College Athletes For over a decade, there has been an ongoing debate for and against paying college athletes. Those in favor quickly point out the benefits to players. Those against this practice concentrate on the possible detriment to both the educational and athletic systems currently in place at institutions of higher learning. Merit can be found in both arguments; however, the changes that would be necessary to put the payment practice into place would take years to implement. Many current and former athletes and coaches have spoken out publicly in favor of paying athletes a small stipend or salary while they are in college. One of the reasons most frequently cited in favor of payment is the risk of physical injury to the athlete. These injuries can be career ending both on and off the field. If a player is injured during practice or a game and they are unable to continue playing, they are likely to lose their athletic scholarship. Without these scholarships many players would not be able to cover the gap left by their financial aid in their tuition. If the players are paid per game, there may be money available to finish their educations. Because of the severity of some of these injuries, may have to be changed to something less demanding physically that the players are able to do. This could result in a postponed graduation date. These injuries often also lead to extended periods of medical care and expensive medical bills that neither the player nor the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Essay Men Vs. Women in Professional Sports Men Vs. Women in Professional Sports      Ever since the ancient Greece, men have held athletic competitions or sports. It is only in modern times that women have had an opportunity to compete. Most sports still don't have men and women directly competing against one another. In the past athletic instructors adapted the rules to make sports less physically taxing for women. For instance in basketball, to ensure that girls maintain proper decorum, they were forbidden from snatching the ball and dribbling it more than three times in row. Females would not be considered strong enough to play a full–court basketball game until 1971. Women have struggled to be taken seriously as athletes for more than two centuries. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Women first started taking great strides in professional sports during World War II. When the male professional baseball players went off to war, a group of team owners started a professional league for woman (the All–American Girls Professional Baseball League). This league turned out to be successful. After the men came back from war, however the woman's league could no longer sustain itself financially and had to shut down. Over the past twenty years, however there have been more and more professional women sports leagues opening and prospering. One such league is the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association), while the league opened being financially backed by the male league (NBA) over its first five years it has become a financial success with high profits and good TV ratings on major and cable networks. Like in many male–dominated fields, football is a game that catered to men mostly. Consequently, the majority of sports businesses, marketers and advertising campaigns are focused only on male fans. However recently, women are making its presence known as die–hard fans which makes a huge impact. With millions of fans nationwide, women make up nearly half the league's fan base where 45 % who attend the game each weekend are females. Companies that do not recognize these statistics will lose many opportunities translated in lost dollars. • 77. American Sports Viewer The New American Sports Viewer Bridget Fieler According to Jim Morrison, "Whoever controls the media, controls the mind." In sports, today, that means that ESPN and other sports channels control which sports and teams you see on TV. And you won't even realize what you're missing out on. The past two FIFA World Cups prove that there is a viewership for soccer in America, yet ESPN, Fox Sports 1, and NBC Sports Network still chose to broadcast English Premier League games over the stateside Major League Soccer. The notion that soccer is not an American sport is outdated. According to Nielsen ratings, a record U.S. audience of 24.7 million people watched the United States take on Portugal in last years match versus 18 million that were watching the NBA final at the same time. And with baseballs viewership dropping even lower to 14.9 million in the World Series, it really becomes apparent that we are being told what sports are "American" enough for us to watch. ...
