2. Once upon a time… long long ago..in the land of Aladdin, there
lived a magical genie, it usually lived in old lamps. They have
some supernatural powers like they can go through walls,
change forms, take over human assignments etc. There masters
usually make use of them for various activities.
Modern Genie’s..
Well, these genies do exist very much even today, but they
don't live in old lamps any more..but in IoT devices, they are
called as “Alexa”
Mr. Mani...a character in every department
Mani… an Assistant Professor in a city college… was desperate
of getting a Ph.D as many of his colleagues.. (peer pressure), but
in fact he have no idea.. about “what”, “where” and “how” to
do it… (of course “why” to do it as well..). The one most im-
portant reason is, he loved to be called as Dr. Mani….
Entry of Alexa…
Mani, once got an opportunity to attend a “Free” seminar of
amazon for its Alexa promotional roadshow… He was im-
pressed by Alexa’s features… and become a fan of Alexa…. and
finally managed to get an Alexa for his own…
An affair with Alexa…
Once he came back home with Alexa, he was so curious to
get answers for all his questions and here he goes...
Mani: Alexa, How to do a PhD research?
Alexa Started giving the procedures meticulously,
Alexa replied in its base voice “You have to follow
the following steps:”
1. Preparing a research proposal
2. Carrying out a literature review
3. Conducting research and collecting results
4. Producing an original thesis
5. Writing up your dissertation
6. Defending your PhD at a viva voce
Mani didn’t expect this lengthy procedure from Alexa, he
continued..…
Mani: Alexa How to get a PhD supervisor?
Alexa: (so enthusiastically continues its reply): “You have
to follow the following steps:”
1. Matching Your Research Interests with Possible Advisors
2. Identify what you intend to research.
3. Check faculty bios
4. Contact potential advisors.
5. Learning More About Potential Advisors
6. Look more closely at individual publications (Google Scholar)
7. Contact other graduate student
8. Evaluate each potential advisor’s character.
9. Making Your Decision
10. Narrow down your list.
11. Know what you want in an advisor.
12. Set specific expectations for your relationship with your advisor
13. Develop your relationship with your advisor
14. Have a backup plan (or two) in place.
By this time Mani was little annoyed with this response, but
still continued his next question:
Mani: Alexa, how to select a research topic?
Now, Alexa (took few moments and continue its answer)… “You
have to follow the following steps:”
1. brainstorm for ideas
2. choose a topic that will enable you to read and understand the literature
3. ensure that the topic is manageable and that material is available
4. make a list of key words
5. be flexible
6. define your topic as a focused research question
7. research and read more about your topic
8. formulate a thesis statement and……
Before Alexa completes the answer… Mani asked his next
question…
Mani: Alexa…How to do review of research?
Alexa (this time, an unusual time delay and it continued with a
draggy voice..) “You have to follow the following steps:”
1. Problem formulation -- which topic or field is being examined and
what are its component issues?
2. Literature search -- finding materials relevant to the subject being
explored.
3. Data evaluation -- determining which literature makes a signifi-
cant contribution to the understanding of the topic.
4. Analysis and interpretation -- discussing the findings and conclu-
sions of pertinent literature.
Mani’s gesture was not so good after this…and he contin-
ued…
Mani: ok.. ok… enough… Alexa.. Now tell me How
to do data analysis
Alexa: (in a irrigated voice ..) “You have to follow
the following steps:”
1. Define Your Questions
2. Set Clear Measurement Priorities
Decide What To Measure
Decide How To Measure It
3. Collect Data
4. Analyse Data
5. Interpret Results
As you interpret the results of your data, ask yourself these
key questions:
Does the data answer your original question? How?
Does the data help you defend against any objections? How?
Are there any limitation on your conclusions, any angles you haven’t
considered?
Mani’s mind voice was loud enough miming “…this
stupid #*$* machine not giving anything what I want…
it just gives what it knows”
Mani: Alexa.. for God sake can you tell me “How to
write thesis?
Alexa: (continues in a dusky voice) “You have to follow the
following steps:”
Before Alexa starts.. Mani interfere in between and contin-
ues…
Mani: wait, wait…. Alexa can you please tell me how to get
the PhD without following any of your steps and also with-
out affecting my routine work, personal life and bank bal-
ance in just 2-3 years?
Alexa: (no response)
Mani: Alexa… Hello…
Alexa.. Alexa… are you there?
and Alexa…never come back…
Mani’s are everywhere...
There are Mani’s exist in each department, with the same
question “How to get a PhD”, of course there is an definite
answer for it, but no expected answers was ever given.
Alexa…. How to get a PhD?
