Gender Studies And Queer Theory In The Passion
Gender studies and Queer theory In The Passion, Henri is a French soldier from Napoleonic who
meets Villanelle, a Venetian woman when he goes to fight the Napoleonic wars in Russia. Villanelle
fell in love with the queen of shades as she calls her and she was heartbroken as they split. She
married another man who sold her two years later to the soldiers. She then met Henry who fell in
love with her. Henri killed Villanelle's husband when he appeared again in Venice out of jealousy
making him spend the rest of his life in prison. With time Villanelle became pregnant with Henri's
baby but refused to marry her . A gender study is a subject that majors on gender identity and their
representation in the categories analysis. It includes women, feminism, queer studies and men
studies. It closely relates to sexuality. Queer theory looks at the similarities between lesbians, gays,
and bisexuals. Gender studies and queer theory look at issues of sexuality, power, and marginalized
population. Feminism criticism influences much work in the gender studies and queer theory.
Gender studies and queer theory main primary concern is the manner in which gender and sexuality
are discussed. Gender roles can be linked to expectations of males and females outside their
families. Men and women are often expected to perform a different kind of task and also occupy
different types of job functions. Henri was expected by the Napoleonic emperor to cook the best

What I Learned in the Women and Gender Studies Class
I have a very vivid memory of discussing my classes to my mother before this first semester began,
and whenever I listed off my Women and Gender Studies class I remember my mother asking me,
"What do you think you are going to learn about in there?" I recall opening my mouth to say
something, but nothing came out. I stopped, and looked at her and said, "You know, I'm not really
sure. I guess we will find out!" I knew going in to this class I was excited, but for what I had no
clue. However, looking back on my experiences, discussions, and the knowledge I have gained from
this course, I know exactly why I was excited. There is an entire world out there that the media and
politics had hidden from me, but now my eyes are opened. I can ... Show more content on

The day I was hired a guy named Justin was also hired; he was manager within two months. Three
months after I was hired a guy named Tommy was hired; he was a manager within a month. I
worked there six months and never even got a single cent raise. I remember talking about becoming
a manager with our store owner (also a man) and he said, "I promote people to managers who have
mastered all parts of the store, and who are good leaders." The guy Justin that I previously
mentioned, couldn't even make a pizza. Women were not hired or promoted into positions that
required enforcement and leadership, and this happening everywhere! Women can see that
promotion, they can almost taste it, but somehow the man always gets it. One of my favorite
assignments throughout the course was the midterm. I absolutely loved the documentary Half the
Sky specifically because it truly opened your eyes to so many transnational issues. Issues that were
not isolated to a specific village or city, but problems that were worldwide. The hardest part of the
documentary for me to watch personally was the sections discussing human trafficking. China,
Cambodia, and Syria are just some of the countries where sex/human trafficking is a predominant
issue. People – typically women – are kidnapped, or sold by their families and then sold to brothels
to work as prostitutes. Other forms of human

Reflection On Gender Studies
Prior to this class the term gender to me was associated with male and female, that they grow up
into the image the caretaker wants, and then the replica is cut lose to stand on their own. However,
after class discussions the term Gender studies has taken on a life of its own. It is an
interdisciplinary study devoted to gender identity and gender representation of society. It looks at
inequality amongst men and women in both the public and their private spheres. Now as I look back
upon my childhood when I had to remain indoor to cook, clean, wash, and iron I can identify how I
was gender role socialize base on my sex as female. Although, at that time I did not see it as
socialization, to me it was unfair and unjust, because I always taught my brother got the easiest and
coolest chores. Even though he use to complain about his chore he never use to envy what I did. It

This is relevant in a variety of realms, such as social organizations and institutions, interpersonal
relationships, and understandings of identity and sexuality (Malti–Douglas, 2007) It is a discipline
created originally by activists,(Chafetz, 1999 )and those who study it today see it as their mission to
identify, analyze, and correct social inequities both locally and globally (Malti–Douglas, 2007).
Gender Studies explores power as it relates to gender and other forms of identity, including
sexuality, race, class, religion, and nationality. It also encompasses interdisciplinary fields, which
include exploration of the histories and experiences of diverse women and men as well as studies of
sexualities, masculinities, femininities, and gender systems in society. [61] It also analyzes how
gender plays out in politics, intimate life, culture, the workplace, athletics, technology, health,
science, and in the very production of knowledge

This also could be related to the participation of the United States in various wars over the last 80
years, where the participation the man is needed. Creating the female LFPR increase and Male

2) Employers should keep moving with the gender gap during the current recession, because a
company can't stop working because there's a crisis. They must find a solution to the problem. As
the attached article says "the current recession has had a more adverse effect on men than women."
Women are have had more employment stability than men during recessions.

Research Study on Gender Bias in Education
Gender Biases in Education: Math
Nicole S. Tester
Bryant University
Abstract This research project conducted was to find out whether women were more affected by
gender based expectations than men. This was done by giving both young men and young women a
simple standardized math test which most likely they had all been taught and exposed to in the past.
This particular test was designed to be at or below the performance level of most college students.
There was two versions of the test instructions, with one version providing information about men
typically outperforming women on the test, and the other version stating the opposite. These
instructions were used as a form of deception to prove my hypothesis. My ... Show more content on

There are clubs devoted to women's sexuality, success, and even fashion senses. There are awards
given to women who have gotten superior grades, been offered great jobs, or are simply a success.
Knowing this, what I want to learn is whether these women who are so highly praised and allowed
the same success as men are still subjects to gender based expectations, more specifically in learning
and education. In my study I will be deceiving the participants into thinking that only women will
be successful in this study or to another group I will be saying only men will be successful. The way
this will be done is by using simple high school level math tests. Before the test I will be falsely
informing half of my participants (equal number of females and males) that only men will pass this
test, and then I will repeat this with the other half of my participants but falsely informing them of
the opposite. The fact that I will play on women's vulnerability will allow me to learn whether these
very empowered and successful women will still be so after being told they will fail before even
trying. My hypothesis is that these women will be affected by such a statistic and depending on the
false statistic they get, they will fulfill it. Methods

Gender Studies Class Analysis
Before this class began, if you had asked me with what gender I identified, I would have told you
"female". However, before this class, I had never paid attention to the actions of others and the ideas
of society that would label me as a girl. After beginning this class, I have begun to notice these
actions and ideas. Our gender can influence many of the aspects of our life. These influences
include but are not limited to things such as social norms and gender roles. But shall we allow these
influences to fully decide how we are to act? While I use some of the things that social norms and
gender roles explain to help me decide how to act and what to do in life, I refuse to hamper what
they will allow me to do with my life. When most people are little, they have some experience that
leads them to the realization that they are either a boy, girl, or person of another gender. It could be

I do. Gender roles have always been part of society. Generally, we have expectations as a society of
how people should act based on their gender. My second experience occurs in high school. By the
time I was a senior in high school, I had been in a serious relationship for about 2 years. We were
even talking about getting married. He lives with his dad and his brother so there are no females
living in his house. Every time I would go over there it would be messy. So, I started to realize that
when I would go over to his house, I would start cleaning. I would pick up things lying around, do
the dishes, and even do his laundry. I would do all the housework that needed to be done because I
had been conditioned by the idea of gender roles that I should do the housework since I was the only
girl that went into that house and the girl should always be the one to do the

A Study on Gender-Based Violence
ABSTRACT
Despite women are of higher status socially in many countries than before, it is found that domestic
violence against women is still a universal problem. This paper will explore the phenomenon
gender–based violence in Hong Kong as compared to the global situation.
An extensive literature review was conducted to explore the existing theories and risk factors
associated with domestic violence. A qualitative study of women victims was then undertaken to
gain further insight on the current gender–based violence situation in Hong Kong. In the discussion,
the limitations of the study were examined and the results were compared of with literature findings.

Being female is the risk factor by itself. Though not exclusively, most of the violence against
women takes place within families and the perpetrator are almost exclusively men, usually intimate
to the woman.
Local Phenomenon of Gender–based Violence
An increasing number of domestic violence incidents is associated with the rapid demographic,
social, and economic changes in Hong Kong. The number of newly reported battered spouse cases
increased more than double fold from 3,371 in 2004 to 6,843 in 2008, with 81.5% of victims being
female (Social Welfare Department 2004, 2008). This represents only the iceberg because it is
estimated that a large proportion of victims choose to keep silence. The problem attracted public
attention on 11th April, 2004 when a man committed suicide after killing her daughters and wife at
Tin Shu Wai. Before the tragedy occurred, the wife had reported being battered by her husband to
the Social Welfare Department repeatedly. The case has alerted the Government to announce 'zero
tolerance' policy on domestic violence.
According to a survey conducted by Chan Ko Ling (2000), 50.5% of the battered women endured
the situation for as long as six years. This reflects a high degree of tolerance over the problem by
women. In another study on 1,695 victims presented with intimate partner violence to the

person might choose to communicate or not to communicate. Several situation examples included,
"Present a talk to a group of friends" and "Talk in a small group of acquaintances". Participants were
asked to rank each situation from 1 meaning "never" to 5 meaning "always". The reliability score
for this scale ranged from .85 to well above .90. This is a very high score which means the scale
should be very helpful in our research.
James McCroskey developed the Tolerance for Disagreement Scale in 1998. (Teven, J. J.,

Gender Studies Class Analysis
Coming in to this class I didn't know half the things I know now about gender studies and social
justice for women. I knew the basic topic in gender studies but couldn't go into depth if asked.
Taking this allowed me to gain an insight on different topics that go on in the world dealing with
women's and men's social justice rights. I was able to learn how women lack equal rights. This
course taught me to think historically on issues surrounding women and equal rights. Since I am a
female, I can think historically and put myself in other women shoes and attempt gain the
perspective of what women faced in the early 1900's to the late 2000's. The goals of gender studies
and feminism in the 21 century were to make it known that girls are a part of the world too. Women
since the early 1900's face gender inequalities; whether it's in the work place, or in societal aspect.
The goal of gender studies is to acknowledge how women were treated in early history of American
civilization and how it correlates in today society. However being that that was the main point that

Gender Diversity Case Study
Introduction
Diversity can be defined as the differences among the people working in the same workplace. Those
differences can be related to gender, race, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, culture or
personalities.
Managing diversity within organisation is about 'recognising this range of differences in people and
valuing people as individuals, respecting their differences and their differing needs. It is also about
accommodating differences wherever possible so that an individual can play a full part in the
working environment' (Daniels and Macdonald, 2005)

Sex And The Practice Of The Field Of Gender Study
In How to Build a Man, Fausto–Sterling questions the neutrality of scientific works through
examinations of scientific interpretations of sex and the practice of sex assignment at birth. Based
on evidence and conducted by educated scientists, science is usually seen as truth and authority.
However, interpreted by human beings with preconceptions, science, far from telling the truth and
liberating people from old social understandings, actively interacts with current social values and
reinforces the norms. In the perspective of gender study, a person's assigned sex is often seen as a
stable biological identity as opposed to gender as a personal identification. Fausto–Sterling puts into
question the certainty of assigned sex and implies that understanding sex as socially constructed is
essential for change. However, how is this new understanding of science indicative of its role in the
field of gender study?
Scientific interpretations interact with social norms and values in two primary ways. First, while it is
clear that the chromosomal sex is either XX or XY and the specific genes on the X or Y
chromosome lead to the secretion of different types and amount of hormones, the following steps of
sex/gender development are much more ambiguous and involves great variations. When evidence or
observations are imperfect, however, scientists often attribute the consequence entirely to hormonal
or genetic explanations, ignoring the intermediate steps where socialization can play an

Gender Differences In Ethnographic Study
There is a belief that woman remember places such as landmarks/pictures while men use maps
without the need for pictures and this is still believed in today's society. A newspaper article by
Revill J. (1999), mentioned that women lack the spatial skill needed to read a map. There have been
many studies related to this topic, such the kind of strategy each gender use to remember maps, is it
the nature that men possess the skills needed to read maps or is each gender nurtured to have such
difference? And if visual–spatial memory is related to remembering maps. This study can help us

From the three articles above we know that visual–spatial memory is needed for reading maps and
gender differences plays a role in spatial skill. Having experience in traveling does not make a
person a better map reader. The hypotheses I would like to test is map reading is unrelated to gender
but each person's interest. To test my hypotheses, I will be using a between–subject design.
Recruitments will be first year UIC undergrads that are still not familiar with the UIC buildings, 20
males and 20 females are needed. The location will be the UIC–BSB building because of its
complex structure. Participants will be split in two group; each group will have 10 males and 10
females' participants in even dispute of gender in each group. One group will receive a
picture/landmark only map of BSB and audio instructions on where they need to go. The other
group will have a text/spatial only map of BSB and audio instructions on where they need to go.
The only tasks the students need to do is to travel from Harrison Street door of the BSB building to
the 2nd floor BSB Psychology Computer Lab as fast as they can. The procedure will start with each
participant picking a suitable time and date they are free. The participants will meet a person in the
Harrison Street door of BSB that will hand them their picture or text map with audio directions.
After giving the material to the participant, they will have 3 minutes to study the map, without
audio. The person with the participant will signal and record the starting time the participant and
when the participants reach the destination, another person will be in the room recording the time
the participant arrived. Gender, time, and which kind of map they used will be recorded and

A lot can be learned about rhetoric by looking at these two articles: "5 Charts That Show Sexism Is
Still Alive and Well in Gaming" and "The Integrity of Women and Gender Studies". One portrays
the gaming community as sexist and underrepresenting women (Kleeman) while the other
condemns modern feminism for treating women as victims and "vilifying" men (Frohlich). The first
uses many logical arguments that are used to bring emotion to the reader, and make them feel like
certain things are ethically wrong (Kleeman). The second uses a slightly different technique, since it
is explicitly an opinion piece (Frohlich). It leads the author to be trusted by the reader, and then
presents the author's opinions that are backed by logical arguments (Frohlich). It also causes the
reader to experience emotional and ethical feelings (Frohlich). 5 Charts That Show Sexism Is Still

Gender Inequality In Law School Case Study
In this paper, I focus on women's experiences in law school and law firms, and how these two
institutions impact the role of gender within the professional partner track. I examine whether this
disparity in the legal profession is just a reflection of society's views on gender or if this disparity is
caused by the structure of law school classes or law firms and what could aide this inequality. As a
female student with an interest in becoming a lawyer it is important to address and fix the strong
gender inequality within the legal profession. In order to analyze this topic, I related the experiences
of a female partner to research on the ranking of law schools, the hemisphere of law firms, and
discrimination within these two areas.

Like subsections of the conservative right in Southworth's books, Lawyer X agrees that the role of
lawyers should be to serve their client's needs and supports the idea the lawyers are supposed to

world of law. Although family law is gendered, I wanted to analyze how deeply gendered the legal
profession is and whether the law school attended or law firm practice plays a role in this disparity.
To do this I will apply Lawyer X's experiences to research on women in the legal profession, women
owned law firms and discrimination within these two areas. Studies like Sterling and Reichman's
(2016) show us that women are significantly underrepresented in partnership and ownership within
the legal profession (Sterling & Reichman, 2016). The growth of women owned law firms will
hopefully aid the disproportion of the genders within the legal profession. Lawyer X hopes that the
formation of women owned law firms will in fact "be a trend, instead of an aberration, because it is
important for women to be represented in the legal profession" (Lawyer X, 24 May 2017). This
growth of female owned law firms has even seeped into the corporate hemisphere, with firms like

Causes Of Sexual Harassment In Egypt
Documentaries concerning sexual harassment in Egypt are getting more serious each day. The
problem is age–old, however not till lately the government and the media started taking actions
against this striking crime. Sexual harassment is present in every society around the world, in every
place in Egypt – and it cost women an immeasurable damage emotionally and physically. It
terrorizes women holding them back from their lives, work and duties, forcing them to measure the
value of opportunities against the risk to their safety. The way sexual harassment has created fear in
every basic life demand, women always trying to find a more secure path in their lives by avoiding
sexual harassment, which sometimes manipulate their actions and decisions.
The largest majorities face sexual harassment in Egypt, it is a vital problem and studies showed that
almost every woman in Egypt had been subjected to it. This problem is notable and can occur in
many ways or forms. Not only sexual harassment is constricted to offense – inappropriate act
against victims' will –, but it is any violence that can occur to a woman in any platform or by
anyway. Types of violence on women are various, however they can all be placed under two
headings: physical sexual harassment and verbal sexual harassment. Nevertheless, The Egyptian
Criminal Code has divided crimes of sexual violence against women into two categories a category
which contains sexual harassment, and the other category which contains FGM,

Equal Rights For Women And Women's Rights
We're in the 21st century and still women are being harassed, are not receiving equal pay, same
leadership opportunities, treatment in the workplace, and other equal rights that women should have.
We've been through many movements including the Women's Suffrage March in 2017, which was a
peaceful protest in which both women and men came out to support each other after the election,
and protested about their personal rights as women. We haven't progressed much except for more
people speaking up about this. It's basically mild segregation based on gender. Recently, some
women have created a campaign #MeToo, where women started posting about men treating them
unfairly. Eventually, more women started calling men out, and more men are losing their chances
for a political position. One of the significant #MeToo political incidents includes Ray Moore,
Republican Candidate for Senate, being stood up by many women about sexual harassment. More
women are basically saying, "We've had it." The reason? Well, women are just fed up with how
they're being treated. Pretty simple as that. Anne McElhaney, a 8th grader at Swanson Middle
School, talks about her views and experience with the women's rights movements, including the
most recent women's march. "I heard about the women's march, and saw it all over the news. I
wasn't able to go to it, but I thought that it was amazing that so many women had come together in a

your interpersonal interactions, your face communicates many things, especially your emotions.
(Devito, 125) Women are stereotyped in today's society as to being more emotional than men in
emotional settings. Not in all instances is this true, however, men feel they need to set a strong,
domineering, display of their emotions and the way they react towards certain emotional situations.

Women During Combat War : American Society Changed And...
Women in Combat Arms American Society has changed and evolved at a record pace over the past
decade. Technology, social media, sexual orientation, and race relations have all been hotly debated
topics. On January 24, 2013, when then–Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta rescinded the rule that
restricted women from serving in combat units and directed the Armed Services to review their
occupational standards and assignment policies, the discussion of women in Combat Arms was
thrust into the limelight. The debate on whether to allow women in direct combat roles is an
emotional topic for most and it appears the latest policy change could very well be a mistake. The
Combat Exclusion Policy dates back to 1948 when The Women 's Armed Services Integration Act of
1948 excluded women from combat positions. On April 28, 1993, combat exclusion was lifted from
aviation positions by Secretary of Defense Les Aspin, permitting women to serve in most aviation
units. Other restrictions were maintained on aviation units in direct support of ground units and
special operations aviation units. In 1994, the Pentagon declared that Service members are eligible
to be assigned to all positions for which they are qualified, except that women shall be excluded
from assignment to units below the brigade level whose primary mission is to engage in direct
combat on the ground.[1] This includes assignments to the Infantry, Special Forces and Armor. The
policy also excluded women being assigned to

The Military : The Role Of Women In The Military
Some say women cannot accurately shoot a gun or that they are not built for combat because of their
low stamina and strength, or that they are not worth investing in because of all the time they spend
training and teaching females to be as good as their male companions. The role of women in society
are changing. Throughout history women have been helping the military through sending care
packages to the front lines or by volunteering to train as nurses. Then when education became
available for women, the increase in women proving themselves useful increased. They started
becoming scientists, engineers, pilots, and strategists, but they have never been allowed to fight.
However, recently women have proven that the advantages of having women in combat are more
beneficial to the war front than the disadvantages. The military should recruit more woman for the
military because women have shown the same determination and devotion to serving their country
as their male counterparts, they have contributed enormously by providing necessary information
that ultimately helps the war effort. They are just as reliable and train just as well as men. Lastly,
women have not been proven to be weaker than men and in many cases, have been as successful as
any other soldier. This brings up the question, should women be allowed to fight on the front lines?

Rape And Sexual Assault Of The Military
Rape and sexual assault are major issues in the military. The purpose of this essay is to discuss the
issue of rape and sexual assault in the military. The number of attacks for rape and sexual assault in
the military are at an all–time high. Women have recently been allowed to fight on the front line.
While this may be a huge achievement for women–kind, for this woman, it is a very scary thought. I
am a women with female relatives, with female friends. I may be forced to join the military one day
if a war breaks out and women are needed to protect the country. I would be happy to serve my
country if I did not have to be scared of my fellow soldiers. Joining the military is a commitment
sold as a beneficial lifestyle. However, there is an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout this paper, I will also discuss the movie, The Invisible War, speak specific about certain
branches in the military as well as share personal stories. Hear the stories of women at war while in
war. To start off I will like to state my reasoning in picking this topic. My sister is seventeen years
old, graduating high school in this upcoming June. She has made the decision of not going to
college right away but instead enlisting in the military, the Navy to be exact. My family has stood by
her decision, but me being the overprotected sister, I sat her down to discuss her choices. Her main
reasons for choosing to enlist are 1) in memory of our grandfather, 2) it will help her pay for
college, when she goes and 3) she feels she is not disciplined enough to be able to "make it through
college". When asked about her knowledge of the military, she knew close to nothing. I mentioned
to her the statics about being sexually assaulted in the field and while shocked by the information
she still chooses to enlist. Yes, joining the military can be beneficial but where is the separation
between my sister's and all women's safety and the love of fighting for our country. Currently there
are many women who are serving to their country in all aspects of the Armed Forces of the United
States. Since the war in Iraq and Afghanistan more women

Research Study on Gender Differences
Non–verbal communication is defined as communication without words. (Devito, 116) Throughout
your interpersonal interactions, your face communicates many things, especially your emotions.
(Devito, 125) Women are stereotyped in today's society as to being more emotional than men in
emotional settings. Not in all instances is this true, however, men feel they need to set a strong,
domineering, display of their emotions and the way they react towards certain emotional situations.
Gender display rules are a set of rules that usually either male or female follow in order to fit their
specific gender script in society. It is stated in the textbook that women talk more about feelings and
emotions and use communication for emotional expression ... Show more content on

The results of the participants' ratings presented that there was no difference between females and
males on the way they rated the unpleasantness of the stimuli. The study proved that females show a
larger amount of facial muscle reaction than males to fear–relevant situations, however, there was
no difference between the genders with the ratings of unpleasantness. The results of this study prove
that females are more facially reactive than males. However, this study does not prove the second
hypothesis, which states that females are more emotional in general. (Thunberg &Dimberg) Part two
of the textbook teaches about messages, which are spoken and unspoken. It covers in depth about
non–verbal communication and non–verbal messages. The article I chose to summarize falls into a
few different categories which the book emphasizes on. There is a lot of information about how
females and males are supposed to act in society, which falls under the term Gender display rules.
Due to the fact this research article is about differences in facial reactions between male and
females, it falls under two main categories of part two of the textbook, which include facial
messages, and gender display rules. There are also other aspects that this article can relate to the
textbook material such as: Non–verbal messages, gender stereotypes, non–verbal communication,

Essay on Gender Studies in Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights
Gender Studies in Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights
Gender played an important role in the style of writing known as "Gothic". Traditional stereotypes
were often broken. Men were not always portrayed as dominant, strong, rational or masculine.
Likewise, women were not always portrayed as weak, submissive, irrational, or feminine. This
essay will take a look at the relationship between Catherine and Edgar Linton in Emily Brönte's
Wuthering Heights. We will take a look at how their characters are portrayed, how this affected their
marriage, and how each character retained some of the traits attributed to their gender.
Catherine's character will be examined first, since she is one of the main characters in the book.

On our first glimpse of Edgar, we see him and his sister, Isabella, crying over some ridiculous issue.
Ellen describes him as a mama's boy and a wimp, but he is also quite frank, as we see on page 45
when he buts in on someone else's conversation. To get to the point, Edgar was a very sensitive,
emotional, frail child, not at all portrayed as masculine.
After Catherine and Edgar meet, it is obvious they will be married. One incident in particular
seemed to set the tone of their marriage. On page 55, we see an example of Catherine's horrible
temper and how it manifested itself through physical violence. Edgar, shocked at seeing "his idol"
(p.55) commit such a deed, became very emotional and decided to leave. As we all know, he did not
get very far before he came back.
In this scene, Catherine became physically dominant, as shown by her use of force on everyone
around her. Her use of manipulation to get Edgar back showed a very rational and intelligent mind
at work, but the fact that she truly cried over the situation shows emotion, even if it was
embarrassment. While Edgar was emotional during this scene, he was determined to leave, at first.
He ultimately proved to be submissive by coming back and giving in to her.
Catherine and Edgar's relationship mirrored the future relationship between Heathcliff and Isabella.
Catherine was no longer physically abusive to Edgar, but emotionally and mentally abusive. We see
a glimpse of this when she blackmailed

Feminism, Gender, And Gender Studies
Everyone defines masculinity in a different way. Growing up masculinity was only a term for men
who brought an income to the home, otherwise known as the breadwinners. However, this was the
typical stereotype which men were obligated to live up too. As time is passing the term masculinity
is changing and instead of defining males and females separately, it is changing into a common
definition of gender. Meaning no matter if you are female or male, gender will be known as a
definition for both and there will be no separation.
Men and masculinities also called men studies, which was a critique to the rising men's rights
movement. It is a sub study of gender studies which gave the definition to masculinities by R.W.
Connell.*** A lot of people believe feminism is what put gender in the mainstream. Years in the
past we always saw men as leaders to led international relations but as times are changing females
are getting in power. We tend to stereotype and automatically think this image of a man is the higher
authority who is masculine and the aggressor. Women we see as like content, shy and as a victim. As
times changed we saw women stand up for their rights and achieve that so–called masculine role.
Feminists as always asked for equal gender rights but this raises the question about men getting
equal rights as well. Men deserve equal rights like women so as a society we need to move away
from the typical stereotype's of men and just focus on the whole of a gender.

Ethnographic Paper: Differences in Study Habits by Gender at King Library
A library, by definition, is "a place set apart to contain books, periodicals, and other material for
reading, viewing, listening, study, or reference, as a room, set of rooms, or building where books
may be read or borrowed" (Merriam–Webster). However, for students at Miami University, the word
"library" may have different connotations. After asking several fellow students the first word that
comes to mind when someone talks about the library, the responses I received varied from the
expected "books", "study", and "focus", to more personal emotions such as "sad" and "depressed".
King Library, named for longtime library director and benefactor Edgar Weld King, has been the
largest library and main scholarly hub at Miami University since 1966. Open 24 hours a day, you are
bound to see students studying, socializing, or even sleeping at any given hour of the day in King.
Comprised of four floors, including the basement, students are expected to meet the noise level
expectations of each floor; students should anticipate a more relaxed and loud experience in the
basement whereas the third floor maintains a level of almost absolute silence. For the past several
weeks, I have been observing students and their studying habits in the basement and café area of
King Library. In particular, I have been interested in how the gender of the student has an

Introduction
This write–up presents the classroom interaction with reference to gender and different types of
behaviour with boys and girls on the basis of gender are discussed. As we know that in classroom
many times girls have to face some kind of problems. Even in the same school, in the same
classroom and reading same text–books boys and girls get very different knowledge. This
discussion also talks about the effects of gender bias in the classroom on our society. This problem
of gender bias in the classroom, particularly in terms of differential treatment, has been commonly
debated in academic and popular literature for decades.
GENDER AND CLASSROOM
The classroom is a platform where a child learns not only the academics but also how to behave
with others. Undoubtedly school has a very important role in anyone's life but apart from that if we
analyse from the gender perspective, they nourish the gender stereotypes also.
"Do schools and colleges really eternalize behavioural differences between boys and girls on the
basis of gender? Do classroom interactions reflect the gender divisions prevailed in our Indian
society and more than that does it also assist to their continuation? "

What Is The Importance Of Gender And Sexuality In African...
In African American studies, the scholarship of gender and sexuality is largely based in the
intellectual tradition that grew out of the civil rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s. With a
discourse that historically examines the behaviors, conditions, and attitudes that foster stereotypes of
social roles based on class oppression, sex, and gender identity as social constructs found to be
inextricably bound together, the inclusion of gender and sexuality in African American studies
reaches back to include the work of such diverse social and cultural activists as Anna Julia Cooper,
Ida B. Wells, and Sojourner Truth. Working to situate the rights of all black people in a place of
woman–inclusive equality, the scholarship moves forward through the work of activist intellectuals
that include Elise Johnson McDougald, and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, who urged political
action for black women as a form of physical and political protection. Moving forward, the fight for
academic inclusion of African American studies broadened the examination of race, gender, and
sexuality beyond the feminism that writer Alice Walker suggests emphasizes women's natural
contribution to society (Walker, 2005).

The year is 2016. You can pay your bills electronically, ride a jet powered hoverboard, and cars can

called 'The Simple Truth about the Gender Pay Gap', which showed when men and women attend
the same kind of college, pick the same major and accept the same kind of job, on average, the
woman will still earn 82 cents to every dollar that a man earns. (aauw, 2016) This form of inequality

women who make the same educational and occupational choices that men make do not typically

this point in our modern–day society almost unavoidable. This is for our daughters, and our

Academic Study Around Film And Gender Essay
Academic study around film and gender tends to divide into two paradigms: positive postfeminist
and negative feminist analyses. Mulvey (1975) propositioned the Male gaze theory, whereby the
majority of films are made for male viewers, in which women are situated as passive objects for
male visual consumption. Brooks (1997) argues this is still the case in mass culture and the arts,
where women are objectified as sexual objects, which exposes society to negative role models.
Postfeminist theory (Hermes 1995, Geraghty 1991) and in particular, within the study of popular
culture, argues that the interpretation of cultural texts varies person to person, and consumers
understand most texts to be fictitious and are used as tools of escapism from everyday life.
This proposed research is situated between the paradigm of feminist content analysis and the film
industry audience statistics. Through the synthesis of two approaches it will attempt to address a
deficit in existing research in understanding widespread responses and generalised attitudes towards
gender representation in film. To investigate reactions to only one or two texts is insufficient
because each film does not exist in isolation and society is saturated in popular culture which users
select from across types and genres. Methodology
This research will attempt to quantify the opinion and responses of women in response to gender
representation of women in cinema films. This will be done through operationalising the

In Spite of Women – Esquire Magazine and the construction of Male Consumer
Rhetorical Analysis One
During early thirties and forties which was right after the depression, government and corporate felt
the necessity to revive the market. At that time, people thought women were the ones with
dominating consumption powers. As Kenon Breazeale quoted in his article, "Women are indeed the
shoppers of the world." (Breazeale, 231). However, some people such as those in journalism
fraternity regarded women's buying power as "gullible vulnerability to consumerism's trashy
faddishness" (Breazeale, 232). Those people spread wide hostility toward women's taste and argued
that men should be the ones with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Breazeale here showed how Esquire trashed women's taste in food and at the same time implied that
male was much better in enjoying good food.
By quoting several similar examples about home décor and drink, Breazeale pointed out that all
those articles weren't written in any occasional incidents. By contrast, Esquire was knitting similar
misogynistic threads for years to conceptualize people about the gender related meanings of good
and bad taste. Food such as steaks and fowl, home décor with clean and functional features and
alcohol were considered as good and related with masculinity. On the other hand, ornamentation,
carrot teensie–weenesies and anti–alcohol were perceived as bad and femininity. As a summary of
the function of text, Breazeale concluded that all Esquire did were trying to recuperate a female–
identified role for men which need arguing against traditional gender related social roles. Yet at the
same time, Esquire conveyed the message that any attempts of changing the traditional modes of
patriarchal rules was not allowed. So it was necessary to emphasize the privilege that male had over
female. This job was accomplished by the other function of the magazine – illustrations.
Breazeale argued that by showing erotic spectacles

The Problems of Sociolinguistic Studies of Gender Differences
Introduction
It has long been assumed that women and men differ in their use of language. These differences are
supposed to represent (and perpetuate) the social divisions between women and men. Few
researchers will disagree that women and men's speech styles are different, though they may
disagree as to what extent or as to what these differences may mean.
Expecting to find such differences, I began a study of a two–hour conversation with my family. But
in the course of attempting to transcribe my family's conversations and in reviewing the current
research, I encountered many difficulties. Nearly every article I read seemed to contradict the

In her study, she found that use of more Standard English forms by the women in the community
reflected their different job opportunities. The women mainly worked in white–collar jobs, such as
teaching, where education and an understanding of Standard English were necessary. They also
tended to have jobs that isolated them from members of their home speech community. The men in
Nichols' study, however, worked in higher–paying, blue–collar jobs with co–workers who were
mainly from their home speech community. Nichols' position is that, because of this discrepancy,
the women were more motivated to use Standard English than the men were (Nichols 1983).
Assuming that differences between women and men are due to the fact of their gender is a perfect
example of what Aries calls the "fundamental attribution error." The "fundamental attribution error"
refers to a tendency to attribute a person's behavior to some aspect of that person (e.g. gender),
without considering the social context (Aries 1997: 92). In the example above, Nichols illustrates
how opportunity and motivation can shape linguistic behavior. Of course, gender probably had an
effect on the type of job opportunities available, but had only an indirect effect on linguistic
behavior.

profession in which I, as a Thai woman, can gain respect and appreciation of people in my culture

broad area of gender stereotypes in management, and I would be excited to pursue my research

In addition to my interest in gender stereotyping and discrimination, I am also interested in the area
of positive work relationships. My previous research experience has examined the relationship
between personality and performance in medical settings. Working on this project has peaked my
interest in the concept of core self evaluations, and how it can be related to issues of gender
stereotyping and women's role in workplace. Specifically, I had recently started thinking of core
self–evaluations as a potential mediating mechanism between gender stereotyping and job
performance. For instance, women that are being stereotyped against may develop negative core self
evaluations, and in turn – poorer levels of job performance.
In the last two years, I have engaged in several psychology research projects and work experiences.

Bette Davis once said, "When a man gives his opinion he's a man, but when a woman gives her
opinion she's a bitch". In the book, A doll's House by Henrick Ibsen the play is set in the early 19th
century and explores individual liberty and gender equality at that time. Ibsen effectively brings out
the issue of gender inequality in society and marriages. In this book Nora and Torvald are husband

My New Perception Of The World And Gender Studies Class Essay
The first time that I ever took a woman's and gender studies class was this semester, and before
taking the course all information regarding gender, class, sex, language, identity, exile, agency,
power, and race was based on personal experience. I have never formally learned about the proper
terminologies that define the systems of oppression that I experienced in my everyday life. I feel
that this information was vital to me because now that I can properly identify these problems I have
the tools necessary to fix them. I also learned that may of those themes are universal and the way
that women in particular suffer is the same across various cultures. Considering the theories, novels
lectures, class discussions, and presentations I can say that I am walking away from this class with
an ample amount of critical information. Most importantly are the themes that contributed to my
new perception of the world and the role that I play in it. I have learned that gender and sex,
contrary to popular belief, are not synonymous terms. This is important because society has a set of
sex and gender roles that society says people are supposed to follow. While one is not given the
opportunity to choose their sex, they are given the opportunity to choose what gender and
behavioral expectations they uphold. This in turn means that gender is not assigned at birth; it is
culturally mandated and therefore allows for change. Additionally, one of the most important terms
that I learned in this

Gender Studies And Queer Theory In Movies
The videos presented talk about three different movies, Halloween, Frozen, and 300. The videos use
the gender studies and queer theory to criticize the movies. I believe that gender studies and queer
theory was used because the videos focus on the genders used in the movies. Also another approach
that was used was the feminist criticism.
According to The Norton Introduction to Literature, gender studies "turned to interpretation of the
text in ideological context regardless of the sex or intention of the author." (Mays,1989) In the
honest trailer for the movie 300, the video focuses on the movie having nothing but men on it. The
review basically focuses on how men were portrayed as having to be muscular and very fit.
Throughout the majority of the movie it is also nothing but males, fighting against each other in war.
Which is the "normal" thing to see, because if it was girls fighting it would be an unusual scene. The
video also uses phrases that can be seen as the author trying to hide his real sexuality, which is what
gender studies is also a part of. It is stated in The Norton Introduction to Literature that ... Show

Frozen neither of them fall in love with a prince, rather only one of the princesses falls in love with

My Reflection On Womens And Gender Studies
Before taking this class, I did not know a lot about women's and gender studies. Reading the
different books and looking at the different pieces of art helped me the most in this class. There
were many pieces in this class that influenced me to learn more about these women's and gender
issues and reflect on my learning. I spent a lot of time taking notes while reading the stories and
relating them to what I have experienced in my life. For example, the graphic memoir we did as a
project showed how I related to women's and gender issues. It showed my struggle as I played T–
ball as the only girl on the team. This experience allowed me to compare it to the stories we read as
part of the class. One of my favorite books we read in class was Fun Home written by Alison
Bechdel. This was one of my favorites because of her writing style and the way she showed her
women's and gender issues. She uses a lot of detail as she writes which is one thing I like about her
writing style. Another thing I like about her writing style is the way she describes the issues that she
has encountered. For example, she uses the pictures to help the reader better understand how she has
struggled. I find that this helps me better understand the plot of the story. This story has greatly
changed how I feel about women's and gender issues. Before reading this story, I did not realize
how many issues women suffer from regarding who they are. Bechdel shows her struggle with her
father and being a lesbian.

Gender Studies And Queer Theory In The Passion

  • 1. Gender Studies And Queer Theory In The Passion Gender studies and Queer theory In The Passion, Henri is a French soldier from Napoleonic who meets Villanelle, a Venetian woman when he goes to fight the Napoleonic wars in Russia. Villanelle fell in love with the queen of shades as she calls her and she was heartbroken as they split. She married another man who sold her two years later to the soldiers. She then met Henry who fell in love with her. Henri killed Villanelle's husband when he appeared again in Venice out of jealousy making him spend the rest of his life in prison. With time Villanelle became pregnant with Henri's baby but refused to marry her . A gender study is a subject that majors on gender identity and their representation in the categories analysis. It includes women, feminism, queer studies and men studies. It closely relates to sexuality. Queer theory looks at the similarities between lesbians, gays, and bisexuals. Gender studies and queer theory look at issues of sexuality, power, and marginalized population. Feminism criticism influences much work in the gender studies and queer theory. Gender studies and queer theory main primary concern is the manner in which gender and sexuality are discussed. Gender roles can be linked to expectations of males and females outside their families. Men and women are often expected to perform a different kind of task and also occupy different types of job functions. Henri was expected by the Napoleonic emperor to cook the best ... • 2. What I Learned in the Women and Gender Studies Class I have a very vivid memory of discussing my classes to my mother before this first semester began, and whenever I listed off my Women and Gender Studies class I remember my mother asking me, "What do you think you are going to learn about in there?" I recall opening my mouth to say something, but nothing came out. I stopped, and looked at her and said, "You know, I'm not really sure. I guess we will find out!" I knew going in to this class I was excited, but for what I had no clue. However, looking back on my experiences, discussions, and the knowledge I have gained from this course, I know exactly why I was excited. There is an entire world out there that the media and politics had hidden from me, but now my eyes are opened. I can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The day I was hired a guy named Justin was also hired; he was manager within two months. Three months after I was hired a guy named Tommy was hired; he was a manager within a month. I worked there six months and never even got a single cent raise. I remember talking about becoming a manager with our store owner (also a man) and he said, "I promote people to managers who have mastered all parts of the store, and who are good leaders." The guy Justin that I previously mentioned, couldn't even make a pizza. Women were not hired or promoted into positions that required enforcement and leadership, and this happening everywhere! Women can see that promotion, they can almost taste it, but somehow the man always gets it. One of my favorite assignments throughout the course was the midterm. I absolutely loved the documentary Half the Sky specifically because it truly opened your eyes to so many transnational issues. Issues that were not isolated to a specific village or city, but problems that were worldwide. The hardest part of the documentary for me to watch personally was the sections discussing human trafficking. China, Cambodia, and Syria are just some of the countries where sex/human trafficking is a predominant issue. People – typically women – are kidnapped, or sold by their families and then sold to brothels to work as prostitutes. Other forms of human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Reflection On Gender Studies Prior to this class the term gender to me was associated with male and female, that they grow up into the image the caretaker wants, and then the replica is cut lose to stand on their own. However, after class discussions the term Gender studies has taken on a life of its own. It is an interdisciplinary study devoted to gender identity and gender representation of society. It looks at inequality amongst men and women in both the public and their private spheres. Now as I look back upon my childhood when I had to remain indoor to cook, clean, wash, and iron I can identify how I was gender role socialize base on my sex as female. Although, at that time I did not see it as socialization, to me it was unfair and unjust, because I always taught my brother got the easiest and coolest chores. This is relevant in a variety of realms, such as social organizations and institutions, interpersonal relationships, and understandings of identity and sexuality (Malti–Douglas, 2007) It is a discipline created originally by activists,(Chafetz, 1999 )and those who study it today see it as their mission to identify, analyze, and correct social inequities both locally and globally (Malti–Douglas, 2007). Gender Studies explores power as it relates to gender and other forms of identity, including sexuality, race, class, religion, and nationality. It also encompasses interdisciplinary fields, which include exploration of the histories and experiences of diverse women and men as well as studies of sexualities, masculinities, femininities, and gender systems in society. This also could be related to the participation of the United States in various wars over the last 80 years, where the participation the man is needed. Creating the female LFPR increase and Male LFPR decrease. 2) Employers should keep moving with the gender gap during the current recession, because a company can't stop working because there's a crisis. They must find a solution to the problem. As the attached article says "the current recession has had a more adverse effect on men than women." • 5. Research Study on Gender Bias in Education Gender Biases in Education: Math Nicole S. Tester Bryant University Abstract This research project conducted was to find out whether women were more affected by gender based expectations than men. This was done by giving both young men and young women a simple standardized math test which most likely they had all been taught and exposed to in the past. This particular test was designed to be at or below the performance level of most college students. There was two versions of the test instructions, with one version providing information about men typically outperforming women on the test, and the other version stating the opposite. These instructions were used as a form of deception to prove my hypothesis. My ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are clubs devoted to women's sexuality, success, and even fashion senses. There are awards given to women who have gotten superior grades, been offered great jobs, or are simply a success. Knowing this, what I want to learn is whether these women who are so highly praised and allowed the same success as men are still subjects to gender based expectations, more specifically in learning and education. In my study I will be deceiving the participants into thinking that only women will be successful in this study or to another group I will be saying only men will be successful. The way this will be done is by using simple high school level math tests. Before the test I will be falsely informing half of my participants (equal number of females and males) that only men will pass this test, and then I will repeat this with the other half of my participants but falsely informing them of the opposite. The fact that I will play on women's vulnerability will allow me to learn whether these very empowered and successful women will still be so after being told they will fail before even trying. My hypothesis is that these women will be affected by such a statistic and depending on the false statistic they get, they will fulfill it. Methods Participants Forty eight undergraduate volunteers (24 males and 24 females) from Bryant University took part in this study. The average age of participants was recorded at 20.22 years (SD=1.13). No cultural ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Gender Studies Class Analysis Before this class began, if you had asked me with what gender I identified, I would have told you "female". However, before this class, I had never paid attention to the actions of others and the ideas of society that would label me as a girl. After beginning this class, I have begun to notice these actions and ideas. Our gender can influence many of the aspects of our life. These influences include but are not limited to things such as social norms and gender roles. But shall we allow these influences to fully decide how we are to act? While I use some of the things that social norms and gender roles explain to help me decide how to act and what to do in life, I refuse to hamper what they will allow me to do with my life. When most people are little, they have some experience that leads them to the realization that they are either a boy, girl, or person of another gender. It could be anything from a self–discovery to an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I do. Gender roles have always been part of society. He lives with his dad and his brother so there are no females living in his house. Every time I would go over there it would be messy. So, I started to realize that when I would go over to his house, I would start cleaning. I would pick up things lying around, do the dishes, and even do his laundry. I would do all the housework that needed to be done because I had been conditioned by the idea of gender roles that I should do the housework since I was the only girl that went into that house and the girl should always be the one to do the ... • 7. A Study on Gender-Based Violence ABSTRACT Despite women are of higher status socially in many countries than before, it is found that domestic violence against women is still a universal problem. This paper will explore the phenomenon gender–based violence in Hong Kong as compared to the global situation. An extensive literature review was conducted to explore the existing theories and risk factors associated with domestic violence. A qualitative study of women victims was then undertaken to gain further insight on the current gender–based violence situation in Hong Kong. In the discussion, the limitations of the study were examined and the results were compared of with literature findings. A STUDY ON GENDER–BASED VIOLENCE IN HONG KONG ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Being female is the risk factor by itself. Though not exclusively, most of the violence against women takes place within families and the perpetrator are almost exclusively men, usually intimate to the woman. Local Phenomenon of Gender–based Violence An increasing number of domestic violence incidents is associated with the rapid demographic, social, and economic changes in Hong Kong. The number of newly reported battered spouse cases increased more than double fold from 3,371 in 2004 to 6,843 in 2008, with 81.5% of victims being female (Social Welfare Department 2004, 2008). This represents only the iceberg because it is estimated that a large proportion of victims choose to keep silence. The problem attracted public attention on 11th April, 2004 when a man committed suicide after killing her daughters and wife at Tin Shu Wai. Before the tragedy occurred, the wife had reported being battered by her husband to the Social Welfare Department repeatedly. The case has alerted the Government to announce 'zero tolerance' policy on domestic violence. According to a survey conducted by Chan Ko Ling (2000), 50.5% of the battered women endured the situation for as long as six years. This reflects a high degree of tolerance over the problem by women. This study took place at the University of Tennessee, but was conducted online using qualtrics and social media to gather data. The data was gathered from participants located all over the United States. This study was divided into two different phases in order to gather the most quality data possible. The first phase was an online study conducted through a system called Qualtrics and the second phase consisted of four in–person interviews. Participants were asked to rank each situation from 1 meaning "never" to 5 meaning "always". The reliability score for this scale ranged from .85 to well above .90. This is a very high score which means the scale should be very helpful in our research. James McCroskey developed the Tolerance for Disagreement Scale in 1998. (Teven, J. J., Richmond, V. The purpose of the scale is to tests people 's feelings and orientations by seeing their reactions. The reliability score for this scale was a .85. Bridget H. Mueller and Jaesub Lee developed the Leader–Member Exchange/Leadership Scale in 2002. Unlike the average scale, this particular scale consists of seven questions at the end of the article. Each question measures leadership based on the topic of leader– member exchange in some shape or form. I knew the basic topic in gender studies but couldn't go into depth if asked. Taking this allowed me to gain an insight on different topics that go on in the world dealing with women's and men's social justice rights. I was able to learn how women lack equal rights. This course taught me to think historically on issues surrounding women and equal rights. Since I am a female, I can think historically and put myself in other women shoes and attempt gain the perspective of what women faced in the early 1900's to the late 2000's. The goals of gender studies and feminism in the 21 century were to make it known that girls are a part of the world too. Women since the early 1900's face gender inequalities; whether it's in the work place, or in societal aspect. The goal of gender studies is to acknowledge how women were treated in early history of American civilization and how it correlates in today society. • 11. Sex And The Practice Of The Field Of Gender Study In How to Build a Man, Fausto–Sterling questions the neutrality of scientific works through examinations of scientific interpretations of sex and the practice of sex assignment at birth. Based on evidence and conducted by educated scientists, science is usually seen as truth and authority. However, interpreted by human beings with preconceptions, science, far from telling the truth and liberating people from old social understandings, actively interacts with current social values and reinforces the norms. In the perspective of gender study, a person's assigned sex is often seen as a stable biological identity as opposed to gender as a personal identification. Fausto–Sterling puts into question the certainty of assigned sex and implies that understanding sex as socially constructed is essential for change. However, how is this new understanding of science indicative of its role in the field of gender study? Scientific interpretations interact with social norms and values in two primary ways. First, while it is clear that the chromosomal sex is either XX or XY and the specific genes on the X or Y chromosome lead to the secretion of different types and amount of hormones, the following steps of sex/gender development are much more ambiguous and involves great variations. When evidence or observations are imperfect, however, scientists often attribute the consequence entirely to hormonal or genetic explanations, ignoring the intermediate steps where socialization can play an ... • 12. Gender Differences In Ethnographic Study There is a belief that woman remember places such as landmarks/pictures while men use maps without the need for pictures and this is still believed in today's society. A newspaper article by Revill J. (1999), mentioned that women lack the spatial skill needed to read a map. There have been many studies related to this topic, such the kind of strategy each gender use to remember maps, is it the nature that men possess the skills needed to read maps or is each gender nurtured to have such difference? And if visual–spatial memory is related to remembering maps. This study can help us understand if gender plays a role in map reading and uncover the myth on whether women really can't read maps. To test my hypotheses, I will be using a between–subject design. Recruitments will be first year UIC undergrads that are still not familiar with the UIC buildings, 20 males and 20 females are needed. The location will be the UIC–BSB building because of its complex structure. Participants will be split in two group; each group will have 10 males and 10 females' participants in even dispute of gender in each group. One group will receive a picture/landmark only map of BSB and audio instructions on where they need to go. The other group will have a text/spatial only map of BSB and audio instructions on where they need to go. The only tasks the students need to do is to travel from Harrison Street door of the BSB building to the 2nd floor BSB Psychology Computer Lab as fast as they can. The procedure will start with each participant picking a suitable time and date they are free. The participants will meet a person in the Harrison Street door of BSB that will hand them their picture or text map with audio directions. After giving the material to the participant, they will have 3 minutes to study the map, without audio. The person with the participant will signal and record the starting time the participant and when the participants reach the destination, another person will be in the room recording the time the participant arrived. A lot can be learned about rhetoric by looking at these two articles: "5 Charts That Show Sexism Is Still Alive and Well in Gaming" and "The Integrity of Women and Gender Studies". One portrays the gaming community as sexist and underrepresenting women (Kleeman) while the other condemns modern feminism for treating women as victims and "vilifying" men (Frohlich). The first uses many logical arguments that are used to bring emotion to the reader, and make them feel like certain things are ethically wrong (Kleeman). The second uses a slightly different technique, since it is explicitly an opinion piece (Frohlich). It leads the author to be trusted by the reader, and then presents the author's opinions that are backed by logical arguments (Frohlich). It also causes the reader to experience emotional and ethical feelings (Frohlich). 5 Charts That Show Sexism Is Still Alive and Well in Gaming This text is published by a media company called Mic. Gender Inequality In Law School Case Study In this paper, I focus on women's experiences in law school and law firms, and how these two institutions impact the role of gender within the professional partner track. I examine whether this disparity in the legal profession is just a reflection of society's views on gender or if this disparity is caused by the structure of law school classes or law firms and what could aide this inequality. As a female student with an interest in becoming a lawyer it is important to address and fix the strong gender inequality within the legal profession. In order to analyze this topic, I related the experiences of a female partner to research on the ranking of law schools, the hemisphere of law firms, and discrimination within these two areas. Although family law is gendered, I wanted to analyze how deeply gendered the legal profession is and whether the law school attended or law firm practice plays a role in this disparity. To do this I will apply Lawyer X's experiences to research on women in the legal profession, women owned law firms and discrimination within these two areas. Studies like Sterling and Reichman's (2016) show us that women are significantly underrepresented in partnership and ownership within the legal profession (Sterling & Reichman, 2016). The growth of women owned law firms will hopefully aid the disproportion of the genders within the legal profession. Lawyer X hopes that the formation of women owned law firms will in fact "be a trend, instead of an aberration, because it is important for women to be represented in the legal profession" (Lawyer X, 24 May 2017). The problem is age–old, however not till lately the government and the media started taking actions against this striking crime. Sexual harassment is present in every society around the world, in every place in Egypt – and it cost women an immeasurable damage emotionally and physically. It terrorizes women holding them back from their lives, work and duties, forcing them to measure the value of opportunities against the risk to their safety. The way sexual harassment has created fear in every basic life demand, women always trying to find a more secure path in their lives by avoiding sexual harassment, which sometimes manipulate their actions and decisions. The largest majorities face sexual harassment in Egypt, it is a vital problem and studies showed that almost every woman in Egypt had been subjected to it. This problem is notable and can occur in many ways or forms. Not only sexual harassment is constricted to offense – inappropriate act against victims' will –, but it is any violence that can occur to a woman in any platform or by anyway. Types of violence on women are various, however they can all be placed under two headings: physical sexual harassment and verbal sexual harassment. Equal Rights For Women And Women's Rights We're in the 21st century and still women are being harassed, are not receiving equal pay, same leadership opportunities, treatment in the workplace, and other equal rights that women should have. We've been through many movements including the Women's Suffrage March in 2017, which was a peaceful protest in which both women and men came out to support each other after the election, and protested about their personal rights as women. We haven't progressed much except for more people speaking up about this. It's basically mild segregation based on gender. Recently, some women have created a campaign #MeToo, where women started posting about men treating them unfairly. Eventually, more women started calling men out, and more men are losing their chances for a political position. One of the significant #MeToo political incidents includes Ray Moore, Republican Candidate for Senate, being stood up by many women about sexual harassment. More women are basically saying, "We've had it." The reason? Well, women are just fed up with how they're being treated. Pretty simple as that. Anne McElhaney, a 8th grader at Swanson Middle School, talks about her views and experience with the women's rights movements, including the most recent women's march. "I heard about the women's march, and saw it all over the news. On January 24, 2013, when then–Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta rescinded the rule that restricted women from serving in combat units and directed the Armed Services to review their occupational standards and assignment policies, the discussion of women in Combat Arms was thrust into the limelight. The debate on whether to allow women in direct combat roles is an emotional topic for most and it appears the latest policy change could very well be a mistake. The Combat Exclusion Policy dates back to 1948 when The Women 's Armed Services Integration Act of 1948 excluded women from combat positions. On April 28, 1993, combat exclusion was lifted from aviation positions by Secretary of Defense Les Aspin, permitting women to serve in most aviation units. Other restrictions were maintained on aviation units in direct support of ground units and special operations aviation units. In 1994, the Pentagon declared that Service members are eligible to be assigned to all positions for which they are qualified, except that women shall be excluded from assignment to units below the brigade level whose primary mission is to engage in direct combat on the ground.[1] This includes assignments to the Infantry, Special Forces and Armor. The Military : The Role Of Women In The Military Some say women cannot accurately shoot a gun or that they are not built for combat because of their low stamina and strength, or that they are not worth investing in because of all the time they spend training and teaching females to be as good as their male companions. The role of women in society are changing. Throughout history women have been helping the military through sending care packages to the front lines or by volunteering to train as nurses. Then when education became available for women, the increase in women proving themselves useful increased. They started becoming scientists, engineers, pilots, and strategists, but they have never been allowed to fight. However, recently women have proven that the advantages of having women in combat are more beneficial to the war front than the disadvantages. The military should recruit more woman for the military because women have shown the same determination and devotion to serving their country as their male counterparts, they have contributed enormously by providing necessary information that ultimately helps the war effort. They are just as reliable and train just as well as men. Lastly, women have not been proven to be weaker than men and in many cases, have been as successful as any other soldier. This brings up the question, should women be allowed to fight on the front lines? To get to the point, Edgar was a very sensitive, emotional, frail child, not at all portrayed as masculine. After Catherine and Edgar meet, it is obvious they will be married. One incident in particular seemed to set the tone of their marriage. On page 55, we see an example of Catherine's horrible temper and how it manifested itself through physical violence. Edgar, shocked at seeing "his idol" (p.55) commit such a deed, became very emotional and decided to leave. As we all know, he did not get very far before he came back. In this scene, Catherine became physically dominant, as shown by her use of force on everyone around her. Her use of manipulation to get Edgar back showed a very rational and intelligent mind at work, but the fact that she truly cried over the situation shows emotion, even if it was embarrassment. While Edgar was emotional during this scene, he was determined to leave, at first. He ultimately proved to be submissive by coming back and giving in to her. Growing up masculinity was only a term for men who brought an income to the home, otherwise known as the breadwinners. However, this was the typical stereotype which men were obligated to live up too. As time is passing the term masculinity is changing and instead of defining males and females separately, it is changing into a common definition of gender. Meaning no matter if you are female or male, gender will be known as a definition for both and there will be no separation. Men and masculinities also called men studies, which was a critique to the rising men's rights movement. It is a sub study of gender studies which gave the definition to masculinities by R.W. Connell.*** A lot of people believe feminism is what put gender in the mainstream. Years in the past we always saw men as leaders to led international relations but as times are changing females are getting in power. We tend to stereotype and automatically think this image of a man is the higher authority who is masculine and the aggressor. Women we see as like content, shy and as a victim. As times changed we saw women stand up for their rights and achieve that so–called masculine role. • 27. What Is The Importance Of Gender And Sexuality In African... In African American studies, the scholarship of gender and sexuality is largely based in the intellectual tradition that grew out of the civil rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s. With a discourse that historically examines the behaviors, conditions, and attitudes that foster stereotypes of social roles based on class oppression, sex, and gender identity as social constructs found to be inextricably bound together, the inclusion of gender and sexuality in African American studies reaches back to include the work of such diverse social and cultural activists as Anna Julia Cooper, Ida B. Wells, and Sojourner Truth. Working to situate the rights of all black people in a place of woman–inclusive equality, the scholarship moves forward through the work of activist intellectuals that include Elise Johnson McDougald, and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, who urged political action for black women as a form of physical and political protection. Moving forward, the fight for academic inclusion of African American studies broadened the examination of race, gender, and sexuality beyond the feminism that writer Alice Walker suggests emphasizes women's natural contribution to society (Walker, 2005). • 30. Academic Study Around Film And Gender Essay Academic study around film and gender tends to divide into two paradigms: positive postfeminist and negative feminist analyses. Mulvey (1975) propositioned the Male gaze theory, whereby the majority of films are made for male viewers, in which women are situated as passive objects for male visual consumption. Brooks (1997) argues this is still the case in mass culture and the arts, where women are objectified as sexual objects, which exposes society to negative role models. Postfeminist theory (Hermes 1995, Geraghty 1991) and in particular, within the study of popular culture, argues that the interpretation of cultural texts varies person to person, and consumers understand most texts to be fictitious and are used as tools of escapism from everyday life. This proposed research is situated between the paradigm of feminist content analysis and the film industry audience statistics. Through the synthesis of two approaches it will attempt to address a deficit in existing research in understanding widespread responses and generalised attitudes towards gender representation in film. To investigate reactions to only one or two texts is insufficient because each film does not exist in isolation and society is saturated in popular culture which users select from across types and genres. • 31. Gender Study Essay Rachel Luo M/W 9:30am–10:45am 9/29/2011 In Spite of Women – Esquire Magazine and the construction of Male Consumer Rhetorical Analysis One During early thirties and forties which was right after the depression, government and corporate felt the necessity to revive the market. At that time, people thought women were the ones with dominating consumption powers. As Kenon Breazeale quoted in his article, "Women are indeed the shoppers of the world." (Breazeale, 231). However, some people such as those in journalism fraternity regarded women's buying power as "gullible vulnerability to consumerism's trashy faddishness" (Breazeale, 232). Those people spread wide hostility toward women's taste and argued that men should be the ones with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Breazeale here showed how Esquire trashed women's taste in food and at the same time implied that male was much better in enjoying good food. By quoting several similar examples about home décor and drink, Breazeale pointed out that all those articles weren't written in any occasional incidents. By contrast, Esquire was knitting similar misogynistic threads for years to conceptualize people about the gender related meanings of good and bad taste. Food such as steaks and fowl, home décor with clean and functional features and alcohol were considered as good and related with masculinity. On the other hand, ornamentation, carrot teensie–weenesies and anti–alcohol were perceived as bad and femininity. As a summary of the function of text, Breazeale concluded that all Esquire did were trying to recuperate a female– identified role for men which need arguing against traditional gender related social roles. Yet at the same time, Esquire conveyed the message that any attempts of changing the traditional modes of patriarchal rules was not allowed. So it was necessary to emphasize the privilege that male had over female. This job was accomplished by the other function of the magazine – illustrations. Breazeale argued that by showing erotic spectacles ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I would accept the opportunity, believing I would be accepted differently by my peers. Also received more comfortably by my patients. The contrast in the same scene would vary greatly. • 33. The Problems of Sociolinguistic Studies of Gender... The Problems of Sociolinguistic Studies of Gender Differences Introduction It has long been assumed that women and men differ in their use of language. These differences are supposed to represent (and perpetuate) the social divisions between women and men. Few researchers will disagree that women and men's speech styles are different, though they may disagree as to what extent or as to what these differences may mean. Expecting to find such differences, I began a study of a two–hour conversation with my family. But in the course of attempting to transcribe my family's conversations and in reviewing the current research, I encountered many difficulties. Nearly every article I read seemed to contradict the previous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In her study, she found that use of more Standard English forms by the women in the community reflected their different job opportunities. The women mainly worked in white–collar jobs, such as teaching, where education and an understanding of Standard English were necessary. They also tended to have jobs that isolated them from members of their home speech community. The men in Nichols' study, however, worked in higher–paying, blue–collar jobs with co–workers who were mainly from their home speech community. Nichols' position is that, because of this discrepancy, the women were more motivated to use Standard English than the men were (Nichols 1983). Assuming that differences between women and men are due to the fact of their gender is a perfect example of what Aries calls the "fundamental attribution error." The "fundamental attribution error" refers to a tendency to attribute a person's behavior to some aspect of that person (e.g. gender), without considering the social context (Aries 1997: 92). In the example above, Nichols illustrates how opportunity and motivation can shape linguistic behavior. Of course, gender probably had an effect on the type of job opportunities available, but had only an indirect effect on linguistic behavior. • 34. Thai Culture and My Career Choice to Study Gender-Based... "What do you want to be when you grow up?" This may be a typical parent–to–child question for many families, but not for mine. Growing up in Thai culture, I have noticed a common role of women in my society. Most of my female family members are housewives and that is what I'm expected to be when I grow up as well. But I had bigger aspirations than that – I wanted to find a profession in which I, as a Thai woman, can gain respect and appreciation of people in my culture just as men can, and also gain a sense of personal fulfillment. As a result, throughout the first half of my undergraduate studies, I decided to follow an educational path that would prepare me to become a physician. I also took interest in Psychology, partly because of its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... program. I have learned that one of Professor Joyce Bono's current research interests lay in the broad area of gender stereotypes in management, and I would be excited to pursue my research interest with her. In addition to my interest in gender stereotyping and discrimination, I am also interested in the area of positive work relationships. My previous research experience has examined the relationship between personality and performance in medical settings. Working on this project has peaked my interest in the concept of core self evaluations, and how it can be related to issues of gender stereotyping and women's role in workplace. Specifically, I had recently started thinking of core self–evaluations as a potential mediating mechanism between gender stereotyping and job performance. For instance, women that are being stereotyped against may develop negative core self evaluations, and in turn – poorer levels of job performance. In the last two years, I have engaged in several psychology research projects and work experiences. My research experience ranges from being a data coder to being a co–author. For my first experience, I was responsible for coding data from team projects for a pilot study on virtual team performance carried out at the Psychology Department. Not long after, I was offered another research assistant position for a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Gender Studies: A Doll's House Shatori DePonte Cabison 12/04/14 ENG–256WI Professor Sims Second Essay Gender Studies– A Doll's House Bette Davis once said, "When a man gives his opinion he's a man, but when a woman gives her opinion she's a bitch". In the book, A doll's House by Henrick Ibsen the play is set in the early 19th century and explores individual liberty and gender equality at that time. Ibsen effectively brings out the issue of gender inequality in society and marriages. In this book Nora and Torvald are husband and wife and are both victims of society. All the characters in this book represents the stereotypical ideal of their respected genders; Torvald is the hardworking man that brings all money to the house, Nora is her husbands "doll" of a wife, and Krogstad ... • 36. My New Perception Of The World And Gender Studies Class Essay The first time that I ever took a woman's and gender studies class was this semester, and before taking the course all information regarding gender, class, sex, language, identity, exile, agency, power, and race was based on personal experience. I have never formally learned about the proper terminologies that define the systems of oppression that I experienced in my everyday life. I feel that this information was vital to me because now that I can properly identify these problems I have the tools necessary to fix them. I also learned that may of those themes are universal and the way that women in particular suffer is the same across various cultures. Considering the theories, novels lectures, class discussions, and presentations I can say that I am walking away from this class with an ample amount of critical information. Most importantly are the themes that contributed to my new perception of the world and the role that I play in it. I have learned that gender and sex, contrary to popular belief, are not synonymous terms. This is important because society has a set of sex and gender roles that society says people are supposed to follow. While one is not given the opportunity to choose their sex, they are given the opportunity to choose what gender and behavioral expectations they uphold. This in turn means that gender is not assigned at birth; it is culturally mandated and therefore allows for change. Additionally, one of the most important terms that I learned in this ... • 37. Gender Studies And Queer Theory In Movies The videos presented talk about three different movies, Halloween, Frozen, and 300. The videos use the gender studies and queer theory to criticize the movies. I believe that gender studies and queer theory was used because the videos focus on the genders used in the movies. Also another approach that was used was the feminist criticism. According to The Norton Introduction to Literature, gender studies "turned to interpretation of the text in ideological context regardless of the sex or intention of the author." (Mays,1989) In the honest trailer for the movie 300, the video focuses on the movie having nothing but men on it. The review basically focuses on how men were portrayed as having to be muscular and very fit. Throughout the majority of the movie it is also nothing but males, fighting against each other in war. Which is the "normal" thing to see, because if it was girls fighting it would be an unusual scene. The video also uses phrases that can be seen as the author trying to hide his real sexuality, which is what gender studies is also a part of. It is stated in The Norton Introduction to Literature that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the movie Frozen, it has two princesses which we are used to only seeing one in movies. A regular Disney movie usually just has one princess who falls in love with a prince, but in Frozen neither of them fall in love with a prince, rather only one of the princesses falls in love with a normal resident from where they live. In this video there is also some of the feminist criticism used. Feminist criticism is used because it is two princesses fighting against evil, when usually women are portrayed as weak and are in need of a prince rescuing them. In the movie Ana and Elza are portrayed as independent, strong, and capable of making their own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Gender Schema Case Study Early Adulthood Since Timothy is 15 years old, he would have acted differently from when he was 10 years old. The first concept was "gender schema," at the age of 10, Timothy would not have acted differently from when he was 15 because gender schema starts at a very young age. Kids start to develop a sense of how a female or male should act in the future. In the "formal operational stage," what would occur differently is that at the age of 10, Timothy would instead be in the "concrete operational stage," which means that instead of having the question of "what–if," he would be thinking in the perspective of his parents. He would try to place himself in his parent's shoes. The last concept was "identity v. role confusion" stage, at the age of 10, Timothy would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. My Reflection On Womens And Gender Studies Before taking this class, I did not know a lot about women's and gender studies. Reading the different books and looking at the different pieces of art helped me the most in this class. There were many pieces in this class that influenced me to learn more about these women's and gender issues and reflect on my learning. I spent a lot of time taking notes while reading the stories and relating them to what I have experienced in my life. For example, the graphic memoir we did as a project showed how I related to women's and gender issues. It showed my struggle as I played T– ball as the only girl on the team. This experience allowed me to compare it to the stories we read as part of the class. One of my favorite books we read in class was Fun Home written by Alison Bechdel. This was one of my favorites because of her writing style and the way she showed her women's and gender issues. She uses a lot of detail as she writes which is one thing I like about her writing style. Another thing I like about her writing style is the way she describes the issues that she has encountered. For example, she uses the pictures to help the reader better understand how she has struggled. I find that this helps me better understand the plot of the story. This story has greatly changed how I feel about women's and gender issues. Before reading this story, I did not realize how many issues women suffer from regarding who they are. Bechdel shows her struggle with her father and being a lesbian. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
