Course Title : Grammar
Course Book : Fundamentals of English traditional syntax
Credit Points : 02
Hours of instruction : 30 (Weeks of instruction: 6)
I. Course objectives:
After taking the course students will be able to:
- have a systematic knowledge of grammar, branches of grammar, phrases, clauses, parts of
speech, closed system items and open class items
- distinguish basic noun phrases and complex noun phrases,
- form adjective phrases, adverb phrases and prepositional phrases
- classify verbs in term of their complementation
- identify the elements of the sentences and distinguish different types of sentences : simple,
compound and complex sentences
- distinguish adjuncts, disjuncts and conjuncts and identify appositions in the sentences
II. Course contents
- Chapter 1: An introduction to English traditional syntax
- Chapter 2: Nouns and noun phrases
- Chapter 3: Verbs and verb phrases
- Chapter 4: Adjectives and adverbs
- Chapter 5: Prepositions and prepositional phrases
- Chapter 6: Simple sentences and Compound sentences
- Chapter 7: Complex sentences
III. Course requirements
- It is necessary that students prepare for all lessons at home.
- Presentation: the class is divided into 7 groups who will be responsible for presenting the given
topics.
IV. Assessments:
Performance in the course will be measured on the basis of the following items:
- Classroom discussion and oral presentation : 25%
- Mid- semester test: 25%
- End- of- semester test: 50%
