2. Course Description: This course presents an interdisciplinary study of western ideas,
art, music and literature from the eighteenth century to the twentieth century. It
comprises a survey of the Enlightenment, Romantic, and Modern periods, focusing on
the crucial intellectual and artistic movements which have had a revolutionary and
shaping influence on western civilisation and the world at large.
Course Objectives: The course will provide students with the intellectual background
to help enrich their studies in the humanities. It aims to foster an informed and
appreciative awareness of some of the major issues and assumptions that have helped
make the modern western world what it is today. The course is designed to be
interdisciplinary, international and interactive. Students will read selections from
classic literary and philosophical texts, listen to music from the traditional western
concert repertoire, examine works of art, and participate in discussions about all of
these. Students will be encouraged through their assignments to develop the abilities
to read and interpret sophisticated cultural texts, to appreciate works of music and art,
and to write at university level about the material they study.
