Scenario: The following information was relayed during an evening news broadcast. Law enforcement officers arrived to the scene of an alleged robbery during a community festival. The festival was held in the historic district of the community and was hosted by the historic district’s neighborhood association. The festival incorporated numerous activities that fully engaged participants in arts and crafts, use of technology, sampling of various food items, and the handling of various wares. The festival provided a variety of activities, so it attracted attendees from throughout the world. Thus, the festival was usually full of nonstop activity from the time it began in the morning until it ended in the evening. When the policemen arrived on scene, the festival appeared to have stopped. People were standing around in small clusters and watching a group of suspects that had been forced to sit down in the middle of a stage that was previously used for performing music groups. The festival security informed law enforcement that security had apprehended the suspects after several vendors reported that the suspects had taken their wares from the display tables without purchasing them. The vendors reported that when they confronted the suspects, the individuals fled the scene with the wares. The festival security also informed the policemen that when they apprehended the suspects, they had none of the reportedly missing wares in their possession. While the festival security personnel were briefing law enforcement on the situation, several of the suspects’ relatives entered the scene and asked why the suspects were detained. A police officer overheard one suspect who told a relative that the detention was a result of taking wares from the vendors without payment. The policeman also overheard the suspect telling the relative to pay the vendors for the missing wares in hopes that no charges would be filed. Based on the information that the law enforcement officer overheard, the suspects were taken into custody. During the transport to the local jail, several of the suspects engaged in casual conversation with the police officers and provided some details as to their whereabouts before, during, and after their apprehension. The law enforcement officers then booked the suspects, took them into an interrogation room, and read them the Miranda rights. All of the suspects requested legal counsel and refused to answer any of the investigators’ questions. .

■ Research Paper General Systems Theory: Its Past and Potential† Peter Caws1,2* 1Department of Philosophy, The George Washington University, Washington, DC, USA 2American Association for the Advancement of Science, Washington, DC, USA This paper has three parts. First, I discuss what I take as the original stimulus and the pur- pose of general systems theory (GST) to be, why I think it is important, and how I came to be involved in it. I reflect on von Bertalanffy’s general system (sic) theory and the early debates on the topic, stressing the essential concept of isomorphism, with its rewards in following up parallel developments in different domains, and its risks and temptations in the projection of grand and all-inclusive systems. Second, I discuss the direction my own work took after my term as President of the Society for General Systems Research (1966–1967), and how it diverged from the early program, in particular in its emphasis on the difference between system and structure and on the essential role of individual subjectivity in the latter. I stress the importance of the concept of ‘relation’ as underlying that of ‘system’, and in particular the difference between relations as embodied in physical systems and relations as components of intentional structures that may or may not corre- spond to physical systems. In the third and final part, I discuss the place of GST in the philosophy of science, especially in connection with the unity of science movement, and its potential for the organization of this domain. I ask what light the concept of system can throw on our knowledge of the universe and its worlds (a distinction explained in the paper), and what the risks are of assuming tight isomorphisms between mathematical structures and physical systems, for example, in cosmology and quantum mechanics. ••• JONATHAN LETHEM CRITICS OFTEN USE the word prolific to describe Jonathan Lethem. He has published nine novels, five collections of stories, two essay volumes, a novella, and a comic book. But a better word for him might be protean. In the religion of the ancient Greeks, Proteus was a god of the sea who presided over unexpected change, a power that gave him the ability to alter .his shape whenever humans tried to compel him to foretell events. Like the mythical Proteus, Lethem is a shape-shifter whose work threads across boundaries of all kinds-the boundaries between detective :fiction, for example, and the "serious" literature of ideas. What Lethem has written about New York might be said to encapsulate his view of both life and art: To live in Manhattan is to be persistently amazed at the worlds squirreled inside one another, like those lines of television cable and fresh water and steam heat and outgoing sewage and telephone wire and whatever else which cohabit in the same intestinal holes that pavement-demolishing workmen periodically wrench open. . . . We only pretend to live on something as orderly as a grid. For Lethem, the writer's task is to look beneath the reassuring surface. He believes the truth is seldom found by stopping with the obvious or respecting conventions. Indeed, he sees the act of writing as fundamentally promiscuous. Perhaps it is not at all surprising that Lethem would have some unexpected ideas about what it means to be creative. Normally we think of creativity as the ability to say or do something completely original, but the isolation implied by this belief strikes Lethem as unappealing. Instead, he celebrates what he calls the "ecstasy of influence." If we wish, we can treat words, ideas, and images as some body's private property, but we can also view them as available for everyone to use. Nothing, he suggests, is totally original: everything is bound up with every thing else, if not on the surface, then underneath, like the "lines of television cable and fresh water" hidden by the "grid."
