DISPLAYING INFORMATION
โ€ข Human information input and processing
depends on the sensory reception of relevant
external stimuli which contain the information

โ€ข The original source of information (the distal
stimulus) is some object, event, or
environmental condition.
โ€ข Information from the distal stimulus may come
to us:
๏ƒ˜ directly (e.g. direct observation of plane), or
๏ƒ˜ indirectly (e.g. radar or telescope).

Cont. DISPLAYING INFORMATION
โ€ข In the case of indirect sensing, the new distal
stimuli may be
๏ƒ˜ coded stimuli (e.g. visual or auditory displays),
or:
๏ƒ˜ reproduced stimuli (e.g. TV, radio, hearing
aids)
๏ƒ˜ In both cases the coded or reproduced stimuli
become the actual distal stimuli to the human
sensory receptors.

โ€ข Human factors are required when indirect
sensing applies.
โ€ข Display is a term that applies to any indirect
method of presenting information (e.g. highway
traffic sign, radio).

INFORMATION PRESENTED BY DISPLAYS
(General)
โ€ข Information presented by displays can be
dynamic or static.
โ€ข Dynamic information: changes continuously
or is subject to change through time.
๏ƒ˜ Examples are: traffic lights, radar displays,
temperature gauges.

โ€ข Static information: remains fixed over time.
๏ƒ˜ e.g: alphanumeric data, traffic signs, charts,
graphs, labels.
โ€ข Note that static information presented through
VDTโ€™s (video display terminals) is considered
static information.

INFORMATION PRESENTED BY DISPLAYS
(Detailed)
โ€ข Quantitative: such as temperature or speed.
โ€ข Qualitative: represents approximate value,
trend or rate of change.
โ€ข Status: reflects the condition of a system (such
as on or off, and traffic lights).
โ€ข Warning and signal: indicating danger or
emergency.

(Detailed)
โ€ข Representational: pictorial or graphical
representation of objects, areas, or other
configurations, e.g. photographs, maps,
heartbeat oscilloscope.
โ€ข Identification: used to identify a condition,
situation or object, e.g. traffic lanes, colored
pipes.

โ€ข Alphanumeric and symbolic: e.g. signs,
labels, printed material, computer printouts.
โ€ข Time-phased: display of pulsed or time-
phased signals. The duration and inter-signal
intervals are controlled.

SELECTION OF DISPLAY MODALITY
โ€ข Visual or auditory displays? Tactual sense?
โ€ข The selection of the sensory modality depends
on a number of considerations.

โ€ข Table 3.1 helps in making a decision regarding
visual or auditory presentation of information.

CODING OF INFORMATION
โ€ข Coding takes place when the original stimulus
information is converted to a new form and
displayed symbolically.
โ€ข Examples are:
๏ƒ˜ radar screens where the aircrafts are converted
and presented as dots on the screen
๏ƒ˜ maps displaying populations of different cities with
different symbols.

โ€ข Information is coded along various dimensions.
โ€ข Examples:
๏ƒ˜ Varying the size, brightness, color and shape of
targets on a computer screen.
๏ƒ˜ Varying the frequency, intensity, or on-off pattern of
an audio warning signal.
โ€ข Each of the above variations constitutes a
dimension of the displayed stimulus, or a
stimulus dimension.

โ€ข The usefulness of any stimulus dimension in
conveying information depends on the ability of
people to:
๏ƒ˜ Identify a stimulus based on its position along the
stimulus dimension (such as identifying a target as
bright or dim, large or small)
โ€ข This is an example of absolute judgment.
๏ƒ˜ Distinguish between two or more stimuli which differ
along the stimulus dimension (such as indicating
which of the two stimuli is brighter or larger)
โ€ข This is an example of relative judgment.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD
CODING SYSTEM
โ€ข Detectability of codes:
๏ƒ˜ stimulus must be detectable by human sensory
mechanisms under expected environmental
conditions
๏ƒ˜ e.g. is worker able to see the control knob in mine?

โ€ข Discriminability of codes:
๏ƒ˜ every code symbol must be discriminable
(differentiable) from other symbols
๏ƒ˜ the number of coding levels is important

โ€ข Meaningfulness of codes:
๏ƒ˜ coding system should use codes meaningful to
user
๏ƒ˜ Meaning could be
โ€ข inherent in the code (e.g. bent arrow on traffic
sign)
โ€ข or learned (e.g. red color for danger)
๏ƒ˜ Meaningfulness: related to conceptual
compatibility

โ€ข Standardisation of codes:
๏ƒ˜when a coding system is to be used by
different people in different situations, it is
important that the codes be standardised, and
kept the same for different situations
๏ƒ˜e.g. meaning of the red color in different parts
of a factory

โ€ข Use of multidimensional codes:
๏ƒ˜this can increase the number and
discriminability of coding stimuli used.

COMPATIBILITY
โ€ข It is the relationship between the stimuli
and the responses to human
expectations.
โ€ข A major goal in any design is to make it
compatible with human expectations.

โ€ข It is related to the process of
information transformation
๏ƒ˜the greater the degree of compatibility, the
less recording must be done to process
information
๏ƒ˜This leads to faster learning and response
time, less errors, and reduced mental
workload.
๏ƒ˜People like things that work as they expect
them to work.

โ€ข 1. Conceptual compatibility:
๏ƒ˜related to degree that codes, symbols
correspond to conceptual associations
people have.
๏ƒ˜It relates to how meaningful codes and
symbols are to people who use them.
๏ƒ˜e.g.: airplane symbol to denote an airport on
a map means much more than a square or
circle
๏ƒ˜e.g.: creating meaningful abbreviations and
names for computer applications

โ€ข 2. Movement compatibility:
๏ƒ˜relates to the relationship between the
movement of the displays and controls and the
response of the system being displayed or
controlled.
๏ƒ˜e.g.: to increase the volume on the radio, we
expect to turn the knob clockwise.
๏ƒ˜e.g.: upward movement of a pointer is
expected to correspond to an increase in a
parameter

๏ƒ˜Refers to the physical arrangement in space
of controls and their associated displays
๏ƒ˜e.g. how displays are lined-up with respect to
corresponding control knobs

โ€ข 4. Modality compatibility:
๏ƒ˜refers to the fact that certain stimuli-
response modality combinations are more
compatible with some tasks than with others.
๏ƒ˜e.g.: responding to a verbal command that
needs verbal action is faster than responding
to a written or displayed command requiring
the same verbal action.

  • 3. DISPLAYING INFORMATION โ€ข Human information input and processing depends on the sensory reception of relevant external stimuli which contain the information 3
  • 4. โ€ข The original source of information (the distal stimulus) is some object, event, or environmental condition. โ€ข Information from the distal stimulus may come to us: ๏ƒ˜ directly (e.g. direct observation of plane), or ๏ƒ˜ indirectly (e.g. radar or telescope). 4

DISPLAYING INFORMATION โ€ข In the case of indirect sensing, the new distal stimuli may be ๏ƒ˜ coded stimuli (e.g. visual or auditory displays), or: ๏ƒ˜ reproduced stimuli (e.g. TV, radio, hearing aids) ๏ƒ˜ In both cases the coded or reproduced stimuli become the actual distal stimuli to the human sensory receptors. 5
  • 6. โ€ข Human factors are required when indirect sensing applies. โ€ข Display is a term that applies to any indirect method of presenting information (e.g. highway traffic sign, radio). 6
  • 7. INFORMATION PRESENTED BY DISPLAYS (General) โ€ข Information presented by displays can be dynamic or static. โ€ข Dynamic information: changes continuously or is subject to change through time. ๏ƒ˜ Examples are: traffic lights, radar displays, temperature gauges. 7
  • 8. โ€ข Static information: remains fixed over time. ๏ƒ˜ e.g: alphanumeric data, traffic signs, charts, graphs, labels. โ€ข Note that static information presented through VDTโ€™s (video display terminals) is considered static information. 8

INFORMATION PRESENTED BY DISPLAYS (Detailed) โ€ข Quantitative: such as temperature or speed. โ€ข Qualitative: represents approximate value, trend or rate of change. โ€ข Status: reflects the condition of a system (such as on or off, and traffic lights). โ€ข Warning and signal: indicating danger or emergency. 9

INFORMATION PRESENTED BY DISPLAYS (Detailed) โ€ข Representational: pictorial or graphical representation of objects, areas, or other configurations, e.g. photographs, maps, heartbeat oscilloscope. โ€ข Identification: used to identify a condition, situation or object, e.g. traffic lanes, colored pipes. 10
  • 11. โ€ข Alphanumeric and symbolic: e.g. signs, labels, printed material, computer printouts. โ€ข Time-phased: display of pulsed or time- phased signals. The duration and inter-signal intervals are controlled. 11
  • 12. SELECTION OF DISPLAY MODALITY โ€ข Visual or auditory displays? Tactual sense? โ€ข The selection of the sensory modality depends on a number of considerations. 12

CODING OF INFORMATION โ€ข Coding takes place when the original stimulus information is converted to a new form and displayed symbolically. โ€ข Examples are: ๏ƒ˜ radar screens where the aircrafts are converted and presented as dots on the screen ๏ƒ˜ maps displaying populations of different cities with different symbols. 14

CODING OF INFORMATION (Cont.) โ€ข Information is coded along various dimensions. โ€ข Examples: ๏ƒ˜ Varying the size, brightness, color and shape of targets on a computer screen. ๏ƒ˜ Varying the frequency, intensity, or on-off pattern of an audio warning signal. โ€ข Each of the above variations constitutes a dimension of the displayed stimulus, or a stimulus dimension. 15

CODING OF INFORMATION (Cont.) โ€ข The usefulness of any stimulus dimension in conveying information depends on the ability of people to: ๏ƒ˜ Identify a stimulus based on its position along the stimulus dimension (such as identifying a target as bright or dim, large or small) โ€ข This is an example of absolute judgment. ๏ƒ˜ Distinguish between two or more stimuli which differ along the stimulus dimension (such as indicating which of the two stimuli is brighter or larger) โ€ข This is an example of relative judgment. 16
  • 17. CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD CODING SYSTEM โ€ข Detectability of codes: ๏ƒ˜ stimulus must be detectable by human sensory mechanisms under expected environmental conditions ๏ƒ˜ e.g. is worker able to see the control knob in mine? 17
  • 18. โ€ข Discriminability of codes: ๏ƒ˜ every code symbol must be discriminable (differentiable) from other symbols ๏ƒ˜ the number of coding levels is important 18
  • 19. โ€ข Meaningfulness of codes: ๏ƒ˜ coding system should use codes meaningful to user ๏ƒ˜ Meaning could be โ€ข inherent in the code (e.g. bent arrow on traffic sign) โ€ข or learned (e.g. red color for danger) ๏ƒ˜ Meaningfulness: related to conceptual compatibility 19

CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD CODING SYSTEM (cont.) โ€ข Standardisation of codes: ๏ƒ˜when a coding system is to be used by different people in different situations, it is important that the codes be standardised, and kept the same for different situations ๏ƒ˜e.g. meaning of the red color in different parts of a factory 20
  • 21. โ€ข Use of multidimensional codes: ๏ƒ˜this can increase the number and discriminability of coding stimuli used. 21
  • 22. COMPATIBILITY โ€ข It is the relationship between the stimuli and the responses to human expectations. โ€ข A major goal in any design is to make it compatible with human expectations. 22
  • 23. โ€ข It is related to the process of information transformation ๏ƒ˜the greater the degree of compatibility, the less recording must be done to process information ๏ƒ˜This leads to faster learning and response time, less errors, and reduced mental workload. ๏ƒ˜People like things that work as they expect them to work. 23

Conceptual compatibility: ๏ƒ˜related to degree that codes, symbols correspond to conceptual associations people have. ๏ƒ˜It relates to how meaningful codes and symbols are to people who use them. ๏ƒ˜e.g.: airplane symbol to denote an airport on a map means much more than a square or circle ๏ƒ˜e.g.: creating meaningful abbreviations and names for computer applications 25

Movement compatibility: ๏ƒ˜relates to the relationship between the movement of the displays and controls and the response of the system being displayed or controlled. ๏ƒ˜e.g.: to increase the volume on the radio, we expect to turn the knob clockwise. ๏ƒ˜e.g.: upward movement of a pointer is expected to correspond to an increase in a parameter 26
  • 27. โ€ข 3. Spatial Compatibility ๏ƒ˜Refers to the physical arrangement in space of controls and their associated displays ๏ƒ˜e.g. how displays are lined-up with respect to corresponding control knobs 27

Modality compatibility: ๏ƒ˜refers to the fact that certain stimuli- response modality combinations are more compatible with some tasks than with others. ๏ƒ˜e.g.: responding to a verbal command that needs verbal action is faster than responding to a written or displayed command requiring the same verbal action. 28
