In practice, however, this is not the case. Many laws and governmental practices impose the morality of a group of people on the people in general.

The word cult is defined as an alternative religion. Most cults are started because someone doesn't like the way the world is, and feels that his/her
church isn't doing anything to make it better, so they leave and create what they believe to be the perfect religion. Then this person strives to make
others believe as they do so they will join (Miller, 1991, p. 15). There are somewhere around 3,000 to 5,000 of these cults throughout the United States,

In 1977 Jones was forced to move his church to a secluded jungle in Guyana, South America. There he created Jonestown (Cults R Us, 2000,
September 27, p. 1).
In 1978, Leo Ryan went to Jonestown on a fact–finding investigation. After being there for only one day, a member tried to stab him. When Ryan tried
to leave the compound, members of the church shot at his plane and killed him. A few hours after this incident, Jones made all the members drink

One of the more recently publicized cults is Heavens Gate. Heavens Gate was the only known "doomsday–cult–web–design–team". On March 26,
1997, they believed there would be a space ship hiding in the tail of the Hale–Bopp comet, and it would come and take them to their "mother planet".
This caused a mass suicide of 21 women, and 18 men. "All the people that committed suicide were between 26 and 72, all had buzz cuts, were dressed
in black pants, oversized shirts, and brand new Nikes".

The Devil or Lucifer is arguably one of the most famous figures in existence. He is considered the Prince of Darkness and is supposed to be the
embodiment of evil. However, our perception of the Devil has changed drastically over the centuries. "Satan" can mean something very different
depending on the person. Some see the Devil as their god or a hero and others seem him as a symbol of all that is wicked. Some may view the Devil
as nothing, but a joke and others believe he is as real as the rest of us. The concept of "the Devil" continues to evolve. The first mention of the Devil

simplified things with his belief in one good god and one bad god. This created separation between good and evil. Zoroastrianism has influenced the

The Church of Satan and the Church of Scientology are both new religious movements that share a fascination with the individual "self" in which they
place a lot of attention on this concept. I believe the reasoning for such a focus on the self is because conventional religion never emphasizes it. With
that being said, both L. Ron Hubbard and Anton Lavey went on to capitalize on this. They are two charismatic leaders, wanted followers and
therefore they tapped into an area that was never discovered before. New religious movements tend to focus more on areas where their previous
religion never touch on, or restricted people from thinking that. With that being said, these two leaders are suppose to add to people's lives and that

This quote comes about from the idea that God wanted the angels to worship Adam, but since Satan is senior to Adam, he feels wronged, and
refuses to bow down to man. God was not only displaying his own authority over all of the angel's lives, another knock to free will, but also
wanted to extend that authority to another being. Whether that being was Adam or the son, Satan didn't want anything to do with that proposition,

The devil, in literature, is always a catalyst of change for those who encounter him. He is a force working underground, moving against what is
widely considered virtuous and good, and it is contact with him that often changes the course of characters lives, and even the world. In Paradise
Lost and a book based on it, The Golden Compass, 'the devil', in both cases, is an advocate for moving away from the control of God and the Church.
Where the stories differ, is in the author's intent for these actions. In the former, John Milton uses the devil to display how vanity and pride are the sins
that halt us in an opportunity to live blissfully, with and under God. Philip Pullman, in his twist on Paradise Lost, The Golden Compass, claims that ...
"His splendor simply overrides our consciousness of his evil" (Werblowski, 12). The reader cannot help but be swept up by his fervor.
"We shall be free; th' Almighty hath not built Here for his envy, will not drive us hence: Here we may reign secure; and, in my choice, To reign is
worth ambition, though in Hell: Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven." (Milton, BK I, 259–263).
Lord Asriel also exudes a charisma and a determination that everyone who crosses his path cannot help but be moved by. Literary critic
Werblowsky claims Milton's Satan "is surrounded by an aura of majesty and power" (70, Werblowsky), which is the interpretation which Pullman
seems to directly draw from for his character. When his daughter, Lyra, observes him, she thinks, "Lord Asriel was a tall man with powerful
shoulders, a fierce dark face, and eyes that seemed to flash and glitter with savage laughter. It was a face to be dominated by, or to fight: never a face
to patronize or pity" (Pullman, 12).

determine who would best be able to cope with, or cure the disease, or if it could be
cured at all. For instance, according to the ASAM addiction is a chronic disease. The
definition of chronic is "marked by long duration or frequent recurrence".

Therefore, one could conclude that addiction is not curable, but will recur over time.
The true definition would actually look at the root cause of any addiction. It
would make sense from a theological perspective that since sin is the root cause of
addiction, and sin can be cured, addiction, too, can be cured. The next step, of
course would be to test the hypothesis.
Ephesians 5:18 states "And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled
with the Spirit". This verse determines that alcoholism would be sin because it goes
against the teaching "be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess". Paul tells the
church at Philippi in Philippians 4:5 "Let your moderation be known to all men..."
One could conclude that moderation in all things preclude any type of addiction

A. Rationale and Preliminary Research I investigated Satan in the Catholic church; who he is and how he is described. I have a previous
knowledge of the Catholic faith because I used to attend mass as a child, and because most of my family is catholic and practicing. Satan is a very
popular symbol talked about in society, yet what is said does not seem very educated, so I wanted to learn more about who Catholicism states Satan is,

B. Plan for Study
This investigation will seek to examine how Satan is perceived in the adherents of the Catholic faith. The scope of this investigation will include how
Satan is described in Catholicism, by his different names. The plan will be to use different online sources that explain Satan. The Catholic faith has
specific names for Satan that will be researched and examined. The names tell how Catholics see Satan and how they view his actions. Many of the
online sources will be written by well–known adherents of the Catholic faith (two of Christian faith, but correspond to that of Catholic teachings.) The

Eschatology has significant implications on how I understand the ways in which God will finish his redemptive work. Furthermore, eschatology sheds
light on the Kingdom of God, which Christ came to inaugurate. As a result of these convictions, I have chosen to write a paper discussing the
amillennial position. I will primarily be discussing this position in light of Revelation 20:1–6 and will use other key passages to rightly interpret what I

see in this text.
At this point in my studies I'm leaning towards the amillennial view with an understanding that Satan is bound through the death and resurrection of
Christ, is currently prevented from ultimately deceiving the nations, and cannot hinder the spread of the gospel. I believe that we currently live in the
church age and at the end of this present age, Satan will be let loose for a final battle against the church of Jesus Christ. Christ will then return and
judge all of his enemies and the promised new creation will become reality– where his people will bodily reign with him even as they are currently
seated with him spiritually. It is my goal now to unpack these convictions and explain why I'm leaning towards the amillennial position.

For the believer, it is important to be aware of the beliefs around you and to be careful of what you adapt into your own theology. As said before
the Jewish people adapted some ideas of the devil, angels and demons from the beliefs of the cultures surrounding them. It is also important to not
