Loss Of Individualism
Charlie Reiss
Period 8
Mrs. Kraner
Prompt #1
Using individualism to think and live like others is not always bad. Being able to connect to a group of people brings happiness and a sense of
belonging which is needed in people's lives. It is also good to want to be like others because in dire situations where mass populations are needed to
comprehend directions, all these people are conscious and knowledgeable of the situation. However, the loss of individualism is a problem to society
because there becomes a loss of diversion and spread of ideas which come from individuality. The belonging to a group is satisfying, but it leads to
the overall loss of our individuality as people and a society, which is the barrier to against the individuality ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The lives of many minorities would be drastically different if it wasn't for individuals who stood up for their beliefs. The non–conformists throughout
society have showed to be the only people who make real change. Without change, lives would be different and the world would not accept the
different races the amount they accept them today. In order to have an individuality you need to rely on yourself rather than others, which we have
learned in depth from Emerson. Individualism is the most important attribute of the world today and needs to be sustained within people as well as
grown into people who haven't experienced an individual part of their

Arguments Against Radically Individualism
Radically Individualism represents a hero or villain. Hudson (2013) defines the traditional celebration in the United States," A hero or villain are
representative of America's celebration in novels, moves, and television often carries over into perception of the real world" (p.106). For example, in
the late of 1980s to 1990s, many kids watched cartoon shows every Saturday in the early mornings. They observed the similar and difference roles of
superheroes in good or evil deeds. The relationship between children's exposure to superheroes and their development of moral values depict their both
positive and violence behavior clearly while learning in the definition of their individualism and liberty rights (McCrary, 1999; Martin,2007). The ...

In their roles, they have to identify the particular issues in their situational surroundings. They carry their individual liberty risks while serving their
duties in the public service. The pursuit of interests through politics depend on their values, beliefs, and choices they make that will shape
individualism rights. In the recent indictment, the sewer contamination industry caused local residents' health conditions in danger because of
elected leaders have ignored the concerns of hazardous effects. Now, Americans look at them as greedy and heartless leaders that have put their
lives in a major connection to a live and death situation. These leaders face their consequences in pursuit in their selfish interests that turn out illegal
and unnecessary evil. Now, the mobilization of political power is based on their liberty choices when they are in the leadership positions. In the
world of politics, the hope of cooperative efforts toward common ends is necessary disappointed and, in a situation where each individual focus in
pursuing their own interests selfishly (Bellah, 2007). Politics portrays the power status in the role of professional individualistic term clearly
(Hudson, 2013, p.106). According to Robert Bellah's viewpoint in the value of individualism very detailed and eloquently," We find ourselves not
independently of other people and institutions but through them. We never get to the bottom of ourselves on our own. We discover who we are face
to face and side by side with others in work, love, and learning. And the positive side of our individualism, our sense of the dignity, worth, and moral
autonomy of the individual, is dependent in a thousand ways on a social, cultural, and nation context that keeps us afloat" (Martin, 2007,

Who Is The Worker Antz Individualism
Social 30 Source Based Question
By: Josh V
Source number one is a quote taken from an unknown source and it analyses the perception of individualism by those who are uneducated. When
looked at unbiased, individualism is not a negative ideology. The writer appears to be frustrated with those who do not understand this principle. This
is evident by the way he or she mocks those who do not understand individualism by calling them ignorant.. They also attempt to justify the ideology
using diverse interpretations such as "I will not sacrifice myself to anyone–nor sacrifice anyone to myself" and "I will not rule nor be ruled". The
speaker attempts to deconstruct the preconceived notion of individualism and replace it with one of prosperity and self–reliance. ... Show more content

In source one, the writer evaluates how one must hold regard for others rights and freedoms and respect them and source three holds the opinion that
collectivism on a small scale is acceptable but on a large scale it is dangerous. Both of these sources speak about how without collectivism,
individualism can not prosper. Source two is different however, in that it shows a much more collectivist opinion. Although the views may not be in
line with individuality, there are still some aspects of this ideology. If in an ant colony, One individual feels like they are more important than the
others it will leave for chaos. However you also can not treat individuals as though they are nothing. You must be careful not to promote enough
individualism so that the ideology spreads, but also be sure to provide enough so that each individual feels important. All three sources agree with the
idea that collectivism and individualism are like ying and yang: Without one you can not have the

Individualism In America
When asked the question, "How is Individualism as a value in the United States compared to other democracies." one can produce many answers. But,
the most logical reason by far is due to the heightened opportunities for Americans to better themselves as opposed to other democracies.
In Figure 1.3, the value of individualism in America versus foreign democracies is statistically, and very clearly, depicted in its favor. One reason being
is that individualism is highly dependant on the government giving the people the tools needed "to achieve on their own, and that everyone should be
given the same opportunity to achieve success." America was built on opportunity, and this has been proven time and time again throughout history.
Rather it be by supporting capitalism and free enterprise, or allowing both natives and immigrants to obtain an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Upon granting citizenship to all persons in the United states, the government created an environment in which anyone can be a part of something
greater. No longer would immigrants and slaves be treated of lower value, or given less. This was an immense step in allowing workers to work for
themselves, while at the same time also bettering the country as a whole due to greater overall patriotism and employment rates. Any worker who is
given fair opportunity, free land, and rights far greater than their old country will be more than willing to go to war for said country. This creates a
strong military, a strong sense of nationality, and another reason for Americans to support and value individualism. Without the governments constant
efforts to direct power away from the government and into its peoples hands, i doubt our country would be as strong and individually based as it
would today. Its no wonder than Americans are so proud of their individually acquired successes in life, as its been done in history many times before

'Individualism In Ayn Rand's Anthem'
"Individualism is the idea that the individual's life belongs to him and that he has an inalienable right to live as he sees fit, to act on his own
judgement, to keep and use the product of his effort, and to pursue the causes of his choosing." My take on individualism, is basically that we can
control ourselves, we can do what we want with restrictions to keep those that stand by us safe. Individualism is a way of a society. Now, on the other
hand there is collectivism, "the idea that the individual's life belongs not to him but to the group or society of which he is merely a part of has no
rights, and that he must sacrifice his values and goals for the group's greater good." My take on this is "idea" is that you are completely controlled
when put under this way of society. Having read the book Anthem by Ayn Rand collectivism is for sure something that I would not want to be a part of.

Individualism is having our own thoughts, our own lives, and our own bodies. I believe that, that is super important for us human beings. There is
a great quote that I came across on individualism by a man named Douglass, I don't honestly want to put all of that here but there is a part of it
where he says "I am myself; you are yourself; we are two distinct persons, equal persons." I think in all honestly this completely sums up
individualism. We are all our own people, which is how we should be living, with our own lives (all according to individualism of

Rules, some people follow them, others do not. Many people ask why these rules exist, or what they even mean. In Anthem, the rules in their society
were created to assure that society would not have another catastrophe, like one before the Unmentionable Times, when the Evil Ones wreaked havoc
on the World, destroying everything in their path. Many of these rules limit one's capabilities to think independently. Failure to follow these rules result
in harsh punishment. One man, by the name of Equality 7–2521, has defied a numerous number of these laws. This man has made a monumental

Individualism as an American Cultural Value
Individualism as an American Cultural Value
Individualism is often viewed as a positive trait in America, suggesting a certain level of personal confidence. American society tends to reward
independent thinkers and those who decide autonomously. To this end, individuality has become a value in many American homes. Although
individualism is widely received and respected in American culture, it is not as well respected in other cultures. One culture in particular which frowns
on individualism is the Asian culture.
Thai family values are very different from American family values. In Asian cultures the family unit is highly valued and emphasized, whereas, in
American culture, the focus is on individuality. Values derived from the American... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This training and rearing of children in individuality projects a great air of importance, however, it places many Americans in a position of being
lonely. The connotation of individuality in America is that of being strong and confident yet many Americans struggle with loneliness because they
have been taught to do for themselves, think for themselves, and to stand on their own two feet. While I believe that some of the intents of
individualism can be respected and do contribute to many positive aspects of American life, I do not believe that we as Americans should rely so
much on the value of individuality. It has been said, it takes a village to raise a child, and Asian culture has grasped this concept of community.
I must say that I agree with Dr. Sponsel, "individualism as one of the dominant values in American culture is expressed in many ways" (425). If you
asked most Americans what the cultural values in the U.S. are, you might get some blank stares, or a statement of some basic beliefs. The question
may seem simple, but the answer is quite complex. In a society as highly diverse as the United States, individualism towers over everything else.

American Individualism
Over the past 150 years American Individualism has been changed. People have started to feel this sense of fear against one another, and even the
government. The government are the individuals that are suppose to protect our values, and make us feel safe. Privacy is no longer a guarantee, and
it can be taken away at any time. Throughout the pieces Society and Solitude, What to the Slave is The Fourth of July, and The Snowden Files. Many
different examples of loss of privacy and the loss of the basic components of our society have taken place. In these pieces three different individuals
Emerson, Douglass, and Snowden show how the effect of society, and the influence of the government has impacted AmericanIndividualism.
Society and Solitude written by Ralph Waldo Emersonstates what society means to him. Emerson states, " To be a member of society is to be a
conformist, and this makes self reliance impossible." (Emerson paragraph 2)This quote explains that Emerson believes that to live in our society
you have to go with the normal. He states that society makes it hard to come up with your own ideas or opinions. Emerson emphasizes that "It is
so easy with the great to be great; so easy to come up with an existing standard." (Emerson paragraph 1) Emerson is saying that if you have all the
ingredients to be great than you will be, and if not then you won't. In his essay Emerson believes that society will break a person, and it is better to

Individualism And Individualism
Individualism is a core value of American culture. It has been influencing all the fields of society, economics, politics and culture. It has played an
immense and extensive effect to shape the character and mindset of the American nation. In the colonial period of 1607 – 1776, these Europeans had
come to a new land to find new opportunity. The Colonists knew nothing but the rule and culture of England, thus bringing traits of it into their new
society in the New World. They did not have a keep grip on societal development until people started to speak up about new ideas and meanings of
life. But they feared from straying from the past traditions of England because of a possible chance that England would see that they were not able
to thrive and settle in this new place. Thus, when different opinions, ideas, or anything opposing current societal ways, it was to be banished, killed,
or in some way rid of before society was able to change in any way other than what the entire group of the community wanted. This time focused on
groups of people and the entire population's views and conformity rather than the individual's beliefs and principles. The rationalism period between
1750 and 1800 focused on major changes in society especially through religion and government life. Acts and plans imposed by the British government
enabled Americans to realize the lack of true freedom and liberty they had being under control of England. This era sparked numerous new mindsets
and attitudes

Hellenostic Individualism Vs Hellenistic Individualism
In 323 B.C., the Hellenic Humanistic civilization came to an end, and Hellenistic individualism was born. Hellenistic individualism was everything
that Hellenic Greece was not. This new time period would be described as "Greekish" because it was not purely Greek in culture (Humanities, 83).
Before the Individualistic era began, the civilization was united in language, philosophy and religion, having a strong historical impact that connected
them. Hellenistic individualism was created in a time of loneliness and isolation. When the polis were replaced, individualism emerged, because people
were searching for continuity, they were searching for identity through the individual (Humanities, 91). I will be contrasting the different viewpoints
from Hellenic Age and the Hellenistic Age; focusing on the philosophy of Aristotle, the philosophy of Epicurus and the new art form. The Hellenistic
Greek culture is different starting with the shift of the polis to the cities. The new era was a blend of past ideas from the East and West (Messner
10–27–17). Some of these ideas were building on the ideas of the polis, but that goal was not able to be succeeded. For many reasons being, the new
state was bigger, diverse and did not have an equal leadership balance (Messner 10–27–17). This resulted in a completely new era where people began
to have new perspectives that they did not have before. Their perspective on philosophy, which was heavily impacted by Aristotle, took a huge turn.

In an individualist culture, individual personal goals take priority over their constancy to their groups like family or the business employers. The
reliability to a group is extremely feeble; they believe they have a place within many groups and are able to change their participation as it suits
them, changing religions or places of worship, for instance, or abandoning one job for another. In an Individualist culture, you learned to grow into
your own person, shaping your life to fit into your own mold rather than that of others. Parents in individualist cultures have a tendency to be more
definitive; they promote advanced freedom, independence, investigation of the earth, and put less accentuation on dutifulness and friendliness, as
opposed to restricting yourself to the qualifications or stipulations of a group. They want you to figure out how to see yourself as your own
particular being. They want to mentality drive you to see your own novel advantages and attributes. Things like going to college, drawing, and
painting are diversions that could assume an enormous part of someone's life, yet the group is not needed to drive these interests onto a person. In
addition, being your own individual gives you responsibility for your activities. Furthermore, when you need to achieve objectives, you need to put in
the diligent work as opposed to anticipating that others will do work for you. An example of individualism would

Cloning & Individualism
Results May Vary: Adam Phillips's Theory of Cloning and The Paradoxical Apotheosis of Individualism Adam Phillips's essay "Sameness Is All"
takes the form of a dialogue with two children to introduce the fantasy of cloning in which everyone is identical. Specifically, Phillips observes that
cloning is a "denial of difference and dependence" which leads to a "refusal of need" (92). However, Phillip remains mindful that such fantasy of
physical or psychological sameness is implausible as everyone is different – even clones. One then questions the significance of such wanting of
sameness, or if the sense of sameness serves any purpose. Using the concept of Self and Other that Joanne Finkelstein examines in "The Self as ... Show

After highlighting the interdependency of the Self and Other, Finkelstein uses this association between Self and Other to delineate the adverse
consequences of this symbiotic relationship. By identifying the halo effect as a source of social pressure to conform, Finkelstein allows the reader to
see Phillip's theory of cloning as a feasible solution to the inherent issues of social injustice and despair in this concept:
DeJong and Kleck (1986:66) maintain that...the overweight not only do not have an acceptable physical appearance but are also perceived as

desirable physical attributes, and thus "gratuitously assigned other valued attributes." Conversely, an unattractive individual will be perceived as having

Text 6. Individualism versus Collectivism.
The individualism–collectivism dimension refers to how people define themselves and their relationships with others. In an individualist culture, the
interest of the individual prevails over the interests of the group. Ties between individuals are loose. People look after themselves and their immediate
families. In a collectivist culture, the interest of the group prevails over the interest of the individual. People are integrated into strong, cohesive ingroups
that continue throughout a lifetime to protect in exchange for unquestioning loyalty (Hofstede, 1997). One difference is reflected in who is taken into

A collectivist's values and beliefs are consistent with and reflect those of the in–group. Moreover, a collectivist's association with his or her in–groups
may last a lifetime. In many collectivistic cultures, the primary value is harmony with others. Triandis observes that because group harmony is so
highly valued, obedience to, and compliance with, in–group pressures is routine. One's behavior is role based, and deviations from the prescribed role
are discouraged and often negatively sanctioned. A person's behavior is guided more by shame than by personal guilt. A collectivist who stands out
from the group disrupts the harmony and may be punished. Most collectivistic cultures value social reciprocity, obligation, dependence, and obedience.
But by far, the primary value stressed by many collectivistic cultures is harmony.
Traiandis believes that collectivism is based on the tenet that collaboration and cooperation ultimately lead to survival. Both collaboration and
cooperation require obedience and harmony, which is typically managed and coordinated by someone in charge, such as an authority. Authority, or
one's rank in the group, is a salient feature of many collectivistic cultures. Collectivists tend to see each other in terms of hierarchically ranks roles, not
as individuals. Collectivism can be found in parts of Europe, such as southern Italy and rural Greece. Much of Africa, Asia, and Latin America is

US a drastically individualistic country, it is seen as collective. Italians are renowned for taking care of themselves and immediate families as depicted

Examples Of Individualism In Beowulf
In the late 1830's, the word "individualism" was first introduced in the English language as a pejorative by the Owenities. It exemplifies the habit or
principle of being solely independent as well as self–reliant. Having individuality creates a boundary within a single person. During the pre–14th
century, many people believed that individuality was a very important aspect in their community. This method describes a type of social idea in which
an individual favors freedom of action for other individuals over both collective and formal control. The development of one's personality and the role
of fully evolved individualism were known to have access for the men and women of that time to express the gratitude of self–reliance and
independency. An individual can then separate themselves from other persons in order to possess his or her own goals and desires. In many Anglo
Saxon literatures, there are multiple factors that builds a character's individuality. The ideas that are made have allowed the readers to be able to

Relativism And Individualism
Individualism relates to human suffering when one put themselves first than others without taking into consideration the feelings of those around them
because they are only thinking of themselves. To illustrate, in contemporary America most people put their elderly and disabled families' members in
nursing homes because they do not want to take the time to provide the care and love for them. The relationship of relativism to human suffering
expresses that there is no wrong or right answers when it comes to making decisions about moral issues such as administering medication to end a
loved one's life, abortion, and transgender. For instance, today's culture looks down on transgender because we believe that it is spiritually wrong, but

Importance Of Individualism
In past society, such as the Incan empire or Chinese dynasties, an individual's identity and rights were in the hands of their country and rulers. Recent
emergence of the individual has flourished into the West, with ideas such as democracy and liberalism. Is focusing solely on the individual, however,
the right step toward creating a just and prosperous society? While individualism is beneficial to the individual, the blatant disregard for others' and
unpredictability of consequences makes individualism as inviable method towards creating a prosperous and peaceful society.
In short, the principle of individualism is to put one's self–interests and concerns as the highest priority, above society or a collective group's concerns.
All actions are done solely for the best interest of the individual. Contrastingly, collectivism acts on the considerations and approval of the others or of
one's respective group. One must consider the well–being or opinions of others for the consequences of one's actions.
Many people may think of individualism as being selfish, of only doing things for the benefit of oneself. While individualism puts oneself as above
any groups, the philosophy is more concerned with freedom and independence from any group. An individualist wants freedom for all, and lives in
society for the benefit of themselves rather than others. In this way, individualists have a stronger sense of personal identity, and are less likely to
accept unbalanced power structures and

Michael Tocqueville Individualism
"I did not encounter a citizen in America so poor that he did not cast a glance of hope and longing on the enjoyments of the rich and whose

speaks in regard to every American. Personally I believe that this quote does define what an, "American," is. We as a society do not give up, that is
how the revolution began and it leads to one of the most powerful nations today. America is a proud nation, Tocqueville saw this and took note of it.
He saw that many people had to complete tasks on their own, or prove that they were worthy in a way to feed their own egos. Despite this the citizens
are also quite kind, generous and accepting of each other. This is shown throughout the whole community, in the novella. One of the most well–known

Individualism or Collectivism in Society Essay
Debate Question: Which ideological group has had the greatest impact on modern society? Individualism or Collectivism. Terms: Individualism–>
when you value the freedom and worth of the individual, sometimes over the security and harmony of the group or a belief in the importance of the
individual and the virtue of self–reliance and personal independence
Collectivism–> is basically when you think that values and the goals of the group and the common good over the goals of any one individual are the
most beneficial. It stresses human interdependence and the importance of a collective, rather than the importance of separate individuals

If we all work together to help people out we can get a lot of ideas put together and do a lot of good for the group. In Canada we are a mostly
collective country especially next to the states. We have universal health care which widely helps out people who wouldn't otherwise be able to see a
doctor or dentist without it.
If the government helps people out then the standard of living would increase. Poverty could be diminished, health problems could be cured, and
people would be able to afford leisurely activities putting money back into the government to help others out. Health care would be free and
widely available to all to use. No having to pay for expensive prescriptions and doctors visits cutting back on the spread of diseases and sick people.
Public property is used and is managed by a collective to benefit everyone in the community. All kids can go to school no matter their parents
financial state giving them a chance to finish and go on to post secondary and get a good paying job. In Saudi Arabia and Sweden schooling is
paid for by the government from kindergarten all the way to post secondary education. It benefits everyone because everyone can go to school
regardless of their wealth. It inspires people to get a good education and a good job. Of course you have to have the marks to get into post secondary
but its paid for. Studies have shown that people living in a collective society have lower crime rates than those who are living in a

Individualism In America
The United States has the highest score in the category of individualism with 91, followed by France at 71, and Spain at 51. For America to score
that high isn't at all surprising to me. It is even considered to be one of the most individualistic cultures in the world. Our society is predominately
focused on "I" instead of "we", as in they believe in putting themselves ahead of others to the point that other cultures may even view it as selfish.
France is also considered an individualist society, however, is considered to have stronger family bonds than other individualistic societies. The French
also believe in having a distinct line between work and private life than the U.S. does, even though they scored lower. They also believe in relying

An Excellent Example of Individualism
An Excellent Example of Individualism Throughout history, there have been many people who have had to struggle and fight for individualism.
Although for some of those people, they have been able to accomplish the seemingly impossible tasks needed to obtain their own. For example, the
Greensboro Four, who non–violently protested against racial segregation, or Malcolm X, a black–right's activist who believed in a brotherhood
between races. Although one of the more historical icons that showed individualism is Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights activist who peacefully
fought for african–american rights as equals. Though he is not just remembered for his "I Have A Dream" speech, but for his fight for individualism,
and for all humanity both present and future. But Martin Luther King Jr. didn't simply wish or snap his fingers to win the fight for those rights that
belong to him and his brethren. Unfortunately like others before him, M.L.K. had to struggle and use chief elements he found necessary for the
individualism that he and so many others deserved. In order for a person to become an individual they would require chief elements that were
demonstrated by Martin Luther King Jr.: Civil disobedience, others who share the same ideas of beliefs, self–reliance and peaceful tactics on how to
achieve the desired goals.

TShifting to a more contemporary lense, Libertarian's ultimate priority of individual rights has evolved in present day America into a set of
supplementary values called individualism. Although this principle is never mentioned in Hospers paper, his positions stated on personal liberties and
self–preservation serve as the foundation for this idea, which extends these rights to be applicable as a lifestyle where every decision is made strictly
for someone's own personal benefit. (Boaz) Unsurprisingly, individualism also entails a resistance to all type of restrictive measures by authoritative
powers, especially the obligation to provide assistance to another citizen financially or otherwise. (Boaz) In the Libertarian view, nobody should be
forced to even tell someone "the time of day if requested" against their will. (Hospers, 331) In this sense, Individualism can be seen as the active
exercise one's individual liberties. Furthermore, according to David Boaz of the Libertarian think tank The Cato Institute, individualism also gives a
person the power to flourish on their own terms, and can also provide a sense of "dignity", especially to underrepresented groups. (Boaz)
Whether or not by design, this Libertarian emphasis on individualism is a theme that has become heavily ingrained into contemporary American life as
the culture, economics, and politics of the country all have elements of this value. In fact, according to a recent Pew research study, U.S. citizens hold

Examples Of Individualism In Anthem
Individualism is a big idea that is portrayed in Anthem to mean valuing the unique characteristics of an independent human and what great
contributions these characteristics can make. One image in the collage is a bright lightbulb shining amongst dim, uniform lightbulbs, which relates to
individualism in Anthem because Equality thought differently than the rest of his brothers who were taught to think alike. The phrase "made to be
noticed" relates to individualism, because it implies that all humans are unique and have at least one quality that separates them from the crowd. On the
collage, there is an image of two white stars and one brown star in the middle, which represents that under the concept of individualism each person
stands out from the rest and are different than the others around them. The next image is of a bright light shining as an individual's brain ... Show more

The American flag represents individualism, because it separated from England and created a new, individual country. The flower represents how
Equality bloomed and grew as he discovered his distinct ideals about individualism, as he did not fully understand his so–called curse at the beginning
of the story, but was a proud supporter of it at the end. The phrase "a star that continues to shine" is relevant to individualism because it shows that each
human being can prosper independently, and the phrase "create your dream" indicates that in individualism, each human has the right to do what they
want under no influence of anyone else's opinion. The girl lifting a truck with one hand is symbolic of the major idea in Anthem, that strength is not

Individualism In The Movie Antz
The major theme of the movie Antz is Individualism vs. Collectivism, it explored the concepts of both ideologies but it does not necessary tell which
one is the better option between the two that's why it is important to know their difference for our better understanding. Individualism as shown in the
movie, was Z who is a firm believer of the ideology. He values freedom and the right to express their own beliefs. However in collectivism, they believe
that each one of us has a fixed role in the society that we should obey for the benefit of the whole.
The movie has good representations of the collectivism point of view like what ants always talked about the betterment for their colony rather than for
individuals. In the movie, equal chances

Individualism In Modern Society
In modern culture, societal views on individuality are vastly effecting the new generation of people. Individualism, emphasizes the ability for one's
morals to be independent from society. Many who express individuals tend to dismiss the status–quo, as they recognize their self worth and the
capability to realize it is acceptable to be different. Meanwhile, others who may struggle to determine their individualism, tend to struggle with figuring
out who they are and why they are special in society. Society creates sources of criteria that enables stereotypes that reducing one's ability to become an
individual. Society also creates ideals of who you should become in society which tends to be similar to your peers around you. Although there are
people who are accepted by society who express enormous amounts of individualism, the overall impact of society tends to hinder one's role as an
individual in the community due to requirements that society has created. We have all heard of names such as Heidi Klum, Kendall Jenner, and Gigi
Hadid. These ladies are not only seen as models, while they have achieved the term supermodel. How they have attained this title is no question. In
modern society to reach this label you must meet the requirements that tag–along. Big brands as Wilhelmina, Fords, and hundreds of other modeling
agencies regularly have overarching trends that are perceived by society that create ideals for models that they must be "over 5'9, weigh no more than

Thoreau And Individualism
While Thoreau recognizes the people's affinity toward order, he abhors the fact that states misconstrue the original grounds for government: protection
of individual rights. It is, however, ironic that the noisy, complicated government of Thoreau's time had only a fraction of the bureaucracy of the
government we have today. This illuminates the extent to which modern society, let alone current day society, contrasts the natural locus of human
interaction. – 69 words
This sentiment correlates with the massive amount of incarceration in the U.S. for often minor crimes. The idea that the law is synonymous with
morality is preposterous, and alludes to a supposition that everyone's morals are the same. Personally, the law should only protect individual rights by
punishing acts by individuals that encroach upon the rights of others. Since everyone shares the same desire to free himself from the tyranny of his
neighbor, such a policy would vastly reduce the amount of incarceration and protect to an even greater extent individual liberties. – 93 words
Thoreau's allusion to soldiers in the Mexican war is comparable to 21st century military decisions. For example, the decision to declare war on Iraq in
2003 illustrates how individuals in a position of authority can command blindly obeying soldiers to their will. Soldiers are the very antitheses of
individualism because they hinder any form of conscience and personal morality. – 60 words

Individualism And Its Impact On Society
Many people across the world have their own definition and beliefs of the word individualism. There is nothing selfish to be able to express ones
personality and internal emotions. Being an individual alone could value a person's overall true character. The claim presented would be opposed by
many because people like to feel independent and self–reliant. Individualism in today's society lets people express themselves, and helps create
something small into something big. For a long time now individualism has existed since the founding of our country. History was created by those
who showed independence and proved that an individual can do it all. Today, society has been impacted in a positive way because individualism has

Another example could be the ending of racial segregation. People like Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa parks fought individuality to stop
segregation. Today's society is better because of what a couple of individuals did to make it this way. This could also be supported by this quote, "And
while the law [of competition] may be hard for the individual, it is best for the race, because it ensures the survival of the fittest in every department."
(Carnegie). Individuality was greatly used when defending the right for equality in between the races. Society today has progressed over the centuries
due to the bravery of several individualists. People pride themselves in their individuality to make the world better, memorable and unforgettable.
Consequently, individualism is the key to making the society better and turn something that could benefit towards others. Many believe that people
who think about themselves are self–centered and do not care about the people around them. That is where their wrong. Individualism is not just about
one certain person; it is about the whole world. Stated by President Woodrow Wilson, "America is not anything if it consists of each of us. It is
something only if it consists of all of us." (Wilson). This proclamation overall shows how everyone is their own individual self but as a nation we all
stand together. People are individuals.

The Importance Of Individualism
Many people look at their government and how it affects them on a day to day basis but do not see what it does to everyone at once. The
government's total authority over a country can vary from place to place, but they all make laws and rules that constrict their citizens in some way.
Sometimes those laws can either have positive or negative consequences, which is dependent on the government's views on how to run the country.
Those consequences lead the country into one of two categories – individual or collective. The government sets boundaries for individualism because of
the laws they put in place for its citizens, which ties them to either side of the spectrum of individuality and conformity.
Initially, understanding the scale of individualism and collectivism is important when trying to relate it to a government and its effects on people.
Looking at this in a very broad manner doesn't always clearly define it, however. In an article written by Carrie Rothstein–Fisch, this is explained
through the education system. "In the United States, a country known for its history of 'rugged individualism', the dominant values include
independence, self–reliance, individual achievement, and cognitive development." She goes on to add that migrant students from collectivist countries
have a difficult time adjusting. In this example, opposing ends of the spectrum meet, which fuses them together and creates a middle ground. To
elaborate, the primary individualistic teachings of the

Individualism Vs. Collectivism : The Idea Of Individualism...
A trending topic in society today is the idea of individualism versus collectivism. They each have their advantages and disadvantages. Ideally a person
has to choose which is more important, themselves or their group. The United States teaches us to value individualism, but a blend of each could help
benefit our nation as a whole. My results reflect that I identify more with the idea of individualism with a score of 32 out of 40 versus a collectivism
score of 18 out of 40. I assumed my results would reflect independence. These results are proof that I value independence, my own freedom, that I am
self–sufficient, and the need to control my life through my decisions. I motivate myself, I am my own worst critic, and my successes in life are for
me. I set high standards for myself, I hold myself accountable to achieve the results, and I am hard on myself when I fall short. My upbringing
supports individualism. It has always been very difficult to rely on anyone and this led me to be self–sufficient. I was constantly let down when I
depended on someone. While in high school, I worked three jobs, participated in many clubs, and band; but my highest accomplishment was
graduating eighth in my class as an honor student. My mother struggled to take care of four children while in an abusive relationship with my
alcoholic stepfather and I learned early that if I wanted something I needed to be prepared to get it myself, because I did not have a group to depend

A&P Individualism Essay
Self–Expression and Individualism
In "A&P" by John Updike it is shown that conformism is a major part of society in that time. In the story everything is like a well–oiled machine, but
when three girls' walks into the "A&P" store all of this changes for Sammy. A theme that is predominant in theshort story by Updike is individualism
shown by the girls and how Sammy responds to the events in the story. It is clear in the story that individualism wasn't a dominant trait in people.
Sammy saw people as "sheep pushing their down the aisle" (Updike 6)

The girls' individualism inspires Sammy to finally get out of the machine of the A&P store and just of society in general. Sammy becomes angry
and frustrated and begins to realize he is unable to conform to society's norms with contributes to his individuality and his stubbornness to Lengel as
Lengel tries to stop Sammy to no avail from quitting his job. Sammy is very prevalent and persistent in his choices that he made and nothing that
Lengel says hinders Sammy. It is like Newton's third law of motion which is if one force acts on an object and equal and opposite force will act on it.
So the more Lengel tries to calm Sammy the surer and stubborn he gets of himself.
For the most part of "A&P" Sammy is a weak, disaffected, and opinionated character. He's been living his life in A&P doing nothing for himself and
sees everyone under him. He doesn't make any choices and criticizes others in his mind. Only after the individualistic girls enter A&P and Lengel
confronts them Sammy gets enough strength in his ways to stop conforming to how the store works and how the sheep act and ultimately doesn't want
to become like Lengel or Stokesie. Even after realizing that Sammy himself lost everything he knew life is only going to get harder, because now he
doesn't want to get stuck in the system of society like A&P. Sammy's behavior may seem abstruse, but that's explains his individuality and the story
provides a strong sense of individuality through Sammy and

The ideas that are made have allowed the readers to be able to
grasp a clear understanding of who the character is and what his or her sole purpose is for being a part of the story. In Beowulf, the main character,

Beowulf's pride did not amount to anything when it came to saving his country and keeping them secured. His pride is what gives him the courage to
take on the tasks of his individuality. Beowulf ends up victorious because he truly believes in himself and he never gives up. He is successful because
his pride does not let him accept

Examples Of Individualism In The Odyssey
Rugged individualism is the belief that every person should be able to help themselves out, and that the government does not need to involve itself in
people's economic lives nor in national economics in general. This means one who is a "rugged individual" is an independent person, who in most
cases stands as a strong willed individual either physically and/or mentally. Therefore a person with attributes of a "rugged individual" should be able
to exemplify an individualized standpoint on life and provide for themselves. In literature you must possess characters who add their own
characterized touch to the book. For example, in the "Odyssey" Odysseus is characterized as a brave, tough man who is prepared to go through any
obstacle the gods throw his way. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Society" was a crime, yet she still was unbothered by what anyone else said or did. Another character in this story who is characterized as a "rugged
individual" is Pearl. Pearl is basically the offspring of a crime in this story, which is pretty bad considering they are extremely religious and believe
breaking the sanctity of marriage is like murder. They say things like "This woman has brought shame upon us all, and ought to die; is there not law
for it? Truly there is, both in the Scripture and the statute–book." Although Pearl is born into this situation and looked at as a "demon child" she doesn't
let it bother her. She even stands her own ground when at the "governors hall," "after frowning, stamping her foot, and shaking her little hand with a
variety of threatening gestures, suddenly made a rush at the knot of her enemies, and put them all to

Durkheim Individualism Suicide
In his work On Suicide that was published originally in 1897, Durkheim addresses four specific forms and triggers of suicide. These are not
considered to be ideal types in his belief but they can be measured in social situations (Walsh, 27/09/16, s. 6–8). It is within all of these four extreme
types that suicide rates are the highest. The first of these is named egoistic suicide. According to Durkheim, egoistic suicide occurs when an individual
is not integrated or invested in society at all, their life is overly individualistic. This form of suicide and individuality can be associated with the term
organic solidarity. Organic solidarity is used in more modern, industrialized organized societies where the individual starts to see themselves as unique
and the focal point of importance rather than being connected to this large conglomerate of people. An egoistic person does not affiliate strongly with
any form of institution that would offer stability or community in their life. He often associates egoistic suicide with religious affiliations, especially
Protestantism (Durkheim, 2006: 156). Due to the core values of the Protestant religion being on the emphasis of individualism and interpreting the
sacred texts on your own, there is a gap ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Origin of Individualism
As is mentioned in Introduction, the origin of American Individualism can be traced back to the beginning years in its history, when first American
immigrants came to the North American continent looking for better life and shaking off they yoke of European feudal tradition and the oppression
from all kinds of powerful classes. It is determined that there were elements of Anti–oppression and searching for freedom in American people's
character. This was the original explanation of AmericanIndividualism.
Although the term "Individualism" was not in general use until the 1820s, the foundational principles behind the concept were established by the
mid–eighteenth century. Enlightenment philosophers like Newton and Locke argued that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Franklin's presentation of himself as the ideal American individual was widely accepted. While he lived in France, he was celebrated as the
embodiment of the lived in France, he was celebrated as the embodiment of the virtue, naturalism and simplicity that supposedly characterized the new
world––––an image he carefully maintained by shunning French fashion to dress plainly and wearing a primitive fur hat around Paris. So effective
was Franklin's physical self–presentation he became a kind of cult finger in France. Paintings, prints, busts, medallions, clocks, vases, plates,
handkerchiefs and even snuff–boxes were manufactured emblazoned with Franklin's portrait. His American Individualism had become a popular
commodity.
" American Westward Movement and life in the border area promoted greatly to the development of American Individualism, therefore, some people
believed that Individualism was actually a certain kind of cultural heritage of frontier life."[15] P53 The American famous historian Frederick J.
Turner held that the vast land in the west area had endowed American people a deeply understanding of freedom. It can be easily found in American
history of Westward Movement that those pioneers tried their best to contribute their hometown, set up many school buildings and search for a better
life for their families. They would fight for their liberty and freedom willingly and gladly

Essay On Individualism And Collectivism
This essay will discuss the influence of cultural dimensions on behavior. A cultural dimension is defined as a perspective of a culture based on its
values and cultural norms. In particular, Hofstede's cultural dimension of individualism vs. collectivism will be discussed. Individualism vs
collectivism is defined as the preference of a person only being concerned about oneself and looking after oneself, compared to a person who wants to
remain in a closely knitted network. These are some terms with definitions which will be used in this essay: the Asch paradigm, which refers to the
studies conducted by Solomon Asch, in which he showed his participants different lines and asked them to verbally judge and respond as to what the
length of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Expanding on that, a person is immeresed in his/her culture since birth, and has no choice but to adopt the values necessary to survive. An
individualistic community encourages a person to make his/her own choices; moreover, one would be less concerned about the "we" and more
concerned about the "I". This lowers conformity levels, because each person is willing to do what he/she wants and is more concerned about
self–surival than harmony in the community. A strength of this study could be participant variability because it eliminates the possibility of this
behavior only being limited to one type of person/community. Accordingly, a limitation could be the lack of ecological validity (one will not be asked
to identify the length of a line in real life), and the multitude of confounding variables including the time and place, which could influence the results.
Overall, the study demonstrates how individualism affects behavior, since a person who demonstrates indivdualistic behavior would exhibit less
conformity, as seen above.
In a collectivist society, the individual is integrated into a tightly knit society that offers protection and support. If an individual in a collectivist society
does not live up to the expectations or norms of that society, the result could be severe. This is seen in the meta–analysis conducted by Bond and
Smith. The meta–analysis focused on studies done utilizing the

Loss Of Individualism

  • 1. Loss Of Individualism Charlie Reiss Period 8 Mrs. Kraner Prompt #1 Using individualism to think and live like others is not always bad. Being able to connect to a group of people brings happiness and a sense of belonging which is needed in people's lives. It is also good to want to be like others because in dire situations where mass populations are needed to comprehend directions, all these people are conscious and knowledgeable of the situation. However, the loss of individualism is a problem to society because there becomes a loss of diversion and spread of ideas which come from individuality. The belonging to a group is satisfying, but it leads to the overall loss of our individuality as people and a society, which is the barrier to against the individuality ... The non–conformists throughout society have showed to be the only people who make real change. Without change, lives would be different and the world would not accept the different races the amount they accept them today. In order to have an individuality you need to rely on yourself rather than others, which we have learned in depth from Emerson. Individualism is the most important attribute of the world today and needs to be sustained within people as well as grown into people who haven't experienced an individual part of their ... Hudson (2013) defines the traditional celebration in the United States," A hero or villain are representative of America's celebration in novels, moves, and television often carries over into perception of the real world" (p.106). For example, in the late of 1980s to 1990s, many kids watched cartoon shows every Saturday in the early mornings. They observed the similar and difference roles of superheroes in good or evil deeds. The relationship between children's exposure to superheroes and their development of moral values depict their both positive and violence behavior clearly while learning in the definition of their individualism and liberty rights (McCrary, 1999; Martin,2007). The pursuit of interests through politics depend on their values, beliefs, and choices they make that will shape individualism rights. In the recent indictment, the sewer contamination industry caused local residents' health conditions in danger because of elected leaders have ignored the concerns of hazardous effects. Now, Americans look at them as greedy and heartless leaders that have put their lives in a major connection to a live and death situation. These leaders face their consequences in pursuit in their selfish interests that turn out illegal and unnecessary evil. Now, the mobilization of political power is based on their liberty choices when they are in the leadership positions. In the world of politics, the hope of cooperative efforts toward common ends is necessary disappointed and, in a situation where each individual focus in pursuing their own interests selfishly (Bellah, 2007). Politics portrays the power status in the role of professional individualistic term clearly (Hudson, 2013, p.106). According to Robert Bellah's viewpoint in the value of individualism very detailed and eloquently," We find ourselves not independently of other people and institutions but through them. We never get to the bottom of ourselves on our own. We discover who we are face to face and side by side with others in work, love, and learning. And the positive side of our individualism, our sense of the dignity, worth, and moral autonomy of the individual, is dependent in a thousand ways on a social, cultural, and nation context that keeps us afloat" (Martin, 2007, ... Who Is The Worker Antz Individualism Social 30 Source Based Question By: Josh V Source number one is a quote taken from an unknown source and it analyses the perception of individualism by those who are uneducated. When looked at unbiased, individualism is not a negative ideology. The writer appears to be frustrated with those who do not understand this principle. This is evident by the way he or she mocks those who do not understand individualism by calling them ignorant.. They also attempt to justify the ideology using diverse interpretations such as "I will not sacrifice myself to anyone–nor sacrifice anyone to myself" and "I will not rule nor be ruled". The speaker attempts to deconstruct the preconceived notion of individualism and replace it with one of prosperity and self–reliance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the views may not be in line with individuality, there are still some aspects of this ideology. If in an ant colony, One individual feels like they are more important than the others it will leave for chaos. However you also can not treat individuals as though they are nothing. You must be careful not to promote enough individualism so that the ideology spreads, but also be sure to provide enough so that each individual feels important. • 4. Individualism In America When asked the question, "How is Individualism as a value in the United States compared to other democracies." one can produce many answers. But, the most logical reason by far is due to the heightened opportunities for Americans to better themselves as opposed to other democracies. In Figure 1.3, the value of individualism in America versus foreign democracies is statistically, and very clearly, depicted in its favor. One reason being is that individualism is highly dependant on the government giving the people the tools needed "to achieve on their own, and that everyone should be given the same opportunity to achieve success." America was built on opportunity, and this has been proven time and time again throughout history. Rather it be by supporting capitalism and free enterprise, or allowing both natives and immigrants to obtain an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Upon granting citizenship to all persons in the United states, the government created an environment in which anyone can be a part of something greater. Any worker who is given fair opportunity, free land, and rights far greater than their old country will be more than willing to go to war for said country. This creates a strong military, a strong sense of nationality, and another reason for Americans to support and value individualism. Without the governments constant efforts to direct power away from the government and into its peoples hands, i doubt our country would be as strong and individually based as it would today. 'Individualism In Ayn Rand's Anthem' "Individualism is the idea that the individual's life belongs to him and that he has an inalienable right to live as he sees fit, to act on his own judgement, to keep and use the product of his effort, and to pursue the causes of his choosing." My take on individualism, is basically that we can control ourselves, we can do what we want with restrictions to keep those that stand by us safe. Individualism is a way of a society. Now, on the other hand there is collectivism, "the idea that the individual's life belongs not to him but to the group or society of which he is merely a part of has no rights, and that he must sacrifice his values and goals for the group's greater good." Individualism as an American Cultural Value Individualism as an American Cultural Value Individualism is often viewed as a positive trait in America, suggesting a certain level of personal confidence. American society tends to reward independent thinkers and those who decide autonomously. To this end, individuality has become a value in many American homes. Although individualism is widely received and respected in American culture, it is not as well respected in other cultures. The connotation of individuality in America is that of being strong and confident yet many Americans struggle with loneliness because they have been taught to do for themselves, think for themselves, and to stand on their own two feet. While I believe that some of the intents of individualism can be respected and do contribute to many positive aspects of American life, I do not believe that we as Americans should rely so much on the value of individuality. It has been said, it takes a village to raise a child, and Asian culture has grasped this concept of community. I must say that I agree with Dr. Sponsel, "individualism as one of the dominant values in American culture is expressed in many ways" (425). If you asked most Americans what the cultural values in the U.S. are, you might get some blank stares, or a statement of some basic beliefs. The question may seem simple, but the answer is quite complex. In a society as highly diverse as the United States, individualism towers over everything else. Works Cited Natadecha–Sponsel, Poranee. The government are the individuals that are suppose to protect our values, and make us feel safe. Privacy is no longer a guarantee, and it can be taken away at any time. Throughout the pieces Society and Solitude, What to the Slave is The Fourth of July, and The Snowden Files. Many different examples of loss of privacy and the loss of the basic components of our society have taken place. In these pieces three different individuals Emerson, Douglass, and Snowden show how the effect of society, and the influence of the government has impacted AmericanIndividualism. Society and Solitude written by Ralph Waldo Emersonstates what society means to him. Emerson states, " To be a member of society is to be a conformist, and this makes self reliance impossible." (Emerson paragraph 2)This quote explains that Emerson believes that to live in our society you have to go with the normal. He states that society makes it hard to come up with your own ideas or opinions. Emerson emphasizes that "It is so easy with the great to be great; so easy to come up with an existing standard." • 9. Individualism And Individualism Individualism is a core value of American culture. It has been influencing all the fields of society, economics, politics and culture. It has played an immense and extensive effect to shape the character and mindset of the American nation. In the colonial period of 1607 – 1776, these Europeans had come to a new land to find new opportunity. The Colonists knew nothing but the rule and culture of England, thus bringing traits of it into their new society in the New World. They did not have a keep grip on societal development until people started to speak up about new ideas and meanings of life. But they feared from straying from the past traditions of England because of a possible chance that England would see that they were not able to thrive and settle in this new place. Thus, when different opinions, ideas, or anything opposing current societal ways, it was to be banished, killed, or in some way rid of before society was able to change in any way other than what the entire group of the community wanted. This time focused on groups of people and the entire population's views and conformity rather than the individual's beliefs and principles. The rationalism period between 1750 and 1800 focused on major changes in society especially through religion and government life. Acts and plans imposed by the British government enabled Americans to realize the lack of true freedom and liberty they had being under control of England. This era sparked numerous new mindsets and attitudes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Hellenostic Individualism Vs Hellenistic Individualism In 323 B.C., the Hellenic Humanistic civilization came to an end, and Hellenistic individualism was born. Hellenistic individualism was everything that Hellenic Greece was not. This new time period would be described as "Greekish" because it was not purely Greek in culture (Humanities, 83). Before the Individualistic era began, the civilization was united in language, philosophy and religion, having a strong historical impact that connected them. Hellenistic individualism was created in a time of loneliness and isolation. When the polis were replaced, individualism emerged, because people were searching for continuity, they were searching for identity through the individual (Humanities, 91). I will be contrasting the different viewpoints from Hellenic Age and the Hellenistic Age; focusing on the philosophy of Aristotle, the philosophy of Epicurus and the new art form. The Hellenistic Greek culture is different starting with the shift of the polis to the cities. The new era was a blend of past ideas from the East and West (Messner 10–27–17). Some of these ideas were building on the ideas of the polis, but that goal was not able to be succeeded. For many reasons being, the new state was bigger, diverse and did not have an equal leadership balance (Messner 10–27–17). This resulted in a completely new era where people began to have new perspectives that they did not have before. Their perspective on philosophy, which was heavily impacted by Aristotle, took a huge turn. Unlike ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cloning & Individualism Results May Vary: Adam Phillips's Theory of Cloning and The Paradoxical Apotheosis of Individualism Adam Phillips's essay "Sameness Is All" takes the form of a dialogue with two children to introduce the fantasy of cloning in which everyone is identical. However, Phillip remains mindful that such fantasy of physical or psychological sameness is implausible as everyone is different – even clones. In a collectivist culture, the interest of the group prevails over the interest of the individual. A collectivist's values and beliefs are consistent with and reflect those of the in–group. Moreover, a collectivist's association with his or her in–groups may last a lifetime. In many collectivistic cultures, the primary value is harmony with others. Triandis observes that because group harmony is so highly valued, obedience to, and compliance with, in–group pressures is routine. One's behavior is role based, and deviations from the prescribed role are discouraged and often negatively sanctioned. A person's behavior is guided more by shame than by personal guilt. A collectivist who stands out from the group disrupts the harmony and may be punished. Most collectivistic cultures value social reciprocity, obligation, dependence, and obedience. But by far, the primary value stressed by many collectivistic cultures is harmony. Traiandis believes that collectivism is based on the tenet that collaboration and cooperation ultimately lead to survival. Both collaboration and cooperation require obedience and harmony, which is typically managed and coordinated by someone in charge, such as an authority. Authority, or one's rank in the group, is a salient feature of many collectivistic cultures. Collectivists tend to see each other in terms of hierarchically ranks roles, not as individuals. It exemplifies the habit or principle of being solely independent as well as self–reliant. Having individuality creates a boundary within a single person. During the pre–14th century, many people believed that individuality was a very important aspect in their community. This method describes a type of social idea in which an individual favors freedom of action for other individuals over both collective and formal control. The development of one's personality and the role of fully evolved individualism were known to have access for the men and women of that time to express the gratitude of self–reliance and independency. • 21. Importance Of Individualism In past society, such as the Incan empire or Chinese dynasties, an individual's identity and rights were in the hands of their country and rulers. Recent emergence of the individual has flourished into the West, with ideas such as democracy and liberalism. Is focusing solely on the individual, however, the right step toward creating a just and prosperous society? While individualism is beneficial to the individual, the blatant disregard for others' and unpredictability of consequences makes individualism as inviable method towards creating a prosperous and peaceful society. In short, the principle of individualism is to put one's self–interests and concerns as the highest priority, above society or a collective group's concerns. All actions are done solely for the best interest of the individual. Contrastingly, collectivism acts on the considerations and approval of the others or of one's respective group. One must consider the well–being or opinions of others for the consequences of one's actions. Many people may think of individualism as being selfish, of only doing things for the benefit of oneself. While individualism puts oneself as above any groups, the philosophy is more concerned with freedom and independence from any group. An individualist wants freedom for all, and lives in society for the benefit of themselves rather than others. In this way, individualists have a stronger sense of personal identity, and are less likely to accept unbalanced power structures and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the very start of the novel of The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne was put into trouble because of how she committed adultery. Michael Tocqueville Individualism "I did not encounter a citizen in America so poor that he did not cast a glance of hope and longing on the enjoyments of the rich and whose imagination was not seized in advance by the goods that fate was obstinately refusing him.1" This particular quote, from Democracy in America, speaks in regard to every American. Personally I believe that this quote does define what an, "American," is. We as a society do not give up, that is how the revolution began and it leads to one of the most powerful nations today. America is a proud nation, Tocqueville saw this and took note of it. He saw that many people had to complete tasks on their own, or prove that they were worthy in a way to feed their own egos. Despite this the citizens are also quite kind, generous and accepting of each other. This is shown throughout the whole community, in the novella. One of the most well–known topics throughout Tocqueville's writings is the individualistic and materialistic quality America has as a whole. According to himindividualism and materialism stem from equality. Lastly, the women in America add to the characteristics of each person, not just of each person, but to America as a whole by showing the most well–known aspect of Americans, equality. In Canada we are a mostly collective country especially next to the states. We have universal health care which widely helps out people who wouldn't otherwise be able to see a doctor or dentist without it. If the government helps people out then the standard of living would increase. Poverty could be diminished, health problems could be cured, and people would be able to afford leisurely activities putting money back into the government to help others out. Health care would be free and widely available to all to use. No having to pay for expensive prescriptions and doctors visits cutting back on the spread of diseases and sick people. Public property is used and is managed by a collective to benefit everyone in the community. All kids can go to school no matter their parents financial state giving them a chance to finish and go on to post secondary and get a good paying job. Individualism Individualism TShifting to a more contemporary lense, Libertarian's ultimate priority of individual rights has evolved in present day America into a set of supplementary values called individualism. Although this principle is never mentioned in Hospers paper, his positions stated on personal liberties and self–preservation serve as the foundation for this idea, which extends these rights to be applicable as a lifestyle where every decision is made strictly for someone's own personal benefit. (Boaz) Unsurprisingly, individualism also entails a resistance to all type of restrictive measures by authoritative powers, especially the obligation to provide assistance to another citizen financially or otherwise. (Boaz) In the Libertarian view, nobody should be forced to even tell someone "the time of day if requested" against their will. (Hospers, 331) In this sense, Individualism can be seen as the active exercise one's individual liberties. Furthermore, according to David Boaz of the Libertarian think tank The Cato Institute, individualism also gives a person the power to flourish on their own terms, and can also provide a sense of "dignity", especially to underrepresented groups. (Boaz) Whether or not by design, this Libertarian emphasis on individualism is a theme that has become heavily ingrained into contemporary American life as the culture, economics, and politics of the country all have elements of this value. It is, however, ironic that the noisy, complicated government of Thoreau's time had only a fraction of the bureaucracy of the government we have today. This illuminates the extent to which modern society, let alone current day society, contrasts the natural locus of human interaction. – 69 words This sentiment correlates with the massive amount of incarceration in the U.S. for often minor crimes. The idea that the law is synonymous with morality is preposterous, and alludes to a supposition that everyone's morals are the same. Personally, the law should only protect individual rights by punishing acts by individuals that encroach upon the rights of others. Since everyone shares the same desire to free himself from the tyranny of his neighbor, such a policy would vastly reduce the amount of incarceration and protect to an even greater extent individual liberties. – 93 words Thoreau's allusion to soldiers in the Mexican war is comparable to 21st century military decisions. • 33. The Importance Of Individualism Many people look at their government and how it affects them on a day to day basis but do not see what it does to everyone at once. The government's total authority over a country can vary from place to place, but they all make laws and rules that constrict their citizens in some way. Sometimes those laws can either have positive or negative consequences, which is dependent on the government's views on how to run the country. Those consequences lead the country into one of two categories – individual or collective. The government sets boundaries for individualism because of the laws they put in place for its citizens, which ties them to either side of the spectrum of individuality and conformity. Initially, understanding the scale of individualism and collectivism is important when trying to relate it to a government and its effects on people. Looking at this in a very broad manner doesn't always clearly define it, however. In an article written by Carrie Rothstein–Fisch, this is explained through the education system. "In the United States, a country known for its history of 'rugged individualism', the dominant values include independence, self–reliance, individual achievement, and cognitive development." She goes on to add that migrant students from collectivist countries have a difficult time adjusting. In this example, opposing ends of the spectrum meet, which fuses them together and creates a middle ground. To elaborate, the primary individualistic teachings of the ... During the pre–14th century, many people believed that individuality was a very important aspect in their community. These are not considered to be ideal types in his belief but they can be measured in social situations (Walsh, 27/09/16, s. 6–8). It is within all of these four extreme types that suicide rates are the highest. The first of these is named egoistic suicide. According to Durkheim, egoistic suicide occurs when an individual is not integrated or invested in society at all, their life is overly individualistic. This form of suicide and individuality can be associated with the term organic solidarity. Organic solidarity is used in more modern, industrialized organized societies where the individual starts to see themselves as unique and the focal point of importance rather than being connected to this large conglomerate of people. An egoistic person does not affiliate strongly with any form of institution that would offer stability or community in their life. An individualistic community encourages a person to make his/her own choices; moreover, one would be less concerned about the "we" and more concerned about the "I". This lowers conformity levels, because each person is willing to do what he/she wants and is more concerned about self–surival than harmony in the community. A strength of this study could be participant variability because it eliminates the possibility of this behavior only being limited to one type of person/community. Accordingly, a limitation could be the lack of ecological validity (one will not be asked to identify the length of a line in real life), and the multitude of confounding variables including the time and place, which could influence the results. Overall, the study demonstrates how individualism affects behavior, since a person who demonstrates indivdualistic behavior would exhibit less conformity, as seen above. In a collectivist society, the individual is integrated into a tightly knit society that offers protection and support.
