The design proposal seeks to incorporate fully the differences in height,
starting from the inside of the complex and the necessary spaces in it. The
building is fully integrated into the topography and seems like a natural
continuation of the soil. We made, also, an attempt to separate the public
spaces from the private ones, by using some zones.
9
•
The facilities of the feature are:
reception - lobby, recreation
areas, such as cafeteria and
restaurant and also, separately
placed buildings with 40 rooms
and spaces as baths, massage
rooms, hot tubs, fitness center,
and indoor and outdoor pools.
The building is of concrete
skeleton and some exterior and
interior walls are composed of
stone. Apart from the stone, it is
used visible concrete and wood,
particularly in the squares and
terraces linking the buildings
together.
An observation deck is projected
outwards, from the side of the
rooms. It allows the visitors to
have a different experience on
appreciating the panoramic view
of the natural surrounding.

From these drawings- sections along the
two sides of the plot, we fully understand
the challenge that we faced in order to
place the buildings on the particular
ground. We wish for a direct access from
the road, so we chose το make a gradual
transition to the lower point of the
composition, by creating squares. In
addition, we wanted the view of the city
and the island across, to be visible from all
aspects of the land.

I intended the site to become a kind of platform to devise
structures and also the physical context for analysis,
programming, and design of special facilities. A key aim of the
design studio, consists the concept of an holistic integration of
architecture into the specific natural environment associated
with the existence of thermal mineral springs in the area.
Facilities are: thermal spa facilities, spa, etc. along with
accommodation and ancillary facilities and there are many
paths and passages, with o good relationship with the landscape
that guide to the facilities of the composition
The studio course focuses on a landscape, rich in thermal
mineral springs, at a remote mountainous area of the Prefecture
of Xanthi, near the borders between Greece and Bulgaria. The
study area is on the verge of a small settlement, a place with
important geographical and historical particularities.
14
•My first attempt was to incorporate the composition to the landscape, without damaging the
historical and geographical value of the area.
•Then I wished to separate the public from the private uses. That was accomplished with the use
of a stone wall, which separates the plot in the middle.
•Finally, I tried to arrange the buildings so as the view to be visible from every side of the
composition, by preserving the slope.

The main materials I used were the followings:
•Deck, which was used especially for the paths and the squares
that link the various buildings together
•stone, for some walls that define the routes that lead to the
buildings
•Visible concrete, that fits with the landscape
•Large glass surfaces, that allow the view to the landscape,
where this is necessary
An attempt for natural lighting was also made, by creating
skylights that allow the sun light enter into the buildings

The study area is located near the center of Kavala; it constitutes part
of the south sea-front of the city, forming a peculiar junction with the
urban fabric. In detail, we deal with a site forming part of the former
port facilities. In its current state, the site is characterized by a total
absence of design. The buildings situated in the area particularly being
auxiliary buildings and warehouses with the exception of a small
passenger station building. The area is typified by the vast concrete-
paved area that offers little incentive for the development of public
activities, despite of the fact that it being in close proximity to city
centre.
We chose the demolition of the majority of the building fabric from the
site, releasing the area for its redevelopment into a single public place,
at the same time, transforming it into an environment designed to be
used for cultural events, recreation, soft sporting activities, walking and
relaxation. The large oblong building situated at the water-front is
exempt from demolition. Particularly we manipulate the building
envelope and structure, reversing – revealing its key structural
components in order to reshape – transform it into an essentially
elevated public space
18
A 3
The study area is offered as a kind of a "platform" for the development
and introduction of structures and configurations; the main purpose
being the redesign of the site, integrating walking paths and areas for
cultural and leisure uses in the city. In this context, the key design
challenges were the restoration of the city's relationship with the sea,
the visual and functional connection of the study area with the urban
fabric, and ultimately the formation of a new identity for the area of
study.
We considered a key element the existence of the sea (southerly of the
building), so we attempted the entrance of the sea into the building . In
addition, the view of the sea is visible from every aspect of the building.
Very important for us was the existence of a historical wall made from
stone. We tried to highlight this wall towards our composition. We
achieved this fact, by creating a suitable shaped area, full of trees and
plants, with football, basketball and tennis fields. This area is suitable
for ramble and marveling at the view of the sea.
The materials we chose to use are concrete, stone and wood- deck and
are totally incorporated to the landscape.

The purpose of the museum is not only the recording and
investigation of historical path but also maintaining the city's
historical memory, and the review is considered saying its current
identity and future development. Through a museological approach
we cover the past, present and future of the city and the museum is
intended to serve as a living knowledge pole, information, awareness
and reflection
It was difficult to place the building into the plot, because it is located
in the center of the city. Alongside, a museum requires quiet, so we
chose to create a ‘backside’ to the main roads of the city and open to
the square eastward of the plot.

A 4
We firstly attempted an introvert in
our composition, so we chose to make
a central square. Around this square,
on the first level are the followings: a
reception hall, appropriately
constructed for a large number of
people, a spacious area for temporary
exhibitions, a lecture room, a part from
the room with the permanent
exhibitions and three labs. On the
second floor we organized the other
part of the room with the permanent
exhibitions, a library, a room with
educational programs and a café. In the
basement there are five storage rooms
and parking lot for the museum’s
personnel.
The building is of concrete skeleton
and it is plastered. We chose to color
red some walls in order to attract the
passenger’s attention.
In conclusion, there are not large glass
surfaces, but only small breakthroughs
on the ceiling and some skylights.
