2. The aim of TRANSROMANICA is to emphasize the common
historical background and promote sustainable development of
regions and connections among them on the basis of cultural tourism
or common European heritage from the Romanesque period.
3. The route was established during the period from 2003 to 2006.
In the programme TRANSROMANICA all the fundamental
principles of the Council of Europe coexist: human rights, cultural
democracy, cultural diversity and identity, dialogue, mutual
exchange and enrichment across boundaries and centuries.
In 2007 the title of "Major Cultural Route" of the Council of Europe
was awarded to TRANSROMANICA.
4. TRANSROMANICA is focused on the common cultural heritage of
Europe and represents the Romanesque art and architecture of 8
European countries. It combines 12 member regions in:

• Italy
• Portugal
• Romania
• Serbia
• Spain
5. SOME FACTS ABOUT MIDDLE AGES
AND ROMANESQUE ART….
In the XI century the Romanesque style began to spread throughout Europe
and it was the first common language of the old continent.
The Romanesque style was inspired by Roman and early Christian tradition.
The church was accepted as social and economic authority and the main moral.
The most common buildings were castles, monasteries and temples, monastic
architecture gained its popularity.
The origin of Europe is in the Middle Ages. It incorporated values that united
the continent and reflect the origins of today`s Europe: unity in diversity.
6. PERSONALITIES
The «Walk of Canossa» - the trek of German king Henry
IV from Speyer (Germany) to the fortress of Canossa
(Italy). This route is connected with the journey that the
king Henry IV took to Canossa, where he asked about the
end of his excommunication.
Another great personality is the emperor Otto the Great.
Otto was the most influentional character during the 10th
century. Otto the Great is said to be one of the founders of
the Holy Roman Empire.
In the 11th century Hemma von Gurk devoted her life to God,
helped the poor and founded several religious houses. In Gurk,
Emma built a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which later
became Gurk Cathedral. People today can follow the Hemma-
Pilgerweg running from Carinthia to Slovenia.
