Looking at my preliminary task I have realized the front cover there looks very
unprofessional, firstly because of the layout; the writing is scattered around the
whole page and isn’t in line whereas my music magazine has carefully aligned text.
In the college magazine there are about 8 different fonts, at first I wanted to
use lots of fonts for my magazine but I realized it looks very messy and some
fonts are harder to read so it seems as though different fonts are used to attract more
attention to certain teasers but that is not the case.
In the music magazine I only used 3 different fonts, 1 font for all the teasers and date,
one for the offer (so it doesn’t look like a teaser) and one for the masthead
because it would just look funny if the teaser fonts were the same as the masthead.
The masthead size is awful in the college magazine, from far it can be mistaken for a
                                   teaser because of its size.
Another massive difference is the photograph, in the college magazine the subject
only fills up about a sixth of the page, it is supposed to be a college magazine so the
locker should be visible but here the ceiling takes up too much space.
I used a professional camera in the studio to take the photo for the music magazine
(Nikon D7000 16 million megapixel), also I used polyboards and a studio flash.
Here my subject is wearing a tie around her head to present a funky R&B style, also
the tie colour is similar to the hair colour and the font which brings it out all
                                           together.
I learnt about psychological pricing which means if you put a 99 before a certain
amount of pounds it will seem less.
89p here doesn’t really work in my opinion but 2.49 would seem like less than 2.50 so
it shows I have learnt about psychological pricing.
I have now a better understanding of how to use Photoshop, I never knew how to
work with layers in Photoshop but now I know that you have to switch the layers
around for a layer to be beneath others or on top.
I also learnt how to use InDesign more and how to apply colours to text.
The difference can be seen here
between the preliminary task
contents and the real one.
The above one lacks detail but
the one beneath has more
details, short descriptions about
articles.
Also some words are in colour
and a bigger font than the
writing next to it, this is so the
reader can get interested in the
article just by seeing the word
such as ‘shocker’
The above doesn’t has mainly
images I didn’t take however my
magazine has original
photographs.
Looking at the two it is obvious I
didn't know how to use indesign
but soon I learnt how to add
colour, how to rotate images
(the black lines were images I
had to rotate since the lines
indesign had to offer were poor
quality)
