Benefits Of Being A Patient
Consider the "Excluded Services" section and the "Payment/Premium" section from your own health insurance contract. Which one is easier to
understand? In plain English, discuss what each one means to you as a patient.
Excluded services are services the healthcare plan does not cover resulting in out of pocket costs. Payment/Premium is the payment my employer or I
pay for healthcare coverage. The excluded services are easier to understand because they are listed in our policy which services are excluded. For
example, cosmetic surgery/enhancements are not covered under my healthcare policy except if the cosmetic surgery is found to be medically necessary.

In my personal experiences with my health insurance, I have been fortunate to not have any surprises. When I was covered under my parents, I had
the benefit of two insurances which would cover the balance payments for any procedures that I had. During my senior year in undergraduate, I
developed tonsillitis and spiked a fever. I was out of state and was confused on what to do. I called my mom and she told me to go to the emergency
room with my insurance cards and receive treatment. I went to the hospital and was treated, filled my prescriptions and went home to recover. I do not
recall any outstanding bills from the incident and I assumed because my insurances covered the visit.

unsubsidized care costs. Researchers suggest that out–of–pocket medical expenses have tripled for the average American family since 2001(Girod,
2016). Other studies indicate that the growth rate of these costs is double the annual income rate for U.S. individuals and families. Still, some argue
that out–of–pocket medical costs are appropriate considering healthcare utilization (Cutler, 2004). This paper addresses the arguments supporting and
refuting the stance that out–of–pocket medical expenses are too high.
Why out–of–pocket costs are too high
Insurance purchased through federal marketplace exchanges contain high deductibles and high co–pays, causing high out–of–pocket costs. The
introduction of insurance exchanges, coupled with the financial penalties of the individual mandate, added approximately 11 million individuals and
families to the healthcare market–place (Sun, 2016). The exchanges allow individuals to shop for insurance plans that contain varying levels of

Indemnity health plans run on a retrospective payment system. A member has a monthly premium. Co–pays and a deductible. Upon visits the provider
submits claims for services rendered to the insurance company, upon which the insurance company pays their part and the member is billed for the

With indemnity plans employers deduct the monthly premium from payroll of each employee on the plan. Both the member and the insurance
