The Goal Of Sports And Sports Collapses
Introduction: The goal in sports is to win. In every game there is a winner. But sometimes, that
winner is unexpected. A team who is winning by a lot of points or wins in a series should win the
game. But that doesn't alway happen. Every team somehow collapses or 'chokes' at one time or
another. All fans have to deal with the heartbreak of their team losing. Here are the worst blown
leads and sports collapses according to us. Yankees vs Red Sox 2004 Yankees had a 3–0 lead in the
2004 American League Championship Series against the Red Sox. The Yankees were looking like
they would defeat their rival on their biggest stage. The Red Sox at that point hadn't won a
championship for 86 years. It looked like the Curse of the Bambino would have ... Show more

But then, the Warriors won a close game four with the score 108 to 99. The Cavaliers were down 3–
1. The odds very slim nobody believed in the Cavs. Entering Game 5 with their heads held low, they
beat the Warriors. That gave them a spark that they needed. In game six the same thing happened
they beat them again and people were left with their jaws dropped. Entering game seven at Oracle
Arena, the Warriors stadium, with tickets selling at $2,800 a seat, Stephen Curry faced off with
Lebron James. When the 1st quarter ended, the Cavaliers lead by one point. At halftime, the
Warriors had stolen the lead by seven. The third quarter combined for 60 points, 33 by the Cavaliers
and 27 by the Warriors. The 4th quarter was one of the most thrilling quarters of basketball ever.
Lebron James had a huge block on Andre Iguodala to save two points and Kyrie Irving the starting
point guard drained a three in Curry's face to call game. The Cavaliers had completed the comeback
with a 93–89 win over the Golden State Warriors. This sent a shockwave through the country, with a
lot of trash talk and memes. This will go down as the most speculated loss in the NBA playoffs.

two teams playing in the game were the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons. The leader

Compare And Contrast Yerk Giants And Boston Red Sox
With the World series right around the corner, I thought it'd be a good time to share two amazing
World Series that many people don't know about.
1912––The New York Giants and Boston Red sox were tied in the 8th game of the World Series.
Both teams won 3 games and this game would decide who would win the ninth World Series.Tied in
the 10th inning, Fred Merkle, who had blown a pennant for the Giants four years earlier, got his
revenge by hitting a single in a go–ahead run. It was 2–1 for in favor of the Giants going into the
bottom of the 10th. Clyde Wood, the first batter to the plate, hit an easy fly ball into right field.
However, Fred Snodgrass, the right fielder, missed it, and Wood ended up on second base with
nobody out. Snodgrass made a great catch on the next batter, but Wood advanced to third base. Next,
Steve Yerkes walked and put players on 1st and third. Tris Speaker lined a base hit to tie the game.
Yerkes advanced to third and Speaker was on 1st with only one out. The 17,000 fans erupted with
glee. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They won the American League by two games over the Yankees, sending them to the World Series
for the first time. There they would face the New York Giants, a team that had won two out of the
last three MLB championships. Walter Johnson pitched two of the first six games and lost both
them. Thankfully for him, his team was more successful and won three out of the four games that
Johnson didn't start. The Series was tied 3–3, and game seven would be held at Griffith Stadium on
October 10th 1924. Johnson didn't start the game but came in with the game tied in the ninth inning.
"The Big Train" pitched a scoreless 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th. Finally, the Senators finally broke the
tie. Muddy Ruehl scored on a single by Earl McNeely, and Washington won the game 4–3 in their
first World Series victory. There were tears in Walter Johnson's eyes. To this day, it was the only
baseball championship that Washington has ever

Red Sox Case Study
For Price, Red Sox, the price is right
An elite starting pitcher will call Fenway Park his home next season for the first time since Jon
Lester was traded to Oakland at the deadline in 2014. The Red Sox signed 30 year old lefty David
Price to a 7–year, $217 million contract this past Tuesday. Price is one of the top starting pitchers in
baseball. He won the 2012 American League Cy Young award after going 20–5 in the regular
season. Boston won the David Price sweepstakes after months of talk about where he would land.
Besides Boston, it is reported that Price was very interested in signing with either the Cubs,
Cardinals, or the team he played for during part of the 2015 season, the Blue Jays.
Price will undoubtedly improve the Red Sox struggling pitching staff, one that finished the season
with a collective 4.39 earned run average and surrendered 178 home runs, the seventh most in the
MLB. Price finished his 2015 campaign with an 18–5 record and a 2.45 ERA, but his most
astonishing numbers came from the second half of the season after he was traded from the Detroit
Tigers to the Toronto Blue Jays. After the trade he went 9–1 with a 2.30 ERA. Even more
astonishing are his numbers at Fenway Park, something that has Red Sox Nation elated. Over his
career, Price has amounted a 6–1 record with a cool 1.95 ERA at America's most beloved ballpark.

In the 2013 American League Division Series between Boston and Tampa Bay, Price criticized Red
Sox slugger David Ortiz for the way he ran the bases after hitting a homerun off of him. The Red
Sox went on to win the World Series, but the bitterness carried on into the 2014 season. In a game
early in the season, Price hit Ortiz with a pitch that started a virtual war between two teams. After
that game, Ortiz expressed his frustration with Price. "It's on. Next time I see (Price), he better put
his gloves on. I have no respect for him

Baseball Memoir Essay
Ever since I could remember, I have always had a great interest and love for the game of baseball.
As a kid, I would spend countless hours in the backyard with my grandfather, or even by myself,
tossing, hitting and fielding a baseball. When I wasn't in the yard pretending to be Nomar
Garciaparra I would watch the Boston Red Sox games on TV with my Grandfather. Even in my
early adolescence, as impatient as most are, I had the patience to sit there and watch the Sox.With
my eyes glued to the screen with a look of anticipation fixed on my face ready to mimic my
grandfather with the excitement of a home run hit or the frustration of Mo–Vaughn striking out. Call
me crazy, but I was addicted, even as a young boy, to Boston Red Sox baseball. ... Show more

Wanting nothing to do with baseball, I stopped playing all together and even stopped watching the
Sox. Over the next couple years, I had no interest in anything that had to do with baseball or the Red
Sox as it would remind me ever so much of my grandfather who I had experienced so much of this
game with. Skateboarding became my main focus, giving up all my skills I had acquired in my
youth as a ball player, missing the most crucial years of baseball development as a pre–teen. Once in
a while I would hear from old coaches, but still had no interest. In October of 2003, I decided I
would watch the Red Sox once again considering they were in the playoffs, only to be heartbroken
by their dramatic extra inning loss to the Yankees in the American League Championship Series.
Once again, I could only think of my grandfather who I had such an attachment with over the Red
Sox and the game of baseball. The following spring, the baseball season started again, but I still
chose not to watch the Sox or play any baseball whatsoever, that is until they made the post season
once again. I decided to pay attention and the Sox advanced to the next round, to play the Yankees
once again in the ALCS. Being so heartbroken from the year before, I didn't know what to expect,
and sure enough, I found myself in the same position, the Sox down three games to none in the best
of a seven game series, I had no faith. My father decided to go out and surprise me with tickets to

Baseball Player: Babe Ruth
abe Ruth life and death in baseball rofessional baseball player Babe Ruth was born George Herman
Ruth Jr. on February 6, 1895, in Baltimore, Maryland. Ruth was raised in a poor waterfront
neighborhood in Baltimore, where his parents, Kate Schamberger–Ruth and George Herman Ruth
Sr., owned a tavern. Ruth was one of eight children born to the couple, and one of only two that
survived infancy. At the age of 7, the trouble–making Ruth became too much of a handful for his
busy parents. Routinely caught wandering the dockyards, drinking, chewing tobacco and taunting
local police officers, his parents finally decided he needed more discipline than they could give him.

Shane Victorino– A legend that The Boston Red Sox will never forget. October 19, 2013, Victorino
hit a go–ahead grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning, over the Green Monster, in game 6 of
the ALCS. The grand slam put the Red Sox up 5–2 over the Detroit Tigers, and sent the Red Sox to
the World Series, ultimately leading to their Boston Strong win
Victorino was traded along with cash considerations to the Los Angeles Angels for infielder Josh

Jackie Robinson And The Civil Rights Movement
In the pre–dawn of the Civil Rights Movement, the 1940s were rife with racial tension. Nearly all
public institutions were segregated. Libraries, schools, transportation, the armed forces. Sports
teams were just as rigorously divided into two sects––the Negro leagues and the major leagues.
There was no question about which division a black man would play for. Nobody dared cross the rift
between whites and blacks; they were too afraid. Eventually, however, all it took was one man to
begin breaking down the barrier. Jackie Robinson's time in baseball's major leagues broke color
lines and brought about significant social changes both on and off the field. Jack Roosevelt
Robinson was born on January 31, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia. His parents, Mallie and Jerry Robinson,
were from poor sharecropping families and had four other children––Willa Mae, Edgar, Frank, and
Matthew "Mack" (who later became a silver medalist at the 1936 Summer Olympics). When Jackie,
the youngest, was barely one year old, his father left the family. Mallie Robinson moved her
children from Cairo to a relatively poor neighborhood in Pasadena, California. Jackie Robinson was
often excluded from activities and spent a short time in a gang (he was persuaded to abandon it by a
friend). In 1935, Robinson was enrolled at John Muir High School, where he was inspired by his
athletic older brothers to play sports. Soon he was playing at varsity level in many events, including
football, baseball, and track and field. He

Payton's Babe Ruth
Is it a bird... is it a plane... it's a baseball! The game of baseball was invented by a person by the
name of Abner Doubleday in 1839. Since then, baseball has become competitive, exciting and full
of memorable moments. Baseball is one of America's most popular sports. It takes skilled players to
make the game entertaining and fun. Some skilled players include: Jackie Robinson, Ty Cobb,
Willie Mays, Lou Gehrig and Stan Musial. But none of these players are as good as Babe Ruth.
George Herman Ruth was born on February 6, 1895 in a small house in Baltimore, Maryland.
George grew up a bum, living on the streets of the Baltimore waterfront. George was a disrespectful
kid that always ran away from school. He also smoked and played pranks on people. One day, a man
named Brother Matthias saw George's energy and wanted to harness that energy for baseball.
Matthias could hit a baseball over the fence, using just one arm. This inspired George to play
baseball. One day in a baseball game, George was up to bat facing an inexperienced pitcher. George
started laughing and making fun of him. Matthias stopped George and told him, "If you think that
you can do better, let's see you go out there and pitch." The next inning, George went up to the
mound and pitched. He had no clue how to pitch but he threw harder than anyone in the league. A
minor league team's coach saw him play, and asked the young 19 year old to sign a contract with his
team! This would be the start of something great!

The Toughest Miracle In The History Of Sports
2004 ALCS: The Biggest Miracle in the History of Sports In the early to mid 2000's, baseball was
dominated by two Major League organizations: the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.
These two storied organizations have boasted a historic past, each possessing arguably the greatest
player the game has ever seen: Babe Ruth. Each of these clubs had hit their peak in the early 2000's,
and it set up for an epic clash in the 2004 American League Championship. The Yankees took an
early three games to none lead in the best of seven game series, and all hope had been lost
throughout the Red Sox fan base. But, the Red Sox were able to turn it around through a series of
improbable events, and finished the series with a win over the Yankees, four ... Show more content

Once the Red Sox went down 3–0, it was contemplated throughout the sports world that the task of
beating the Yankees once was daunting enough, much less beating them four times in a row. The
Red Sox faced that specific task in Game 4 of the series, the first of their do or die games. Going
into the bottom of the 9th inning, the Red Sox were down one run. (baseball–reference.com) (Source
B) The Red Sox tied the game, and the game went into extra innings. The Yankees closer, Mariano
Rivera, (considered best closer of all time) entered the game for the Yankees. The air came out of the
Red Sox fans, as it appeared it was all but over. But, leadoff hitter Kevin Millar drew a walk. He
was then pinch run for by Dave Roberts. Roberts stole 2nd base, barely beating the throw from
Yankees catcher Jorge Posada. Roberts was batted in, tying the game for the Red Sox and sending
the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the 12th inning, David Ortiz blasted the game–winning
home run to give the Red Sox the victory. In order for the Red Sox to win just one game against the
Yankees, they had to score a run off the best closer of all time, last an extra three innings without
losing to a high powered Yankee offense, and hit a game winning bomb in the bottom half of the last
inning. This is what it took for the Red Sox to win one game, much less take on the demoralizing
task of doing it three additional times. To beat a team such as the Yankees four times in a row, it
takes a great amount of luck, giving it status among the greatest sports

Descriptive Essay On People In Life
There are some people in life, that inspire you, while others can make it more exciting. But, there
are a few that can do both. Inspiration is the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel
something, especially to do something creative. The people you meet or see in life that can do both
seem to influence your very own decisions. They produce unwavering emotions and never seem to
concede. These people are the true exemplars of the aphorism, "You only live once." These people
know how to fight for their lives, or hold back their emotions for the greater good of others.
Shannon Cummings, Rick Porcello, and Devin/Jason Mccourty are my illustrations of people that
live life to the fullest and try to help others that aren't able to do the same on their own. They are
honest when they need to be, but they know when to tell a white lie to keep from hurting others.
These people are philanthropists, donating their time, money, or energy to help others. They are
people that are stoic, keeping their emotions to themselves when they are down, which allows others
to do the same. Some of them are underdogs in their areas of expertise, but they defy expectations
regularly. They are people that overcome many challenges in their way throughout life. These
people share the same characteristics as many others in the world, but it is how they use them that
makes them extraordinary. It's not the hand you're dealt that wins the game, it's how you play the
hand you're dealt and overcome

Sportsmanship Vs Sportsmanship
There is much debate in our current athletic culture on sportsmanship and gamesmanship. Stories of
scandals seem to make the news headlines almost weekly in college and professional athletics. In
fact, a story just broke about the Boston Red Sox using an apple watch to steal signs from the New
York Yankees (Olney, 2017). Stealing signs has always been part of baseball but using technology is
prohibited. There are numerous other examples of athletic teams bending the rules or completely
breaking the rules in order to gain a competitive advantage.
Sportsmanship is an important part of sports because it ensures that competitors are competing in a
fair and ethical manner. According to Epstein (2016), "The ethics of sports was once fairness.
Fairness meant not taking undue advantage; if anything, it meant allowing such advantages as
chance turned up to go to one's opponent." The Illinois High School Association's slogan for
sportsmanship is, "Do What's Right!" ("Do What's Right"). According to the IHSA athletes and
coaches should, "Represent their school and community favorably through positive interaction with
opposing fans and players before, during, and after the competition" ("Do What's Right!"). Good
sportsmanship means that athletes, coaches, and fans, respect their opponent, the referees, and the
game. This means playing within the rules, accepting the judgment of the officials, and be humble
and gracious in both victory and defeat. It is easy to identify good or bad

Essay Major League Baseball´s Culture
Baseball is spread across the United States and has become a part of some cities culture. Cultures
stretch from the newer teams of the west and the old school teams of the east. There are teams that
have been around since baseball started and new teams that were made within the last 20 years.
Major League Baseball's culture differs across the United States depending on where you're located.
There are trends between cultures based on location and how long the team has been around. These
cultures are different in many, but all have a common similarity. All baseball cultures revolve around

To do that you have to go spend lots of money on free agents, like they are doing now. The way a
team builds itself changes the type of culture that surrounds a team. A team at the other end of the
spectrum is the St. Louis Cardinals. They have built their team through their farm system like I
mention earlier, also known as the minor leagues. Many of their players are "home grown" talent as
they call it and the fans are very close to their players, unlike the money driven stars, the fans feel
like the young players are growing up and their involved with it. An example of this is on the teams
Facebook page the team posted a thank you to two of their home grown stars that they traded away,
and the top comment reads this, "Freese will always be a cardinal in the hearts of true fans of
STL(St. Louis) baseball." The second highest comment posted is this, "Freese will always be the
homegrown talent. Best of luck to both of them in Anaheim." The cardinal fans love their players
and care about wining, but there is more to it to them, they feel a part of the growing of David
Freese and other players like him. Teams like the Cardinals, Yankees, and the Red Sox don't have to
worry too much about bringing in fans like small market teams. Teams that do have to try to get fans
to come to the games like the Tampa Bay Rays or the Seattle Mariners. The Rays

Quotes For Lord Capulet
Essay Outline
The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees play at least 22 games a year just against each
other, not including playoffs. They are also the largest rival baseball team of all times. Romeo and
Juliet could be portrayed using the Capulets as Boston and the Montagues as New York. At one of
the games between them taking place in Fenway Park, Romeo and Juliet meet and hit it off right
away. Although their rivals, they do not realize who they are until after the game. In my favorite
scene, Act 4 Scene 2, Lord Capulet plays a very important part by talking to Juliet about the
wedding with Paris.
I think that Lord Capulet is the most needed character in this scene because it is all based on his
inner attitude. When Juliet begs for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After her speech, he goes straight to business face. If I directed a play of this, then I would direct the
person playing Lord Capulet to walk around and talk to himself about random things like caterer,
flowers, place, etc... and then start talking about his rewards because, as it says above, all he cares
about is what is in it for him.
Staging is just one element in the theater genre, but it is a very important one. If I had the chance to
direct Romeo and Juliet in the modernized version I created, then the lights for Act 4 Scene 2 would
be bright, like fluorescent lights were everywhere. Even if Lord Capulet was not holding a phone
that lights up, we would need to signify that he is using one and what he is doing with it. That would
need it's own lighting. The camera angle if we ever filmed it would move from place to place. I
believe that it would start on Lord Capulet and then everyone else would answer while he is on his
phone. The camera when Juliet enters would be focused on her, maybe with her running into the
room where her father is. All of the actors need costumes to make the whole scene come alive. Lord
Capulet would be wearing a suit, black with a light blue undershirt and a red tie would be added to
this to make the audience believe that he had just come from work. The suit will also show that even
at home, Lord Capulet is all about the money.
Romeo and Juliet already has many modernized versions

Taking a Look at a Culture as an Outsider
1. Did this description provide an accurate description of customs and norms? Explain. The reading
did provide a description of the custom and norms, but I do not know how accurate it was. I have
not been to Costa Rica nor have I learned about the Nacirema, but I am certain that Latin American
cultures have a strong belief in the supernatural. I believe that the description was accurate. I would
however like to do more research before deciding how accurate the descriptions of the norms and
customs were. While the text mentions several rituals, I do not feel I fully understand them in their
entirety, but it did provide the reader with a bit of insight on the culture of the Nacirema. But I do
believe it does accurately state what the norms and customs are of the Nacirema. 2. How did the
description make the culture seem 'strange' or 'exotic?' The terms "exotic" and "strange" are ways in
which we describe things that we do not understand; exotic describes this reading best of all. The
idea that special potions and holy shrines protected someone from illness is a very interesting
concept and one commonly shared in Latin American communities. In Judeo–Christian society a lot
of households do not have shrines nor keep special potions within their homes. While the customs of
the Nacirema may seem "strange", the description given by Dr. Linton, describes time honored
traditions in a very respectful way, as to keep the text exotic rather than strange. Dr.

Persuasive Essay About Amby Burfoot
AMBY BURFOOT
Imagine for a moment, that you are at the end of your final year of Little League baseball in the late
1950's. Your idol, along with thousands of other youngsters back then, was number seven for the
New York Yankees – Mickey Mantle. You taught yourself to switch hit just like Mickey and you
have just finished your baseball season with the highest batting average in the entire league. In
addition, to add to the drama, your father is a staunch Boston Red Sox fan and would a few years

In addition, younger runners probably know him more for being associated with Runner's World

But, wanting to interview Amby was one thing. Actually doing so? Well, that took me a little while
to get that one done. Why?
Amby was always one of those athletes that you watched and were in awe of. He was a great runner,
he never came across as arrogant or obnoxious – whether in victory or in defeat, and he always
seemed very approachable – to everyone. In all the years that I knew him, I never heard a single
negative comment about him.
In retrospect, I guess my reasons for apprehension were based mainly on my belief that I didn't want
to bother him about something so trivial as my book. I couldn't have been more wrong.
One of the nice side benefits of being involved in running and coaching is the contact list of people
that you develop over time. On my list happens to be a coach at Hall High School in West Hartford,
Connecticut by the name of Jeff Billing, who just so happens to be Amby's ("favorite") nephew.

was doing a book and wanted to interview a bunch of people to find out about their past experiences
about running. I mentioned that I thought about asking his uncle for a few minutes of his

2004 MLB Wins Regression Essay
On Wednesday, October 27th 2004, the Curse of the Bambino was finally lifted off the City of
Boston and its long–suffering baseball fans (see Appendix A for more on the Curse). For the first
time in 86 years, the Boston Red Sox were the world champions of baseball.
There is no arguing that the 2004 Red Sox were a good team that played excellent baseball
throughout the season. The team was led not by talent cultivated through the Red Sox' farm system
but by high–priced, free–agent acquisitions such as Pedro Martinez, Manny Ramirez, Keith Foulke,
Curt Shilling and David Ortiz. The average age for a Red Sox team member was 31.1 years, the
oldest team average in the league. Additionally, the cumulative payroll for the 2004 Red Sox was the

After this analysis, I hope to determine which variables have the highest correlation to winning
baseball games for the 2004 season.
Major League Baseball is the only major professional sport that does not have a salary cap (the
maximum in total payroll that a team can pay its players). For example, the National Football
League has a salary cap for 2004 of about $75 million and the National Basketball Association has a
salary cap for 2004 of approximately $44 million. There are multiple reasons for a salary cap but
two of the underlying reasons are parity (equality) and competitiveness. It is assumed that without a
salary cap, large market teams such as New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago will be able to 'buy up'
all the good players leaving the small market cities such as Minneapolis, Cincinnati, and Phoenix
with the less–talented left–overs. Additionally, teams that win more games and make the playoffs
and World Series receive extra revenue from TV, thereby creating even more of a discrepancy if
large market teams have an advantage in winning more games and playing in the post–season.
In 1998, MLB Commission Bud Selig formed a panel to report on the economic conditions within
baseball. One of the findings of that panel was that team payrolls have become increasingly
disparate; the gap between "rich" and "poor" teams is not only wide, but it is growing. The effect,
according to the panel, is a dramatic decline in parity and

Personal Narrative Essay: Why Boston Is A Big City
One of my favorite things is baseball. I grew up playing baseball and loving baseball. My favorite
baseball team is the Boston red sox which so happens to be my family's favorite city. My
grandparents have told me about their favorite place, Boston. As they told me so many stories of
their favorite after a while it became my favorite place. In Boston there is a Harvard law school and
Fenway park and so many other interesting places. Most of my family has been to Boston, but I
have never gone, the fact that I have never went bothers me. Boston has so many things to offer such
as Fenway, great food, and just the fact it is a big city and a new place. So if I could go anywhere I
would choose Boston.
To begin with, Boston is home to Fenway Park. I have always wanted to visit Fenway Because
Fenway is home to the Boston red sox my favorite baseball team. Baseball has been my favorite

like watching a clock work with its gears. I personally think it is fun to explore new places and the
fact that it is Boston is icing on the cake. Also in a place like Boston I get to mingle with other red
sox fans. Big cities are big tourist places which I always find interesting. One of my fantasies is to

George Herman Ruth Jr. is by far one of Americas greatest sports heroes. He is known primarily for
his great baseball exploits and secondary as a man who stayed out late before every game and

just baseball and parties. As a boy Ruth was your average youth who got himself into a little to

Fortunately he found someone he could trust and respect. Someone that boosted his morale and
made him feel good about himself. The person responsible for this act of kindness was Brother
Mathias. He acted like a father to him. He taught George to read and write and the difference
between right and wrong. Brother Mathias was a giant 6'6'' and well built to about 250 pounds,
which meant he could accomplish any objective without raising his voice or using physical force.
The first time George swung a baseball bat was at the school. He knew then he was to be a hitter. He
said to a friend, "It was one of those things you could just feel."(59) Brother Mathias taught him to
be a better ball player. He schooled Ruth in the fundamentals of the game. George finally had
something to be happy about. He had Brother Mathias his new father–figure and he had baseball.

Babe Ruth, Informative
Everyone has heard of the infamous "Babe Ruth", but few people know that his birth given name is
George Herman Ruth, Jr. He lived from February 6, 1895 – August 16, 1948, and was best known as
"Babe" Ruth and nicknamed "the Bambino" and "the Sultan of Swat". Babe was an American
baseball player who spent 22 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) playing for three teams
between the years of 1914–1935. The most important points of Babe's life are his early childhood,
his major league baseball career, and the legacy that Babe left behind.
Ruth came from German–American parents, Kate Schamberger–Ruth and George Herman Ruth, Sr.

Babe's amazing pitching allowed the Red Sox to win the World Series again, four games to one.
Ruth extended his World Series consecutive scoreless inning streak to 29⅔ innings, a recorded that
would last until almost fifty years later. Inly July 1918, Ruth walked off the field due to a dispute
with the manager, a mistake that would soon lead him to be traded to the Yankees. However Ruth
wouldn't go out without a fight. Ruth placed a "curse" on the Red Sox for trading him to the
Yankees. The Red Sox didn't win another World Series until 2004 (86 years later).
On December 26, 1919, Babe Ruth was traded to the Yankees. Several reasons such as Babe's
negative attitude and his demand for a double in his salary led his trade to the New York Yankees for
almost $2mil (in now a days dollars). Babe would stay with the Yankees from 1919–1935. During
his career with the Yankees, Babe Ruth emerged from a pitcher, to an all–star hitter. In 1920, Babe
hit 54 home runs and his .847 slugging average would remain a Major League Baseball record for
over 80 years. The best year of Ruth's career was 1921, hitting 59 home runs, batting .378 and
slugging .846. Ruth also hit a record high of 139 home runs on July 18, 1921. Ruth's name soon
became synonymous with the term home–run. Babe's powerful home runs went as far as 575 feet
from the home plate. Unfortunately, due to an injury, Babe was not able to play in a majority of the

Patriot's Day is an official state holiday commemorating the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington
and Concord which marked the first shots of the Revolutionary War. Since 1969, the holiday has

"Four days later, after an intense manhunt that shut down the Boston area, police captured one of the
bombing suspects, whose older brother and fellow suspect, died following a shootout with law
enforcement earlier that same day"( History). Boston's response to the marathon bombings – which
saved lives, maintained order, eventually captured the lone surviving suspect, and brought a
community together to heal, all in less than a week was what truly made the city "strong." When
news spread to the Red Sox while they were on the road, players took action immediately. They
asked clubhouse workers to sew "617', which is the Boston area code, on the back of a road jersey.
The next day, the jersey hung in their dugout with "Boston" above the area code and "Strong" below
it. Head coach John Farrell stated in a press conference that "Even though we may not be in Boston
right now, we carry this with us. We feel very much a part of the city and the community and
everything that goes on there." The Red Sox ended up winning that game by a score of 7–2. While
the city was healing, baseball was a distraction to keep everyone calm. The Red Sox are a way of

Strategies In the world of major league baseball, Oaklands A's defied the laws of baseball
economics. The team spent only $34 million (the 2nd lowest payroll) had won 102 games and lost
only 60 in 2001. On top of this, they finished first in their division and made the playoffs. Major

than high school ones. Another staffing strategy is the case of Scott Hatteberg. Hatteberg plays with
the Boston Rex Sox. He was injured and was never signed up by Sox. Oaklands A's did not waste
time and hired Hatteberged. A's has done this because Hatterberg's has an on–base scoring record.
According to A's, Hatteberg filled up what is missing in the team. c) Training and development
strategies Batting average was the norm adopted by other baseball teams. But training for Oakland
was focused on the player's ability to obtain on–base scoring. The team relied more on selecting
players by their on–base percentages. According to Sabermetrics model, teams always win with
players having attained high on–base percentages. Oakland's Training and development strategies
embraced on–base percentage as a philosophy for the entire Oakland organization. This system was
the star. Each minor league team in the Oakland system began to lead it league in walks, and
resulted to higher on–base percentage. 2. Explain how the compensation, staffing, and training

Essay on Baseball: An Extraordinary Game
Growing up in my house, sports were around like Sunday church services and family dinners. From
the time that I can remember, baseball was the most prevalent of the sports focused on by my family.
Games were always on the TV. My father, a Dodger's fan, would always catch the L.A. games when
they were on. When my dad told me bedtime stories, I heard about Duke Snyder and Willie Mays,
Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium instead of fairy tales. He taught me how to throw, catch, and bat,
but he also imparted to me the history of the game. All through my youth I was a never– ending
fountain of questions about baseball, and Dad always seemed to have the answers.

Where and when Dad and I go to the ballparks, are kept secret from my brother. Then, when we get
to the park for the first game and the starting lineups are being announced, I call Keith and tell him
where we are. The humor, quite obviously, is more on my side than his, but he bears it well.
Nothing is left out on the trips that Dad and I take. We get to the ballpark early so we can walk
around and see the famous spots of the park. For instance, at Fenway our first stop was the bleacher
section next to the Green Monster, and our next was the infamous Triangle in center field and the
bullpen abnormally put out in the open of right field. "Seeing the Triangle and how right field really
angles in was very unique," my Dad said of Fenway. At Camden Yards we strolled down Eutaw
Street and checked out the plaques cemented into the ground where players' homeruns had bit. My
Dad's favorite part of Camden Yards was Eutaw Street because "it was like an endless mall." We
also hit up the shops for various sports souvenirs during the first game and sport our new purchases
to the last two games, pretending we're die hard fans of the team.

Moneyball Unfair
In Major League Baseball the general belief is that the more a team spends on their payroll the more
games they will win. With the absence of a salary cap baseball may seam unfair to the smaller
market teams who can't bare the salary costs that the larger market teams can. In Michael Lewis'
Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game Lewis depicts just how the Oakland Athletics have
been winning in an unfair game for almost a decade. The A's are a small market team that doesn't
have nearly the amount of money at their disposal that their competitors in the American League do.

However The Oakland A's and General Manager Billy Beane disprove the theory from our textbook
because they are a small market team that accumulates one of the highest winning percentages year
after year. This is because author Rodney Fort is half right in his hypothesis. Revenue imbalance
does for the most part drive payroll imbalance but revenue imbalance does not entirely drive
competitive imbalance. Just because a team has a low payroll as a result of being in a small market
does not necessarily mean that they have no chance of competing. In addition to Oakland, teams
with small payrolls have still been competitive in the recent past. In 2003 The Florida Marlins won
the World Series with a payroll of 48 million which was one of the lowest in the league and the
Minnesota Twins like the Oakland A's have been consistently competitive in the AL over the last 5
or 6 years despite being in a small market.
The A's recent success is attributed to the innovative approach taken by Billy Beane in assembling a
baseball team with a very limited amount of financial resources. Billy Beane has built a successful
ball club because he has found an efficient and cost effective way of measuring baseball talent thus
essentially creating a loophole in this unfair game because winning percentage is a result of talent

seemed like I was on the verge of quitting, and I followed through on my commitments. Not only is
this trait seen in my own personal experiences, but it also flourishes in the arts. Furthermore, the
trait of grit can be connected to a film named "The Martian" which is part of the arts. This movie,
originally a novel published by Andy Weir, was released in 2015 starring Matt Damon (Mark
Watney) and directed by Ridley Scott. The setting already starts on Mars when Mark, the botanist of
his crew, have set up base and are collecting rock samples. They see a massive dust storm
approaching and they attempt to evacuate from the planet. In this storm, Watney is blown away and
is isolated from the rest of the group, and the rest of the team assumes he is dead and take off
without him. However, the next day, Watney startles awake makes it back to base and realizes he has
been left alone; he is certain he is going to die. The lab setup is only able to last 31 days, he can run
out of food, and if the oxygenator breaks he will suffocate, if the water reclaimer breaks he will die
of thirst, and it will take at least four years for another trip to Mars where his crew or NASA can
save him. Despite all of the troubles, Mark shows

Billy Beane And Moneyball
"Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game," by Michael Lewis is a book that discusses how
the Oakland Athletics became a baseball powerhouse despite having one of the smallest budgets.
The man who is the architect of this franchise is Billy Beane, an ex–player turned general manager.
Beane was a player who had all of the physical tools old school scouts look for, however he turned
out to be a disappointment; instead of falling into the trap other general managers fell into, he
looked for a competitive edge, a new market inefficiency. He was not afraid to go against the norm,
he made a team with the second smallest budget into a powerhouse, and he inspired an entire new
era of successful general managers, as well as impacting people in other ... Show more content on

One of the most notable executives inspired by Beane is Theo Epstein, a Yale graduate who talked
with Beane as much as possible when he was the assistant general manager in the Red Sox franchise
and due to his frequent conversations with Beane, Epstein becomes obsessed with high on–base
percentage players, such as Kevin Youkilis (Lewis 211). Inspired by Billy Beane, Theo Epstein leads
the Boston Red Sox to two World Series titles in nine years, placing a heavy emphasis on on–base
percentage; The Red Sox never placed below second in annual on–base percentage during Epstein's
tenure as general manager, and now Epstein is recreating the same philosophy in Chicago (ESPN).
Another baseball general manager who was tremendously influenced by Billy Beane was Andrew
Friedman; facing a tight budget in Tampa Bay much like Beane in Oakland, he drafted many college
players and he led a mediocre franchise to four playoff appearances through following Billy Beane's
philosophy (Vice Sports). The Pittsburgh Pirates and their general manager, Neal Huntington have
taken Beane's philosophy to a whole different level; he hired people out of Ivy League schools just
like Beane, however Huntington hired many more specific analysts. Huntington hired Baseball
Prospectus's Dan Fox to build the structure of their proprietary database, while also being an analyst
for the Pirates, also Mike Fitzgerald was hired as an analyst who even traveled with the team on the
road; over the years the Pirates' analytical team built a relationship with the players and the coaching
staff, to the point where the analytical group became a key part of the team, even more so than the
Oakland A's and Billy Beane (Sloan Sports Conference). Billy Beane's impact has spread even
beyond baseball; it has spread to soccer, american football, and basketball, one example of a soccer
team following Beane's philosophy is FC

What Are The Events In The Life Of Babe Ruth
The Life Of Babe Ruth
Babe Ruth, born George Ruth, Jr., is considered by many to be the greatest baseball player of all
time. Everybody knows how great a hitter Babe was and how he virtually invented the home run.
Not everybody knows how great of a pitcher Babe was, even though he was one of the best left–
handed pitchers of all time. Babe had a 92 and 44 record, 67.6%, and a 2.24 career earned– run
average in 163 games pitched. Not many career .342 hitters that averaged a home run every 11.8 at
bats can say that.
George Ruth, Jr. was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on February 6, 1895, son of George Herman
Ruth, Sr. and Kate Ruth. George took the name of Herman at his confirmation ... Show more content

Babe Ruth. At first George thought the name, Babe, was a joke, but after a while it became like a
proper name, and everybody called him Babe.
After an impressive showing in the International League, Babe and the rest of the Oriole team were
put up for sale. The Boston Red Sox bought Babe and he saw his first major league action on July
11,1914, as he took the mound against the Cleveland Naps. Babe ended up winning the game 4–3
after pitching seven innings and letting up only three runs on five hits. The Red Sox sent
Ruth to the International League to play on the Providence team, to get some more experience. At
Providence, Ruth had a record of 11 wins and 2 loses. On
September 5, Ruth won a game 9–0, only letting up one hit, but more significantly he hit his first
and only minor league home run.
The Red Sox brought Ruth back up after the Providence team won the pennant and Ruth pitched in
one game without decision. While in Boston, Ruth almost always went to Landers coffee shop and
his usual waitress was a girl named Helen Woodford. During breakfast one morning Ruth looked up
at Helen and said, "How about you and me getting married, hon?" After thinking it over for a couple
of minutes, Helen accepted his proposal. After the baseball season,
Babe and Helen got married in St. Paul's Church, Ellicott City, Maryland, on
October 17,1914. Helen Woodford Ruth stayed out of the public

How Do People Play Sports In The 1920s
In the 1920s sports became very popular. People were interested in watching and enjoying all sports
such as baseball, wrestling, and boxing. People were also interested in the now popular basketball
and football. People enjoyed watching these sports because of the people who played them. Some
big sports names were Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, Knute Rockne and Red Grange. These people
changed the way we play sports today. This was an era that prevented black people to play
professional sports. They were forced to make their own league, the Negro National League (NNL).
With these and other events people dubbed this era as the golden age of sports. Because of World
War One the Olympics were canceled in 1916. In 1920 the Olympics were brought back. They were
held in the country Belgium. The Olympics were held there because of the suffering this country
went through during the war. It was a peaceful event with new ceremonies. Athletes took oaths on
behalf of all the athletes attending, and doves were released hoping that there would be peace during
the games. The war also caused some countries to be excluded, including Germany, Austria, and
Hungary. There were a total of 2,622 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The NNL was a major source of entertainment for African American people. This helped to establish
the NNL and become recognized as legitimate sports. The athletes were top notch and helped break
the race barrier in the sports world. The 1920's was a great time for sports because this was when
legends were made and the best of the best got to showcase their skills to everyone. Athletes of
the1920's helped shape the way athletes train today, and open doors for people of any race, color or
status. They set a high bar of achievement, allowing new athletes to excel. Sports have changed so
much today, that if a player from the 1920s returned, they would find it too complicated to play the

Babe Ruth Research Paper
Babe Ruth
George Herman Ruth Jr. was known to us as Babe Ruth. He was one of the most decorated athletes
of all time even though he had a troubled beginning. His baseball career spanned for twenty–two
seasons from 1914–1935 and playing for three different teams. George Herman Ruth Jr. was born on
February 6, 1895 to parents George Sr. and Kate in Baltimore. George Jr. was one of the Ruth's two
surviving children. Babe's parents In did not watch after him well. Babe was left to take care of his
younger sister often. The neighborhood they lived in was part of the roughest places in Baltimore.
During Ruth's childhood, Ruth was found drinking, chewing tobacco, and wandering docks. When
Ruth was old enough to go to school, he refused to go. He got caught by truant officers and brought
home. At age seven, Ruth's parents knew ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He was 6 foot 2 inches tall and 170 pounds. He left St. Mary's Industrial School and began playing
baseball. After completing school, George Jr. signed with the Baltimore Orioles (then a minor league
team) in 1914. George Jr. earned the nickname Babe from his teammates while he was in Baltimore.
Later in 1914, Babe Ruth was sold to the Boston Red Sox. While playing with the Red Sox, Babe
was a pitcher. Ruth's pitching record was 94–46 (.671 pct) with a 2.28 ERA. In 1920, Red Sox
owner Harry Frazee sold Babe Ruth for $125,000 to finance a production called No, No Nanette.
After Ruth was sold the Red Sox went on a eighty–six year drought of winning a World Series
finally ending in 2004. In New York, Babe started as the Yankees' right fielder instead of pitching. In
his first season with the Yankees, Babe hit fifty–four total home runs that year which was a record at
that point. A year later Ruth broke his record with fifty–four home runs. That same year Ruth hit his
first World Series home run. Later on October 6, 1926, Ruth was the first player to hit three home
runs in a single World Series

Ryan Howard's Takeover Case Study
Ryan Howard was a major piece of the Phillies NL East dominance from 2007–2011, including two
runs to the World Series. However, since the 2011 season, the Phillies have been bottom dwellers in
the division and have missed the playoffs every year.
A few years ago, the Phillies began a rebuild so a new core of young players could carry the torch.
The rebuild started in December of 2014 when Philadelphia traded longtime shortstop Jimmy
Rollins to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Less than a year later, the Phillies followed the Rollins trade by
moving veteran pitcher Cole Hamels at the deadline last season, and second baseman chase Utley
less than a month after that. The trades, along with a few others, brought in an impressive haul of
prospects poised ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Louis Cardinals outfielder Brandon Moss. Moss played well for the Phillies AAA affiliate in 2011
with a respectable .275 average and 23 home runs. However, it was none other than Howard who
blocked Moss from playing first base for the Phillies at the major league level. The Phillies hoped
Moss' bat would translate to the big leagues and called him up that September, but his stint didn't
last long. The Phillies gave Moss just six at bats in five games, and he scuffled his way to no hits
and failed to get on base. Those six at bats were his last with Philadelphia as Moss became a free
agent after the season. Moss eventually signed with the Oakland A's for the 2012 season, where he
established himself as a major league player because he was given the chance to start. It would truly
be difficult for Phillies fans to see Ruf, like Moss, thriving with a different team because he wasn't
given a chance in Philly.
Ruf broke onto the scene in 2012 as the starting first baseman for the Phillies AA affiliate in
Reading, Pa. That year in Reading, Ruf played in 139 games, blasted 38 home runs and hit for an
average of .317. It's difficult to predict whether Ruf can tear it up as a starter in MLB, but
considering the Phillies current situation, it's certainly worth giving him a shot. The Phillies rebuild
has left them years away from actually competing for a playoff spot, so now is the perfect time

The Goal Of Sports And Sports Collapses

  • 1. The Goal Of Sports And Sports Collapses Introduction: The goal in sports is to win. In every game there is a winner. But sometimes, that winner is unexpected. A team who is winning by a lot of points or wins in a series should win the game. But that doesn't alway happen. Every team somehow collapses or 'chokes' at one time or another. All fans have to deal with the heartbreak of their team losing. Here are the worst blown leads and sports collapses according to us. Yankees vs Red Sox 2004 Yankees had a 3–0 lead in the 2004 American League Championship Series against the Red Sox. The Yankees were looking like they would defeat their rival on their biggest stage. The Red Sox at that point hadn't won a championship for 86 years. It looked like the Curse of the Bambino would have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But then, the Warriors won a close game four with the score 108 to 99. The Cavaliers were down 3– 1. The odds very slim nobody believed in the Cavs. Entering Game 5 with their heads held low, they beat the Warriors. That gave them a spark that they needed. In game six the same thing happened they beat them again and people were left with their jaws dropped. Entering game seven at Oracle Arena, the Warriors stadium, with tickets selling at $2,800 a seat, Stephen Curry faced off with Lebron James. When the 1st quarter ended, the Cavaliers lead by one point. At halftime, the Warriors had stolen the lead by seven. The third quarter combined for 60 points, 33 by the Cavaliers and 27 by the Warriors. The 4th quarter was one of the most thrilling quarters of basketball ever. Lebron James had a huge block on Andre Iguodala to save two points and Kyrie Irving the starting point guard drained a three in Curry's face to call game. The Cavaliers had completed the comeback with a 93–89 win over the Golden State Warriors. This sent a shockwave through the country, with a lot of trash talk and memes. This will go down as the most speculated loss in the NBA playoffs. Falcons vs Patriots 2017 The Super Bowl is the most watched television program on the Earth, the two teams playing in the game were the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons. • 3. Compare And Contrast Yerk Giants And Boston Red Sox With the World series right around the corner, I thought it'd be a good time to share two amazing World Series that many people don't know about. 1912––The New York Giants and Boston Red sox were tied in the 8th game of the World Series. Both teams won 3 games and this game would decide who would win the ninth World Series.Tied in the 10th inning, Fred Merkle, who had blown a pennant for the Giants four years earlier, got his revenge by hitting a single in a go–ahead run. It was 2–1 for in favor of the Giants going into the bottom of the 10th. Clyde Wood, the first batter to the plate, hit an easy fly ball into right field. Red Sox Case Study For Price, Red Sox, the price is right An elite starting pitcher will call Fenway Park his home next season for the first time since Jon Lester was traded to Oakland at the deadline in 2014. The Red Sox signed 30 year old lefty David Price to a 7–year, $217 million contract this past Tuesday. Price is one of the top starting pitchers in baseball. He won the 2012 American League Cy Young award after going 20–5 in the regular season. Boston won the David Price sweepstakes after months of talk about where he would land. Besides Boston, it is reported that Price was very interested in signing with either the Cubs, Cardinals, or the team he played for during part of the 2015 season, the Blue Jays. Price will undoubtedly improve the Red Sox struggling pitching staff, one that finished the season with a collective 4.39 earned run average and surrendered 178 home runs, the seventh most in the MLB. Price finished his 2015 campaign with an 18–5 record and a 2.45 ERA, but his most astonishing numbers came from the second half of the season after he was traded from the Detroit Tigers to the Toronto Blue Jays. After the trade he went 9–1 with a 2.30 ERA. Even more astonishing are his numbers at Fenway Park, something that has Red Sox Nation elated. Over his career, Price has amounted a 6–1 record with a cool 1.95 ERA at America's most beloved ballpark. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 7. Baseball Memoir Essay Ever since I could remember, I have always had a great interest and love for the game of baseball. As a kid, I would spend countless hours in the backyard with my grandfather, or even by myself, tossing, hitting and fielding a baseball. When I wasn't in the yard pretending to be Nomar Garciaparra I would watch the Boston Red Sox games on TV with my Grandfather. Even in my early adolescence, as impatient as most are, I had the patience to sit there and watch the Sox.With my eyes glued to the screen with a look of anticipation fixed on my face ready to mimic my grandfather with the excitement of a home run hit or the frustration of Mo–Vaughn striking out. Wanting nothing to do with baseball, I stopped playing all together and even stopped watching the Sox. Over the next couple years, I had no interest in anything that had to do with baseball or the Red Sox as it would remind me ever so much of my grandfather who I had experienced so much of this game with. Skateboarding became my main focus, giving up all my skills I had acquired in my youth as a ball player, missing the most crucial years of baseball development as a pre–teen. Once in a while I would hear from old coaches, but still had no interest. In October of 2003, I decided I would watch the Red Sox once again considering they were in the playoffs, only to be heartbroken by their dramatic extra inning loss to the Yankees in the American League Championship Series. Once again, I could only think of my grandfather who I had such an attachment with over the Red Sox and the game of baseball. The following spring, the baseball season started again, but I still chose not to watch the Sox or play any baseball whatsoever, that is until they made the post season once again. I decided to pay attention and the Sox advanced to the next round, to play the Yankees once again in the ALCS. Being so heartbroken from the year before, I didn't know what to expect, and sure enough, I found myself in the same position, the Sox down three games to none in the best of a seven game series, I had no faith. • 13. Jackie Robinson And The Civil Rights Movement In the pre–dawn of the Civil Rights Movement, the 1940s were rife with racial tension. Nearly all public institutions were segregated. Libraries, schools, transportation, the armed forces. Sports teams were just as rigorously divided into two sects––the Negro leagues and the major leagues. There was no question about which division a black man would play for. Nobody dared cross the rift between whites and blacks; they were too afraid. Eventually, however, all it took was one man to begin breaking down the barrier. Jackie Robinson's time in baseball's major leagues broke color lines and brought about significant social changes both on and off the field. Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born on January 31, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia. His parents, Mallie and Jerry Robinson, were from poor sharecropping families and had four other children––Willa Mae, Edgar, Frank, and Matthew "Mack" (who later became a silver medalist at the 1936 Summer Olympics). When Jackie, the youngest, was barely one year old, his father left the family. Mallie Robinson moved her children from Cairo to a relatively poor neighborhood in Pasadena, California. Jackie Robinson was often excluded from activities and spent a short time in a gang (he was persuaded to abandon it by a friend). In 1935, Robinson was enrolled at John Muir High School, where he was inspired by his athletic older brothers to play sports. • 15. Payton's Babe Ruth Is it a bird... is it a plane... it's a baseball! The game of baseball was invented by a person by the name of Abner Doubleday in 1839. Since then, baseball has become competitive, exciting and full of memorable moments. Baseball is one of America's most popular sports. It takes skilled players to make the game entertaining and fun. Some skilled players include: Jackie Robinson, Ty Cobb, Willie Mays, Lou Gehrig and Stan Musial. But none of these players are as good as Babe Ruth. George Herman Ruth was born on February 6, 1895 in a small house in Baltimore, Maryland. George grew up a bum, living on the streets of the Baltimore waterfront. George was a disrespectful kid that always ran away from school. He also smoked and played pranks on people. One day, a man named Brother Matthias saw George's energy and wanted to harness that energy for baseball. Matthias could hit a baseball over the fence, using just one arm. This inspired George to play baseball. One day in a baseball game, George was up to bat facing an inexperienced pitcher. George started laughing and making fun of him. Matthias stopped George and told him, "If you think that you can do better, let's see you go out there and pitch." The next inning, George went up to the mound and pitched. He had no clue how to pitch but he threw harder than anyone in the league. A minor league team's coach saw him play, and asked the young 19 year old to sign a contract with his team! The Toughest Miracle In The History Of Sports 2004 ALCS: The Biggest Miracle in the History of Sports In the early to mid 2000's, baseball was dominated by two Major League organizations: the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. These two storied organizations have boasted a historic past, each possessing arguably the greatest player the game has ever seen: Babe Ruth. Each of these clubs had hit their peak in the early 2000's, and it set up for an epic clash in the 2004 American League Championship. The Yankees took an early three games to none lead in the best of seven game series, and all hope had been lost throughout the Red Sox fan base. Once the Red Sox went down 3–0, it was contemplated throughout the sports world that the task of beating the Yankees once was daunting enough, much less beating them four times in a row. The Red Sox faced that specific task in Game 4 of the series, the first of their do or die games. Going into the bottom of the 9th inning, the Red Sox were down one run. (baseball–reference.com) (Source B) The Red Sox tied the game, and the game went into extra innings. The Yankees closer, Mariano Rivera, (considered best closer of all time) entered the game for the Yankees. The air came out of the Red Sox fans, as it appeared it was all but over. But, leadoff hitter Kevin Millar drew a walk. He was then pinch run for by Dave Roberts. Roberts stole 2nd base, barely beating the throw from Yankees catcher Jorge Posada. Roberts was batted in, tying the game for the Red Sox and sending the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the 12th inning, David Ortiz blasted the game–winning home run to give the Red Sox the victory. In order for the Red Sox to win just one game against the Yankees, they had to score a run off the best closer of all time, last an extra three innings without losing to a high powered Yankee offense, and hit a game winning bomb in the bottom half of the last inning. This is what it took for the Red Sox to win one game, much less take on the demoralizing task of doing it three additional times. • 19. Descriptive Essay On People In Life There are some people in life, that inspire you, while others can make it more exciting. But, there are a few that can do both. Inspiration is the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative. The people you meet or see in life that can do both seem to influence your very own decisions. They produce unwavering emotions and never seem to concede. These people are the true exemplars of the aphorism, "You only live once." These people know how to fight for their lives, or hold back their emotions for the greater good of others. Shannon Cummings, Rick Porcello, and Devin/Jason Mccourty are my illustrations of people that live life to the fullest and try to help others that aren't able to do the same on their own. They are honest when they need to be, but they know when to tell a white lie to keep from hurting others. These people are philanthropists, donating their time, money, or energy to help others. They are people that are stoic, keeping their emotions to themselves when they are down, which allows others to do the same. Some of them are underdogs in their areas of expertise, but they defy expectations regularly. They are people that overcome many challenges in their way throughout life. These people share the same characteristics as many others in the world, but it is how they use them that makes them extraordinary. • 21. Sportsmanship Vs Sportsmanship There is much debate in our current athletic culture on sportsmanship and gamesmanship. Stories of scandals seem to make the news headlines almost weekly in college and professional athletics. In fact, a story just broke about the Boston Red Sox using an apple watch to steal signs from the New York Yankees (Olney, 2017). Stealing signs has always been part of baseball but using technology is prohibited. There are numerous other examples of athletic teams bending the rules or completely breaking the rules in order to gain a competitive advantage. Sportsmanship is an important part of sports because it ensures that competitors are competing in a fair and ethical manner. According to Epstein (2016), "The ethics of sports was once fairness. Fairness meant not taking undue advantage; if anything, it meant allowing such advantages as chance turned up to go to one's opponent." The Illinois High School Association's slogan for sportsmanship is, "Do What's Right!" ("Do What's Right"). According to the IHSA athletes and coaches should, "Represent their school and community favorably through positive interaction with opposing fans and players before, during, and after the competition" ("Do What's Right!"). Good sportsmanship means that athletes, coaches, and fans, respect their opponent, the referees, and the game. This means playing within the rules, accepting the judgment of the officials, and be humble and gracious in both victory and defeat. It is easy to identify good or bad ... The camera when Juliet enters would be focused on her, maybe with her running into the room where her father is. All of the actors need costumes to make the whole scene come alive. Lord Capulet would be wearing a suit, black with a light blue undershirt and a red tie would be added to this to make the audience believe that he had just come from work. The reading did provide a description of the custom and norms, but I do not know how accurate it was. I have not been to Costa Rica nor have I learned about the Nacirema, but I am certain that Latin American cultures have a strong belief in the supernatural. I believe that the description was accurate. I would however like to do more research before deciding how accurate the descriptions of the norms and customs were. While the text mentions several rituals, I do not feel I fully understand them in their entirety, but it did provide the reader with a bit of insight on the culture of the Nacirema. But I do believe it does accurately state what the norms and customs are of the Nacirema. 2. How did the description make the culture seem 'strange' or 'exotic?' The terms "exotic" and "strange" are ways in which we describe things that we do not understand; exotic describes this reading best of all. The idea that special potions and holy shrines protected someone from illness is a very interesting concept and one commonly shared in Latin American communities. In Judeo–Christian society a lot of households do not have shrines nor keep special potions within their homes. For the first time in 86 years, the Boston Red Sox were the world champions of baseball. There is no arguing that the 2004 Red Sox were a good team that played excellent baseball throughout the season. The team was led not by talent cultivated through the Red Sox' farm system but by high–priced, free–agent acquisitions such as Pedro Martinez, Manny Ramirez, Keith Foulke, Curt Shilling and David Ortiz. The average age for a Red Sox team member was 31.1 years, the oldest team average in the league. Additionally, the cumulative payroll for the 2004 Red Sox was the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After this analysis, I hope to determine which variables have the highest correlation to winning baseball games for the 2004 season. Major League Baseball is the only major professional sport that does not have a salary cap (the maximum in total payroll that a team can pay its players). For example, the National Football League has a salary cap for 2004 of about $75 million and the National Basketball Association has a salary cap for 2004 of approximately $44 million. There are multiple reasons for a salary cap but two of the underlying reasons are parity (equality) and competitiveness. It is assumed that without a salary cap, large market teams such as New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago will be able to 'buy up' all the good players leaving the small market cities such as Minneapolis, Cincinnati, and Phoenix with the less–talented left–overs. Additionally, teams that win more games and make the playoffs and World Series receive extra revenue from TV, thereby creating even more of a discrepancy if large market teams have an advantage in winning more games and playing in the post–season. In 1998, MLB Commission Bud Selig formed a panel to report on the economic conditions within baseball. One of the findings of that panel was that team payrolls have become increasingly disparate; the gap between "rich" and "poor" teams is not only wide, but it is growing. Babe was an American baseball player who spent 22 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) playing for three teams between the years of 1914–1935. The most important points of Babe's life are his early childhood, his major league baseball career, and the legacy that Babe left behind. Ruth extended his World Series consecutive scoreless inning streak to 29⅔ innings, a recorded that would last until almost fifty years later. Inly July 1918, Ruth walked off the field due to a dispute with the manager, a mistake that would soon lead him to be traded to the Yankees. However Ruth wouldn't go out without a fight. Ruth placed a "curse" on the Red Sox for trading him to the Yankees. The Red Sox didn't win another World Series until 2004 (86 years later). On December 26, 1919, Babe Ruth was traded to the Yankees. Several reasons such as Babe's negative attitude and his demand for a double in his salary led his trade to the New York Yankees for almost $2mil (in now a days dollars). Babe would stay with the Yankees from 1919–1935. During his career with the Yankees, Babe Ruth emerged from a pitcher, to an all–star hitter. Boston's response to the marathon bombings – which saved lives, maintained order, eventually captured the lone surviving suspect, and brought a community together to heal, all in less than a week was what truly made the city "strong." When news spread to the Red Sox while they were on the road, players took action immediately. They asked clubhouse workers to sew "617', which is the Boston area code, on the back of a road jersey. With the absence of a salary cap baseball may seam unfair to the smaller market teams who can't bare the salary costs that the larger market teams can. In Michael Lewis' Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game Lewis depicts just how the Oakland Athletics have been winning in an unfair game for almost a decade. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However The Oakland A's and General Manager Billy Beane disprove the theory from our textbook because they are a small market team that accumulates one of the highest winning percentages year after year. This is because author Rodney Fort is half right in his hypothesis. Revenue imbalance does for the most part drive payroll imbalance but revenue imbalance does not entirely drive competitive imbalance. Just because a team has a low payroll as a result of being in a small market does not necessarily mean that they have no chance of competing. In addition to Oakland, teams with small payrolls have still been competitive in the recent past. In 2003 The Florida Marlins won the World Series with a payroll of 48 million which was one of the lowest in the league and the Minnesota Twins like the Oakland A's have been consistently competitive in the AL over the last 5 or 6 years despite being in a small market. The A's recent success is attributed to the innovative approach taken by Billy Beane in assembling a baseball team with a very limited amount of financial resources. Billy Beane has built a successful ball club because he has found an efficient and cost effective way of measuring baseball talent thus essentially creating a loophole in this unfair game because winning percentage is a result of talent not ... Billy Beane And Moneyball "Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game," by Michael Lewis is a book that discusses how the Oakland Athletics became a baseball powerhouse despite having one of the smallest budgets. The man who is the architect of this franchise is Billy Beane, an ex–player turned general manager. Beane was a player who had all of the physical tools old school scouts look for, however he turned out to be a disappointment; instead of falling into the trap other general managers fell into, he looked for a competitive edge, a new market inefficiency. Inspired by Billy Beane, Theo Epstein leads the Boston Red Sox to two World Series titles in nine years, placing a heavy emphasis on on–base percentage; The Red Sox never placed below second in annual on–base percentage during Epstein's tenure as general manager, and now Epstein is recreating the same philosophy in Chicago (ESPN). Another baseball general manager who was tremendously influenced by Billy Beane was Andrew Friedman; facing a tight budget in Tampa Bay much like Beane in Oakland, he drafted many college players and he led a mediocre franchise to four playoff appearances through following Billy Beane's philosophy (Vice Sports). The Pittsburgh Pirates and their general manager, Neal Huntington have taken Beane's philosophy to a whole different level; he hired people out of Ivy League schools just like Beane, however Huntington hired many more specific analysts. Huntington hired Baseball Prospectus's Dan Fox to build the structure of their proprietary database, while also being an analyst for the Pirates, also Mike Fitzgerald was hired as an analyst who even traveled with the team on the road; over the years the Pirates' analytical team built a relationship with the players and the coaching staff, to the point where the analytical group became a key part of the team, even more so than the Oakland A's and Billy Beane (Sloan Sports Conference). • 71. What Are The Events In The Life Of Babe Ruth The Life Of Babe Ruth Babe Ruth, born George Ruth, Jr., is considered by many to be the greatest baseball player of all time. Everybody knows how great a hitter Babe was and how he virtually invented the home run. Not everybody knows how great of a pitcher Babe was, even though he was one of the best left– handed pitchers of all time. Babe had a 92 and 44 record, 67.6%, and a 2.24 career earned– run average in 163 games pitched. Not many career .342 hitters that averaged a home run every 11.8 at bats can say that. After an impressive showing in the International League, Babe and the rest of the Oriole team were put up for sale. The Boston Red Sox bought Babe and he saw his first major league action on July 11,1914, as he took the mound against the Cleveland Naps. Babe ended up winning the game 4–3 after pitching seven innings and letting up only three runs on five hits. The Red Sox sent Ruth to the International League to play on the Providence team, to get some more experience. At Providence, Ruth had a record of 11 wins and 2 loses. On September 5, Ruth won a game 9–0, only letting up one hit, but more significantly he hit his first and only minor league home run. The Red Sox brought Ruth back up after the Providence team won the pennant and Ruth pitched in one game without decision. While in Boston, Ruth almost always went to Landers coffee shop and his usual waitress was a girl named Helen Woodford. During breakfast one morning Ruth looked up at Helen and said, "How about you and me getting married, hon?" After thinking it over for a couple of minutes, Helen accepted his proposal. After the baseball season, Babe and Helen got married in St. Paul's Church, Ellicott City, Maryland, on October 17,1914. Helen Woodford Ruth stayed out of the public ... People were also interested in the now popular basketball and football. People enjoyed watching these sports because of the people who played them. Some big sports names were Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, Knute Rockne and Red Grange. These people changed the way we play sports today. This was an era that prevented black people to play professional sports. They were forced to make their own league, the Negro National League (NNL). With these and other events people dubbed this era as the golden age of sports. Because of World War One the Olympics were canceled in 1916. In 1920 the Olympics were brought back. They were held in the country Belgium. The Olympics were held there because of the suffering this country went through during the war. It was a peaceful event with new ceremonies. Athletes took oaths on behalf of all the athletes attending, and doves were released hoping that there would be peace during the games. • 77. Ryan Howard's Takeover Case Study Ryan Howard was a major piece of the Phillies NL East dominance from 2007–2011, including two runs to the World Series. However, since the 2011 season, the Phillies have been bottom dwellers in the division and have missed the playoffs every year. A few years ago, the Phillies began a rebuild so a new core of young players could carry the torch. The rebuild started in December of 2014 when Philadelphia traded longtime shortstop Jimmy Rollins to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Less than a year later, the Phillies followed the Rollins trade by moving veteran pitcher Cole Hamels at the deadline last season, and second baseman chase Utley less than a month after that. The trades, along with a few others, brought in an impressive haul of prospects poised ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Louis Cardinals outfielder Brandon Moss. Moss played well for the Phillies AAA affiliate in 2011 with a respectable .275 average and 23 home runs. However, it was none other than Howard who blocked Moss from playing first base for the Phillies at the major league level. The Phillies hoped Moss' bat would translate to the big leagues and called him up that September, but his stint didn't last long. The Phillies gave Moss just six at bats in five games, and he scuffled his way to no hits and failed to get on base. Those six at bats were his last with Philadelphia as Moss became a free agent after the season. Moss eventually signed with the Oakland A's for the 2012 season, where he established himself as a major league player because he was given the chance to start. It would truly be difficult for Phillies fans to see Ruf, like Moss, thriving with a different team because he wasn't given a chance in Philly. Ruf broke onto the scene in 2012 as the starting first baseman for the Phillies AA affiliate in Reading, Pa. That year in Reading, Ruf played in 139 games, blasted 38 home runs and hit for an average of .317. It's difficult to predict whether Ruf can tear it up as a starter in MLB, but considering the Phillies current situation, it's certainly worth giving him a shot. The Phillies rebuild has left them years away from actually competing for a playoff spot, so now is the perfect time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
