• Amita Vadlamudi is experienced as a computer systems
engineer in financial services. Amita Vadlamudi also takes a
personal interest in American history. One area of history
often neglected by scholars is the contribution of women to
the American Revolution and subsequent early American
political life; and one woman of particular interest to scholars
of early America is Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton, the wife of
Alexander Hamilton.
Following the death of Alexander Hamilton at the hands of
fellow revolutionary and early American government member
Aaron Burr, Elizabeth Hamilton became part of the Society
for the Relief of Poor Widows with Small Children.

3. Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton
• She grew passionate about the plight of orphans and the
children of widows due to both her own loss and her late
husband's orphan background, and in 1806, she helped
to found the Orphan Asylum Society, the first orphanage
in New York. In 1821, she was promoted from second
directress to first directress. She stayed on in this
position until 1848, when she left to live with her
widowed daughter.
She also did much to preserve writings and other
artifacts of the American Revolution. With the help of
one of her sons, she was able to recover much of
Alexander Hamilton's body of work, and ultimately got
much of it published.
