3. The brain is one of the largest
and most complex organs in the
human body.
It is made up of more than 100
billion nerves that communicate
in trillions of connections called
synapses.

4. The brain is divided into
three main parts:
o The hindbrain
o The midbrain
o The forebrain

5. The hindbrain is located at the rear of
the skull and is the lowest portion of the
brain.
The hindbrain contains three parts:
o Medulla ( the medulla controls
essential functions, such as breathing
and blood flow)
o Pons (affects activities such as
sleeping, waking, and dreaming)
o cerebellum (controls balance and
coordination of movement)

6. Midbrain lies between hindbrain
and forebrain and connects the
two. It receives sensory
information and sends it to the
appropriates part of forebrain.
Midbrain also controls some
auditory reflexes and posture.

7. The forebrain is the highest region of the brain
because it essentially differentiates us humans from
the rest in the animal kingdom. This region is also
involved in processing complex information.
The forebrain is composed of:
o Thalamus( It receives and modifies sensory
impulses except from nose . Also involved in
pain and consciousness )
o Hypothalamus( play role in regulating body
temperature and biological drives such as
hunger, thirst)
o Limbic system
 Amygdala(processes emotional experience)
 Hippocampus(plays a role in memory)
o Cerebrum

8. Cerebrum is the largest part of the
forebrain and it is associated with
highest brain function such as
thought and action.
The cerebrum is divided into two
parts:
o Right hemisphere
o Left hemisphere
There are four lobes in each
hemisphere.
 Frontal lobe ( speech, smell)
 Parietal lobe (body awareness)
 Temporal lobe (hearing)
 Occipital lobe (vision)
