Brain
• The brain is that part of the central nervous
system that lies inside the cranial cavity. It is
continuous with the spinal cord through the
foramen magnum.
Where is the location of the brain?
Is the brain part of the central or peripheral
nervous system?
What is the relation between the spinal cord and
the brain?
Cerebrum
The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain and
consists of two cerebral hemispheres connected
by a mass of white matter called the corpus
callosum. Each hemisphere extends from the
frontal to the occipital bones; above the anterior
and middle cranial fossae; and, posteriorly, above
the tentorium cerebelli. The hemispheres are
separated by a deep cleft, the longitudinalُّ
ُّ‫ي‬ِ‫ن‬َ‫ال‬‫و‬
ُّ
‫الط‬
fissure, into which projects the falx cerebri.
What is the largest part of the brain?
How many hemispheres comprise the cerebrum?
Define corpus callosum and mention its function.
What does separate the two hemispheres?
Longitudinal fissure of cerebrum.
The surface layer of each hemisphere is called the
cortex and is composed of gray matter. The
cerebral cortex is thrown into folds, or gyri,
separated by fissures, or sulci. By this means, the
surface area of the cortex is greatly increased.
Several of the large sulci conveniently subdivide
the surface of each hemisphere into lobes. The
lobes are named for the bones of the cranium
under which they lie.
What is the name of the outermost cerebral
surface layer?
What is the composition of the cerebral cortex?
What is the point of presence of gyri and sulci?
How does the brain lobes form?
 The frontal lobe is situated in front of the
centralُّ
ُّ‫ي‬ِ‫ز‬َ‫ك‬ْ‫ر‬َ‫م‬‫ال‬ sulcus and above the lateral
sulcus.
 The parietal lobe is situated behind the central
sulcus and above the lateral sulcus.
 The occipital lobe lies below the parieto-occipital
sulcus.
 Below the lateral sulcus is situated the temporal
lobe.
Enumerate the brain lobes to their respective
sulci.

The precentral gyrus
immediately anterior to the central sulcus and is
known as the motor area. The large motor nerve cells
in this area control voluntary movements on the
opposite side of the body. Most nerve fibers cross over
to the opposite side (*decussation) in the medulla
oblongata as they descend to the spinal cord.
What is the location of precentral gyrus?
What is the other name of the precentral gyrus?
Why do the motor area control movements on opposite side of
body?
In the motor area, the body is represented in an
inverted position, with the nerve cells controlling
the movements of the feet located in the upper
part and those controlling the movements of the
face and hands in the lower part.
Explain the body representation in the motor area?
The body representation in the motor cortex
Motor homunculus on
the precentral gyrus
Most nerve fibers cross over to
the opposite side (*decussation)
in the medulla oblongata as they
descend to the spinal cord.
The postcentralُّ
‫ي‬ِ‫ز‬َ‫ك‬ْ‫ر‬َ‫م‬‫ُّال‬َ‫ف‬ْ‫ل‬َ‫خ‬ gyrus lies
immediately posterior to the central sulcus and is
known as the sensory area. The small nerve cells
in this area receive and interpret sensations of:
• pain,
• temperature,
• touch,
• and pressure from the opposite side of the body.
The superior temporal gyrus lies immediately
below the lateral sulcus. The middle of this gyrus
is concerned with the reception and
interpretation of sound and is known as the
auditory area.
What does the superior temporal gyrus concern
with? And what is its other name?
Broca's area, or the motor speech area, lies just
above the lateral sulcus. It controls the
movements employed in speech. It is dominant in
the left hemisphere in right-handed persons and
in the right hemisphere in left-handed persons.
What is Broca's area function?
Where is Broca's area dominant in a right-
handed person?

and medial aspect of the cerebral hemisphere in
the region of the calcarineّ

the receiving area for visual impressions.
The cavity present within each cerebral
hemisphere is called the lateral ventricle. The
lateral ventricles communicate with the third
ventricle through the interventricular foramina.

Diencephalonُّ
‫ني‬ْ‫ي‬‫اغُّالب‬ِ‫م‬ِ‫د‬‫ال‬
The diencephalon is almost completely hidden
from the surface of the brain. It consists of a
dorsal thalamus and a ventral hypothalamus.
The thalamus is a large mass of gray matter that
lies on either side of the third ventricle. The
activities of the thalamus are closely related to
that of the cerebral cortex and damage to the
thalamus causes great loss of cerebral function.
Thalamus is the great relay station on the
afferent sensory pathway to the cerebral cortex.
The thalamus is situated on each side of the third
ventricle. The anterior end of the thalamus is
narrow and rounded and forms the posterior
boundary of the interventricular‫َات‬‫ن‬‫ي‬َ‫ط‬ُ‫ب‬‫ُّال‬َ‫َين‬‫ب‬
foramen. The posterior end is expanded to form
the pulvinar ُّ
ُ‫َة‬‫د‬‫سا‬ِ‫و‬.
 The medial surface of the thalamus forms the
superior part of the lateral wall of the third
ventricle and is usually connected to the
opposite thalamus by a band of gray matter, the
interthalamic connection (interthalamic
 The lateral surface of the thalamus is separated
from the lentiform nucleus‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬‫النواةُّالعدس‬ by the
very important band of white matter called the
internal capsule ّ
ُ‫ة‬َ‫ر‬ِ‫ئ‬‫ّالغا‬ُ‫ة‬َ‫ظ‬َ‫ف‬ْ‫ح‬ِ‫م‬‫ال‬. The thalamus
is a very important cell station that receives the
main sensory tracts (except the olfactory
pathway).
Thalamus should be regarded as a station where
much of the information is integrated and relayed
to the cerebral cortex and many other subcortical
regions. It also plays a key role in the integration
of visceral and somatic functions.
The pineal gland is a small, conical structure that
is attached by the pineal stalk ُّ

‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬ِ‫ر‬ to
the diencephalon. It projects backward so that it
lies posterior to the midbrain. pineal gland is now
recognized as an important endocrine gland
capable of influencing the activities of the
pituitary gland, the islets of Langerhans of the
pancreas, the parathyroids, the adrenal cortex
and the adrenal medulla, and the gonads.
The following structures are found in the floor of
the third ventricle from before backward:
 the optic chiasma is a flattened bundle of nerve
fibers situated at the junction of the anterior
wall and floor of the third ventricle,
 the tuber cinereum‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬ِ‫د‬‫ما‬َّ‫ر‬‫ُّال‬ُ‫َة‬‫ب‬َ‫د‬َ‫ح‬‫ال‬ is a convex
mass of gray matter. It is continuous inferiorly
with the infundibulum.
 The infundibulumُّ
ُ‫ع‬ْ‫م‬ِ‫ق‬‫ال‬ is hollow and becomes
continuous with the posterior lobe of the
hypophysis cerebri.
 The mammillary bodies‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬ِ‫م‬َ‫َل‬‫ح‬‫ُّال‬ُ‫سام‬ْ‫ج‬َ‫األ‬ are two
small hemispherical bodies situated side by side
posterior to the tuber cinereum and the
The third ventricle is a slitlike cleft between the
two thalami. It communicates anteriorly with the
lateral ventricles through the interventricular
foramina (foramina of Monro), and it
communicates posteriorly with the fourth
ventricle through the cerebral aqueductُُّ‫ل‬‫َسا‬‫م‬‫ال‬
ُّ
‫ماغي‬ِ‫الد‬.
Lateral Ventricles
There are two lateral ventricles, and one is
present in each cerebral hemisphere. Each
ventricle is a roughly C-shaped cavity lined with
ependyma‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬ِ‫ب‬َ‫ص‬َ‫ع‬‫ُّال‬ُ‫ة‬َ‫ن‬‫طا‬ِ‫ب‬‫ال‬ and filled with
cerebrospinal fluid. The lateral ventricle may be
divided into a body, which occupies the parietal
lobe, and from which anterior, posterior, and
inferior horns extend into the frontal, occipital,
and temporal lobes, respectively.
The lateral ventricle communicates with the
cavity of the third ventricle through the
interventricular foramen. This opening, which
lies in the anterior part of the medial wall of the
lateral ventricle, is bounded:
• anteriorly by the anterior column of the
fornixُُّ‫و‬ْ‫ب‬َ‫ق‬‫ال‬,
• and posteriorly by the anterior end of the
thalamus.
Basal Nuclei‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬ِ‫د‬ِ‫ع‬‫َىُّالقا‬‫و‬َّ‫ن‬‫ال‬
The term basal nuclei (basal ganglia) is applied to
a collection of masses of gray matter situated
within each cerebral hemisphere. They are the
corpus striatum ُِّ‫م‬ ْ
‫س‬ِ‫ج‬‫ال‬
‫ط‬َّ‫ط‬َ‫خ‬ُ‫م‬‫ال‬ , the amygdaloid
The corpus striatum is situated lateral to the
thalamus. It is almost completely divided by a
band of nerve fibers, the internal capsule, into
the caudate‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬ِ‫ب‬َ‫ن‬َّ‫الذ‬ nucleus and the
lentiform‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬‫العدس‬ nucleus.
Horizontal section of the cerebrum, as seen from above, showing the relationship
between the lentiform nucleus, the caudate nucleus, the thalamus, and the internal capsule.
The caudate nucleus, a large C-shaped mass of
gray matter that is closely related to the lateral
ventricle, lies lateral to the thalamus. The lateral
surface of the nucleus is related to the internal
capsule, which separates it from the lentiform
nucleus.
The lentiform nucleus is a wedge-shaped mass of
gray matter whose broad convex base is directed
laterally and its blade medially. It is buried deep
in the white matter of the cerebral hemisphere
and is related medially to the internal capsule,
which separates it from the caudate nucleus and
the thalamus. The lentiform nucleus is related
laterally to a thin sheet of white matter, the
external capsule ُّ
ُ‫ة‬َ‫ظ‬َ‫ف‬ْ‫ح‬ِ‫م‬‫ال‬
‫ة‬َ‫ر‬ِ‫ه‬‫ا‬َّ‫الظ‬ , that separates it
from a thin sheet of gray matter, called the
claustrum.
The Lentiform nucleus
The claustrum, in turn, separates the external
capsule from the subcortical white matter of the
insula‫ة‬َ‫ر‬‫َزي‬‫ج‬‫ال‬. Inferiorly at its anterior end, the
lentiform nucleus is continuous with the caudate
nucleus. The function of the corpus striatum is
concerned with muscular movement, which is
accomplished by controlling the cerebral cortex.
The amygdaloid nucleus is situated in the
temporal lobe close to the uncusُّ ُ‫ف‬َ‫ق‬ْ‫ع‬ِ‫م‬. The
amygdaloid nucleus is considered part of the
limbicُّ‫ي‬ِ‫ف‬‫و‬ُ‫الح‬ system.
The claustrum is a thin sheet of gray matter that
is separated from the lateral surface of the
lentiform nucleus by the external capsule.
Lateral to the claustrum is the subcortical white
matter of the insula. The function of the
claustrum is unknown.
White Matter of the Cerebral Hemispheres
The white matter is composed of myelinated
nerve fibers of different diameters supported by
neuroglia. The nerve fibers may be classified into
three groups according to their connections: (1)
‫س‬ِ‫إ‬ fibers.
A- Commissure fibers essentially connect
corresponding regions of the two hemispheres.
They are as follows: the corpus callosum, the
anterior commissureُُّ‫ر‬‫وا‬ِ‫الص‬, the posterior
commissure, the fornix, and the habenular
commissure.
Commissure fibers
1-The corpus callosum, the largest commissure of
the brain, connects the two cerebral hemispheres.
It lies at the bottom of the longitudinal fissure. It
is divided into the rostrumُّ
ُ‫ر‬‫قا‬ْ‫ن‬ِ‫م‬, the genuُُّ‫ة‬َ‫ب‬ْ‫ك‬ُ‫ر‬, the
body, and the spleniumُّ
ُ‫ريط‬ َ
‫ش‬.
2-The anterior commissure is a small bundle of
nerve fibers that crosses the midline in the
Commissure fibers
3-The posterior commissure is a bundle of nerve
fibers that crosses the midline immediately above
the opening of the cerebral aqueduct into the
third ventricle.
4-The fornix is composed of myelinated nerve
fibers and constitutes the efferent system of the
hippocampus that passes to the mammillary
bodies of the hypothalamus.
5-The habenular commissure is a small bundle of
nerve fibers that crosses the midline in the
superior part of the root of the pineal stalk.
B-Association fibers are nerve fibers that
essentially connect various cortical regions within
the same hemisphere and may be divided into
short and long groups.
C-Projection Fibers afferent and efferent nerve
fibers passing to and from the brainstem to the
entire cerebral cortex must travel between large
nuclear masses of gray matter within the
cerebral hemisphere.

Brain anatomy overview under 40 chars

  • 2. Brain • The brain is that part of the central nervous system that lies inside the cranial cavity. It is continuous with the spinal cord through the foramen magnum. Where is the location of the brain? Is the brain part of the central or peripheral nervous system? What is the relation between the spinal cord and the brain?
  • 3. Cerebrum The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain and consists of two cerebral hemispheres connected by a mass of white matter called the corpus callosum. Each hemisphere extends from the frontal to the occipital bones; above the anterior and middle cranial fossae; and, posteriorly, above the tentorium cerebelli. The hemispheres are separated by a deep cleft, the longitudinalُّ ُّ‫ي‬ِ‫ن‬َ‫ال‬‫و‬ ُّ ‫الط‬ fissure, into which projects the falx cerebri. What is the largest part of the brain? How many hemispheres comprise the cerebrum? Define corpus callosum and mention its function. What does separate the two hemispheres?
  • 5. The surface layer of each hemisphere is called the cortex and is composed of gray matter. The cerebral cortex is thrown into folds, or gyri, separated by fissures, or sulci. By this means, the surface area of the cortex is greatly increased. Several of the large sulci conveniently subdivide the surface of each hemisphere into lobes. The lobes are named for the bones of the cranium under which they lie. What is the name of the outermost cerebral surface layer? What is the composition of the cerebral cortex? What is the point of presence of gyri and sulci? How does the brain lobes form?
  • 6.  The frontal lobe is situated in front of the centralُّ ُّ‫ي‬ِ‫ز‬َ‫ك‬ْ‫ر‬َ‫م‬‫ال‬ sulcus and above the lateral sulcus.  The parietal lobe is situated behind the central sulcus and above the lateral sulcus.  The occipital lobe lies below the parieto-occipital sulcus.  Below the lateral sulcus is situated the temporal lobe. Enumerate the brain lobes to their respective sulci.
  • 7. Inferior view of cerebrum. Lobes of the cerebral cortex (right hemisphere view) Medial surface of right hemisphere.
  • 8. The precentral gyrusُّ ‫ي‬ِ‫ز‬َ‫ك‬ْ‫ر‬َ‫م‬‫َُّال‬‫م‬‫ما‬َ‫ُّأ‬ ُ‫فيف‬ْ‫ل‬َّ‫ت‬‫ال‬ lies immediately anterior to the central sulcus and is known as the motor area. The large motor nerve cells in this area control voluntary movements on the opposite side of the body. Most nerve fibers cross over to the opposite side (*decussation) in the medulla oblongata as they descend to the spinal cord. What is the location of precentral gyrus? What is the other name of the precentral gyrus? Why do the motor area control movements on opposite side of body? In the motor area, the body is represented in an inverted position, with the nerve cells controlling the movements of the feet located in the upper part and those controlling the movements of the face and hands in the lower part. Explain the body representation in the motor area?
  • 9. The body representation in the motor cortex Motor homunculus on the precentral gyrus
  • 10. Most nerve fibers cross over to the opposite side (*decussation) in the medulla oblongata as they descend to the spinal cord.
  • 11. The postcentralُّ ‫ي‬ِ‫ز‬َ‫ك‬ْ‫ر‬َ‫م‬‫ُّال‬َ‫ف‬ْ‫ل‬َ‫خ‬ gyrus lies immediately posterior to the central sulcus and is known as the sensory area. The small nerve cells in this area receive and interpret sensations of: • pain, • temperature, • touch, • and pressure from the opposite side of the body.
  • 12.
  • 13. The superior temporal gyrus lies immediately below the lateral sulcus. The middle of this gyrus is concerned with the reception and interpretation of sound and is known as the auditory area. What does the superior temporal gyrus concern with? And what is its other name? Broca's area, or the motor speech area, lies just above the lateral sulcus. It controls the movements employed in speech. It is dominant in the left hemisphere in right-handed persons and in the right hemisphere in left-handed persons. What is Broca's area function? Where is Broca's area dominant in a right- handed person?
  • 14. Figure 1-10 Brain viewed from its right lateral aspect.
  • 15. Figure 8-4 Functional localization of the cerebral cortex. A: Lateral view of the left cerebral hemisphere.
  • 16. The visual area is situated on the posterior pole and medial aspect of the cerebral hemisphere in the region of the calcarineّ ‫ي‬ِ‫ز‬‫ما‬ْ‫ه‬ِ‫م‬‫ال‬ sulcus. It is the receiving area for visual impressions. The cavity present within each cerebral hemisphere is called the lateral ventricle. The lateral ventricles communicate with the third ventricle through the interventricular foramina.
  • 17. Figure 7-14 Ventricular cavities of the brain. A: Lateral view.
  • 18. Diencephalonُّ ‫ني‬ْ‫ي‬‫اغُّالب‬ِ‫م‬ِ‫د‬‫ال‬ The diencephalon is almost completely hidden from the surface of the brain. It consists of a dorsal thalamus and a ventral hypothalamus. The thalamus is a large mass of gray matter that lies on either side of the third ventricle. The activities of the thalamus are closely related to that of the cerebral cortex and damage to the thalamus causes great loss of cerebral function.
  • 19.
  • 20. Thalamus is the great relay station on the afferent sensory pathway to the cerebral cortex. The thalamus is situated on each side of the third ventricle. The anterior end of the thalamus is narrow and rounded and forms the posterior boundary of the interventricular‫َات‬‫ن‬‫ي‬َ‫ط‬ُ‫ب‬‫ُّال‬َ‫َين‬‫ب‬ foramen. The posterior end is expanded to form the pulvinar ُّ ُ‫َة‬‫د‬‫سا‬ِ‫و‬.
  • 21.
  • 22.  The medial surface of the thalamus forms the superior part of the lateral wall of the third ventricle and is usually connected to the opposite thalamus by a band of gray matter, the interthalamic connection (interthalamic adhesion‫ن‬ْ‫ي‬َ‫د‬‫ها‬ِ‫م‬‫ُّال‬َ‫ن‬ْ‫ي‬َ‫ب‬ُُّ‫ة‬َ‫صاق‬ِ‫ت‬ْ‫)االل‬.  The lateral surface of the thalamus is separated from the lentiform nucleus‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬‫النواةُّالعدس‬ by the very important band of white matter called the internal capsule ّ ُ‫ة‬َ‫ر‬ِ‫ئ‬‫ّالغا‬ُ‫ة‬َ‫ظ‬َ‫ف‬ْ‫ح‬ِ‫م‬‫ال‬. The thalamus is a very important cell station that receives the main sensory tracts (except the olfactory pathway).
  • 23. Thalamus should be regarded as a station where much of the information is integrated and relayed to the cerebral cortex and many other subcortical regions. It also plays a key role in the integration of visceral and somatic functions.
  • 24. The pineal gland is a small, conical structure that is attached by the pineal stalk ُّ َ‫ب‬‫َو‬‫ن‬َّ‫ص‬‫ُّال‬ُ‫ة‬َ‫ق‬‫َي‬‫و‬ ُّ ‫الس‬ ‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬ِ‫ر‬ to the diencephalon. It projects backward so that it lies posterior to the midbrain. pineal gland is now recognized as an important endocrine gland capable of influencing the activities of the pituitary gland, the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas, the parathyroids, the adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla, and the gonads.
  • 25. The following structures are found in the floor of the third ventricle from before backward:  the optic chiasma is a flattened bundle of nerve fibers situated at the junction of the anterior wall and floor of the third ventricle,  the tuber cinereum‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬ِ‫د‬‫ما‬َّ‫ر‬‫ُّال‬ُ‫َة‬‫ب‬َ‫د‬َ‫ح‬‫ال‬ is a convex mass of gray matter. It is continuous inferiorly with the infundibulum.  The infundibulumُّ ُ‫ع‬ْ‫م‬ِ‫ق‬‫ال‬ is hollow and becomes continuous with the posterior lobe of the hypophysis cerebri.  The mammillary bodies‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬ِ‫م‬َ‫َل‬‫ح‬‫ُّال‬ُ‫سام‬ْ‫ج‬َ‫األ‬ are two small hemispherical bodies situated side by side posterior to the tuber cinereum and the posterior perforated substance ُّ ُ‫ة‬َ‫ب‬َّ‫ق‬َ‫ث‬ُ‫م‬‫ُّال‬ُ‫ة‬َّ‫د‬‫الما‬ ‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬‫ف‬ْ‫ل‬َ‫خ‬‫ال‬.
  • 26.
  • 27. The third ventricle is a slitlike cleft between the two thalami. It communicates anteriorly with the lateral ventricles through the interventricular foramina (foramina of Monro), and it communicates posteriorly with the fourth ventricle through the cerebral aqueductُُّ‫ل‬‫َسا‬‫م‬‫ال‬ ُّ ‫ماغي‬ِ‫الد‬.
  • 28. Lateral Ventricles There are two lateral ventricles, and one is present in each cerebral hemisphere. Each ventricle is a roughly C-shaped cavity lined with ependyma‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬ِ‫ب‬َ‫ص‬َ‫ع‬‫ُّال‬ُ‫ة‬َ‫ن‬‫طا‬ِ‫ب‬‫ال‬ and filled with cerebrospinal fluid. The lateral ventricle may be divided into a body, which occupies the parietal lobe, and from which anterior, posterior, and inferior horns extend into the frontal, occipital, and temporal lobes, respectively.
  • 29.
  • 30.
  • 31. The lateral ventricle communicates with the cavity of the third ventricle through the interventricular foramen. This opening, which lies in the anterior part of the medial wall of the lateral ventricle, is bounded: • anteriorly by the anterior column of the fornixُُّ‫و‬ْ‫ب‬َ‫ق‬‫ال‬, • and posteriorly by the anterior end of the thalamus.
  • 32. Basal Nuclei‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬ِ‫د‬ِ‫ع‬‫َىُّالقا‬‫و‬َّ‫ن‬‫ال‬ The term basal nuclei (basal ganglia) is applied to a collection of masses of gray matter situated within each cerebral hemisphere. They are the corpus striatum ُِّ‫م‬ ْ ‫س‬ِ‫ج‬‫ال‬ ‫ط‬َّ‫ط‬َ‫خ‬ُ‫م‬‫ال‬ , the amygdaloid nucleus‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬ِ‫ن‬‫وزا‬َّ‫ُّالل‬ُ‫واة‬َّ‫ن‬‫ال‬, and the claustrum ‫ق‬ِ‫ئ‬‫العا‬. The corpus striatum is situated lateral to the thalamus. It is almost completely divided by a band of nerve fibers, the internal capsule, into the caudate‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬ِ‫ب‬َ‫ن‬َّ‫الذ‬ nucleus and the lentiform‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬‫العدس‬ nucleus.
  • 33. Horizontal section of the cerebrum, as seen from above, showing the relationship between the lentiform nucleus, the caudate nucleus, the thalamus, and the internal capsule.
  • 34. The caudate nucleus, a large C-shaped mass of gray matter that is closely related to the lateral ventricle, lies lateral to the thalamus. The lateral surface of the nucleus is related to the internal capsule, which separates it from the lentiform nucleus.
  • 35. The lentiform nucleus is a wedge-shaped mass of gray matter whose broad convex base is directed laterally and its blade medially. It is buried deep in the white matter of the cerebral hemisphere and is related medially to the internal capsule, which separates it from the caudate nucleus and the thalamus. The lentiform nucleus is related laterally to a thin sheet of white matter, the external capsule ُّ ُ‫ة‬َ‫ظ‬َ‫ف‬ْ‫ح‬ِ‫م‬‫ال‬ ‫ة‬َ‫ر‬ِ‫ه‬‫ا‬َّ‫الظ‬ , that separates it from a thin sheet of gray matter, called the claustrum.
  • 36. The Lentiform nucleus The claustrum, in turn, separates the external capsule from the subcortical white matter of the insula‫ة‬َ‫ر‬‫َزي‬‫ج‬‫ال‬. Inferiorly at its anterior end, the lentiform nucleus is continuous with the caudate nucleus. The function of the corpus striatum is concerned with muscular movement, which is accomplished by controlling the cerebral cortex.
  • 37. The amygdaloid nucleus is situated in the temporal lobe close to the uncusُّ ُ‫ف‬َ‫ق‬ْ‫ع‬ِ‫م‬. The amygdaloid nucleus is considered part of the limbicُّ‫ي‬ِ‫ف‬‫و‬ُ‫الح‬ system. The claustrum is a thin sheet of gray matter that is separated from the lateral surface of the lentiform nucleus by the external capsule. Lateral to the claustrum is the subcortical white matter of the insula. The function of the claustrum is unknown.
  • 38. White Matter of the Cerebral Hemispheres The white matter is composed of myelinated nerve fibers of different diameters supported by neuroglia. The nerve fibers may be classified into three groups according to their connections: (1) commissural fibers ٌُّ‫ياف‬ْ‫ل‬َ‫أ‬ ‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬ِ‫وار‬ِ‫ص‬ , (2) associationُّ‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬ِ‫ط‬ُ‫ب‬‫را‬َ‫ت‬ fibers, and (3) projection ‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬ِ‫ط‬‫قا‬ ْ ‫س‬ِ‫إ‬ fibers. A- Commissure fibers essentially connect corresponding regions of the two hemispheres. They are as follows: the corpus callosum, the anterior commissureُُّ‫ر‬‫وا‬ِ‫الص‬, the posterior commissure, the fornix, and the habenular commissure.
  • 39. Commissure fibers 1-The corpus callosum, the largest commissure of the brain, connects the two cerebral hemispheres. It lies at the bottom of the longitudinal fissure. It is divided into the rostrumُّ ُ‫ر‬‫قا‬ْ‫ن‬ِ‫م‬, the genuُُّ‫ة‬َ‫ب‬ْ‫ك‬ُ‫ر‬, the body, and the spleniumُّ ُ‫ريط‬ َ ‫ش‬. 2-The anterior commissure is a small bundle of nerve fibers that crosses the midline in the lamina terminalisُّ‫ة‬َّ‫ي‬ِ‫ئ‬‫ها‬ِ‫ت‬ْ‫ن‬‫ُّاال‬ُ‫َة‬‫ح‬‫في‬َّ‫ص‬‫ال‬.
  • 40. Commissure fibers 3-The posterior commissure is a bundle of nerve fibers that crosses the midline immediately above the opening of the cerebral aqueduct into the third ventricle. 4-The fornix is composed of myelinated nerve fibers and constitutes the efferent system of the hippocampus that passes to the mammillary bodies of the hypothalamus. 5-The habenular commissure is a small bundle of nerve fibers that crosses the midline in the superior part of the root of the pineal stalk.
  • 41. B-Association fibers are nerve fibers that essentially connect various cortical regions within the same hemisphere and may be divided into short and long groups. C-Projection Fibers afferent and efferent nerve fibers passing to and from the brainstem to the entire cerebral cortex must travel between large nuclear masses of gray matter within the cerebral hemisphere.
