Head Cook At Weddings And Funerals Characters
In the short story, "Head Cook at Weddings and Funerals" by Vi Plotnikoff, Marusa is a young,
independent girl who is driven to get what she wants. She is the epitome of "perfect" in some eyes,
however we find out that her character is much more than just a pretty face. Though she is a flat
character and we do not know much about her, she undergoes an important change caused by a
conflict, thus becoming a dynamic character.
Growing up, we are expected to follow many traditions. Marusa's mother, Aunt Florence, expects
Marusa to marry into a good family because "she knows her daughter will be taken care of for the
rest of her life." (1). Aunt Florence expects Marusa to wear a dress that she made; but Marusa
stubbornly refuses to do so. Without telling others, she buys a dress that she likes using her fiancés
money, thus starting a conflict. This conflict breaks down her "strong and superior" façade, therefore
changing our perspective of her character. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ana describes her as "extraordinarily pretty with her dark curls, sparkling brown eyes, and tiny
figure." (5). Ana envies Marusa by saying that she feels "awkward and plain next to her" (5). Marusa
is represented as a popular girl that has boys lining up just to meet her. We see this kind of character
in our daily lives, as the pretty girl who has a "perfect life." However, these characters are much
more dense and have many more parts to them; some that are not so perfect. Slowly, we find out
more about Marusa's character, like her two–faced attitude and her need for approval. We learn that
she is not as perfect as we had thought she

Essay The Doukhobors, Sons of Freedom and the Canadian...
The "Sons of Freedom" are a small radical group that diverged from a religious sect known as the
Doukhobors. This zealous and revivalist subsect evolved from the Doukhobors only to gain the
government's attention for their extremely radical acts. They have initiated bombings, arson, nudist
parades, and hunger strikes, all in protest to the land ownership and registration laws of Canada.
Such obscene and violent demonstrations have caused a great deal of conflict between the Sons of
Freedom and the Canadian government's legal system and have also generated much public
resentment. However, should the State of Canada have imposed laws upon this minority group that
blatantly conflicted with their religious beliefs?
The Doukhobors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One law, requiring an oath of allegiance to the Crown (to secure their land ownership) caused
problems since they believed allegiance should only be pledged to God. They also wished for better
land provisions similar to those for Indians. Frustrated Doukhobors thus formed the "Sons of God",
which eventually became the radical Sons of Freedom. In fact, their lifestyle was quite out of place
in the prairies. They actually used men and women to pull wagons in an attempt to emancipate
animals and they travelled barefoot on pilgrimages in search of a Promised Land, which seemed
rather odd to Canadian citizens. Other bizarre religious beliefs seemed to bring controversy such as
their disapproval of the Canadian laws regarding marriage, birth and death registration. Four
Doukhobor men were even sentenced to three months imprisonment for failing to register a death.
The Dominion Land Act which required registration of the land also caused problems for the
Doukhobors. While this conflicted with their religious beliefs regarding owning private property,
many reluctantly signed the registration. The Sons of Freedom felt such an act was causing the other
Doukhobors to be secularised into Canadian society. In response to this, the Sons of Freedom began
to evangelise in the nude during the spring of 1903, starting a revivalist movement.

The Cultural Differences In The Canadian Society During...
There were three main groups that suffered and struggled through many obstacles and a lot of
people setting them back; women, First Nations people, and immigrants and minorities. This
prejudice caused a significant negative impact on the Canadian society during the 1920s. In the
roaring twenties, many people believed that only white men should be treated with any respect
because that was the status quo at the time. The status of women was improving as some women got
the right to vote, a woman was elected a member of parliament, and women were now legally
considered "persons", but women were still treated horribly and with little respect or dignity. The
First Nations people as a whole were greatly mistreated because of the federal government and the
non–first nations, Canadians believed that the First Nations people would be more content, giving
up their religion, heritage, and culture and become more mainstream Canadian Christian. In
addition, immigrants and minorities in Canada during this time also suffered greatly because of the
prejudice against them and the fact that the Canadian government frowned upon all immigration that
was not from another Commonwealth country, a European country, or did not involve white
Americans. First of all when women started to do the same thing men did that had much of the
Canadian population skeptical and afraid that these activities would make the women more
masculine and nobody wanted that to happen. "Many spectators attended the game[New Glasgow
women's club defeated the Glacé Bay] out of curiosity to find out if the girls could keep house and
cook well enough to attract a husband"(Winnick, 40). Of course Canadian society mocked women
who tried to step out of their comfort zones and try something new that could change the way people
viewed women. Their perception of women as helpless and comparing them to thieves and minority
groups rather than as equally intelligent and capable of the same things as the white men if not
more. The status quo influenced women to stay fit, healthy, and good looking. The media made
women think that the ideal body was thin and that they should be wearing a lot of makeup, but no
one wanted them to be more like men at the time; strong and a

B C Culture Essay
Culture: B.C is very diverse, with cultures including Chinese, who immigrated to Canada to help
build the Canadian Pacific Railway, Doukhobors, Russians who were banned from Russia because
they refused to fight and immigrated here, and First Nations. Some of the sports played there include
Fishing, Climbing, Biking, Hockey, and skiing.
Landscape: B.C.'s landscapes include rocky coastlines, sandy beaches, forests, lakes, mountains,
inland deserts and grassy plains. Most of B.C. is rough and unexplored, with few towns and roads.
About half of the population of B.C. lives in the southern part of the province. A lot of B.C.'s forests
are unmapped and unexplored.
Natural Resources: Some of the Natural resources include: Lumber, Water, Seafood, Minerals such
as Gold, Silver, Zinc and Lead, Oil and Natural Gas, and Coal.
Urban/Rural: In 2011, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
has a lot of Vegetation because some of it used to be a rainforest or still are (Like Vancouver), and I
can only name a few, because an entire list of about ½ of the Vegetation would take up about 5
pages, so some of the Vegetation are: Pine Trees, Birch Trees, ferns, and lots and lots of grass.
Climate: Summers on the coast are warm, with daytime temperatures around 20°C, but lots of rain
(My grandparents live in Vancouver, so we visit them for about a week every year, and about 3 of
the 7 days are rainy.) B.C.'s coastal regions have the mildest winters in all of Canada. The more
Central regions of the province have hotter summers, with temperatures sometimes getting to 30°C
or more. Winters are colder and snowier than in coastal regions. In the north, winters are long and
cold with lots of snow, and summers are short.
First Nations Perspective: Just Recently, The first Nations in B.C. got angry at the Nestle water
company because all of a sudden, The Nestle company was saying that it was the British
Columbian's, but the water they used was actually the First Nations. Overall, I think that the First

Persuasive Essay About Refugees
Refugees are people who are forced to flee a country because of persecution or because of serious
human rights abuses. Refugees can help with things like the economy and by letting in refugees we
can prove to Isis that we are not scared of them. Although it can be unsafe trusting machines to
detect anything wrong, we are letting in families that need help, not singular people that are just
looking for a place to live. Should refugees be allowed to come into a country that is peaceful and
safe?
In the late 19 century, early 20th century Refugees from Russia, especially Jews, Mennonites and
Doukhobors, settled in Canada. The world had different opinions on this matter, but most of the
world took it as an advantage. The world took it as an advantage because the refugees can help and
boost the economy for the better. (Tess Fuller 1) The refugees come from different places all around
the world meaning that they come from different work environments. People from different
countries know different jobs better so that would help our economy because instead of having
people working in one type of job we would have different people from different countries be able
to come and help us with the jobs that we are not so strong at doing. Refugees can help with jobs
like plumbers, construction workers, and accountants, while we are good at jobs like doctors, social
workers, and teachers. By letting the refugees come into our country it would give more of a
diversity to the jobs we are working in right now. It would help benefit the world because there are a
lot of jobs on high demand and by letting them come into our country they can help us fill those jobs
up.
One problem with letting in refugees is the security risk. Refugees are coming in from dangerous
countries like Syria, Iraq, and countries in the middle east. The reason they are leaving is because of
safety reasons, but how do we know that they are not going to create a safety risk in our country.
Refugees have to go through a lot of tests and they get searched before they enter the country, but
can we trust the machines to detect anything that create a security risk?(Huffington Post 2) . Letting
in the refugees can create terror acts just like what is happening in

The status quo influenced women to stay fit, healthy, and good looking. The media made women think that the ideal body was thin and that they should be wearing a lot of makeup, but no one wanted them to be more like men at the time; strong and a ... Some of the sports played there include Fishing, Climbing, Biking, Hockey, and skiing. Landscape: B.C.'s landscapes include rocky coastlines, sandy beaches, forests, lakes, mountains, inland deserts and grassy plains. Most of B.C. is rough and unexplored, with few towns and roads. Climate: Summers on the coast are warm, with daytime temperatures around 20°C, but lots of rain (My grandparents live in Vancouver, so we visit them for about a week every year, and about 3 of the 7 days are rainy.) • 12. Persuasive Essay About Refugees Refugees are people who are forced to flee a country because of persecution or because of serious human rights abuses. Refugees can help with things like the economy and by letting in refugees we can prove to Isis that we are not scared of them. Although it can be unsafe trusting machines to detect anything wrong, we are letting in families that need help, not singular people that are just looking for a place to live. Should refugees be allowed to come into a country that is peaceful and safe? In the late 19 century, early 20th century Refugees from Russia, especially Jews, Mennonites and Doukhobors, settled in Canada. The world had different opinions on this matter, but most of the world took it as an advantage. The world took it as an advantage because the refugees can help and boost the economy for the better. (Tess Fuller 1) The refugees come from different places all around the world meaning that they come from different work environments. People from different countries know different jobs better so that would help our economy because instead of having people working in one type of job we would have different people from different countries be able to come and help us with the jobs that we are not so strong at doing. Refugees can help with jobs like plumbers, construction workers, and accountants, while we are good at jobs like doctors, social workers, and teachers. By letting the refugees come into our country it would give more of a diversity to the jobs we are working in right now. It would help benefit the world because there are a lot of jobs on high demand and by letting them come into our country they can help us fill those jobs up. One problem with letting in refugees is the security risk. Refugees are coming in from dangerous countries like Syria, Iraq, and countries in the middle east. The reason they are leaving is because of safety reasons, but how do we know that they are not going to create a safety risk in our country. Refugees have to go through a lot of tests and they get searched before they enter the country, but can we trust the machines to detect anything that create a security risk?(Huffington Post 2) . Letting in the refugees can create terror acts just like what is happening in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
