WRITING GUIDELINES
1> Use a comma after long introductory prepositional phrase:
Before noon, we left town.
2> Use a comma after an introductory word:
Well, I am not really sure.
3> Use a comma after an introductory dependent clause:
When I had finished the work, I went to bed.
4> Use a comma after an introductory verbal phrase:
Driving across the street, we saw an elephant.
5> In compound sentence, if sentence is long then a comma can be added before
conjunction:
I came late in the office, but I started session on time.
6> Semicolon is mandatory if two sentences are not connected with conjunction:
Gaurang is a genius; his neighbour is cool.
7> Use a comma to separate the items of a list:
I want to read, to play, and to relax.
He bought milk, bread, and jam.
8> Use a comma when two adjectives are used, and they are not relational:
He has tall, handsome brother.
There is a large green table cloth.
9> Use a comma to separate an unnecessary clause or part of sentence:
Pratik, who sits beside Pankaj, will be married soon.
10> Use a colon to separate two independent sentences when the second one
explains the first:
Gandhiji believed in simple living: he wore a dhoti, and lived in a small house.
11> Use a semicolon, if the sentence has many comma:
.Having eaten the pudding, a terrible mixture, my sister became ill; but there were no
doctors nearby.
12> Never use a comma before “that”:
Did you say that you had called three times:
13> Never use a comma between connecting words connecting two items,
Ram and Shyam are brothers.
The team practiced hard and played well.
14> A dash can be used to emphasize more, or in place of colon:
The athlete has one outstanding quality - he has good strength.
He runs a successful business - a business which was criticized in the past.
15> Hyphen can be used as a word divider in between two lines:
They are laying new elec-
tricity cables in our area.
16> When to use first letter as capital:
- To begin with a new sentence
- To write all nouns or pronouns referring to God
O Master, we thank you.
- To write the pronoun “I”
- To address father, mother, uncle, aunt, etc…
When will Uncle and Aunt arrive?
- For writing any part of a country or world
South India, Far East, etc…
- Name of organization, degree and position held by people
Mr. A . R. Shah was a B.E. student of Gujarat University, Ahmedabad. He is serving
as Embedded Engineer at Volansys.
- A few more cases…. Please explore Google!!
Note: We have mentioned around 30% useful rules out of what English offers!!
Example Letter
My Friend’s Daily Schedule in Working Days
My friend’s name is Priyal Parikh. I am writing some brief on his daily schedule in this letter.
He wakes up around 6:30 AM in the morning. He is very conscious about his health, so after brushing his teeth, he walks in
a garden for around 30 minutes. As he is living alone in the room, he seldom does his household work too. Thereafter, he
takes a bath and gets ready to leave for the job. He reaches at his workplace around 9:30 AM in the morning.
He is a very sincere and a career oriented person, so he starts his working immediately after reaching the office. He usually
takes his lunch before 2:00 PM in the morning. After having lunch, he plays table tennis for 30 minutes before continuing his
work. He often leaves his office after 6:30 PM.
He reaches his room at around 7:00 PM in the evening and then he starts cooking for himself as he does not like to rely on
outside food. He usually becomes free from his daily activities at around 8:30 PM. Afterwards, he watches shows on
television or a movie on his PC. He seldom calls his family as he is not living with them. He frequently goes to the bed
around 10:30 PM.
