WHAT IS A STANDING WAVE?
A standing wave is a wave is the result of
an interference between two waves, this
occurs when two waves of the same
frequency interfere with one another when
they are traveling in opposite directions.
WHAT QUALITIES DO TWO
INTERFERING WAVES THAT CREATE A
STANDING WAVE HAVE IN COMMON?
A) wavelength
B) amplitude
C) frequency
SOLUTION
A, B, C
WHERE DOES MUSIC COME FROM?
The rich sound of a musical instruments results from the fact that a
string or an air column can simultaneously sustain combination of the
possible allowed standing waves.
Musical instruments produce a sound that is composed of many
different frequencies
WIND INSTRUMENTS
These are instruments that rely on the vibrating columns.
STANDING WAVES IN WIND
INSTRUMENTS
Wind instruments produce waves by means of vibrating air columns.
When you blow the air in the tube, the air in the tube starts to vibrate
with the same frequency as your lips. The increase in amplitude is
caused by the resonance, which forms standing waves in the tube.
THESE TWO INSTRUMENTS ARE
THE SAME LENGTH, HOW COME
THE FLUTE PLAYS A HIGHER
NOTE THAN THE CLARINET?
Hint: Pay attention to the ends of both instruments
SOLUTION
The reason the clarinet plays a lower note than the flute is because it
has a closed end.
Flute: Wavelength= 4L, which has two open ends
Clarinet: Wavelength= 2L, one open end and one closed end
