Demographics
Demographics are statistical facts regarding the audience, Age, Gender,
Quantifiable things as opposed to opinions.
Age and Gender
The target audience of people for this production is people aged 16 to 20 how
ever we still believe we should add a small amount of other age groups. The
reason why we targeted this age group is that they are not set in their ways and
are more pliable meaning we can more easily convince them to start recycling and
should we prove successful have a greater impact as their lives will likely be
longer than those who are older. Despite our main audience we still took research
from others so our research would in the end be more rounded and accurate for a
larger age group.
Gender
There was no real intended bias that we was aiming for as the target for us was
age, the reason we decided not to target one gender is we believe that will be
losing too much of the overall audience than the benefits that being more concise
would give us. Despite our attempt to ask an equal number of people for each
gender we still found a small bias towards males. We believe one explanation for
this bias is that as our group was made up entirely of men we felt more
comfortable asking other men than women which despite efforts to compensate
for skewed the results slightly.
Employment Status of Our audience.
Our audience appears to be made of people who are mainly still in full time
education. To me this suggests that people we are aiming are happy to gather
more information and look at video that will help them improve their knowledge
meaning we would be able to add parts of the video which deal mainly with facts.
The reason we would do this is it allows for us to draw in the attention of the large
secondary audience of people and hopeful convince them this is an issue worth
watching the video to the end to better understand. Even if the secondary
audience does not stay for the straight up information segment then we could still
impart the main message in a comedic way that they might remember
nonetheless.
The town of resident of our audience.
Just under 75% of our audience lives in the areas of hainault, fairlop and fulwell.
This information means we will focus our filming to locations inside these areas
the reason that we should pick our locations there is that as the location will be
familiar to the residents they will most likely feel more sympathy with the film at the
end as it will make sure that it strikes close to home. Additionally this works well
for us as these are areas we can reach quickly and with ease which means we will
not be required to spend as much time traveling to a site this means we will be
able to spend additional time on more important things such as filming or using the
saved time later when we are editing.
Do people find recycling an important issue and do they act
on it.
We took these test’s to find out two things. The first of these things was to find out
how many people cared about recycling and found it an issue they they were
interested in as this would tell us if there is an interest from people about our topic.
We also asked people if they recycled, their was two reasons why we asked these
similar questions. The first of these reasons was to see if their was people who
already cared about the issue but still did not recycle that we could focus on which
we discovered there was not, and the secondary purpose of this was it allowed for
us to see if people were faking answers as if we had a large difference in the two
results it could indicate people were saying yes to look good.
Psychographics
Psychographics are the categorisation of people's opinions, likes and dislikes
instead of abject facts, for instance, asking someone their favorite genre of film is
a physiographic, while asking someone their age is a demographic.
Favorite genre
Though it was assumed we would create
some sort of documentary, it was not
specifically stated whether we needed to do a documtery, it just stated a social
action project, in our case, we felt we
would reach more people if we used a
different genre
Methods of consuming media
DIfferent methods of consuming media exist,
meaning in our questionnaire, we decided to
put a question regarding how people prefer to
consume media, so in our release, we can put
it on a format that benefits the most people,
and reaches the largest audience possible.
Choice of Issue
We picked a small group of possible
issues we found important, and put all
of them on the questionnaire, we felt
letting the audience decide on what
issue is most important meant that we
would both reach a larger target audience and also that we would help with the
issues that the community found the most important.
Television
We asked this question on our
questionnaire to understand the
consumption habits of our audience. By
asking this question we are able to work
out how long we have our audiences
attention for. The largest group watch
around 3 to 5 hours of informative
information which would not be a problem
for our 9 minute documentary, as we will
not have to shorten it for our audiences
benefit.
Importance of Issue
This question is a follow up one for the choice
of issue that should be addressed and whether
they do or do not recycle. As we as a group
feel recycling should be addressed we posed
this question to our audience. Two thirds of the
people asked thought that recycling and waste
management is an issue that should be
followed up.
Opinions on Documentaries
We asked our audience this question to find
out their opinion on documentaries. The
overall result of the question was mixed as
there was an equal number of people that do
and don't like them. This indicates that using
the format of a documentary might alienate a
large amount of the audience.
Documentaries/Tv programmes
A documentary of TV program about the issue is an easy way to consume the
information regarding the issue, while still being able to convey the message. It
also has the advantage of being able to create atmosphere and mood, pushing
the message better than it would be able to otherwise. These often have some
form of music, that helps build atmosphere.
One example of a documentary about Recycling is No Impact man, about an
author who tries to make it so his family does not have any carbon impact,
stripping them of cars and electricity, it's a good film to show the impact of global
warming, and what we can do to stop it.
Recycled Life
This documentary focuses on the lives of the large group of people who handle
recycling at the guatemala city dump.
Approach; Expository, Observational,Participatory
It is done in an Expository fashion, with a presenter who interviews members of
the dump, its non interview shots are of things the workers are talking about, such
as children picking up old toys, the fire, or specific dangers of working in the dump.
Being a documentary, it does not have a traditional narrative, nor themes. It
focuses often on the freedom of the people who live their, but also the danger and
squalor of the dump, giving a sort of thematic feeling to it, but does not try to
convey a message though theming, rather than just tell the truth of life in the
dump.
Narrative themes
Camera Techniques; Movement, shots
Mostly static and panning shots to show the dump and people living their lives.
Sometimes it uses wide establishing shots to show specific locations, such as the
Coffee farms or the living areas.
The Non-diegetic sounds are mostly the sounds of music and narration. The
diegetic sounds are the dump workers talking, and the general sounds of people
going about their work.
Sound ,Diagetic/Non diagetic
Editing, Continuity, Pace, FX
Visual editing mostly consists of voiceovers, editing the presenter talking over
images or videos of the dump, several moments occur when someone is talking
while images show up on the screen, or videos of life in the dump. The editing is
rudimentary in that way, but it also cuts to other sources of videos such as news
reports.
As a documentary, most of the lighting and mise en scene is natural, the director
will sometimes purposely position speakers and filmers in a certain place to
illustrate a point. Like putting their back to the dump when they are talking about
the dirtiness of it to show it while it is being talked about
Mise en scene, location, lighting etc
Theories, Uses & gratification (Blumler Katz)
This fulfils the need for information and human interaction, it both gives
information about the lives of these people, while showing you the human side,
fulfilling human need for interaction and information, as most documentaries do.
Starts off with the lives of these people, and how they help the city, It then moves
on to the dangers of the job, the possibility of getting buried, upsetting the
narrative structure. It then talks about how children were then looked after,
bringing it back to equilibrium, before the final issue, the methane buildup resulting
in the fire. The fire returns us to a new equilibrium, as the government put more
effort into protecting the dump and it citizens after the fire.
Narrative structure(Todorov)
Encoding & Decoding (Stuart hall)
The news style of steady camera gives an objective view, Combined with the
traditional news interview formats means we see this quite simply, with little
opinion put on it.
the traditional music alludes to the traditional way of life, and how they are forced
to live life in poverty
The documentary shows the effects of the garbage fires on the community as a
whole , Recycled life shows how Guatamala city was affected by the negligence of
the government regarding the recycling areas.
