Li-Fi is a new wireless technology to provide
the connectivity with in localized network environment.
The main principle of this technology is we can transmit
the data using light illumination by using light-emitting
diodes where radio frequency is media in Wi-Fi and
LED bulb light intensity is faster than human eye can
follow. Prof Harald Haas an expert in optical wireless
communications at the University of Edinburgh, he was
demonstrated how an LED bulb equipped with signal
processing technology could stream a high-definition
video to a computer. By using this technology a one-watt
LED light bulb would be enough to provide net
connectivity to four computers. He coined the term
"light fidelity" or li-fi and set up a private company,
Pure VLC, to exploit the technology. . He envisions a
future where data for laptops, smart phones, and tablets
is transmitted through the light in a room. And security
would be snap – if you can’t see the light, you can’t
access the data.

4. Introduction to Li-Fi
Li-Fi basically known as “Light Fidelity” is an outcome of 21st
century.
The basic ideology behind this technology is that the data can
be transmitted through the LED light whose intensity varies even
faster than the Human-eyes.
As the transmission of the data takes place through the light
emitting diodes the amount is comparatively small.
In modern times, it is called as the optimized version of WI-FI
.The advantageous thing is the wireless communication which
decreases the cost enormously.

5. Introduction(Cont….)
there are more and more devices coming up day-by-day
the signals of Wi-Fi are being clogged up due to
heavy traffic, there arised a need for an error free
transmission technology. And the solution to this
problem was the Li-Fi technology.
With LIFI is possible to encode the data into the light
by varying the rate at which the LED’s flicker ON and
OFF which is too quickly to be noticed by the human
eye.

7. History of Li-Fi
Professor Harald Haas, from the University
of Edinburgh in the UK, is widely recognised
as the original founder of Li-Fi. He coined
the term Li- Fi and is Chair man of Mobile
Communications at the University of
Edinburgh and co-founder of pure LiFi.
The consortium believes it is possible to
achieve more than 10Gbps speed using this
optical wireless technology also known as
Li-Fi.
It gets affected if line of sight is not used, the
speed of data transmission will reduce or
data transmission will stop.
7
8. Histroy(cont…)
PureLiFi, formerly pureVLC, is an original
equipment manufacturer (OEM) firm set up to
commercialize Li-Fi products for integration with
existing LED-lighting systems.
Philips lighting company has
developed a VLC system for shoppers
at stores. They have to download an app on
their smartphone and then their smartphone
works with the LEDs in the store. The LEDs can
pinpoint where they are at in the store and give
them corresponding coupons and information
based on where aisle they are on and what they
are looking at.
8
10. Present Scenario
10
More than 1.8 Million more than 5 Billion
Radio Spectrum is congested but the demand for wireless data double each
year .Every thing, it seems want to use wireless data but the capacity is
drying up.
13. Working of Li-Fi
This fantabulous idea first striked the mind of Haraald Haas from
University of Edinburgh, UK, in his TED Global talk on VLC.His idea was
very simple that if the LED is “on” then the digital 1 can be transmitted
and if the led is “off” then the digital 0 can be transmitted.Led‟s can be
switched on and off very quick.
For transmitting data this way all that we require is LED‟s and controller
that code data into LED‟s.Parallel data transmission can be done by
using array of LED‟s or by using red, green, blue LED‟s to alter light
frequency with the frequency of different data channel.
Advancements and enhancements in this field generate a speed of 10
gbps! But amazingly fast data rates and lowering band widths are not the
only reasons that enhance this technology.
13
14. Working(Cont…)
Lifi usually is based on light and so it can be probably
implemented in articrafts and hospitals that are prone to
inference from radio waves.unlike Wi-Fi Li-Fi can work even
under-water which makes it more advantageous for military
operations.
Radio waves are replaced by light waves in data transmission
called Li- Fi.
The data transmission is done through binary codes which
involve switching on LED can be done by logic 1 and switch off
using logic 0.
14
21. In Education Systems:
Li-Fi is the latest technology that can provide fastest speed
internet access.
21
22. In Medical Application
Operation theatres (OTs) do not allow Wi-
Fi due to radiation concerns. Usage of Wi-
Fi at hospitals interferes with the mobile
and pc which blocks the signals for
monitoring equipments. So, it may be
hazardous to the patient's health.
To overcome this and to make OT tech
savvy Li-Fi can be used to accessing
internet and to control medical
equipments. This can even be beneficial
for robotic surgeries and other automated
procedures.
22
23. Cheaper Internet in Aircraft
The passengers travelling in aircrafts get access to low
speed internet at a very high rate. Also Wi-Fi is not
used because it may interfere with the navigational
systems of the pilots.
In aircrafts Li-Fi can be used for data transmission. Li-
Fi can easily provide high speed internet via every light
source such as overhead reading bulb, etc. present
inside the airplane.
23
25. Replacement of other technologies
Li-Fi does’t work using radio waves. So, it can be easily
used in the places where Bluetooth, infrared, Wi-Fi, etc. are
banned.
25
26. Advantages of Li-Fi
High Security
Easy To Use
Fast Data Transfer
Reliable
Harmless ness
Low Cost
26
27. Some Disadvantages of Li-Fi
Light can’t pass through objects.
Connectivity while moving.
Interferences from external light sources like sun light,
normal bulbs, and opaque materials in the path of
transmission will cause interruption in the
communication.
27
28. Conclusion
The possibilities are numerous and can be explored further.
If This technology can be put into practical use, every bulb
can be used something like a Wi-Fi hotspot to transmit
wireless data and we will proceed toward the cleaner,
greener, safer and brighter future.
