Introduction
Over the recent past, there has been an enormous revolution in
the technological industry in terms of computing and
communications. This has been due to a reduction
the costs of communication because of the technological
advances and increased competition in the technological sector
that has in turn reduced the cost of communication
. Moore’s
states that the production of microchips is on the double rise
every one and half years. In the current society, innovations
made in the technological industry are bringing about a full
range
and the policy makers are actually working on the ways of
resolving the effects to do with economic productivity (Berque,
Prey, Reed & WIPTE, 2006).
Technology can there be seen as a discrete power with a
significant influence, and the impacts of technology are a
metaphor. It is there seen as a dynamic force that causes
collisions and impacts on the society. Mechanically, technology
can be viewed as to be having an impact on the society as it
reinforces that technological systems have an independent
existence and appears to be having a mass, velocity and a
momentum of its own, which drives technology to influence on
the society (Karacapilidis, & Raisinghani, 2012).
Thesis Statement
The focus of this study is to establish and interpret the
principles of technology and the effects of the technological
advancements on the society socially, economically, and
politically. The study will take a course of an extensive
consultation and seeking data through questionnaires and face-
to-face interviews with the respondents. In an attempt to extract
a reliable data, the study will use direct interviews more often
to establish the level of reality in the responses of the
interviewed individuals as this will help in obtaining a more
accurate data. Whereas some countries have not fully embrace
the use of technology, the dynamism of the world has been
driven by technology. In this study, two perspectives have been
contrasted, and these are; the impacts caused by technology
education in teaching and about the technology on the society
(Johnston & Barker, 2002).
Background to the study
Science, technology, and the society are three elements that
have been expanding over an extended period and this
development started in the year 1960. In the technological view,
they history of technology tries to examine technology in its
social context. Starting in the early 1960s, some historians
questioned the technological determinism, and some of them
started developing contextual approaches to the history of the
medicine. In the late 1960s, the student and faculty social
movements and the European universities starting working for
change rather than dispassionate and in the mid 1980 suit was
now a decisive moment in the development of the STS and
many decided to put their focus on the effects of technology on
the society (MacKenzie and Wajcman , 1985). This foundation
was, therefore, intellectual foundation of the field of social
construction and technology. In more recently there has been an
associated turn to ecology, nature and the materiality in
general(Johnston & Barker, 2002).
Definition of terms
Technology: this is the sum of the ways in which social groups
provide themselves with the
Material objects of their civilization as they correlate
Impacts: these are the consequences or the effects that are
caused by the advancement in
Technology to the current society
Society: This is a group of people or the individuals that are
affected by the changes in
Technology
Social view: this is a view of the effects in terms of the
consequences it lays on the lives of
Individuals in a society
Impact of Technology on Business models, Commerce and
Market structure
Information technology is found to be so important in the
effects it brings about in reducing the distance in terms of
geographic distribution. Technology enables various types of
works and employment to be decoupled from one another and it
also enables finer division of labor among different countries of
the world which in turn causes affects the relative demand for
various skills in each nation creating a bigger competition
among regions in terms of labor capital and the marketing of
products. Online advertisements and sales have seen a rise in
competition(Berque, Prey, Reed & WIPTE, 2006).
When it comes to communication technology and computers, we
get to see that technology plays an important role in the
marketing, production, and distribution.
Socially, technology has enhanced a close relation and
socialization among different societies in different parts of the
world. It is through online interaction that people have come to
share ideas on business and this has promoted online business
transactions amongst people from different countries hence
promoting the development of the world economies and the
economies of individual countries. E- Commerce is also very
effective at reducing the costs of attracting new customers to
the market through advertisements since online marketing has
reduced the cost because it is cheap(Berque, Prey, Reed &
WIPTE, 2006).
According to the research, the respondents seem not to be
satisfied entirely with technological effect on the market
structure and e-commerce because they require trust on the
adverts that are being used online. Thus, they lay their
preference on the printed adverts or the business circulars that
are being distributed. This is because they have detailed
information about it. In addition, high rate of cyber crime has
led many individuals to lack trust with online transactions
especially with strangers (Berque, Prey, Reed & WIPTE, 2006).
Technology in Workplace and Labor Market
Research studies shows that communication technologies and
computers have enabled people to communicate with one
another in ways complementary to the old traditional one on one
communication and the advancement in technology has
enhanced a 24-hour economic development in different
countries since people can make business communication and
even purchase products online. This survey realized that 40% of
the business transactions being done online are between people
from different countries. This means that global trade has
grown immensely and social interactions between superiors and
subordinates has become more intense because of the social
control issues raise by the use of computerized monitoring
systems but the use of e-mails have lowered the barriers to
communications across different status levels (Berque, Prey,
Reed & WIPTE, 2006).
Many industries are affected by electronic commerce. The
distribution sector is directly affected as e-commerce is a
method of supplying and making delivery of goods and services
and enlarging the market will have a positive impact on jobs
opportunities because people will have an opportunity to work
online and generate income through the internet and technology
can also destroy the creation of jobs and this process underlie
the changes in skill composition of employment.
Education and Technology
The study shows that the advancement in technology has
affected the art of teaching by complementing the construction
traditional classroom rather than eliminating the concept and
despite the existence of the distance learning across the globe,
the internet has made it possible for the better delivery and
coverage of the instructional education. Educational technology
has also advanced considerably, and the use of computers has
laid a positive impact on active learning where the
disadvantaged and the disabled are able to access educational,
facilities online hence expanding their knowledge. It is through
e-learning and the distant learning that these disadvantaged
students are to learn(Berque, Prey, Reed & WIPTE, 2006).
Technological impact on the personal life and society
The research explored the effects of technology on the private
lives and the society. The introduction of then digital forms has
resulted in easier and cheaper production and dissemination of
information and a vast increase in computing, and
communications power has raised concerns on privacy in both
public and private sector. Human tend to apply technological
know-how than the natural knowledge when it comes to
learning. This can be witnessed in the higher learning
institutions where there is an exercise of the e-learning that
enable students to learn through internet. Through this, people
from different parts of the world have been able to communicate
and share which in turn makes it easy for them to acquire
knowledge(Johnston & Barker, 2002).
Conclusion
It has, therefore, been established that, the ongoing changes and
advancements in the technological sector have numerous
economic and social impacts. Some of which are significant and
others are impact negatively on the society and therefore the
issue on technology requires a serious concern and should be
investigated in an attempt to manage its dangerous and
consequences and rational decisions have to be made.

Writing Assignment #3: Research-Supported Essay
Writing Assignment #3 will be a research-supported essay.
Courses that fulfill the General Education Requirements (GERs)
at UMUC all have a common theme—technological
transformations. In following this theme throughout this
semester in WRTG 101, we have read the analyses of various
authors on innovations and technological transformations in
education and in other fields.
In this essay, you will continue this theme of technological
transformations.
You have two choices for your essay topic. Please choose one
of the two choices. Please note that both choices are identical
to the choices you had for writing assignment #2, the cause-
effect essay. You may write on the same topic that you wrote
on for writing assignment #2; however, you may be asked to
adjust the topic in some direction in order to write a more
successful research paper. In addition, of course, you will
expand on the number of sources you use to defend your
argument.
1. Technology and Education
Analyze the impact of a particular trend in technology on
education.
Our discussions in the class up to this point might be helpful for
you as you consider ideas for this topic.
You might analyze any one of the following. These are just
examples. Many approaches are possible for this topic.
a. The potential effects of Massive Open Online Courses
(MOOCs) in higher education. You might focus on a particular
field of study for this choice.
b. The effects of online courses on education. You might focus
on a particular field of study for this choice.
c. The effects of using digital media in online courses
d. The effects of computer use in writing courses or courses in
other disciplines
e. The effects of certain forms of technology on reading skills
or reading habits
f. The potential effects of video games being introduced into
schools and used to help educate students
2. Technology and Your Field of Study
Analyze the impact of technology on a field of study of your
choice.
This option represents a more general approach to the essay.
Some examples might be the following. These are just
examples. Many approaches are possible for this topic.
a. The effects of mobile devices on cybersecurity
b. The effects of the Internet on the field of advertising
c. The effects of cloud computing on a particular business field
d. The effects of the Internet in an area of communication
studies
e. The effects of the Internet on global marketing strategies
f. The effects of a particular type of technology on health care
Outline for the essay
The essay should have the following elements:
· an engaging introductory paragraph. You might even want to
cite sources in the opening paragraph to make your opening
engaging to the reader.
· an effective and clear thesis statement
· a statement of definitions and background on the topic on
which you are writing.
· You will want to define any terms necessary for the reader.
· You may want to provide a historical background on your
topic.
· unified, supported, and coherent body paragraphs that defend
the thesis
· sources cited throughout the body paragraphs that support the
arguments in the paper
· an effective conclusion
· a “references” page that lists the sources cited. The references
should be listed in APA format.
The sources and citation format for this essay
You are required to use at least six sources for this essay.
At least four sources must be acquired through the databases
subscribed to by UMUC’s Information and Library Services. In
addition, at least three sources are to come from scholarly
journals.
Keep in mind that if the sources are scholarly, the argument you
make in the paper will be more persuasive. For this reason, feel
free to use all scholarly sources if you can.
In addition, please feel free to cite more than six sources. You
may find that seven or eight sources (or more) are necessary to
establish your argument and defend your thesis. Please do not
feel limited to using only six sources. Use more if you would
like to or need to.
Please cite your sources and list them at the end of your paper
using APA format.
Length: 1300-1500 words
The strategy for this essay:
This essay can be a persuasive essay, in which you try to
persuade the reader of a particular position. Or it can be an
expository essay that synthesizes material, an essay in which
you give information to the reader and synthesize the different
viewpoints on an issue. The following examples help illustrate
these two approaches.
For a persuasive essay, you could take the position that video
games should be integrated into school science curricula to
teach middle school students. You would cite articles that
demonstrate research studies and other pieces of evidence to
support the claim that video games can enhance instruction in
science classes and will help middle school students learn
science more effectively.
If you write a persuasive essay, please follow one of the
following three options for organization:
· Classical (deductive) approach
· Inductive approach
· Refutation approach
More information on these three styles is given in the following
video tutorial:
http://info.umuc.edu/academicwrtg/WRTG101_101S/wa3_lectur
e_f.html
For an expository essay, you could synthesize information on
this topic, one that summarizes and analyzes the evidence for
and against using video games in school curricula.
Format
· Double space.
· Include a title page with the paper’s title, your name, the date,
and “WRTG 101S.”
· Cite sources using APA format
· Submit your paper as an attachment
What to submit:
Proposal/Prewriting – By the end of Week 4, submit as an
attachment to the assignment folder for Writing Assignment #3.
Please include the following as a proposal:
1. Identify your topic.
2. If you are not planning to use the same topic that you used
for the cause-effect essay, please explain how you came to that
decision. If you are planning to use the same topic, please
include some thoughts on how your research essay will go
beyond what you are writing for the cause-effect essay. (Do you
plan to adjust the topic in any way? Will the topic be exactly
the same with more or different sources?)
3. Do you envision your research essay being expository or
persuasive?
Also include any ideas you have so far from prewriting. Your
prewriting can take many forms. For example, some people like
to do brainstorming/freewriting. Some people may be ready to
work on an outline.
Do not wait for feedback on your proposal/prewriting! Keep
working on your paper, and I will let you know if I have any
concerns.
Rough Draft – By the end of Week 5, submit your rough draft as
an additional attachment to the same assignment folder. Make
this as complete a draft as possible. However, regardless of how
much you have done, submit your rough draft by the end of
Week 5. If there are areas of the paper that you are having
difficulty with, you can ask about them in a note on your rough
draft, and I will try to help.
You will receive feedback on your rough draft during Week 6. I
recommend that you keep working on the paper while you are
waiting for feedback.
Revised Paper – By the end of Week 7, submit your complete,
revised paper as a third attachment to the same assignment
folder. This version will be graded using the following rubric:

Running head TECHNOLOGICAL IMPACT RESEARCH STUDYTECHNOLOGIC.docx

  • 1. Running head: TECHNOLOGICAL IMPACT RESEARCH STUDY TECHNOLOGICAL IMPACT RESEARCH STUDY 2 Technological impact research study Gilberto Rodriguez November 22, 2014 “WRTG 101S” Introduction Over the recent past, there has been an enormous revolution in the technological industry in terms of computing and communications. This has been due to a reduction the costs of communication because of the technological advances and increased competition in the technological sector that has in turn reduced the cost of communication . Moore’s states that the production of microchips is on the double rise every one and half years. In the current society, innovations made in the technological industry are bringing about a full range and the policy makers are actually working on the ways of resolving the effects to do with economic productivity (Berque, Prey, Reed & WIPTE, 2006). Technology can there be seen as a discrete power with a significant influence, and the impacts of technology are a metaphor. It is there seen as a dynamic force that causes collisions and impacts on the society. Mechanically, technology can be viewed as to be having an impact on the society as it
  • 2. reinforces that technological systems have an independent existence and appears to be having a mass, velocity and a momentum of its own, which drives technology to influence on the society (Karacapilidis, & Raisinghani, 2012). Thesis Statement The focus of this study is to establish and interpret the principles of technology and the effects of the technological advancements on the society socially, economically, and politically. The study will take a course of an extensive consultation and seeking data through questionnaires and face- to-face interviews with the respondents. In an attempt to extract a reliable data, the study will use direct interviews more often to establish the level of reality in the responses of the interviewed individuals as this will help in obtaining a more accurate data. Whereas some countries have not fully embrace the use of technology, the dynamism of the world has been driven by technology. In this study, two perspectives have been contrasted, and these are; the impacts caused by technology education in teaching and about the technology on the society (Johnston & Barker, 2002). Background to the study Science, technology, and the society are three elements that have been expanding over an extended period and this development started in the year 1960. In the technological view, they history of technology tries to examine technology in its social context. Starting in the early 1960s, some historians questioned the technological determinism, and some of them started developing contextual approaches to the history of the medicine. In the late 1960s, the student and faculty social movements and the European universities starting working for change rather than dispassionate and in the mid 1980 suit was now a decisive moment in the development of the STS and many decided to put their focus on the effects of technology on the society (MacKenzie and Wajcman , 1985). This foundation
  • 3. was, therefore, intellectual foundation of the field of social construction and technology. In more recently there has been an associated turn to ecology, nature and the materiality in general(Johnston & Barker, 2002). Definition of terms Technology: this is the sum of the ways in which social groups provide themselves with the Material objects of their civilization as they correlate Impacts: these are the consequences or the effects that are caused by the advancement in Technology to the current society Society: This is a group of people or the individuals that are affected by the changes in Technology Social view: this is a view of the effects in terms of the consequences it lays on the lives of Individuals in a society Impact of Technology on Business models, Commerce and Market structure Information technology is found to be so important in the effects it brings about in reducing the distance in terms of geographic distribution. Technology enables various types of works and employment to be decoupled from one another and it also enables finer division of labor among different countries of the world which in turn causes affects the relative demand for various skills in each nation creating a bigger competition among regions in terms of labor capital and the marketing of products. Online advertisements and sales have seen a rise in competition(Berque, Prey, Reed & WIPTE, 2006). When it comes to communication technology and computers, we
  • 4. get to see that technology plays an important role in the marketing, production, and distribution. Socially, technology has enhanced a close relation and socialization among different societies in different parts of the world. It is through online interaction that people have come to share ideas on business and this has promoted online business transactions amongst people from different countries hence promoting the development of the world economies and the economies of individual countries. E- Commerce is also very effective at reducing the costs of attracting new customers to the market through advertisements since online marketing has reduced the cost because it is cheap(Berque, Prey, Reed & WIPTE, 2006). According to the research, the respondents seem not to be satisfied entirely with technological effect on the market structure and e-commerce because they require trust on the adverts that are being used online. Thus, they lay their preference on the printed adverts or the business circulars that are being distributed. This is because they have detailed information about it. In addition, high rate of cyber crime has led many individuals to lack trust with online transactions especially with strangers (Berque, Prey, Reed & WIPTE, 2006). Technology in Workplace and Labor Market Research studies shows that communication technologies and computers have enabled people to communicate with one another in ways complementary to the old traditional one on one communication and the advancement in technology has enhanced a 24-hour economic development in different countries since people can make business communication and even purchase products online. This survey realized that 40% of the business transactions being done online are between people from different countries. This means that global trade has grown immensely and social interactions between superiors and subordinates has become more intense because of the social
  • 5. control issues raise by the use of computerized monitoring systems but the use of e-mails have lowered the barriers to communications across different status levels (Berque, Prey, Reed & WIPTE, 2006). Many industries are affected by electronic commerce. The distribution sector is directly affected as e-commerce is a method of supplying and making delivery of goods and services and enlarging the market will have a positive impact on jobs opportunities because people will have an opportunity to work online and generate income through the internet and technology can also destroy the creation of jobs and this process underlie the changes in skill composition of employment. Education and Technology The study shows that the advancement in technology has affected the art of teaching by complementing the construction traditional classroom rather than eliminating the concept and despite the existence of the distance learning across the globe, the internet has made it possible for the better delivery and coverage of the instructional education. Educational technology has also advanced considerably, and the use of computers has laid a positive impact on active learning where the disadvantaged and the disabled are able to access educational, facilities online hence expanding their knowledge. It is through e-learning and the distant learning that these disadvantaged students are to learn(Berque, Prey, Reed & WIPTE, 2006). Technological impact on the personal life and society The research explored the effects of technology on the private lives and the society. The introduction of then digital forms has resulted in easier and cheaper production and dissemination of information and a vast increase in computing, and communications power has raised concerns on privacy in both public and private sector. Human tend to apply technological know-how than the natural knowledge when it comes to learning. This can be witnessed in the higher learning
  • 6. institutions where there is an exercise of the e-learning that enable students to learn through internet. Through this, people from different parts of the world have been able to communicate and share which in turn makes it easy for them to acquire knowledge(Johnston & Barker, 2002). Conclusion It has, therefore, been established that, the ongoing changes and advancements in the technological sector have numerous economic and social impacts. Some of which are significant and others are impact negatively on the society and therefore the issue on technology requires a serious concern and should be investigated in an attempt to manage its dangerous and consequences and rational decisions have to be made. WRTG 101S Writing Assignment #3: Research-Supported Essay Writing Assignment #3 will be a research-supported essay. Courses that fulfill the General Education Requirements (GERs) at UMUC all have a common theme—technological transformations. In following this theme throughout this semester in WRTG 101, we have read the analyses of various authors on innovations and technological transformations in
  • 8. education and in other fields. In this essay, you will continue this theme of technological transformations. You have two choices for your essay topic. Please choose one of the two choices. Please note that both choices are identical to the choices you had for writing assignment #2, the cause- effect essay. You may write on the same topic that you wrote on for writing assignment #2; however, you may be asked to adjust the topic in some direction in order to write a more successful research paper. In addition, of course, you will expand on the number of sources you use to defend your argument. 1. Technology and Education Analyze the impact of a particular trend in technology on education. Our discussions in the class up to this point might be helpful for you as you consider ideas for this topic. You might analyze any one of the following. These are just examples. Many approaches are possible for this topic. a. The potential effects of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in higher education. You might focus on a particular field of study for this choice. b. The effects of online courses on education. You might focus on a particular field of study for this choice. c. The effects of using digital media in online courses d. The effects of computer use in writing courses or courses in other disciplines e. The effects of certain forms of technology on reading skills or reading habits f. The potential effects of video games being introduced into schools and used to help educate students
  • 9. 2. Technology and Your Field of Study Analyze the impact of technology on a field of study of your choice. This option represents a more general approach to the essay. Some examples might be the following. These are just examples. Many approaches are possible for this topic. a. The effects of mobile devices on cybersecurity b. The effects of the Internet on the field of advertising c. The effects of cloud computing on a particular business field d. The effects of the Internet in an area of communication studies e. The effects of the Internet on global marketing strategies f. The effects of a particular type of technology on health care Outline for the essay The essay should have the following elements: · an engaging introductory paragraph. You might even want to cite sources in the opening paragraph to make your opening engaging to the reader. · an effective and clear thesis statement · a statement of definitions and background on the topic on which you are writing.
  • 10. · You will want to define any terms necessary for the reader. · You may want to provide a historical background on your topic. · unified, supported, and coherent body paragraphs that defend the thesis · sources cited throughout the body paragraphs that support the arguments in the paper · an effective conclusion · a “references” page that lists the sources cited. The references should be listed in APA format. The sources and citation format for this essay You are required to use at least six sources for this essay. At least four sources must be acquired through the databases subscribed to by UMUC’s Information and Library Services. In addition, at least three sources are to come from scholarly journals. Keep in mind that if the sources are scholarly, the argument you make in the paper will be more persuasive. For this reason, feel free to use all scholarly sources if you can. In addition, please feel free to cite more than six sources. You may find that seven or eight sources (or more) are necessary to establish your argument and defend your thesis. Please do not feel limited to using only six sources. Use more if you would like to or need to. Please cite your sources and list them at the end of your paper using APA format. Length: 1300-1500 words
  • 11. The strategy for this essay: This essay can be a persuasive essay, in which you try to persuade the reader of a particular position. Or it can be an expository essay that synthesizes material, an essay in which you give information to the reader and synthesize the different viewpoints on an issue. The following examples help illustrate these two approaches. For a persuasive essay, you could take the position that video games should be integrated into school science curricula to teach middle school students. You would cite articles that demonstrate research studies and other pieces of evidence to support the claim that video games can enhance instruction in science classes and will help middle school students learn science more effectively. If you write a persuasive essay, please follow one of the following three options for organization: · Classical (deductive) approach · Inductive approach · Refutation approach More information on these three styles is given in the following video tutorial: http://info.umuc.edu/academicwrtg/WRTG101_101S/wa3_lectur e_f.html For an expository essay, you could synthesize information on this topic, one that summarizes and analyzes the evidence for and against using video games in school curricula. Format · Double space.
  • 12. · Include a title page with the paper’s title, your name, the date, and “WRTG 101S.” · Cite sources using APA format · Submit your paper as an attachment What to submit: Proposal/Prewriting – By the end of Week 4, submit as an attachment to the assignment folder for Writing Assignment #3.
