8. Who does it:-
• If the dispensing machine is fitted with
this chip, a customer will get only 940-
970 ml petrol for the price of one liter.
• Assume 10k Liters of delivery per day
Total theft in a day:- 300Litres
Amount of fuel theft in a day-Rs 30000
• Hence, service technicians of fuel
dispenser manufacturers are paid heft
amounts by petrol pump owners to
tamper the pumps
How is tampering done:-
• Any electronics component of dispenser
can be tampered.
• In most cases, the keypad and display is
tampered together so that wrong amount
is shown on display.
• Use of external chips in pulser is also a
common practice. The software is
hacked and replaced so that the person
who tampers it get complete control of
the dispenser
Who is responsible:-
• A common person will always blame
the petrol pump’s OMC and the
immediate case is made on the
company.
• However, OMC passes the case on
fuel dispenser manufacturer.
• Requirement from dispenser
manufacturing company is providing
a secure, tamper proof electronics in
the dispenser unit.
