2. Introduction
• During Ramadan, a month of fasting observed
by Muslims around the world, the Bayat
Foundation has traditionally organized a food
drive for Afghans in need. The donations are put
into food packages, which are delivered all over
the country. Each package typically contains salt,
sugar, tea, a gallon of oil, and a bag each of flour
and rice. The Bayat Foundation has worked with
donors to provide such packages to thousands of
Afghan families over the years.
3. Hunger during Ramadan
• Ehsan Bayat, the founder of the Bayat Foundation,
has said that while he is thankful for the opportunity
to help families, the challenge of alleviating hunger
extends beyond Ramadan.
According to the United Nations, millions of
Afghans live in extreme poverty and face food
shortages. Moreover, one-third of the country’s
population does not have access to enough
nutritious food to live healthy lifestyles. A recent UN
report estimated that more than 500,000 Afghan
children younger than 6 are malnourished.
