Cinematography involves camera techniques like shot distance, movement, angle, composition, and depth of field. These techniques are used stylistically in films and can help indicate the genre. For example, the thriller film Nightwatch uses extreme close-ups to create a sense of mystery. The document then analyzes several shots from Nightwatch to demonstrate different cinematography techniques like close-ups, medium shots, rule of thirds composition, long shots, over-the-shoulder shots, and shallow focus. It concludes that cinematography is important for creating mystery in the opening of a thriller by using various shots.
2. Cinematography Overview
Cinematography involves the
use of the camera. It focuses on
the following:
• Distance
• Movement
• Angle
• Shot Composition (framing)
• Depth of Field
The cinematography used in a film to add to its style
and can help confirm the genre of the film. For
example the film Nightwatch which is a thriller uses
shots like the one to the left which is an extreme close
up to create a sense of enigma and make the film
appear mysterious.
3. Nightwatch (1997)
This is an example of a close
up shot, it shows very little
detail and is mysterious
which already hints at the
genre of the film.
This is a medium shot, it
shows mainly the top half of
a person and is generally
used to see what a characters
body language is, for
example in the shot on the
left they are watching TV,
and from their body
language they appear
relaxed.
4. Nightwatch (1997)
This is an example of rule of
thirds and two shot. The shot
has two people in it and they
are split down the Centre, we
look left to right so we take
more notice of the first
character as he is the more
important character in this
shot.
In this shot you can see a long
shot, this shows off a particular
setting in relation to a character
usually, however in this shot there
isn't so we presume its to show off
setting.
5. Nightwatch (1997)
This is an example of an over the
shoulder shot, this is a shot used
to give a conversation between
two people meaning, to show
that one character is talking to
another. It shows the
conversation from the other
persons perspective.
This is an example of focus. The
focus is shallow, it focuses on the
character in the foreground. This
gives him meaning and makes
him seem more important that
the character out of focus.
6. Reflection
Having done research on Cinematography I can see that it is very
important in the opening title of a thriller film. It creates a sense of
enigma and build mystery which is key to a thriller opening. I will
need to use a variety of shots to ensure that what I create is successful
and sticks with the basic following of all thriller openings. Using
cinematography I will be able to create the sense of mystery I am
hoping for by using the wide range of camera shots available.
