3. I looked at what
other areas
have done to
decreased
ocean
pollution.
4. Boyan Slat,
a 17 year old boy,
working on a high
school project in
2012.
At age 18, he
founded
“The Ocean
Cleanup”.
5. WHAT:
Their goal is to clean
50% of the great
pacific garbage
patch in
5 years.
6. WHY:
The great pacific garbage
patch is the largest in the
world. Currently, 90% of
the garbage is made of
larger pieces.
However, as those break
down and become bite
sized, they will become
more and more
dangerous to ocean life.
7. WHEN:
2014 - present has
included many feasibility
studies, scale model
tests, and prototypes.
8. Late 2017 will begin the Pacific
Cleanup Trials with 2018 marking
the true beginning of the
Great Pacific Garbage Patch Cleanup,
and a global effort planned by 2020.
10. HOW:
“To catch the
plastic, act like
the plastic."
A long, U shaped
screen is placed in the
oceans natural current
path.

SHIP
11. Then, anchors slow the
system down so that the
plastic on the surface
moves faster than the
cleanup system.
This causes the plastics
to accumulate against
the cleanup system and
crews can take plastic
hauls back to land as
needed.

12. Though computer
models show the
system being very
effective, we don't
know how it will
work on a larger
scale.
13. SOLUTION FOR HAWAII
On a smaller scale, ocean currents direct
garbage to certain shores more than others.
By deploying a similar system of screens off our
coasts in the path of local currents we could
reduce ocean and coastal pollution before it
ever reaches our shores.
