Economical Sustainability
As per the various research done on livestock poultry farming, it is very clear that there is
certainly growing demand of chicken meat over the past decades and it has an immense
business potential. As per the survey report of Animal husbandry department of Jharkhand
government, the daily demand for chicken meat in Ranchi itself is 20 tons/day and we are only
able to produce about 5 tons, rest is procured from neighboring states especially West Bengal.
The market is very much unorganized, therefore economic sustainability comes into question.
Within a business context, economic sustainability involves, using of the assorted assets of
the company efficiently to allow it to continue functioning profitability over time.
Now, as per above discussion my plan is to tap this unorganized market by setting up a Poultry
Estate which will not only cater the demand hygienically but also technologically and socially by
setting up a poultry redressing and waste rendering plant along with poultry farming. Apart
from above manufacturing process percentage of farming will be done by including the
marginalized section of society by making Self Help Groups (SHG) which will increase
employment rate in the society. The production in Jharkhand is 441.67 lakh kgs and demand is
around 657 lakh kgs, there is a deficit of around 215.33 lakh kgs of chicken meat which is
around 32% of the market share (Data Source-Jharkhand Animal Husbandry Department).
Therefore, economic feasibility and sustainability is of no question because if I open a new door
of market with totally different experience for consumers by providing them with frozen and
hygienically superior items, I will be able to cater ample amount of consumers. Even if I do not
charge any premium for that, the company can reach its breakeven point at an early stage as
compared to other businesses which I could have been pursued.
ABSTRACT
SUSTAINABILITY:
Sustainable development means a development which includes the “needs of the
present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs”. In any discussion of sustainability, it is most important to clarify what is
being sustained, forhow long, for whose benefit and at what cost, over what area
and measured by what criteria. Further, as situations, conditions and knowledge of
the people changes continuously, the definitions of sustainability are time-specific
and also place specific.
Social Sustainability
As I have justified above about the economic sustenance of my business, I would like to keep
my points with certain logics and citations to justify its social sustainability.
Apart from setting up technologically high standard farming unit (i.e. layer farming of chickens,
automatic redressing and waste rendering plant) I have mentioned earlier of setting up of self-
help groups which will be catering my procurement of total production. This type of contract
farming in livestock is also promoted by government through various schemes which will help
me further in the implementation. This is how it works: A contract farming arrangement
involves a wage contract between an integrator who supplies the intermediate inputs and
procures the output (as per pre decided terms) and a poultry farmer who provides inputs such
as administration, rearing and care taking. Then the chickens are in return purchased by the
contractor on a pre-defined rate which reduces loss for the farmers. A same type of model has
been implemented in Lohardaga district of Jharkhand with the help of setting up of co-
operatives. This kind of model is socially sustainable also, and will act for the economic
upliftment of the socially weak society. Therefore, from socio-economic point of view RPF
(Rural Poultry Farming) will be sustainable because chickens provide products and
supplementary income for rural farmers and continuous availability of necessary inputs on long
term basis.
Environmental Sustainability
As mentioned above that I will also be setting up of waste rendering plant, which will minimize
the waste generated from redressing of the chickens and it will further help in manufacturing a
by-product from waste which is further used in making various other cooking items.
Recently, the FAO expert consultation on strategies for sustainable animal agriculture in
developing countries has laid emphasis on sustainability and conservation of natural resources
and environment while formulating and planning rural project. On that guideline, the study
shows that improved indigenous birds are sustainable from both biological and socio-economic
point of view. There is no doubt that this type of production is sustainable from biological
perspective as all the inputs stem from renewable resources. Recently, health concern
consumers as environmental and animal-welfare issues have created a strong demand for
alternative poultry products raised in a "natural" way, without routine medication such as
antibiotics, hormones etc.
Summary
Various studies also reveal that, these improved indigenous birds satisfy the other dimensions
of sustainability like technical appropriability, economic viability, environmental soundness,
social acceptability, cultural desirability, renewability, equity and productivity.
