Science, Technology & Innovation for Sustainable food Production
Expo & Summit
17-18 September 2015
PHD House New Delhi
Executive Report
PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry New Delhi
Executive Summary
In the past years the expectation from the food industry has dramatically changed, today’s
consumer have different taste different lifestyles and different demand for food. The major
focus has shifted to readymade or ready to cook food from the conventional time taking
method and that too without any compromise on the nutritive value and the taste of the
food material. The biggest challenge that food industry is facing is ensuring the quality
standards of the readymade food. Many innovations have happened in the food production
industry. More research and development is required for unleashing the potential of the
burgeoning food industry. In past 50 years some major innovations happened in food
packaging:
 Aseptic processing & packaging
 Minimum safe canning process for vegetables
 The microwave oven
 Frozen concentrated citrus juice
 CAP for fruits & vegetables
 Freeze drying
 Frozen meals
 Concept of water activity
 Food fortification
 UHTP of milk and other products
These technologies have not only increased food production, processing, and preservation
but also have made tremendous improvement in terms of food safety, food quality and
nutritional adequacy. The major challenges of the coming future will be demographic
change, consumer demands, advancement in technologies and global competitive
pressures.
The main objective of the International Food Innovation 2015 was to discuss and display
national and international food innovations for providing healthier processed food choices
to consumers. The summit provided a platform for deliberating on case studies on
disruptive innovations of start-up food companies with focus on role of R&D, innovation and
technology for global outreach in the food processing sector with special reference to
MSME sector.
Exhibition
Nine exhibitors exhibited the latest innovation in food and agriculture industry. The expo
was having the participation from industry, government, educational institutes, start-ups
and individual innovators.
Participants:
 Energy Research Application
 Vizortex R&D Pvt. Ltd
 M/s. IMMORTALS
 Bihar Government
 Accuster Technologies Pvt. Ltd
 National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship & Management.
 Rural Agri Ventures
 Busy women
RECOMMENDATIONS
Following recommendations are derived from deliberations of eminent speakers and
interaction with the delegates in the two-day Food Innovation Summit.
 Food and agriculture is at the heart of our civilizations. Many religions and cultures
celebrate various aspects of food and agriculture due to the importance in our
continuity. The global food crisis that has made headlines in past some years has
been simmering for a while. The rise in food prices, adulteration in food items,
depletion of food standards and food quality so on and so forth are the major
challenges that is affecting the generation, has a variety of causes, mostly man-
made.
 Create awareness and organized capacity building programmes about the recent
innovations among the MSMEs in food sector.
 Make available the information about the innovations in food industry in a dedicated
portal so that everyone gets first hand information on the recent development in
this sector and there is no re-inventing of the wheel.
 Encourage Entrepreneurs in the form of Scheme or subsidy for
establishing/procuring some of innovative products.
 Provide a dynamic business environment for enhanced expansion of food sector,
massive awareness building is an utmost requirement for growth in business.
 The practice of harnessing and promoting entrepreneurial management in food
industry should permeate at all levels and not confined to top levels and Research &
Development (R&D) institutions only.
 Have a comprehensive framework including cluster development, technology
development and single window clearance for starting new business venture in food
processing sector.
 Launch a dedicated TV channel for food sector which should telecast latest
developments, winning examples, professional help and advice from the experts on
regular basis.
 Tax structures should be relaxed for start-ups to raise low and medium term loans.
 Need to have a Central repository for all the information related to Schemes, Loans,
Investors, etc. in the food sector
 Focus should be on holistic innovations. Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Food
Processing Industries may include introduction of different category of awards for
encouragement (state wise, product/service wise, and demography wise). These
awards should highlight the element of innovations involved in formulation of
product/service. Micro innovations are equally important.
 MSME sector should have access to Research Centers, CSIR labs and R&D labs at a
nominal cost or fee.
 Ideas can be converted to reality through engineering kitchens. Promote linkages
between Industry and Academia for the same.
 Launch Goods and Services tax (GST) regime. Ensure that all the existing tax benefits
are adequately subsumed in the GST regime. Mandi taxes and other related taxes
should be reviewed.
 Food Companies should get themselves listed on the MSME platform to get the
attention from the Banks, Financers and Investors.
 Give the status of Hi-Tech industry to the Food processing industry
 Establish Model Agro-Processing Centers- these centers should demonstrate latest
equipments and techniques
 Emphasis should be given on developing indigenous regionally differentiated
products and technologies
 Review the Market Regulatory Framework to establish new market for facilitating
the entry of start-ups

INDIA SHOULD EVOLVE EFFECTIVE FOOD REGULATIONS: PHD CHAMBER
The two-days International Food Innovation 2015 Expo & Summit under aegis of
PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry which began here today emphasized that
India should evolve effective regulations relating to its food safety and accelerate its
research and developmental expenditure to enable it further deepen and widen its
agri produce and thus increase its share in global food trade.
Efforts should also be made by the authorities and concerned stakeholders in the
agriculture sector so that India can deepen and broad base its partnership with
economic of scales to facilitate transfer of advance technologies to the farmers of
the land so that the agri production and India’s engagements with its foreign
counterparts increase for agri exports.
The Summit which was inaugurated by Minister of Food & Supply, Government of
NCT of Delhi Mr. Asim Ahmed Khan in which diplomats from USA and Chile and host
of other countries were present under the presidency of the Chamber’s President Mr.
Alok B. Shriram observed that the larger R&D expenditure of India in its agriculture
is critically important to augment its domestic produce as well exports.
The food safety regulations of India need to become more effective to ensure that
the food safety of agriculture products increase on par with standards that prevail in
economies of scale as the effective regulations are necessary to enable India
produce quality crops and increase its export engagements with global economies to
integrate the country with them in an effective manner.
Scientist ‘G’, DSIR, Ministry of Science & Technology Mr. Ashwani Gupta in his
observations felt that the government of the day has begun intensive work to
accelerate its agricultural production with quality grains by setting up 42 mega food
parks. Other similar steps are also been initiated to augment and increase the
productivity in India’s agri products, he added.
Among others who participated in the Summit and expressed similar sentiments
comprised Counselor for Agricultural Affairs, Foreign Agricultural Services, Embassy
of USA Mr. Scott S Sindler; Trade Commissioner, Embassy of Chile Ms. Carolina
Vasquez; Associate Director, SPA Capital Advisors Ltd. Project Management Agency
of Government of Bihar Mr. Sanjay Gupta; President PHD Chamber Mr. Alok B.
Shriram along with its Chairman of Innovation Committee Mr. S K Sarkar and
