1. CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Introduction
Online is a Web-based application that allows individuals to conveniently and
securely access the web as online through any Web-connected device, such as a computer,
laptop, Smartphone or tablet (McGrath, 2007). Shopping is interaction between the customer
and shopkeeper dealing with buying, selling of products. Moreover, shopping management
system is an application that allows companies to control, manage, the process of buying, and
selling of the products direct through internet, (Professor s. sudarshan, 2000). Online
shopping is the electronic sales where by consumers directly communicate from a seller to
buy goods/product or services not by person to person but over the Internet, (Chike Chiejina,
2014).
This unit we will cover the discussion of background of the online shopping
management system, problem statement of this study, purpose of this study, objectives of this
project, scope of the project and the benefits of the study for this project and how it is
organized its contents.
1.2 Background of study
In 1990 Tim Berners lee created the first world wide web server and browser that
opened new way of shopping in1994 when Pizza Hut started an online order service on their
website in USA (Jing Liu,2013). Another primary actor was Amazon, which started selling
real product through their websites in 1995(Zuroni Md, Jusoh Goh Hai Ling 2012).In 1998
china, was realized the first online shopping (China online shopping research report,
iResearch, 2006).
2. Although many countries in Africa are still use traditional ways of shopping but some
countries realized the important role of open-air market in their business .South Africa, is one
of leading open-air market in Africa and recognized started of online orders by 2000 Ames,
(2001). The number of participating ecommerce in Nigeria increased to over 35 as at July
2002 Lawal (2012). In 2003, Ghana began online shopping system by high level of
satisfaction, selections, pricing and huge amount of information throughout the world
Cisneros, T, (2010).
A digitalized system solves daily problems of the business, improves companies’
business performance, and helps them to growth their business efficiency, Haseeb Zulfiqar
(2011). Online shopping become the business famous around the world that helps companies
to attract more customers by improving operational excellences, Shahid Iqbal
Tarar(2010).Online sales system increases customer’s satisfaction and helps to make easily
shopping without travelling at their houses only they need to make one click according to
Swapna Kodali (2007).
Fortex AB system is a web-based application, whose purpose is to provide services and
purchase of goods as online and all the information is being stored in database, and retrieved
when needed, Haseeb Zulfiqar (2011). NEWEGG the purpose of this system is to provide
services and products as online (SHIBIN CHITTIL, 2014).Flipkart is an online shopping firm
created in 2007, in India the main aim of this system is to sale electronic equipment as online
(DR. PRITI NIGAM (2015).
.
Star Computer Company is one of the companies works in Somalia especially
capital Mogadishu Somalia with initial sales & marketing within East African countries of
various ranges of computers and accessories. Moreover, it founded in 201 and it located at
Bakara Market. They use file processing system. This caused difficulties when the manager
kept track previous data and it takes long time to search the history of the sales information to
take appropriate decision. Moreover, Star computers do not have any opportunities to
advertise their products to the community and all the products ordering are being done
manually, whereas customers have to call or walk in to the computer house and buy the
3. product they need. This waste the customer's time therefore, the exist system cannot help to
the customer's side but also to the company itself.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Generally, all information regarding to the sales and customers of the Star computers are
done manually. It is becoming a challenge for Star computers to manage that data in an
effective way and it is very difficult for Star computers to manage orders in effective and
efficient manner. Moreover, Star computers do not have any chance to submit their products
into the community and, and all the products ordering are being done manually whereas
every customer should come or call to the company’s centre to buy what they need and that
lose customers time. However, the exist system do not helps both company and customers.
All orders are manage using different papers and all information regarding one order is stored
in different files. Currently in Star computers, the workflow followed is not very efficient due
to lack of Software and digital media usage
1.3 PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT
The general purpose of the study is to develop an online computer shopping system
that will allow customers to buy computers as online
1.4 PROJECT OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this project are:
1. To study the related work of online computer shopping and including computer, shop,
customer, JSP, HTML, JAVA, SQL and shopping management system.
2. To design online computer shopping modelling using UML including use case
diagram, activity diagram and sequence diagram
3. To develop online computer shopping using JSP as front end and SQL as back end.
1.6 THE SCOPE OF THE SYSTEM
4. Star Computers is one of the major companies currently working in southern
Somalia, it located at Mogadishu. The new system will allow administrative to enter new
products, to confirm orders from customers and modify existing products. In addition, user
gives ability of viewing product information, user can choose the products, user can search
specific products and user can make payment over the internet. The duration of this project
will be six months. We use to implement this system JSP as front end and SQL as back end.
1.7 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT s
The development of web-based system for online shopping is very vital; it provides
customers ability to buy products without geographical restrictions. It reduces the
required time of travelling processes with improving security and cost saving. Do you
know that this system caters disabled customers and adult people? Moreover, the
advanced innovation of this system allows you are easily to check prices and compare
with just a few clicks at your house. Online shopping stores are not limited to a specific
time are open round the clock of 24/7, 7 days a week and 365 days.
1.8 PROJECT ORGANIZATION
The project is organized as follows;-
Chapter 1 comprises the background of the project with the statement of the problems,
objectives of the project, scope of the project and significance of the project.
Chapter 2 reviews previous literatures on online computer shopping systems
Chapter 3: Proposes the design of the project (computer selling management system) in
details using Unified Modelling Language (UML) This chapter also covers or displays
database design, table design and form design.
Chapter 4: Describes how the data collected, analysed, how the questionnaire and the
finding of the analysed data.
Chapter 5 discusses the system implementation and testing.
Chapter 6 covers the summary and conclusion of the project.
5. Summary
Over the last few years, information and communication technology have become
vital as a platform for business and socio-economic development. Online shopping is the
process of buying goods and services from merchants who sell on the Internet. In
addition, we covered this chapter background of online shopping, problem statements,
objectives, scope of the study finally organization of chapters.
