The band Cold Liberty researched other alternative rock bands such as Foo Fighters, 30 Seconds to Mars, and Green Day to help develop their image and style. They decided on signing to Warner Bros. Records like these influential bands. For their music video, they took cues from the narrative and performance-focused videos of inspiring artists. Their video balances performance of the lead singer with a narrative of avoiding conformism, symbolized through a chase with people in masks. The digipak and poster for Cold Liberty's album conform to conventions like dark colors, inclusion of band members, and promoting the release date. The only challenges are putting the band logo inside rather than the front of the digipak and making the poster landscape.

Challenging conventions in media products
1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
By Jonathan Vander
2. Creating the identity of
the band and research
Before we (Myself, Ben, Terry and Louis) began to create all of our products we first had to
create a band and an image for the band such as their clothes as well as their ideology the
genre of music they played and also their name. We decided on the name Cold liberty as we
felt that this name suited our alternative rock band and so did the people we asked as for
choosing a style we looked at other alternative rock bands such as foo fighters, 30 seconds to
mars, The killers, Green Day, Nirvana and Fall out boy we researched into all of these and
discovered that they were all signed to big record labels such as Sony and Warner bros.
Records so we thought that our band should have just been signed to Warner bros.
3. Music Video
For our music video we decided to watch videos that artists that the artists that inspired
our band had used for their music videos and we discovered that their videos were a
mixture of narrative and performance, with the performance mainly focused on the lead
singer of the band.
We took this all into account and decided that our music video should also be an equal
mixture of performance and narrative with a large portion of the performance side
focused on the lead singer of the band singing the pretender.
For the narrative side of the video we decided that our video should be about avoiding
conformism as that is what we all thought that the song was about so we decided to
create a narrative that replicated that, we decided that the video should be a chase with
people in masks as the conformers chasing a non-conformer, we decided that in the end
of the video the non- conformer would get caught and turned into a conformer we would
symbolize the conformers with the V for vendetta masks as they all look the same
meaning that they are the same.
On the whole our music video is very confirmative to all codes and conventions of an
alternative rock band we also mostly conform to most of Goodwin’s theory apart from
the vourism as we don’t have any images of women being sexualized.
4. Digipak
With the digipak I conformed to most of the conventions of an alternative rock digipak
with dark colors and Cds. Another way in which I conformed to it is by placing the band as
the front cover which is conventional of most bands first album as it lets the audience
familiarize themselves with the members of the band. Also we included things that are
needed in a digipak such as barcodes copyright information record label and track listing as
they all need to be on the digipak the only convention that I may have gone against is
putting the bands logo on the inside cover instead f on the front with the band as I couldn’t
think of a way to incorporate both as I felt like placing both in one place would take away
from one of the images.
5. Poster
The poster follows the convention that it must link to the digipak as both the front image on the
digipak and the image on the poster are the same the poster also has the date that the album will
be released this is a vital convention of a poster as if nobody knows when the album is coming
out people won`t buy it as they will not know when it is coming out where it is coming out is
important tooo so I placed the Itunes logo I also placed social media links on it too so people
could follow the band on face book and twitter, the only way my poster challenges conventions is
by being landscape I did this as the original image was landscape and I didn’t want to make it
horizontal.
