and why some choose not to become citizens
● Data was collected from Pew hispanic centers 2012 national survey of latinos (NSL)
1. The survey was conducted from september 7 through october 4, 2012 in all 50 states
● Data for legal status on immigration the hispanic center used from the current population survey(CPS)
Growth of the hispanic electorate
● In 2008 7.4% of the voters were hispanic
● In 2012 10% of the voters were hispanic an estimated 12.5 million
● One analysis says that by 2050 the number of hispanic voters will be so large that it will permanently damage
the republican party.
3. Citizenship
Reasons for wanting to get citizenship.
● Hispanic immigrants said acquiring civil and legal rights - the right to vote- was the main reason to obtain
citizenship.
● 16%- wanted to have access to the benefits and opportunities that a U.S. citizenship gave them
● 15% - Family related reasons
● 12% - Viewed the U.S as home
● 6% - Wanted to become American
Reasons why residents haven't got their citizenship
● 45% - Personal barriers
● 26% - Lack of english
● 18% - administrative barriers such as cost of the naturalization
4. Hispanic Voting Myths
● Mitt Romney's loss focused on the poor showing of hispanics and argued that the
republican party won't do better in national elections if they don't change their stance
on immigration. This information is misleading because they ignore that hispanics
vote like everyone else, on major issues like the economy. Latinos are like every
other voter and will vote for a republican when the party has a good candidate with
broad appeal.
● Income is a far better determinant of voting patterns than race is, the obama campaign
did a good job portraying mitt romney as a wall street multimillionaire whose policies
will benefit the rich.
