Dear Judges,
This summer I worked on my senior project. My project consisted of writing a
children’s book, writing a lesson plan, and coming up with two activities. My book
was about a boy who convinces his mom to get a dog from the local animal shelter
rather than getting one from a breeder. The two activities are a matching game and
a story worksheet, where the kids would write their own alternate ending to the
story I wrote. I chose this topic because it went along with my research paper. I
absolutely love animals and the animals in animal shelters are more of a soft spot
than others. I’ve never understood why people pay thousands of dollars for pure
bred dogs rather than get one from the shelter just as good, if not better. I myself
have adopted 3 animals, and I couldn’t be any happier.
What I learned about myself during this project was mostly that I am a big
procrastinator. Just knowing that this project reflects whether or not I will fail
English 4 freaks me out, and it makes me self-conscious on how well of job I did. I
also learned that I’m more creative than I give myself credit for. I take pride in that
I came up with the children’s book and the activities to go along with them. I am
only human and knowing that scares me that maybe I made mistakes during the
project but don’t realize them.
I believe the most difficult area of this project had to be presenting. I am
terribly shy and presenting something this important was definitely beyond me. I
hate talking in front of people because I feel like I’m always going to mess up. I
think the easiest area was creating the book and activities. I think it would be fun
teaching an elementary class so creating this lesson was very fun. Also, I love being
creative and this specific project required some, thankfully.
