     Game-based/simulation design
     Design of learning environments for distance education
      students
     Cognitive processes and design

GOAL OF THIS CLASS
   This course is an applied survey of the field of
    online learning, including theory and design
    considerations. Topics will include efficacy of online
    learning, design considerations when using Web
    2.0, course management systems, and similar
    online learning technologies, research and future
    directions.
COURSE ACTIVITIES
   In this course, we will:
     Define online learning in the framework of distance
      education
     Examine some of the pedagogical theories associated
      with online learning
     Examine and critique tools that can be used to support
      online learning
     Design an online learning environment
COURSE IN BLACKBOARD
ASSIGNMENTS
 Assignment Details link on Blackboard
 Participation
     Configuration of your homepage
     Online discussion and group work participation
     Any synchronous meetings are NOT included-
      attendance is optional
   Reading Study Groups
       Groups will prepare and lead the class in an activity
        focused on supplemental readings for the week
   OL Tool Review Blog
     Open entire semester
     Required to review and report at least THREE tools
ASSIGNMENTS
   OL Issues Brief Paper
     Doctoral students will write a brief paper on any issue
      related to online learning
     Assignment sheet on Blackboard

   Group Design Activity
       Groups will create a design document for assigned
        context
           Checkpoints (5 @ 10 points each)
       Folder in Assignment Details area
SCHEDULE
   Each week
     Activity related to textbook reading
     Study group activity (except for week one)
     Design group checkpoints
     Tool reviews

   See syllabus for assignments & readings
       Bibliography of supplemental readings
           .pdfs on Blackboard (Readings link)
   Schedule is flexible and subject to change
