2. Why?
I am using Dazed Magazine
as part of my textual
analysis due to their eye-
catching aesthetics and
creativity, which has
allowed them to attract a
younger demographic. While
conducting a focus group I
found that many of them
said a 'nice front cover'
would make them want to buy
magazines, and so this is a
huge target of mine
3. location- the inside of a luxury limousine to connote Billie Eilish's
millionaire status despite being a teenager. This, combined with the one-
shot creates invokes the notion of a 'hustle and grind' culture where
Eilish became an A-list Star by herself. Although the flashing light in
the background connotes the vibrancy of celebrity life there's also a
sense of practicality- this is the flash from the camera
Textual Analysis
The photograph is a long shot of Billie, creating a disconnection between
the reader and the star. Perhaps now that her world's 'interrupted'
through her celebrity status, there's no clarity with who 'the real Billie
is'- this is further anchored through the haze effect on the photo, thus
invoking Richard Dyer's star theory
There seems to be a reflection an unknown face thus created an enigma code
(Barthes) which perhaps encourages the reader's to buy the magazine,
especially avid fans of Billie
The masthead is written in a subdued yet neon green colour- the brightness
of the font suits the 'bright lights' theme of the front cover
Billie's code of gesture- the slouch and also code of clothing connotes
masculinity which is part of her star image but it also suggests a sense
of dominance of the music industry (which is symbolised through the limo
and the bright lights)
4. In 1998 they had
an 'access-able'
edition which
celebrated people
with disabilities

6. Initially I didn't like interior photography often due to
it's formality or failure to appeal to my age group. These
photos, however have a coming-of-age, youthfulness to them.
Perhaps due to the candid nature, the models/tiktokers and
also the mise-en-scene (the first photo includes twitter
pillows and a box of cereal- there's a certain casualness
which is quite freeing- both to the reader + photographer
Dazed also looked
at the TikTok
hypehouse while
doing a photoshoot
inside, appealing
to a young
demographic who are
aware of these
celebrities. The
representation is
of young people is
very much carefree
and individual-
most of the young
people they
represent have
unique life courses
7. Mirrors have become a common prop
amongst younger photographers as they
provide a futuristic effect. By having the
stars using their phones despite being
out in nature, as if looking for WiFi-
suggesting Generation Z's attachment
to phones- intertextual reference to
many family/comedy films
The representation of
black women within the
pageant industry is
unconventional but
reflects Dazed
reputation for breaking
norms. This image
reflects an anti-racist
and anti-colourist
ideology
Dazed continue with the futuristic
appearance by providing
intertextuality references to sci-fi
films or films containing experiments
