2. Richard Dyers Star Theory is a theory in which he
believes that pop stars are ‘constructed’ for
businesses financial gain. They are made to
represent ‘real people’ experiencing emotions. They
are used to help the audience connect to the artist
and therefore squeeze as much money as possible
out of the audience. They become attached to the
artist, and then begin buying record, T-Shirts etc.
RICHARD DYER’S STAR THEORY
3. There are many different ways to become a pop star. One of
the most ‘popular’ ones is to be part of a scandal or in a news
story which depicts the artist as something bad or ‘different’.
Miley Cyrus was featured in the news often for being very
sexual in her performances and also ‘Twerking’. She also
dated Liam Hemsworth for a while before leaving him, which
became a small headline in L.A. She is also known for wearing
very provocative outfits, Including a very revealing dress to
the amFAR gala. amFAR is an AIDS research group, so the
outfit wasn’t very fitting. This could be seen as her being a
very ‘Rebellious’ star who doesn’t care, once again making
her very scandalous.
1. HOW DO YOU BECOME A POP STAR?
5. Stars are constructed, artificial images, even if they are
represented as being “real people”, experiencing real
emotions etc. Miley Cyrus began as a singer and performer on
the Disney channel. She may have changed her persona to
match the modern times, as more teens and younger girls are
now beginning to listen to Pop music and less are watching
The Disney Channel. She has also spawned the ‘Twerking
Craze’ and her outfits have also been copied/remade. This is
her USP (Unique Selling Point)
2. STARS AS CONSTATUTIONS
6. Stars are made into the industry with one purpose and one purpose only. To
make money. Since Miley spawned a new craze, T-Shirts with pictures such
as ‘#TwerkTeam’ and ‘#TwerkIt’ have skyrocketed in sales. Miley has also
sold a lot more music and has received over 2,036,539,252 views on her
YouTube channel, making even more money. Although most bands/stars
are ‘Photocopied’ these days, meaning that they are the same, Miley
comes into her own. Audiences have found similarities in Miley’s Fashion
and concerts and Lady Gaga. Some even think that Miley was inspired to do
the things she does from Gaga. As long as the audience feels as if they are
connected tot he artist, then records will still sell and record companies
will still make money.
3. INDUSTRY AND AUDIENCE
7. Miley has a certain ideology which many other pop stars do
not have. She wants to be seen as a ‘rebellious’ and
‘different’ character to other people. She frequently post
provocative pictures and other statuses to her social media on
Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Miley may not have started
a fashion craze, but some fans have copied her style,
shortening their hair and wearing red lipstick. Her social
media is particularly bad, showcasing her life outside of her
record labels grasp.
4. IDEOLOGY AND CULTURE
8. There are many different things about Miley Cyrus which make her very
different and unique. She has ‘Child Star Issues’ in which she suffers from
a variance of different issues. This could depend on her being a big hit and
not being able to handle all of the attention so she ‘broke free’ and began
doing her own thing. This could lead to her situation now. Provocative,
sexual and over the top are all what Miley has been called by the press due
to her attitude. The record labels needed to nurture and protect Miley’s
persona before she became what she is today. She went from being a cute
Disney Channel programme to being a sexual and characteristic singer who
has influenced a lot of people in (maybe) the wrong way.
5. CHARACTER AND PERSONALITY
