ou cannot manage what you cannot
measure. All readers will have come across
that aphorism and like all such observations,
at its heart is a truth which, in this case, is
critical to your business. What is fast becoming a key
performance benchmark by which good airlines and
operators are measured is how they are progressing
towards the Global ‘Net Zero by 2050’ target and a
potent weapon in that process will be the ability to
measure as many functions and aspects of your
business as possible. Whether it’s monitoring the
many fuel and emissions efficiency initiatives,
helping pilots to better understand their own
performance, ensuring optimum weight & balance,
flight and route planning or any other aspect of
efficient flying, the more measurements that are
available, the better you’ll be able to understand and
improve the process. But, there’s always a ‘but’, all of
that information and measurement is only useful if
there is also the software to use it in whatever
context is required. That is the theme of this issue.
Our case study with British Airways offers a
detailed dissection of where savings can be made with
reference to the perfect flight and, as importantly, how
those savings can be made. British Airways uses data
technology and analytics to track, execute and validate
all aspects of fuel efficiency. In a similar case study with
Norwegian, we learn how the airline manages aircraft
performance using artificial intelligence to optimize
performance monitoring of each aircraft in the fleet.
Looking at a slightly different aspect of efficiency, the
case study with SunExpress introduces how that airline
has streamlined the creation and delivery of smart
content for flight crews and cabin crews. And, in the
‘How Technology Works’ article in this issue, you’ll see
how Weight & Balance needs to be able to keep up

Swiss-AS’ eTLB brings
AMOS to the flight deck
At the end of 2020 Swiss-AS
announced, within the AMOS
customer community, the extension
of its product portfolio by launching
the development of its own eTLB
which was announced in mid-July
2022. With the Swiss-AS eTLB, tightly
integrated with AMOS, customers will
have a unique opportunity to improve
the collaboration between pilots, cabin
crew and mechanics. With the
seamless integration of the Swiss-AS
eTLB with AMOS and AMOSmobile/
EXEC, customers benefit from a
product suite that becomes the one
source of truth for cockpit, cabin and
maintenance staff. Each airline will
profit from streamlined end-to-end
processes across AMOSdesktop,
AMOSmobile and the eTLB, providing
increased data access and consistency

not able to edit any detail.
The implementation of the Swiss-AS eTLB
ultimately leads to an end-to-end process optimization
and cost reduction, since the Swiss-AS eTLB helps
with optimizing aircraft turnaround times, providing
aircraft availability status in real time, and increasing
data access and consistency for flying crew.
Simple implementation and platform
independence for additional cost
optimisation
At the early stages of its development project, Swiss-
AS decided for a Type-A EFB application running on
a portable EFB. This strategic choice simplifies the
aviation authorities’ approval process for customers,
while avoiding, once implemented, the continuous
certification process of each new release of the
application. Moreover, Swiss-AS is currently working
closely with EASA to obtain an NTO letter to even
more ease the adoption of the Swiss-AS eTLB by its
customers and their authorities.
Additionally, the Swiss-AS eTLB runs on several
operating systems to leverage already deployed
hardware in the cockpit and / or provide airlines with
the possibility to select the most cost-efficient
hardware for particular contexts.
A joint development effort including the
AMOS airline customer community
Swiss-AS collaborates closely with customers to
specify the product scope, as performed previously
for the development of various AMOS features. This
tradition is extended and even enhanced for the
Swiss-AS eTLB project, which involves requirement
gathering from cockpit crew, cabin crew and
maintenance staff.
Over the past months, Swiss-AS had the privilege
to onboard several AMOS customers to the eTLB
development partners group, such as EL AL ISRAEL
AIRLINES, Luxair and Cebu Air. Since the project
kick-off in September 2021, both Swiss-AS and
customer project team members attended numerous
workshops to define key features to be used by pilots,
cabin crew and maintenance users. We consider this
customer-centric scope definition and validation
process to be a highly constructive and successful
model to facilitate the delivery of a mature and
functionally advanced product. Thanks to this
strategic partnership with AMOS airline customers of
several types and sizes, Swiss-AS will deliver its eTLB
solution in Q4 2023.

Vistara partners with Ultramain
ELB for paperless operations;
becomes first Indian airline to
introduce e-tech logbook
In late July 2022, Vistara, India’s
finest full-service carrier, became the
first Indian airline to introduce an
e-tech logbook solution and go
paperless in its operations in
association with ULTRAMAIN ELB.
ULTRAMAIN ELB will fully replace
aircraft paper technical log, cabin log,
journey log, damage log, and fueling log
providing a validated electronic
Certificate of Release to Service (e-CRS)
on flights operated by Vistara. Currently
in the airborne proving stage, the ELB
application will be used by Flight Crew,
Cabin Crew, and Engineers on iOS
devices to provide integrated workflows
with Vistara’s maintenance and
operational systems. The airline is seeking
necessary approvals from relevant
authorities before fully integrating this
solution across its operations. Once
implemented, ULTRAMAIN ELB will
enable accurate, real-time global
operational visibility of the Vistara fleet
resulting in more efficient maintenance,
higher dispatch reliability, and increased
aircraft utilization.

TAROM Airlines Implements
Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency
to Reach Fuel and CO2 Goals
Romania’s largest airline, TAROM, is approaching its 70th year in the skies. As
the company sought to expand their flight-efficiency program to keep their
emissions goals and fuel savings on target, it was announced in late July 2022
that the airline had turned to Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency. Being the largest
airline in Romania based on international flights and destinations as well as a
consistently growing and expanding company, flight efficiency is an ongoing
challenge when working towards sustainable air travel. In addition, as a SkyTeam
alliance member, TAROM has sustainability commitments for achieving
maximum CO2 reduction.
The Romanian flag carrier owns one of the youngest fleets in Europe, but even
with relatively new aircraft, reducing fuel burn and CO2 emissions is always a
concern. The company knew there was more that they could do.
TAROM built their Fuel Efficiency Improvement initiative around the framework
proposed by IATA for a successful fuel management program. One important
feature of this model is ‘management by numbers’ using a Define-Measure-
Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) process. Their strategy was in place, but TAROM
lacked a system that could consolidate and analyze their internal data, allowing
them to make data-driven decisions about flight planning and fuel loading. The

Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency brings together flight variables into a single
platform for a comprehensive look at fleet and environmental data. The tool can be
used to discover and monitor savings opportunities by fleet, tail, airport, city pair
and more. It’s a one-stop-shop for insights and can be leveraged to rally
stakeholders company-wide and engage them in efficiency initiatives. The platform
instantly unlocks value, enabling airlines to make improvements in targeted areas.
“The scope of our fuel management initiative is beyond a plain ‘cut the costs’
operation. It is a change management endeavor focused on fleet renewal,
improving operational efficiency, promoting and using sustainable aviation fuels,
and carbon offsetting,” said Dragos Preda, Fuel Efficiency Improvement Manager at
TAROM.
“Our target is to reach, in a rather short time, about 2.5% savings compared to
our usual operations and to further reduce CO2 emissions by 50% per passenger
kilometer by 2030. This is where Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency came in,
enabling us to accurately monitor our current achievements and to identify areas
where we could act more effectively to further improve operations.”

In addition to the benefits gained through the Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency
portal, Preda commented on the value of his relationship with the product team,

management knowledge.”
Prior to implementing Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency, the airline was able to
monitor general fuel consumption figures and reveal generic trends using simple
tools. However, TAROM soon realized that mining for insights behind those generic
trends was not possible. Much of the data came from single sources, making it
unreliable and even inaccurate in some cases.
“The level of aviation fuel efficiency we need can’t be reached without a tool
specifically designed for fuel management,” Preda said. “Honeywell Forge Flight
Efficiency intakes, processes and cross-references many distinct data sources to
provide a detailed and accurate image of our fuel situation. It is one of the best
tools that explicitly targets fuel management and is reliable.”
Being one of the first Honeywell Forge deployments in Romania, TAROM is fully
confident in the solution’s capabilities. In just a few months since implementation,
Preda commented that he believed the system has the potential to increase
operational fuel savings by about 3%. Preda said, “By choosing Honeywell Forge
Flight Efficiency we have promising indications TAROM will reach an efficiency
level beyond our initial goals.”

Kuwait Airways selects Vistair to accelerate digital transformation
across Flight Operations
In early August 2022, Vistair, a leading software
and technology company that drives operational
efficiencies for aviation organizations, was pleased
to announce that Kuwait Airways Company (KAC)
has selected their DocuNet solution to accelerate
digital transformation across Flight Operations.
Kuwait Airways launched a program to focus on
maximising efficiency, and to sustain growth while

to digitally transform the editing, publishing and
distribution of manuals and forms. Leveraging a single,
enterprise-wide platform for operational content to

distribution.

Every year ahead of the monsoon in the South-South East Asia region, several
airports prepare their runways for the heavy rains they experience from June
onward. The monsoon season is a great challenge for airports especially for the
ones where domestic traffic is picking back up post Covid-19. The weather
conditions during the monsoon season can significantly affect the safety of the
operations as well as the operating costs. Characterized by frequent and
significant episodes of thunderstorms and heavy rain, the monsoon has an
impact on visibility, wind conditions and runway conditions. In case of sudden
and dense rainfall and insufficient drainage, water might accumulate and
operating areas of the airports might even be overflowing with water. This is
what was reported by the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) on Twitter in
September 2021 “due to sudden heavy rain, for a short period, there was
waterlogging at the forecourt”.
It is projected that the monsoon weather episodes will be even more challenging
in the future. The research article “Robust increase of Indian monsoon rainfall and
its variability under future warming in CMIP6 models” (Katzenberger, Schewe,
Pongratz & Levermann, 2021), highlights the following: “The projected increase in
summer monsoon rainfall in combination with the projected long-term increase in
interannual variability will be accompanied by an increased number of extremely
wet years and potentially more high-rainfall events”.

with the ICAO Global Reporting Format (GRF) which came into effect on
November 4, 2021.

In early September 2022, Global
aviation safety, quality, and risk

with German urban air mobility
(UAM) company Volocopter.

efficient flight route checker
To support dispatchers with a more efficient flight route check and adjustment
for safety operation, Weathernews developed ‘Flight Plan Editor’. With this
tool, users can simply paste their ATC flight plan into a plan editor box, after
which the solution will display the flight route. After selecting and overlaying the
desired weather layers (such as enroute turbulence), the user can parse the route
or change the altitude of their Flight Plan as necessary.
The desired high impact weather layers can be selected from the top right menu
to overlay on the map, use the slide bar to scroll to the corresponding valid time
and altitude of the contents. By zooming in to the area of concern, the new
preferred waypoint, fix and/or altitude can be inputted with a drag-and-drop
functionality, so dispatchers can plan a more safe and efficient flight.
Once the flight parsing is completed, the user can copy the ATC flight plan in
text format and share with necessary members or to the users’ flight planning
system as needed.
Flight Plan Editor contains Weathernews’ proprietary forecast products such as
en-route weather forecast ‘Turbulence/Convection/Icing’ and volcanic ash forecasts
as well as different public weather information. ARINC424 aeronautical navigation
database is used to support the route parser function. With the Flight Plan editor,
users improved their daily operation productivity by more than 5%.

At the start of September 2022: Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB), the Philippines’

ARMS® Flight Planning goes live at Jambojet
The ARMS® Flight Planning System went live at
Kenya’s Jambojet on 20 Sep 2022, just as was
planned. Newsworthy is the fact that the entire
implementation was conducted remotely by project
teams distributed over 10 Laminaar headcounts and
an equal number at Jambojet. None having to move
from their respective home stations, literally and
figuratively.
This is not a first for team Laminaar pulling off a
100% remote implementation. The first time one was
in 2020 during the peak of the Covid pandemic, when
ARMS® was remotely implemented at Korea’s JinAir.
A typical implementation is a complex sequence of
detailed activities, starting with network and
infrastructure set-up including hardware and software
installations, application load testing, user training and
certifications, and the final acceptance test, which,
among meeting other rigorous criteria has to also
perform successfully in a live or production
environment. All of this was conducted with clockwork
precision by a project team leader in Singapore and
teams distributed across Bangalore, Mumbai and the
client team members in Nairobi.
The result at Jambojet was visible in the smiles of
satisfaction when the first flight using the ARMS®
Flight Planning application took off and landed
successfully on the 20 Sep 2022.
Jambojet decided on ARMS® in April 2022 to fully
automate their flight planning capabilities and bring in
productivity savings by helping unify flight ops and
fuel policies across its operations. The ARMS® Flight
Planning system brings together real-time information
on a number of key variables — including weather, air
space restrictions, aircraft performance and schedule

It was announce in mid-October 2022 that SITA OptiClimb®, a digital inflight
prescriptive analytics tool for fuel optimization, has been selected by Singapore
Airlines to support the carrier’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by
2050. By deploying SITA OptiClimb®, the airline is able to optimize fuel utilization
during the aircraft’s climb-out phase. The unique solution combines aircraft
tail-specific machine-learning models with 4D weather forecasts to recommend
customized climb speeds at different altitudes. It leverages historical flight data
to predict fuel burn in different flight scenarios and recommends optimized
climb profiles on a user-friendly interface for pilots. It is estimated that airlines
can derive fuel savings of up to 5% during climb-out on each flight, with around
5.6 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions avoided annually if every airline
worldwide uses SITA OptiClimb®.
Following a successful test period and validation of SITA OptiClimb® outcomes,
the tool has been used on Singapore Airlines’ Airbus A350 fleet since August 2022.
SITA has calculated that the solution will help the carrier cut aircraft carbon
emissions by up to 15,000 tons annually.

goals, including the latest technologies to optimize fuel efficiency in a bid to reduce

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects the cumulative

As the severity, intensity and
frequency of climate disasters
increase, preparation is becoming
more crucial than ever to protect lives,
as well as infrastructure, businesses
and local economies. One high-tech
forecasting company is now stepping
up, offering hyper-detailed weather
prediction and pre-storm strategy
plans, right down to a city block.
Boston-based Tomorrow.io already
boasts clients like Delta, Ford, JetBlue,
Meta, Raytheon, Uber, United Airlines,
and the U.S. Air Force. Rainfall,
snowfall, fire danger and air quality
prediction are all part of the firm’s
capabilities.
When the remnants of hurricane Ida
blew into New Jersey almost a year
ago, the state was woefully unprepared.
It wasn’t a hurricane anymore, so the
preparation was minimal, but the
deluge was incredible. “It rained four
inches in one hour during Ida, and we
had a total of six and a half inches of
rain, in one storm event, which is really
unprecedented,” said Caleb Stratton,
chief resilience officer for the city of
Hoboken, New Jersey.
Hoboken, just across the Hudson
River from Manhattan, is only two
square miles but home to more than
62,000 people. It is increasingly prone
to flooding, so the city had been
building protection in the form of parks
that act as massive drains. One of the
parks sits atop a massive cistern that
can hold 200,000 gallons of water and
is managed remotely, so water can be
held or released when necessary. But
to optimize the system, city officials
need to know what’s coming. So just
after Ida, they began working with
Tomorrow.io.
“They are able to provide insights on
when a storm event’s going to occur
— at what intensity, for how long — and
they can do really block by block
forecasts,” said Stratton. The firm works
with its clients well before they start
forecasting to show them specifically
how future weather will affect
everything from operations to supply
chains to staffing.
“We will take an airline’s operating
protocol, specifically upload it into our
system, and then we have our own
proprietary insights dashboard that tells
them exactly when it’s going to
happen,” said chief marketing officer
Dan Slagen. “So, we’ll tell an airline over
the course of the week, these flights are
going to be at risk of weather, and if
you need to de-ice your planes, this is
the time to do it, to avoid delays or any
safety impacts.”
Next up, the firm is sending its own
satellites into space, which will send
back data far more frequently than
government weather satellites.

PLANNING FOR A NET ZERO CARBON FUTURE
IATA has put forward some strategies to become net zero by 2050 (figure 1).
How to get to NET zero

British Airways had already set this objective before IATA, and our plan to
become net zero by 2050 stands on three main pillars (figure 2).
The first pillar is through
new aircraft; low and zero
emission aircraft and flying
techniques. The second
pillar is for fifty percent of
British Airways’ fuel to be
Sustainable Aviation Fuel
(SAF) by 2050: We are also
looking at hydrogen
powered aircraft. If
governments can
underwrite the supply of
SAF then airlines can buy
more which will make it
more cost effective. The
third pillar is for carbon
reduction and removal from other sectors with some carbon offsetting.
New Aircraft
British Airways has replaced its Boeing 747s and 767s with a fleet of new aircraft
including the Airbus 350-1000, Boeing 787-8 -9 and -10 and the Airbus A320/321
neo replacing some of ceos in the fleet (figure 3).

The A350-1000, for example, is 40% more efficient than the Boeing 747 with the
same payload and passenger capacity. We’re also looking at and investing in
hydrogen propulsion systems, so IAG, British Airways’ parent company, through
the Hangar 51 program, has invested in ZEROAVIA which is looking at hydrogen
propulsion systems on new aircraft. We’re also looking carefully at Airbus and
how they’re progressing with the Airbus ZEROe concept which they believe can
be in production by 2034 — an ambitious target.
Flying techniques
If we look at flying techniques, our concept is quite simple: We need to plan as
efficiently as possible; we need to fly as efficiently as possible and, most
important of all, we need to review effectively (figure 4).

What you can see in figure 4 is a feedback loop going all the way through the
system and constantly looking at how we can best optimize our planning and
flying techniques while constantly reviewing them.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Looking at Sustainable Aviation Fuel, British Airways has committed to at least
ten percent SAF by 2030 and we’d hope to get beyond that. The first batch of
SAF came from Phillips 66 Ltd.; we’ve also invested in LanzaTech in the US and
Velocys in Humberside in the UK. As already mentioned, the final target is to use
50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel by 2050. There isn’t a lot available at the moment
which is why that target seem quite far off but, hopefully, it will be possible to
bring it forward.
Offsetting and Carbon capture
At British Airways, we’re looking at robust carbon reductions and removals in
other sectors of the industry; offsetting all CO2 emissions on all BA flights within
the UK; and getting credible opportunities for customers to offset their
emissions through varied carbon reduction projects. Plus, again through the IAG
Hangar 51 program, looking into breakthrough carbon capture technology.
THE PERFECT FLIGHT
In September 2021, I operated something called the Perfect Flight, the first BA
Commercial flight to operate using SAF. We looked at a suite of fuel efficiency
initiatives and, crucially, we also looked at airspace modernization. A similar
perfect flight was carried out in 2010 and most of the efficiency initiatives that
we looked at for that flight, became standard operating procedures for British
Airways from then on. Here is a short video about the Perfect Flight.
The question is, how do we calculate some of the savings that you saw in that

video. We use the Honeywell Forge tool to help us do so. Here are some of those
savings in greater detail and step by step.
ON THE GROUND
As the video explained, the aircraft for the Perfect Flight was connected to fixed
electrical ground power and pre-conditioned air; the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit)
was switched off five minutes before the standard time of departure which all
saved about 30kgs of fuel compared to what we do on a normal standard flight.
The pushback was done by an electric Mototok tug, and it was all done with
100% renewable energy (figure 5.1).

Engine start was delayed and, of course, only one engine was started, but the
delay saved about another 10kgs of fuel: also, for this exercise, we used the most
fuel-efficient flap 1+F rather than flap 3 and that saves about 24kgs of fuel on an
Airbus 320neo (figure 5.2).

If you look at our routing out to the runway, Heathrow were on Easterlies that
day and you can see the green line on figure 5.3 to get us on to 09R to depart;
we did an intersection departure, got a target take-off time (TTOT) via Air Traffic
Control and the red marking that you can see on the chart is the area where we
did reduced engine taxi.

70kgs might seem like a lot but that saving was only for the Reduced Engine Taxi
Out (RETO). We did have a problem with the tug on the day and, if we’d had
both engines running, it would have been double that number so that 70kgs is
embedded into the savings we had there with the issue that we had with the tug
on the push-back. You can see where we did the reduced engine taxi and then
when we started the other engine to line-up on to the runway ready for take-off.
If we look at the Honeywell Forge tool (figure 5.4) to see that data, then you can
see where we started the first engine and then where we started the second engine
as well, and that emulates what you saw in the diagram previously.

There’s a three-minute warm-up time required for the Leap engines on the NEO.
We completed a Packs off take-off (figure 5.5) which generated a further 6kgs
saving; plus we did a Reduced Acceleration Altitude and NADP2 noise reduction
procedure at a thousand feet: about 10kgs of fuel was saved by using those
procedures.

You can see that there was a Thunderstorm in the bottom right-hand corner and
so Air traffic Control gave us an early left turn which did save some fuel with
continuous climb. As was explained in the video, we flew some optimized climb
speeds which saved around 7kgs of fuel in the climb phase.
Looking at the profile again using the Honeywell Forge Fuel Efficiency Tool
(figure 6.2), the blue line was our actual climb profile, the grey line was our planned
climb profile and you can see that we got to top of climb a lot earlier than we had
planned on the flight plan.

If we look at the lateral routing for the flight (figure 6.3), this is very much like
Free Route Airspace (FRA); you can see a much more direct line than what we
had planned in the flight planning system to get us up to Glasgow.

There were some large fuel benefits resulting from the lateral routing.
I spent a lot of time in the simulator doing research on the arrival into Glasgow,
trying to make it as optimal as possible. We didn’t know what runway would be in
use on the day, so had to consider both an arrival on runway 05 and runway 23
(figure 6.4).

In constructing my own efficient routing, we consulted with Air Traffic Control
(NATs) and so they knew where I wanted to go. The green line is the routing that
was actually flown which broke away from the actual STAR approach and then
made a direct routing onto the Easterly approach into Glasgow and, with a
continuous descent, that saved around 137kgs of fuel. We had our optimized
winds given to us on the descent as well with about 5kgs of fuel saved for the
wind updates there. (Our wind updates were using the NAVLINK product from
NAV Flight Services)
The routing that I created in the simulator is in figure 6.5 and you can see two
waypoints; PINE5 and PINE0: These don’t normally exist on a routing into Glasgow
but by constructing these and by putting a speed reduction in, I was able to fly the
descent fully ‘Managed’ coupled with a continuous descent around the corner onto
the ILS of runway 05

If we look at it in the Honeywell tool (figure 6.6), it can be seen that there was a
slight levelling off near the bottom of the descent where we had to reduce vertical
speed on occasions when Glasgow Air Traffic Control had a couple of traffic
conflicts that were going to go beneath us, so to ensure that we didn’t do any
level-offs, we had to reduce the rate of descent to ensure a CDO into Glasgow.

BACK TO THE GROUND
Looking at our landing (figures 7.1 and 7.2) we landed on runway 05 all the way
to A1. We did a low power, low drag approach; delayed lowering the landing gear
until as late as possible whilst ensuring the stable approach criteria at 1,000 ft
was met, a Flap3 landing, reduced engine taxi-in and then single engine taxi
without APU (SETWA), so we didn’t start the APU at all on arrival.

The Leap engine requires three minutes to cool down before shutdown and,
again, in the Honeywell tool (figure 7.2) you can see where we shutdown that
engine and then had final engine shutdown. The fixed electrical ground power
(FEGP) was connected to the aircraft without any APU starting at all.
THE RESULTS AND USING
THE NEW FUEL EFFICIENCY
TOOL
Most important of all, we saved 371kgs
of fuel on the Perfect Flight and that
resulted in just under 1200kgs of CO2
saved. If we look at this in a benefits
context, we achieved 16% more
efficiency than a normal A320neo
doing that flight or compared with a
A320ceo, that was a 35% efficiency
benefit.
I wanted to put it into context what a
tonne of CO2 looks like so the
photograph is a picture of what a tonne
of CO2 actually looks like in terms of
volume.
Finally, I just want to explain how we communicate some of these things and the
feedback with our pilots. Figure 8.1 shows the new pilot dashboard showing the
Discretionary Fuel statistics on the A320 fleet.

The grey graph at top left shows all the Captains on the A320 fleet anonymized.
The ‘Me’ represents where the individual whose dashboard this is sits in terms of
how often they carry Discretionary Fuel as a percentage. It shows where they
are vis-à-vis their peers on the fleet. The right side of the graph shows the fleet
statistics, the Discretionary Fuel requested by the fleet and the discretionary
fuel that was actually required: there’s always quite a big difference there and it
usually shows that only 5% of flights require some Discretionary Fuel. This
makes sense, as we use the 95th percentile in our Statistical Contingency Fuel
on most of our flights.
The chart underneath shows the individual what Discretionary Fuel they
loaded and what Discretionary Fuel they actually required. And then, to the right of
that, the CO2 impact of what they did. Every Captain gets this report sent to them
every quarter.
We do the same thing with Reduced Engine Taxi Out (RETO) as in figure 8.2
showing the same information with how often the Captain in question does RETO.

All readers will have come across that aphorism and like all such observations, at its heart is a truth which, in this case, is critical to your business. What is fast becoming a key performance benchmark by which good airlines and operators are measured is how they are progressing towards the Global ‘Net Zero by 2050’ target and a potent weapon in that process will be the ability to measure as many functions and aspects of your business as possible. Whether it’s monitoring the many fuel and emissions efficiency initiatives, helping pilots to better understand their own performance, ensuring optimum weight & balance, flight and route planning or any other aspect of efficient flying, the more measurements that are available, the better you’ll be able to understand and improve the process. But, there’s always a ‘but’, all of that information and measurement is only useful if there is also the software to use it in whatever context is required. That is the theme of this issue. Our case study with British Airways offers a detailed dissection of where savings can be made with reference to the perfect flight and, as importantly, how those savings can be made. British Airways uses data technology and analytics to track, execute and validate all aspects of fuel efficiency. In a similar case study with Norwegian, we learn how the airline manages aircraft performance using artificial intelligence to optimize performance monitoring of each aircraft in the fleet. Looking at a slightly different aspect of efficiency, the case study with SunExpress introduces how that airline has streamlined the creation and delivery of smart content for flight crews and cabin crews. They can consult every page but are not able to edit any detail. The implementation of the Swiss-AS eTLB ultimately leads to an end-to-end process optimization and cost reduction, since the Swiss-AS eTLB helps with optimizing aircraft turnaround times, providing aircraft availability status in real time, and increasing data access and consistency for flying crew. Simple implementation and platform independence for additional cost optimisation At the early stages of its development project, Swiss- AS decided for a Type-A EFB application running on a portable EFB. This strategic choice simplifies the aviation authorities’ approval process for customers, while avoiding, once implemented, the continuous certification process of each new release of the application. Moreover, Swiss-AS is currently working closely with EASA to obtain an NTO letter to even more ease the adoption of the Swiss-AS eTLB by its customers and their authorities. Additionally, the Swiss-AS eTLB runs on several operating systems to leverage already deployed hardware in the cockpit and / or provide airlines with the possibility to select the most cost-efficient hardware for particular contexts. A joint development effort including the AMOS airline customer community Swiss-AS collaborates closely with customers to specify the product scope, as performed previously for the development of various AMOS features. This tradition is extended and even enhanced for the Swiss-AS eTLB project, which involves requirement gathering from cockpit crew, cabin crew and maintenance staff. Over the past months, Swiss-AS had the privilege to onboard several AMOS customers to the eTLB development partners group, such as EL AL ISRAEL AIRLINES, Luxair and Cebu Air. Since the project kick-off in September 2021, both Swiss-AS and customer project team members attended numerous workshops to define key features to be used by pilots, cabin crew and maintenance users. We consider this customer-centric scope definition and validation process to be a highly constructive and successful model to facilitate the delivery of a mature and functionally advanced product. Thanks to this strategic partnership with AMOS airline customers of several types and sizes, Swiss-AS will deliver its eTLB solution in Q4 2023. “EL AL considers the eTLB as an integral part, along with AMOSmobile/EXEC, to enable paperless throughout our maintenance. Having it as part of AMOS is a huge advantage with hope for a smooth integration. TAROM Airlines Implements Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency to Reach Fuel and CO2 Goals Romania’s largest airline, TAROM, is approaching its 70th year in the skies. As the company sought to expand their flight-efficiency program to keep their emissions goals and fuel savings on target, it was announced in late July 2022 that the airline had turned to Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency. Being the largest airline in Romania based on international flights and destinations as well as a consistently growing and expanding company, flight efficiency is an ongoing challenge when working towards sustainable air travel. In addition, as a SkyTeam alliance member, TAROM has sustainability commitments for achieving maximum CO2 reduction. The Romanian flag carrier owns one of the youngest fleets in Europe, but even with relatively new aircraft, reducing fuel burn and CO2 emissions is always a concern. The company knew there was more that they could do. TAROM built their Fuel Efficiency Improvement initiative around the framework proposed by IATA for a successful fuel management program. One important feature of this model is ‘management by numbers’ using a Define-Measure- Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) process. Their strategy was in place, but TAROM lacked a system that could consolidate and analyze their internal data, allowing them to make data-driven decisions about flight planning and fuel loading. The

The monsoon season is a great challenge for airports especially for the ones where domestic traffic is picking back up post Covid-19. With this tool, users can simply paste their ATC flight plan into a plan editor box, after which the solution will display the flight route. After selecting and overlaying the desired weather layers (such as enroute turbulence), the user can parse the route or change the altitude of their Flight Plan as necessary. The desired high impact weather layers can be selected from the top right menu to overlay on the map, use the slide bar to scroll to the corresponding valid time and altitude of the contents. By zooming in to the area of concern, the new preferred waypoint, fix and/or altitude can be inputted with a drag-and-drop functionality, so dispatchers can plan a more safe and efficient flight. Once the flight parsing is completed, the user can copy the ATC flight plan in text format and share with necessary members or to the users’ flight planning system as needed. Flight Plan Editor contains Weathernews’ proprietary forecast products such as en-route weather forecast ‘Turbulence/Convection/Icing’ and volcanic ash forecasts as well as different public weather information. At the end of September 2022, Bytron Aviation Systems set out some of the reasons for using their skybook solution. And that doesn’t include the thousands of hours saved in time efficiencies. As the severity, intensity and frequency of climate disasters increase, preparation is becoming more crucial than ever to protect lives, as well as infrastructure, businesses and local economies. One high-tech forecasting company is now stepping up, offering hyper-detailed weather prediction and pre-storm strategy plans, right down to a city block. Boston-based Tomorrow.io already boasts clients like Delta, Ford, JetBlue, Meta, Raytheon, Uber, United Airlines, and the U.S. Air Force. Rainfall, snowfall, fire danger and air quality prediction are all part of the firm’s capabilities. When the remnants of hurricane Ida blew into New Jersey almost a year ago, the state was woefully unprepared. It wasn’t a hurricane anymore, so the preparation was minimal, but the deluge was incredible. “It rained four inches in one hour during Ida, and we had a total of six and a half inches of rain, in one storm event, which is really unprecedented,” said Caleb Stratton, chief resilience officer for the city of Hoboken, New Jersey. Hoboken, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, is only two square miles but home to more than 62,000 people. It is increasingly prone to flooding, so the city had been building protection in the form of parks that act as massive drains. One of the parks sits atop a massive cistern that can hold 200,000 gallons of water and is managed remotely, so water can be held or released when necessary. But to optimize the system, city officials need to know what’s coming. So just after Ida, they began working with Tomorrow.io. “They are able to provide insights on when a storm event’s going to occur — at what intensity, for how long — and they can do really block by block forecasts,” said Stratton. The firm works with its clients well before they start forecasting to show them specifically how future weather will affect everything from operations to supply chains to staffing. “We will take an airline’s operating protocol, specifically upload it into our system, and then we have our own proprietary insights dashboard that tells them exactly when it’s going to happen,” said chief marketing officer Dan Slagen. “So, we’ll tell an airline over the course of the week, these flights are going to be at risk of weather, and if you need to de-ice your planes, this is the time to do it, to avoid delays or any safety impacts.” Next up, the firm is sending its own satellites into space, which will send back data far more frequently than government weather satellites.

We’re at a crossroads and the decisions we make today could lead to a brighter future for our planet. Flying is freedom: it connects us with places and people, it makes the world a smaller place but this can come at a cost to the environment. That’s why, at British Airways, we’ve embarked on a flight path to net zero. Our customers and shareholders demand that we become more sustainable. However, most importantly is the aviation industry; every reader will be linked to the industry and we all have to do something to improve sustainability, if we want air travel to survive and grow. PLANNING FOR A NET ZERO CARBON FUTURE IATA has put forward some strategies to become net zero by 2050 (figure 1). How to get to NET zero Figure 1 British Airways had already set this objective before IATA, and our plan to become net zero by 2050 stands on three main pillars (figure 2). The first pillar is through new aircraft; low and zero emission aircraft and flying techniques. The second pillar is for fifty percent of British Airways’ fuel to be Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by 2050: We are also looking at hydrogen powered aircraft. If governments can underwrite the supply of SAF then airlines can buy more which will make it more cost effective. The third pillar is for carbon reduction and removal from other sectors with some carbon offsetting. New Aircraft British Airways has replaced its Boeing 747s and 767s with a fleet of new aircraft including the Airbus 350-1000, Boeing 787-8 -9 and -10 and the Airbus A320/321 neo replacing some of ceos in the fleet (figure 3). “We need to plan as efficiently as possible; we need to fly as efficiently as possible and, most important of all, we need to review effectively…” How to get to NET zero The British Airways’ plan is to achieve this in three main ways: New aircraft Low & zero emission aircraft Flying Techniques SAF 50% of our fuel to be SAF by 2050 Carbon reduction & removals in other sectors ‘Carbon Offsetting’ Figure 2

We’re also looking at and investing in hydrogen propulsion systems, so IAG, British Airways’ parent company, through the Hangar 51 program, has invested in ZEROAVIA which is looking at hydrogen propulsion systems on new aircraft. We’re also looking carefully at Airbus and how they’re progressing with the Airbus ZEROe concept which they believe can be in production by 2034 — an ambitious target. Flying techniques If we look at flying techniques, our concept is quite simple: We need to plan as efficiently as possible; we need to fly as efficiently as possible and, most important of all, we need to review effectively (figure 4). PLAN EFFICIENTLY FLY EFFICIENTLY REVIEW EFFECTIVELY Flight efficiency Flying Techniques Figure 4 What you can see in figure 4 is a feedback loop going all the way through the system and constantly looking at how we can best optimize our planning and flying techniques while constantly reviewing them. Sustainable Aviation Fuel Looking at Sustainable Aviation Fuel, British Airways has committed to at least ten percent SAF by 2030 and we’d hope to get beyond that. The first batch of SAF came from Phillips 66 Ltd.; we’ve also invested in LanzaTech in the US and Velocys in Humberside in the UK. As already mentioned, the final target is to use 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel by 2050. There isn’t a lot available at the moment which is why that target seem quite far off but, hopefully, it will be possible to bring it forward. Offsetting and Carbon capture At British Airways, we’re looking at robust carbon reductions and removals in other sectors of the industry; offsetting all CO2 emissions on all BA flights within the UK; and getting credible opportunities for customers to offset their emissions through varied carbon reduction projects. Plus, again through the IAG Hangar 51 program, looking into breakthrough carbon capture technology. THE PERFECT FLIGHT In September 2021, I operated something called the Perfect Flight, the first BA Commercial flight to operate using SAF. We looked at a suite of fuel efficiency initiatives and, crucially, we also looked at airspace modernization. A similar perfect flight was carried out in 2010 and most of the efficiency initiatives that we looked at for that flight, became standard operating procedures for British Airways from then on. Here is a short video about the Perfect Flight. The question is, how do we calculate some of the savings that you saw in that

Here are some of those savings in greater detail and step by step. ON THE GROUND As the video explained, the aircraft for the Perfect Flight was connected to fixed electrical ground power and pre-conditioned air; the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) was switched off five minutes before the standard time of departure which all saved about 30kgs of fuel compared to what we do on a normal standard flight. CASE STUDY: BRITISH AIRWAYS AIRCRAFT IT Operations • AUTUMN 2022 • 38 Engine start was delayed and, of course, only one engine was started, but the delay saved about another 10kgs of fuel: also, for this exercise, we used the most fuel-efficient flap 1+F rather than flap 3 and that saves about 24kgs of fuel on an Airbus 320neo (figure 5.2). • Delayed engine start - 10kgs saved • Minimum fuel flap for take-off - 24kgs saved Figure 5.2 If you look at our routing out to the runway, Heathrow were on Easterlies that day and you can see the green line on figure 5.3 to get us on to 09R to depart; we did an intersection departure, got a target take-off time (TTOT) via Air Traffic Control and the red marking that you can see on the chart is the area where we did reduced engine taxi. • Reduced Engine Taxi Out (RETO) • 70kgs saved Figure 5.3 70kgs might seem like a lot but that saving was only for the Reduced Engine Taxi Out (RETO). We did have a problem with the tug on the day and, if we’d had both engines running, it would have been double that number so that 70kgs is embedded into the savings we had there with the issue that we had with the tug on the push-back. You can see where we did the reduced engine taxi and then when we started the other engine to line-up on to the runway ready for take-off. If we look at the Honeywell Forge tool (figure 5.4) to see that data, then you can see where we started the first engine and then where we started the second engine as well, and that emulates what you saw in the diagram previously. 3 minutes engine warm up required Figure 5.4 There’s a three-minute warm-up time required for the Leap engines on the NEO. We completed a Packs off take-off (figure 5.5) which generated a further 6kgs saving; plus we did a Reduced Acceleration Altitude and NADP2 noise reduction procedure at a thousand feet: about 10kgs of fuel was saved by using those procedures. “Engine start was delayed and, of course, only one engine was started, but the delay saved about another 10kgs of fuel: also, for this exercise, we used the most fuel-efficient flap 1+F rather than flap 3…”

As was explained in the video, we flew some optimized climb speeds which saved around 7kgs of fuel in the climb phase. Looking at the profile again using the Honeywell Forge Fuel Efficiency Tool (figure 6.2), the blue line was our actual climb profile, the grey line was our planned climb profile and you can see that we got to top of climb a lot earlier than we had planned on the flight plan. • Changes in climb speed and CCO • ToC occurred earlier than flight plan Figure 6.2 “Air traffic Control gave us an early left turn which did save some fuel with continuous climb. CASE STUDY: BRITISH AIRWAYS AIRCRAFT IT Operations • AUTUMN 2022 • 40 If we look at the lateral routing for the flight (figure 6.3), this is very much like Free Route Airspace (FRA); you can see a much more direct line than what we had planned in the flight planning system to get us up to Glasgow. Lateral route optimisation - large fuel benefits compared to flight plan Figure 6.3 There were some large fuel benefits resulting from the lateral routing. I spent a lot of time in the simulator doing research on the arrival into Glasgow, trying to make it as optimal as possible. We didn’t know what runway would be in use on the day, so had to consider both an arrival on runway 05 and runway 23 (figure 6.4). • Continuous Descent Arrival (CDA) - 137kgs saved • Optimised descent speeds with accurate wind updates - 5kgs saved Figure 6.4
  • 41. In constructing my own efficient routing, we consulted with Air Traffic Control (NATs) and so they knew where I wanted to go. The green line is the routing that was actually flown which broke away from the actual STAR approach and then made a direct routing onto the Easterly approach into Glasgow and, with a continuous descent, that saved around 137kgs of fuel. We had our optimized winds given to us on the descent as well with about 5kgs of fuel saved for the wind updates there. (Our wind updates were using the NAVLINK product from NAV Flight Services) The routing that I created in the simulator is in figure 6.5 and you can see two waypoints; PINE5 and PINE0: These don’t normally exist on a routing into Glasgow but by constructing these and by putting a speed reduction in, I was able to fly the descent fully ‘Managed’ coupled with a continuous descent around the corner onto the ILS of runway 05 Figure 6.5 If we look at it in the Honeywell tool (figure 6.6), it can be seen that there was a slight levelling off near the bottom of the descent where we had to reduce vertical speed on occasions when Glasgow Air Traffic Control had a couple of traffic conflicts that were going to go beneath us, so to ensure that we didn’t do any level-offs, we had to reduce the rate of descent to ensure a CDO into Glasgow. Reduced rate of descent flown to prevent level-off due traffic conflicts. Figure 6.6 BACK TO THE GROUND Looking at our landing (figures 7.1 and 7.2) we landed on runway 05 all the way to A1. We did a low power, low drag approach; delayed lowering the landing gear until as late as possible whilst ensuring the stable approach criteria at 1,000 ft was met, a Flap3 landing, reduced engine taxi-in and then single engine taxi without APU (SETWA), so we didn’t start the APU at all on arrival. The fixed electrical ground power (FEGP) was connected to the aircraft without any APU starting at all. THE RESULTS AND USING THE NEW FUEL EFFICIENCY TOOL Most important of all, we saved 371kgs of fuel on the Perfect Flight and that resulted in just under 1200kgs of CO2 saved. If we look at this in a benefits context, we achieved 16% more efficiency than a normal A320neo doing that flight or compared with a A320ceo, that was a 35% efficiency benefit. I wanted to put it into context what a tonne of CO2 looks like so the photograph is a picture of what a tonne of CO2 actually looks like in terms of volume. Finally, I just want to explain how we communicate some of these things and the feedback with our pilots. The ‘Me’ represents where the individual whose dashboard this is sits in terms of how often they carry Discretionary Fuel as a percentage. It shows where they are vis-à-vis their peers on the fleet. The right side of the graph shows the fleet statistics, the Discretionary Fuel requested by the fleet and the discretionary fuel that was actually required: there’s always quite a big difference there and it usually shows that only 5% of flights require some Discretionary Fuel. This makes sense, as we use the 95th percentile in our Statistical Contingency Fuel on most of our flights. The chart underneath shows the individual what Discretionary Fuel they loaded and what Discretionary Fuel they actually required. And then, to the right of that, the CO2 impact of what they did. Every Captain gets this report sent to them every quarter. We do the same thing with Reduced Engine Taxi Out (RETO) as in figure 8.2 showing the same information with how often the Captain in question does RETO.
