Q: What is TEDx?
A: In the spirit of TED, 'ideas worth spreading', TEDx program
helps communities, organizations and individuals produce TED-
style events at the local level. TEDx events are planned and
coordinated independently under a free license from TED.
Q: How did I meet TED and TEDx?
A: TED talk videos are important sources of course content. After
class, I would watch TED to improve English and learn about cutting-
edge technology,entertainment and design. And from TEDx forum I
found a chance to translate videos for a Shanghai TEDx event as a
volunteer.

'BIT': Beijing Institute of Technology
'bit by bit':
-Our first 'bit' of TEDx event
-We spread innovative and inspirational
ideas in the community and hope to bring in
new energy and thoughts to our fellow
students

8. Online Promotion
As the manager of WeChat public account, I
translate speech information, write
promotion content and generate 2000+
views each post
Offline Promotion
We hand out flyers, put up posters in school
buildings and set up stands on campus.
Fellow students showed great interest in the
event and some even joined our team after

9. Communication with
speakers
Each speaker receives a TED Talks
book as a gift. Since TED has
regulations on speech length and style,
we would inform speakers in advance
and polish the speech together. Each
speaker is assigned a TEDx member as
a coordinator throughout the event.

13. QI MING,
owner of the first coffee school in Beijing
At TEDx BIT, he shared his start-up story and
how he switched from a professional interpreter
to a coffee entrepreneur. He said that people are
drinking coffee(mostly starbucks) every day but
not many would care about the making of a good
coffee. He gave us a lesson about the features of
coffee as well as tips on how to tell if coffee is
good or bad. Afterwards he invited organizers to
his coffee school. Now I am a coffee enthusiast
thanks to his inspiration

15. How does organizing TEDx affect my
life?
People involved in TEDx come from different backgrounds but thanks
to TEDx, we become friends and through them I gain a brand new
vision of a different area and their life.
I also grew a lot as this is my first time organizing an event
independently. From zero to hero, I took part in almost every aspect
of the organization. Tough as it was, everything was worth it when
the event finally took place.
It's like a dream come true right in front of me, bit by BIT.
What's more, it opens a door to a different world, a
bigger world.

17. Q: How did I find Leadership Summer School?
A: Recommended by a friend through TEDx, I approached LSS and
thought it could help develop my organizational skills. While
experiencing another country, I get to meet people around my age
who also share passion for inspirational events. Why not?
Q: What is Leadership Summer School?
A: Leadership Summer School (LSS) is a global, annual, intensive
training event for inspirational youth leaders. During 10 days, the
project fosters skills of motivated participants from all over Europe
and beyond, engaged in international organisations, and supports
them on their path of becoming future leaders and active citizens.

19. Inter-Cultural
Communication
In this session, we simulate the
scenario of communication with
language barrier and culture
differences.
We draw on our faces symbols
representing our own culture and
personality. We manage to come up
with ways to communicate effectively
and try to avoid conflicts.

20. Reflection group: we gather once a day and reflect on
the day passed. It can be a joyful moment or something
that worries us. The bonding makes us a family.

22. Public Speaking
Despite being an organizer of TEDx talk
events, I had very limited experience of
public speaking. We each picked card with a
speech topic. Mine was 'secret'. The first time
I was lost of words because the story was not
even complete in my mind.
My trainer Milda told me
'embrace your vulerablity, it will catch the
audience immediately'

23. The vulerable part... I decided to talk about my relationship with
mom which I had never spoken of before. This time I was not
thinking about words to use. As I approached the deepest part of
my heart, the story just poured out. Thoughts and emotions were
clearer and stronger as they turned into words. I could tell people
were enjoying the story too.
It's that moment I realize the charm of storytelling. Milda asked if
I want to tell the story again at the closing ceremony. There was
no reason to say 'NO'

24. And then it's my first public speaking experience. I was
overwhelmed by people's warm words for my speech.

26. Nizar, an engineer based in Dubai,
also plans to change sector of career
to business. We stay in touch after
LSS and support each other on
preparing GMAT and business school
application.
