color throughout his career. His
subjects were largely domestic or
figurative, and a distinct
Mediterranean verve presides in the
treatment.

cityscape paintings in which he
transforms the subject with bold
and largely unrealistic colors.

The name Les Fauves (‘the wild beasts’) was coined by the critic Louis
Vauxcelles when he saw the work of Henri Matisse and Andre Derain in an
