Nationalism in Europe

3. The first clear expression of nationalism came with the
French Revolution in 1789. France, as you would remember,
was a full-fledged territorial state in 1789 under the rule of
an absolute monarch.
The political and constitutional changes that came in the
wake of the French Revolution led to the transfer of
sovereignty from the monarchy to a body of French citizens.
The revolution proclaimed that it was the people who would
henceforth constitute the nation and shape its destiny.
4. How did nationalism develop during the French
Revolution?
Of a handful of modern ideologies, one of the most monumental
events in human history, the French Revolution, generated one:
nationalism. Nationalism is the devotion to the interest or culture
of a particular nation. Although in its extreme form it could go as
far as some radical measures such as ethnic cleansing, the patriotic
feeling that nationalism brings about has been a major momentum
that binds a nation together.
Prior the French Revolution, France was divided by various
regions and religions. The only thing that could possibly link the
nation together was the belief that everyone was supposed to serve
the king. However, by the end of the eighteenth century, there
appeared to be a sense of membership among the French people.

10. The Age of Revolution is the period from approximately 1775
to 1848 in which a number of
significant revolutionary movements occurred in many parts
of Europe and the Americas. The period is noted for the change
in government from absolutist monarchies to constitutionalist
states and republics. The Age of Revolution includes
the American Revolution, the French Revolution, the Haitian
Revolution, the Greek Revolution, the revolt of
the slaves in Latin America, and the independence movements
of nations in Latin America. The period would generally
weaken the imperialist European states, who would lose major
assets throughout the New World. For the British, the loss of
the Thirteen Colonies would bring a change in direction for
the British Empire, with Asia and the Pacific becoming new
targets for outward expansion.

12. Who unified Germany?
Whereas Camillo di Cavour directed Italian
unification, a Junker (the Prussian name for an
aristocratic landowner from old Prussia in the east)
named Otto von Bismarck pushed German
unification through "blood and iron" and skillful
understanding of realpolitik .
When did the German states unite?
The third and final act of German unification was
the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, orchestrated
by Bismarck to draw the western German states into
alliance with the North German Confederation.
With the French defeat, the German Empire was
proclaimed in January 1871 in the Palace at
Versailles, France

14. Prince Otto Edward Leopold von Bismarck was the mastermind of
German Unification and was the first chancellor of the united nation.
Bismarck caused Germany to transform from a loose net of 39 states
into the strongest industrial nation of Europe. The unification of
Germany had a tremendous impact on European balance of powers for
the rest of history. For nearly 30 years Bismarck dominated Germany
and European politics.

16. Bismarck's ultimate goal was to unite the German states
into a strong German Empire with Prussia as its core. On
September 30, 1862 Bismarck made his famous blood and
iron speech, which implied that if Germany was to unify it
would be with the use of military force. He hated
liberalism, democracy and socialism. Following his speech,
he dismissed the budget proposal and ordered the
bureaucracy to collect taxes. This money would go to
military use, and Bismarck would expand and strengthen
the Prussian armies. These armies would than be used in
three wars which Bismarck devised to unify the country.

Italy. Just because of these people, Italy unified
like Germany.
