2. ESI (Emergency Severity Index)
• ESI triage is based on the acuity of patients' health care problems and the number of resources
their care is anticipated to require.
• The concept of a "resource" in ESI means types of complex interventions or diagnostic tools,
above and beyond physical examination. Examples of resources include X-ray, blood
tests, sutures, and intravenous or intramuscular medications

3. •Level 1- Resuscitation. 0 min
•Level 2- Emergency. 10 min
•Level 3- Urgent. 30 min
•Level 4- Semi urgent minutes. 60 min
•Level 5- Non-urgent minutes. 120 min
5. Level 2 – Emergency.
• High risk of deterioration, or signs of a time-critical problem, several
pain.
• Examples:
Kidney Stone Asthma attack
6. Level 3 – Urgent.
• Before assigning a patient to ESI level 3 the nurse must consider the
patients vital signs.
• Stable, with multiple types of resources needed to investigate or treat
(such as lab tests plus X-ray imaging).
• Examples:
Fractured ankle Abdominal pain
7. Level 4 – Semi urgent.
• Stable, can safely wait hours to be seen.
• Care by mid-level providers in fast track or express care setting.
• Examples:
Sprined ankle or toe
Abscess
8. Level 5 – Non-urgent.
• Stable, with no resources anticipated except oral or topical
medications and prescriptions.
• Examples:
Rash Toothache
