4. Adaptations
● Camouflage hide. Skin is covered with bumps to look like vegetation on water.
Skin color helps to blend in with environment.
● Semi-transparent membranes which cover their eyes when submerging under
water. That feature helps them see better.
● Alligators are capable of submerging underwater for several hours. Their
heart rate will slow down and blood will be directed to critical areas of their
body.
● Webbed toes for living in the water.
● Eyes and nostrils placed on top of the head to stay almost submerged and still
be able to see and breath well.
5. More about alligator
Alligators are native only to the United States
and China.
American alligators are found in the southeast
United States: all of Florida and Louisiana, the
southern parts of Georgia, Alabama, and
Mississippi, coastal South and North Carolina,
East Texas, the southeast corner of Oklahoma,
and the southern tip of Arkansas. According to
the 2005 Scholastic Book of World Records,
Louisiana has the largest alligator population.
