2. Info-graphic Research:
An infographic is a visual representation of information or data, either as a chart or diagram. Infographics that are good are
visually engaging, which, in some cases, are able to appeal to a target audience where other ways of displaying information
wouldnโt appeal as much to your audience.
3. Info-graphic Research:
A YouTube channel named โThe
Infographics Showโ makes many videos
on all kinds of topics, and, about 90%
of the time, use infographics to get
their points across. Here are a couple
of infographics that they made on the
topic of cheating in exams.
Here are a couple more infographics
(coming from the same YouTube
channel) that they made in their video
on the topic of being kidnapped, and
on what are considered to be the
worst punishments in mankindโs
history.

5. โข My client is A.G. Barr, also known as Barr's, a soft drink manufacturer from Cumbernauld, Scotland.
โข They make the Scottish soft drink Irn-Bru (formerly known as Iron Brew), which was introduced in 1901. Irn-Bru is also
produced in Russia.
โข Barr's advertise Irn-Bru through comedic means, in order to appeal to mass audiences (who are more likely to buy
something if it makes them laugh, which makes them feel good).
โข Notable adverts that Irn-Bru have made include one in the 1970s-80s featuring a shipyard boy, which gave birth to the
classic slogan 'made from girders', and one in the 2000s that takes heavy inspiration from the 1982 animated classic
'The Snowman', and one that parodies the 2006 film 'High School Musical'.
Client research:
6. Client research II:
Barrs have gained a high amount of controversy over the years for sometimes going too far in their attempts to be
comedic in their adverts for Irn-Bru. One such advert where they received a lot of backlash was in a recent advert that
aired in February, where the attempt to quip "don't be a can't" ended up sounding like an offensive slang term that begins
with the letter 'c'. Another advert where they gained a lot of flak was where they parodied the soft drink adverts done in
the 1990s in the USA, but stating that Irn-Bru isn't made by 'those crazy Yanks'
7. Market research:
Irn-Bru is part of the soft drink market, and they compete with soft drink mega-giants such as the Coca-Cola Company
(who make the Coca-Cola drink), PepsiCo (who make the Pepsi drink) and Keurig Dr. Pepper (who make Dr. Pepper)
Irn-Bru beats out all of these drinks, (and all drinks period, with the exception of whisky, which led to it gaining the
nickname "Scotland's other national drink"), in terms of sales, in Scotland.

8. Audience research:
After some research on YouGov.co.uk, I found out that Irn-Bru is, on average, drunk by young people of both sexes (mostly
male), and, on average, the people that drink Irn-Bru are on the left side of politics.
From 1808 ratings on YouGov, about 61% of them were positive, with 556 of those ratings being very positive. This shows
that, through a sample of the people that took the time to speak about the product on YouGov, Irn-Bru is considered a
good product by the majority of the masses that drink it.

10. Idea Generation (Radio):
Ideas
Have a catchy
slogan (at end of
advert)
"Irn Bru gets you through"
"Scotland's Other
National Drink"
"Made in Scotland
from Girders"
"Don't be a can't,
be a can"
Have a rhetorical
question at the start
of the advert
"You ever thought about
being a real man?"
"Who wants to have ladies
with them everywhere?"
11. Idea Generation (Advergame):
Ideas
Have Irn-Bru feature
prominently in the
game
As something that stops your
embarrassment meter from getting too high
As something that doubles
the number that gets rolled
As a mascot for the game
12. Individual Ideas:
(Advergame): My one idea for an advergame was a Snakes and Ladders-type game where there was a potential to roll 'Irn-
Bru' instead of a six, which would give you the chance to roll again and move double the number that you rolled (like if
you rolled 1 you'd move 2 spaces, 2 would be 4, 3 would be 6 etc.). It would push the message that Irn-Bru is a good thing
and helps you win in whatever you try to do. This was before I found out that the advergame had to be an animation, and
therefore, I scrapped the idea.
(TV Advert): I didn't have a full idea for a TV advert, but due to the fact that we are
limited to the premises of York College (in terms of filming the advert itself), but when I
was informed of that fact, I immediately had the idea of taking advantage of that, and
making the advert itself take place inside a college-like environment. This, therefore,
would make the advert look more authentic and professional.
(Radio Advert): I didn't have a full idea for a radio advert, but
I had an idea for a slogan that could be said at the end of the
radio advert, that being "Nothing for you but Irn-Bru". I had
his idea for a slogan because it's a short phrase that can be
said in under two seconds, and it rhymes, which would
automatically make it catchy and rememberable, like the
already-existing slogan "Irn-Bru gets you through"
13. Group Idea (Advergame):
The advergame idea that the three of us (myself, Jack Pickford and Harry Adkins-Penningon) agreed on takes place on a
sofa with you, a mother and a girlfriend. The mother is showing the girlfriend baby pictures and you're embarrassed, so
you need to drink Irn-Bru to get you through the embarrassment without letting your embarrassment meter get too high.
If your mother notices you drinking Irn-Bru (which offends her as she's one of those people who think Irn-Bru gets you
drunk) or your embarrassment meter gets too high, the game is over. The game is timed using a digital clock on the table,
and your goal is to go as long as you can without getting noticed.
14. Planning Docs (TV Advert):
Our original idea was to film in an open field and have someone attempting (and failing) to shoot cans, but after drinking
some Irn-Bru, they were able to shoot all the cans easily.
However, due to time constraints and permissions, we were unable to do that.
Now, our TV advert will involve an exam (filmed in college) where someone was unable to get a good grade. The person
would be barged past by someone (presumably a bully, or just someone the person with a bad grade doesnโt get along
with) who got a good grade, and then they (the person who got a bad grade) would take a sip of Irn-Bru and go back to
the person who barged them. The advert would then end with the slogan โIrn-Bru gets you throughโ.
We decided on this idea for an advert because it is a plausible idea that our group can pull off easily enough with the
restrictions that we have (weโre only allowed to film on college premises and we only have a week to do the full project of
this advert)
What happens in the advert:
The advert opens with a scene of an average looking student getting their exam results (which are poor), with him
looking simultaneously tired and disappointed in himself from the bad results. He leaves the classroom and gets
barged by someone who got a better result than him (said person receives some sort of congratulations from the
teacher). The person takes a can of Irn-Bru out of his bag and takes a sip, before confidently walking away, not at
all worried about his poor exam result anymore. The slogan then pops up on screen "Nothing for you but Irn-Bru"
15. Planning Docs (Advergame):
Use the Irn Bru Project UAL 2017 presentation to see the planning requirements. Include all the required planning.
You may need to copy this slide several times, so you can fit all the work on here.
